Huh, he wasn't who I was wanting or expecting to play Meruem , but he's certainly proved his versatility at this point. The character's in good hands.
said at 9:52 PM on Sun Apr 8 2018
@nikipotamus TBH, I had a feeling he was going to be Meruem to moment they were about to start dubbing the Chimera Ant arc and I'm very excited with this casting choice. He even was my head-canon choice for this character given Meruem's personality and character development in the arc and he seems to match well with some of the other characters Max has voiced.

However, my expectations for him to be Meruem was 50/50, since I also thought he was going to be cast in the role as either Colt, Cheetu, or Shaiapouf, mostly the latter given the show's unexpected casting choices in the English dub, especially with certain actors being cast as certain characters I wasn't wanting/expecting (e.g. Kira Buckland as Zushi, Erica Lindbeck as Pakunoda, Kirk Thornton as Dalzollene, Faye Mata as Neon, Patrick Seitz as Uvogin, Marc Diraison as the Turtle Ant, Edward Bosco as Goreinu/Franklin, Laura Post as Haruna, Reba Buhr as Podungo etc..).

Interestingly enough, I also initially thought Zach Aguilar (Colt) would've wound up being cast as Meruem while Max Mittelman would've been Colt.

As much as I like Ray Chase and wonder if all time ranking is really that important I guess I'll comment here just for the sake of not wanting anyone to get left behind (though I'm not on anyones team...). Anyways it's pretty safe to say that Max plays Leo to perfection. He was the great fit for the smart and somewhat ditzy and egotistical scholar with an inferiority complex. I also liked him as Kousei in YIIA and Plagg in Miraculous Ladybug!

(Again just to be clear not taking sides but if senpai notices me then it might be worth it).

I don't ever admit this openly but I loved him SO much as Ryuji Sakamoto in Persona 5 it's embarrassing.

Ryuji was the first role I heard him in and because he knocked it out of the park so hard I've taken the time to go back and watched other shows that he's been in. It brings such a huge smile to my face to hear how much he's improved over the years and I'm so proud of him as his roles keep getting bigger and better. I'm currently loving him in Bungo Stray Dogs and I CANNOT WAIT until they finally release and dub season 2 of One Punch Man. His hard work shows and I couldn't be happier or prouder of him.

I've told everyone I know about him and to quote one of my very best friends:

"Okay, I have to give it to you, Max's acting is genuinely getting me more interested in listening to English dubs."

You're a rock star, dude.

(P.S. I hope this helps! ;P)

Happy Birthday Max Mittelman!

My top 10 favourite roles of his are:

1.) Saitama (One Punch Man)
2.) King (The Seven Deadly Sins)
3.) Blurr (Transformers: Robots In Disguise)
4.) Plagg (Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir)
5.) Hisamitsu Noto (Toradora!)
6.) Yunan (Magi)
7.) Hiroto Shijima (Durarara!!)
8.) Yoshida the Mimic (Blood Lad)
9.) Jimmy Olsen (Justice League Action)
10.) Parasite (Justice League Action)

It was great hearing Max in Justice League Action. He was a fantastic fit for the role of Jimmy Olsen and his Parasite was a nice change of pace for him and a good example of his range, going in a much creepier direction than Max is usually known for.

It was also awesome hearing Max as Blurr again, being the first and probably only Rescue Bots character to appear in another series. His short time in RID was very refreshing to see and he managed to have great chemistry with the rest of the RID gang. I was rather sad when he left a few episodes later. I hope he can come back for the finale but I doubt that will happen, a lot of stuff is going on in the show right now. Max is definitely my 2nd favourite Blurr voice after the great John Moschitta Jr. of course.

