Out of curiosity, are all of his roles for One Piece just for the 4Kids dub? Or did he ever get to show up in the Funimation dub?

@Soul-dragon Most of them were from the 4Kids dub
He did mostly additional voices in the FUNimation dub. The only FUNi dub One Piece material he has appeared in was One Piece: Strong World.

Happy Birthday Sean Schemmel!

My top 10 favourite roles of his are:

1.) Son Goku (Dragon Ball Z)
2.) Lucario (Pokemon)
3.) Gaston (Berserk)
4.) Katoran (A Time of Eve)
5.) Nobody (TMNT)
6.) Ancient One (TMNT)
7.) Nail (Dragon Ball Z)
8.) Roto (Yu Yu Hakusho)
9.) Shigeru Murota (Yu Yu Hakusho)
10.) Conrad (Berserk)

I'm glad to start seeing the work from Sean Schemmel now that he's working in LA, seeing him do some western animation and games is pretty refreshing to see. I'm glad he's becoming a favourite of Wes Gleason's to work with and hopefully we continue to see him in more DC projects.

His performance as Goku in Dragon Ball Super continues to still be on point as usual. Even if I've grown to really love Masako Nozawa's rendition, Sean will still always be the definitive english voice for him.

I'm also glad I got to meet him at the Canada Fan Expo back in August, really cool to meet him, along with Chris Sabat and numerous other VA's. Considering how Dragon Ball Z was my childhood and I really got back into it in my teenhood and still a huge fan currently in my adulthood. It was really satisfying, even if I only got into the Funimation dubs in my teenhood, I'm a Canadian kid here....after all.

I look forward to his upcoming performane as Goku Black, to see how they refine it after the initial game performances.

Happy birthday Sean Schemmel.

Always awesome job as Goku and great job on the Goku vs Hit Fight a few weeks back.

Other than that its nice to see Sean voice act in more action prelay. It was cool that he got to be in Dishonored D.O.T.O as one of the voices for the overseers. the cast had some great underrated vas. I never thought I would see Sean in the same project as Rosario Dawson but it happened.

It was also cool that he made a guest appearance in the new Spider-man cartoon as Peter`s high school teacher Mr. Salerno before Max Modell hopefully he gets to voice a villain down the line or the character makes more guest appearances but the fact he got to work with KZS was awesome.

Happy birthday Sean

ALLY TO GOOD, NIGHTMARE TO YOU. Happy Birthday, Sean Schemmel! Really, what can I say about his rendition of Son Goku/Kakarot that hasn't been said before? Put simply, he *is* the definitive English voice for the Saiyan raised on Earth. Goku aside, Schemmel is a very underutilized and overlooked VA, and possesses quite a range. My other favorite Schemmel roles consist of Gonard, Onsokumaru, Lucario, Archie, Juan, Jimmy, Nail, Roto, Black Doom, Helmeppo, Dr. Indigo, Amidamaru, Rio, Vellian Crowler, Ojama Yellow, and Greiger.

Something that's probably worth noting. I've noticed that aside from the few anime movies & Dragonball related material, Schemmel hasn't appeared in much anime either. Most of the anime work he did was when he was living in New York. And that's mostly for long running series like Pokemon & YuGiYoh.

I wonder, Is Schemmel going the way of former actors that were prevalent in Funimation dubs(Baker, Willingham & Bailey) where he's doing pre-lay & video games instead? It does kinda look that way.

@Shaun Ince I may have mentioned this on Twitter, but I think Shaun was never really a consistent anime dubber the way that Laura, Troy, Travis, Yuri, Liam, JB Blanc, & a few others were.

He in fact moved to NY to do prelay stuff (less competition than LA) right after DB finished, IIRC, & only moved back for Goku for the sake of the show. 4Kids paid around $75/episode for dubs too, whereas FUNi did $50. Not much better tho, & Sean was only in the dubs to stay on the good side of the prelay directors.

As NCZ said, anime dubs notoriously pay almost nothing, so it's understandable that most VA's (including Sean!) don't really involve themselves with it, & a lot of people *leave* after many years of it.

