People seriously need to stop hating on this talented woman, fanboying over their precious Veronica Taylor, and remove their nostalgia goggles. Gimme a break guys she’s WAY better than Kayzie Rogers when she voiced Ash, HER voice as Ash literally made my ears BLEED! I don’t see how Sarah’s Ash Voice could do the same. Truthfully I don’t care what ANYBODY says or what Ash’s JP VA think. Sarah sounds FAR more like Rice Matsumoto nowadays than Veronica Taylor would ever and tbh Veronica sounded absolutely nothing like Rica, and just cause Rica said that before, doesn’t mean she was right. That was honestly just her opinion.

@TGBBOD To Quote Autovolt : "It's true she does sound more like Rica Matsumoto than Taylor did but sometimes it's better to go down a route where you're not doing an impression but make the character's voice your own. "

Sarah Natochenny is a fine Voice Actress Stuck in a Part doesn't suit her and wastes her talents.

Part of the reason that Veronica Taylor being replaced as Ash is so controversial is because the Recasts were forced by TPCi's underhanded practices.

I doubt TPCi hired Sarah Natochenny because of her sounding 'FAR more like Rica Matsumoto'. They hired her to Impersonate Veronica Taylor....

@EPA Deane
Oh yeah, I know what Autovolt said, thanks. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike Veronica Taylor. I grew up with both her and Sarah Natochenny. I like both of Ash’s voice actors equally. I understand they hired Sarah to impersonate Veronica Taylor cause in BF and DP she tried too hard to sound like Veronica Taylor. But I honestly think she gave up on that at the start of BW and now she’s only trying to sound more like Rica Matsumoto now, which she kinda is, and the reason I said that is because I saw Autovolt’s comment and I agree with him. I liked Veronica Taylor’s voice as Ash and all but it’s literally been almost 13 years since TPCI/DuArt took over and the fact that there are still people complaining about Ash’s current VA makes me believe they have no life. They seriously should move on. In my opinion, the voice acting has always been in the same quality since 4Kids was dubbing the anime, and it still is the same quality today the way I see it. And Veronica and Sarah both do good voicing Ash tbh.

@TGBBOD I've never really been a massive Fan of Rica Matsumoto's take on Ash/Satoshi if I'm going to be honest. I respect her for sticking with the role but she's always sounded slightly too rough and Grating on my ears. If Sarah Natochenny is emulating Matsumoto's take... then her Ash still doesn't really work for me....

I do want to hear more voice work from Sarah Natochenny.... in a role that doesn't waste her potential IMO.

@EPA Deane
Really? You actually had something to criticize Rica Matsumoto about? Wow... I’m actually surprised. You’re honestly the first person I’ve seen criticize Rica’s take on Ash. There are like a massively amount of people out there who dislike Sarah’s take and love Rica’s take. To me, Rica’s voice as Ash doesn’t really sound bad or grating imo. She puts tons of emotion into voicing Ash. Tbh, I think Meowth’s Japanese voice sounded worse. I can say the same for Goku’s Japanese Voice in DBZ, but I’ve personally found Rica’s Ash voic pretty cool, although I usually always prefer English VA’s over Japanese ones just cause it’s in my own language.

I would so love to see her do more outside of Pokemon. Considering she's done voices for the Local Population in GTA V, was Alicia in Bullet Witch around the time after she got cast as Ash and was in Sheep & Wolves and the Thor: Dark World IOS game she definitely has some talent in her.
said at 9:19 AM on Fri Mar 16 2018
@RetroPokeFan She definitely does. This proves that much.
I also looked up some of the other work the Pokemon VAs I disliked and they were all pretty good as well. So who knows what it is.
said at 9:21 AM on Fri Mar 16 2018
@RetroPokeFan I rather enjoyed her work as Aura in "Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V" to be honest. Hopefully she gets a role in VRains as well.

Yeah...I'll be honest here not the biggest fan of her Ash. However I managed to check out some of her other work and to my surprise she was actually pretty good. I just hope she gets a gig outside of Pokemon because she's honestly being wasted there. I heard that she's working with Mike Sinterniklaas on something? Because if so that would honestly be great! Seeing her in a proper dub would be nice.

@Soul-dragon NYAV Post is where a Lot of NY and LA Talent shine.

If Sarah works with Micheal Sinterniklaas or Stephanie Sheh directing her, then I feel she is in Good Hands.