It also really surprised me that he's going to be voicing Kira Yamato in the remastered Gundam SEED dub they're doing at the NYAV Post. Max is beinging to become a bit like Brad Swaile and Steve Staley, playing major parts in multiple Gundam series. According to Stephanie Sheh, the Japanese producers at Sunrise weren't so sure of him playing Kira because he's already done a lot in the franchise in such a short time but Stephanie believes he's a perfect fit for the part. I personally myself don't like the fact Ocean got replaced once again when it came time to do a re-dub for a anime series they once did but I am curious how Max will do Kira Yamato. Matt Hill legit did an amazing job in the role. I'm sure Max will approach the role in a manner much closer to Soichiro Hoshi.....though hopefully with much better crying.

It's also a bit amusing that he's currently Harry Osborn in Marvel's Spider-Man, especially since his voice acting debut was as the Rhino in Ultimate Spider-Man. Man he's really come a long way in just a short 5 years.

And finally, congrats on landing the role of Ryuji Sakamoto in Persona 5.

Keep up the great work Max!

First time I heard him was Rhino in Ultimate Spider-Man; wasn't impressed to put it kindly. He's gotten much better since then but still don't think he's all that special or amazing as many here claim. Ranking primarily dub actors of similar age and even California-only I wouldn't include him in a top 20 under 30 list.

Several VAs can accumulate a lot of roles in a short span but that doesn't necessarily mean they're a 'rising star' or destined for great success; stats can be misleading.

A question I often ask myself to weed out 'pretenders' and 'legit' good up and comers is "are they THE best performer of the ensemble if they're constantly a lead character?"

If they get outdone by someone else (or several people) majority of the time IMO it's hard to defend their actual value if the voice acting is still enjoyable despite that person actually being a weak link or it's even better when the person isn't involved at all but there's still the same usual suspects.

I'd honestly be surprised if he can sustain an increased trajectory of work over the next few years but I have no problem being proven wrong.

I would be surprised if he actually got nominated for anything for the 2016 BTVA Awards (there's way too many better VAs and a massive increase of dubs this particular year) but I'm sure some fans will still end up complaining about a 'snub' by flawed logic of thinking more popular characters/titles should always be a higher priority or get a free pass.
said at 3:29 AM on Sun Dec 18 2016
@JF1991 I think he's a great VA personally. He gave three characters in Fates three VERY distinctive voices. And from what I've seen. He's done a fantastic job bringing out what makes Saitama so lovable to people.

But hey! I definitely respect your opinion though. You seem like a pretty intelligent individual.

This guy is a real up and coming rising star in the VA field it seems. I had no idea who he was until fairly recently with Persona 5. This is one guy, along with Robbie Daymond and Ray Chase, that has a lot of potential and looks to be a legitimately rising star right now. Guess I oughtta start paying attention to him now.

Max definitely has a lot of potential to become a pretty notable name some day, guess I oughtta look out for what work he gets in the future! Definitely looking forward to his performance as Ryuji in P5!

@ScraftyIsTheBest A lot of us learned his name, as well as Robbie & Ray's, thru One-Punch Man & the handful of other anime they've done in the last year or two. Plus Breadwinners & recently FFXV.

That being said, Max's bank account (& Twitter following) will hopefully *skyrocket* with his new work as Jimmy Olsen on Justice League Action. (Congrats!)

@Unknownsage13 I know that Max specifically auditioned for Genos after he worked on Star Ocean 5, because he had done Fidel Camuze & the same Japanese VA did Genos (& his character in Atelier Ayesha, looking up his credits). He mentioned this at Animate Florida 2016. The English VA of Batou was *specifically* asked for to replace Billy Zane in KH2, because Akio Otsuka who voiced Batou in Japanese, also voiced Ansem. (They could've possibly gone with Solid Snake instead?) They also did this for Gaius in FF14.

* Sabat also mentions that since Kenji Utsumi voiced Armstrong, they thought Sabat would also be good for the similarly hammy, deep-voiced Garland in Dissidia. & maybe coincidence but Gilgamesh's later Japanese VA is also Wakka's, & John DiMaggio did both.