From what I've heard from some actors on Reddit, there's a bit of distrust of dubbing companies due to them not paying well. & Sean has openly spoken about his beef with FUNimation for not paying better. To a lesser extent Chris Sabat as well (it's part of why he founded his own studio Okratron 5000, according to Derek Padula).
Shaun Ince
said at 8:37 PM on Mon Nov 14 2016
@huzaifa_ahmed That would explain why he mainly sticks to Goku(because he's established himself as the character) and mainly prelay work instead. Cuz of how low anime dub pay is, of course it's going to turn some people off. Unless you're doing a ton of it, it isn't sustainable when other types of voice acting work pays much better.
said at 6:29 PM on Tue Nov 15 2016
@Shaun Ince "Cuz of how low anime dub pay is, of course it's going to turn some people off"

*most people.

You have to keep in mind there are several thousands of voice actors in LA, yet maybe 50-80 (if we're lucky) for anime dubs. Even 1-2000 actors for dubs would be *fine*, but the fact that you can basically count all of them between Naruto & Bleach's a testament to that it really turns off a *massive* majority of basically everybody. It just isnt a seriously competitive or attractive industry, & I really sigh at the fact that that's the case, & it's never really shown any signs of change - only for the negative.

Schemmel is so underused in other anime. Sure, he's always down for voicing Goku for Funimation but I feel he needs to appear in more Funimation dubs. Schemmel has quite the range when it comes to voices & it's a shame that the voice directors don't use it to the full extent. Would have been a different story if he was local to Texas before he moved to LA rather than living in New York & appearing in practically every NYAV & 4Kids dub & then moving to LA.

Happy Birthday Sean Schemmel!

Not only is he extremely underrated and underused but he's also the voice of one of my childhood heroes Son Goku! He is without a doubt the perfect English voice of Goku. Ok I didn't grow up with him exactly since I live in Canada and thus had the Ocean dub, I never saw the FUNimation dub till I was in my teens and once I did, I realized that childhood nostalgia be damned, I thought Sean was better than all of the Ocean voices "Kakarot" had over the years...sorry Kirby, Ian and Peter you guys were good but Sean's been the most consistent, having continued to voice him since he first landed the role. I mean Sean wasn't perfect at all first...I mean he really wasn't that great it also didn't help that Goku in the dub was change from a a grown man-child who loved a good fight to a wannabe Superman knockoff. However thanks to him and everybody else at FUNimation wanting to learn how to improve as VA's and the more and more they kept doing DBZ Sean eventually found his groove and since Dragonball Kai and on (which was around the time I discovered the FUNi dub), he has been absolutely perfect giving a perfectly youthful yet tough badass voice that I felt Goku's always needed. I think the best quality that Sean brings to Goku is the intensity of the screams he can pull off, especially in Battle of Gods. I think that has been the best outing thus far Sean's done as Goku. I remember getting chills when I heard the Battle of Gods dub trailer and even just thinking about it still does that to me and that's awesome.

With that said his King Kai is a mixed bag, you can really tell it's still an impression of Don Brown's version and it gets annoying real fast, however with that said Sean was awesome as Nail too.

I also loved his performance as Lucario, Katoran, Gaston, Conrad, Shigeru Murota, Roto, Mr. Akashi, Nobody and his numerous other roles on Gundam Unicorn and Pokemon, I did especially enjoy his Colress, Cyrus, Archie and even Hugh. He also does one hell of a spot on Christian Bale impression when he did Batman for The Dark Knight Rises IOS game.

It's pretty sweet he's now voicing in LA, he's gotten a few cool gigs doing some western cartoons and games but I've been wondering when is he going to voice in an anime dub recorded in LA? It surprises me that he hasn't already? I know he's not getting out of dubbing since he knows and we know he is Goku, then again in LA he doesn't really needed too....still it's awesome he's now working there and I await to see what future roles he can get.
said at 1:03 PM on Mon Nov 21 2016
It's great to hear that Funimation FINALLY announced they're dubbing Dragon Ball Super earlier this month, it's been a long wait but this will no doubt be worth it, to hear Sean Schemmel, Christopher Sabat and the rest of the gang reprise their iconic roles once more, and considering how damn great the current DBZ cast is right now in their respective roles, they will no doubt be even better here and Sean is no exception.