@EPA Deane Agreed. And I'd honestly love to see some of the other TCPI VAs like Laurie Hymes, Elieen Stevens, Jonathan Sliver and Michael Liscio Jr at NYAV post sometime soon. I know that they could blow us/me away with better direction and the right role.

My favourite roles from her are Ash, Sif and Wigglytuff but her role in Bullet Witch was the one standout point in that game as well

Happy late birthday to Natochenny. While of course the recasting caused major controversy and devided many fans a plenty, I feel that with much better VD she could be a pretty decent Ash. Also she makes a great Sif too.

I thought the English Pokemon dub was moved to LA in 2006. They still recorded the English dub in NY even after 4Kids lost the license?

It was always in NY. TPCI took it inhouse and used TAJ Productions for a time because it was cheaper. But they never moved it outside of NY.

I liked Sarah's brief stint in Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc V as Aura/Mieru. She was the was last person I was expecting to get cast as one of Aoi Yuki's energetic characters, but my, she pulled off the squeaky-sounding fangirl act better than I could have imagined.

About her time in Pokemon... yeah, I'm not going to comment on that. A lot of the discussion surrounding the new cast and crew tends to enrage me, and I'll leave it at that.

@nikipotamus I just took a listen and I agree! It honestly makes me feel that she would've fit Mallow way better than her (miscast) English voice. I really hope she gets more work outside of Pokemon since as many have noted, she's being severely wasted there.

Veronica Taylor is still Ash Ketchum to me, but I think Sarah Natochenny is good in the role too, her best role to me I think is Elesa, Sarah is a model after all so it's only natural that a model voices a model, it's too bad that she didn't voice the character more, she had potential.

@wdf1 Too bad she wasn't Elesa in the anime... then again considering what Elesa was like in the anime she might have gotten lucky

Happy B-day, Sarah Natochenny! Her Ash Ketchum is wildly inconsistent to say the least, though I do actually enjoy her as Sif and I recall liking her performances as Cheryl, Johanna, and Holly. I'd like to see Natochenny be involved in something that *isn't* Pokemon later down the road.

Sarah mentioned at a recent con that she'd nearly broken down when she thought that she hadn't got the role of Ash. She also talked briefly about the hate mail she'd received when she when she first took over for Veronica Taylor.
She was very civil and friendly. Considering that she was in her late teens at the time, must have stunk to be a young actress in position.

I thought her second accent should have been kept as it was tollerable.

The 1st accent and current accent are bad voice directed but I think if she just treaked her 2nd accent a little into a kids tone easily now done in Audacity she could have had a spot on Ash by this point with Audacity treaking of her 2nd accent instead of going for a 3rd fast version with too high pitched sound.
said at 2:28 AM on Sun Nov 12 2017
That's not what accent means. And using a voice changer to do a regular human's voice is generally frowned upon in professional VO. Ash isn't a demon; his voice shouldn't have to be tweaked by a voice changer to make it wrong.

Ill admit it. I think she's a great Ash. I know alot of people are saying she's not good, but if you listen to Kayzie Rogers as Ash, you'll be thankful she became Ash's new voice.
said at 5:45 AM on Sat Jan 9 2016
@Joel the Pokekid
I respect your opinion, but I listened to Kayzie as Ash and...truthfully, I'm disappointed they went with Sarah. To me, Kayzie sounded more like a boy than Sarah does, and she seemed to emote a little better (though was still quite bad overall, no way am I denying that). Even after 9 years and 3 main voice directors (contrast this with her predecessor, Veronica Taylor, who had 8 years and 2 main voice directors), I feel Sarah's Ash now sounds like a woman doing a really deep voice, and her acting is dull/bored/monotone most of the time. I just wish the dub would be recast again, honestly, I'd like to see another crew get a chance.

It's not just Sarah or the actors' performances that I have an issue with regarding the TPCi dub, though, although I do think they are extremely sub-par: there's the script writing, which consists of slang, alliteration, rhymes, and awkward lines given for the actors to say, and then there's Ed Goldfarb's music composition which lacks adventurous feeling, brevity, blaring constantly with a faux-opera/ballet tone, as well as the poor composition of the intros/endings that seem like they never even try to put effort into them or do extremely bad rehashes of 4Kids' themes in the case of the last 2 XY themes, the lack of proper voice/vocal direction, etc. The whole production is just so low quality to me, it feels, not sure what else to say, really. To each their own, though.
said at 3:29 PM on Sat Jul 16 2016
@Joel the Pokekid Agreed, but still. People will alway's have different opinions about her. Sone people like her some people hate her, and we just have to learn to accept everyone's opinions.