I am looking forward and interested to see how he pulls off Goku Black, while I think his voice for the character in Xenoverse 2 is just alright right now, I think he can still put a lot of fine tuning to the voice to make it one hell of a voice and performance. Though I'm sure the end result will be amazing.

As for his career in LA, I still expected a lot more opportunities from him but considering how big and how long Dragon Ball Super will be, I can see it being put on hold for a bit longer but eh who knows what the future will bring. Still so many franchises Sean has yet to be a part of, that I hope he gets to be involved with someday, like Transformers, Marvel and much more.

As a voice actor, we can't JUST do anime… We audition for many shows and take what we can get. And we can't just be open to cartoons and video games. We're actors and we have to be open to many different forms of acting. Such as stage acting and on camera acting. And there are many different types of voice acting as well. Not just character work. There's Audio books, commercials, narration, industrial work, radio, documentaries, etc… So I'm not surprised that Sean is doing voice over work for Disney.

"We're actors and we have to be open to many different forms of acting. Such as stage acting and on camera acting. And there are many different types of voice acting as well. Not just character work."

These are pretty valuable things to keep in mind. The point about being an actor first, and voice actor second is especially critical. It's something that should be emphasized a lot toward anyone looking to get their foot in the door.

Though this site mainly focuses on the animation type stuff (for now), there's a lot more to the business than that. The books I've read tell me that things like narration, promos, and the like are pretty lucrative and open plenty of opportunities, so it's important to be well-rounded, equipped and glad to work for any kind of job, even if animation is the most "glamourous" or easily-visible for fans.
Shaun Ince
said at 3:01 PM on Sat Sep 5 2015
@TheMorganBerry I kinda knew that stuff already, but thanks for reminding me & expanding on it a bit further. Not only that, but in this business, you need to have pretty thick skin, cuz you lose more roles than you get. An actor will audition for something, then they won't get it. Then they move on to the next one. You're absolutely correct. Voice actors or just actors in general have to be open to various forms of acting.

I must be the only die hard DBZ weaboo that has any respect for Sean. Seriously. -_-
Even though I really don't like his Son Goku, I overlook that and see that all his other roles are absolutely outstanding. In my opinion, he was one of the better voices for the 4kids dub of One Piece and I LOVED that he returned for Funimation's dub of Strong World.
As for his Goku, what bothered me wasn't really as much as his voice as it was the fact that the original dub was horribly rewritten, and made Goku VERY out of character. Wasn't his fault in the slightest.
Once the dub for Dragon Ball Kai came around (which stuck to the original dialogue), I warmed up to it a lot more and noticed that it actually is a LOT better than what it was when he first started. :)

If he voices a character of the One Piece Funimation Dub he should voice Jabra using his Archie and Cyrus voice from Pokemon. But unfortunately he not in more Funimation dubs.

@Andy15Tran Sean lives all the way up north in NY; it'd be difficult for him to commute between there and Dallas.

He's also the Goku from my childhood, same with the other two.

 2 Shout Outs!
Some great performances in other anime but he'll always be the voice of Goku (blessing and a curse). :P

Kind of cool how he's worked on both the 4Kids One Piece dub and the Funimation One Piece dub; the latter only being additional voices though.

Hopefully he actually gets to voice a character with an actual name in the future and then it'll be official!

I hope NYAV Post also gets dub the Berserk movies that VIZ Media unfortunately picked up... (would've preferred Sentai Filmworks or Funimation since they've outsourced dubs before)

VIZ usually keeps it local (L.A.) and only occasionally outsources to Vancouver.

Anyways although it wasn't the largest role I liked Schemmel's work as Gaston.

The interaction between Guts (Marc Diraison) and him felt very natural even though they record separately (like all dubs).

They really seemed like they were comrades with a great relationship.

I was really pissed when Gaston died. For a moment it seemed like he would survive but no!!!!

Why did Kentaro Miura have to kill a good character. :)