@Dr.Who That biker music is shockingly generic and doesn't even suit the rock and roll format of XYZ quite like thoses lines Let's go Z/Here Goes Z" and 1 Million Volts which puts shivers down your spine everytime you here them.

I admit that honestly I have literally the same thoughts as Autovolt on her Ash performance, and I think her Delia sounds very...err...forced, masculine, and rather monotone in delivery. However, I admit that Sarah's voice acting as Sif, and as Alicia in Bullet Witch, respectively, was fairly fitting to me.

I'd like to hear more from Ms. Natochenny that's not Pokemon in the future: it really seems like she has potential as an actress, but is being bogged down by the less-than-stellar vocal direction of the TPCi dub over the years.

OK I'll admit even after over a decade later I still don't think she's at all a good fit for Ash. The voice is really forced, raspy and makes me think its totally a voice a woman is putting on trying too hard to sound like a boy unlike say Veronica Taylor. It's true she does sound more like Rica Matsumoto than Taylor did but sometimes it's better to go down a route where you're not doing an impression but make the character's voice your own.

With that said I don't think Sarah is a bad person nor is she a bad actress or rather I think she still has potential. I kind of remember some of her other roles in the Pokemon anime like her Cheryl, she actually sounds really good there, almost like Willow Johnson and then there is the time she voiced Lady Sif in the Thor: The Dark World IOS game and she sounds amazing as Sif....she just blew me away here. I mean yeah Sif's not a deep or important role but honestly I think she's the best voice this character has gotten yet.

I think what's been holding her back is 1.) The obvious mediocre voice direction she gets on Pokemon and 2.) she was always miscast as Ash from the get-go. If someone like say Michael Sinterniklaas brought her into the NYAV Post recording studio. I think she could bring in some excellent performances.

I'd love to hear her in more things that aren't Pokemon because deep down her raspy and throaty Ash Ketchum voice there still lies a potentially great VA within.

I recently listened to an interview with Sarah, and she seems like a pretty cool person, and very professional too. And yes, she's very well aware of the "controversy" surrounding her performance as Ash. Honestly, I think it's pretty pointless to complain about something that happened a decade ago now, especially something that, really, was not her fault. Whether you like her performance or not, Sarah took on a very difficult situation, and she's kept at it for 10 years. Acting and voice acting are supposed to be fun, and it appears Sarah enjoys and appreciates her time on Pokemon without letting any internet reputation get in the way of that. She deserves at least some respect for that.
I haven't kept up with internet chatter in a while, but if people ARE still complaining about her, I say it's just time to move on. I enjoy Veronica Taylor as much as the next person, but the whole situation has always been blown way out of proportion, especially with the personal attacks!

The odd thing is that she isn't too bad in things like this Character Reel:

Her Tina Travers, Lana Del Rey, Natalie Portman, Sofa the Russian Hoarder, and Russell Brand were pretty amusing. So why is her voice acting so....wooden?!!

@DravenRoth994 I'm sorry but I found the character reel a tad bit cringeworthy.

I dunno.

but with that said, based on a few of her other voices roles ones that aren't Ash. I think she still has potential. Because let's be honest here everyone that works in the TCPI dub is held back by Tom Wayland's inept direction especially the people that either came in at the beginning to replace the 4Kids VA's and the newcomers who've never appeared in better dubs either.
said at 11:08 PM on Mon Nov 9 2015

I'd say that given Tom's predecessors Larry Juris/Armen Mazlumian from TAJ, and his current successor Theresa Buchheister of DuArt have also been directors for the TPCi dub, and the cast didn't and hasn't really performed any better under either of them...that there's a really good chance that the dub is suffering from miscast voice actors in roles that don't suit their talents in general right now.

It's a shame because it seems like their work in other Series is decent in comparison, too, though.

I don't like her Ash at all, minus her early BW work, which is the only time I think she was okay/tolerable in the role: shame she went back down the toilet in XY in the role- she really needs to make the pitch of her voice higher and realize she's voicing a kid, and not a teenager...or an adult.