This is possibly an iffy casting mechanism - actors are their *own* people with their *own* performance decisions - but it possibly stems from the fact the Japanese producers are used to their *own* VAs dub over the same live-actor. This happens in most countries where there is a decent VA pool, & Japan's rivals our own (although their overall profit/size is much smaller). James Arnold Taylor linked to a documentary on his Twitter account, on foreign-dubbing. I'll go ask him.

He definitely has come a long way since he started out in voiceover, and never fails to disappoint on whichever role he plays.

He was fantastic as Saitama in One-Punch Man as he manages to portray him in both deadpan and comedic moments in the show. I would be surprised if his role will be in next years BTVA's Anime Awards.

I also enjoyed his other roles including King (Seven Deadly Sins), Hikari Sakishima (A Lull in the Sea), Yoshida the Mimic (Blood Lad), Plagg (Miraculous Ladybug), Hiroto Shijima (Durarara!!x2), and Kosei Arima (Your Lie in April).

Happy Birthday Max Mitttelman!

The Breakout VA of 2015!

He definitely continues to prove himself that he's got what it takes to be a leading man VA.

As I've Mentioned before a few times, he is pretty much what I call a breakout talent, despite having been in the industry for a while now, in the past year or so he's finally getting the major roles and recognition for his work and that's fantastic.

Currently my favourite role of Max's is Saitama from One Punch Man. I remember that most fans wanted Ben Diskin in the role of the bald headed hero but Max has proven so far to be not only a unique out of the box casting choice but also a great fit for the role, he manages to sound perfectly deadpan yet funny and energetic when needed. His delivery of some his lines, had me in stitches. No doubt this will most likely be his most iconic role when talked about in the years to come.

He also showed a lot of range as King in The Seven Deadly Sins, he was a great fit for this character as well. I'd say he's a runner up for favourite role of his right now.

I also loved his performances as Blurr, Plagg, Yunan, Yoshida the Mimic, Hisamitsu Noto, Hiroto Shijima and yes Ein Dalton too.

I think it's pretty great that much like his friends and fellow VA's like Ben Diskin and Robbie Daymond, he does a lot of both anime and cartoons. I really love that about a lot of the new talent, being able to do it all.

Overall he really has come a long way as a VA, ever since we first mistook his name for Mads Mikkelsen in Ultimate Spider-Man.

Guys, for anyone here please do me a big favor. In your opinion what do you think makes a role for a VA better than their other roles? (For example: Why is Sasuke Uchiha the best role of Yuri Lowenthal or Saitama for Max Mittelman)
said at 6:06 PM on Mon Aug 1 2016
@4xNicholas Something about Superhero/fighting roles (especially for big hit anime like one punch man and naruto) just brings the best out of an actor because when you just watch them scream or yell you get so engaged in the show. Its the reason todd haberkorns best role is Natsu, JYB is so well known for his Ichigo, Le Louch, etc..., and why Bryce was great as Rin, Kirito, and Eren. Guess the fact that you can truly see how great the actor really is when they put all that emotion and passion out there.

I'm not sure how to say this without you being offended but here I go.

I haven't been a member here that long but before I finally registered I have browsed the site often. During that time I've seen you comment... a lot.

When you're constantly praising everything and everyone it becomes difficult to take your opinions very seriously if that's your intention. Either you're a very positive person IRL so the idea of criticism isn't part of your personality, or you're fishing for feedback and hoping everyone cares about what you think.

Also considering casual animation fans probably don't watch a lot of anime unless it's zapped into their TV for their convenience is it really a surprise it's his most popular role atm? I'd wager if any other anime aired on TV his role in that would have the most votes too.

Ultimately though I don't see why it really matters. He doesn't even have 100 total votes yet so given time some other role could end up being more popular; especially to bandwagon fans who'll clamor to the next big popular thing and some of them could end up changing their vote to another role someday.

If you enjoy his role, cool, I'm not going to try and convince you not to, but FWIW plenty of people don't like it so you shouldn't assume your opinion always = the majority and the "correct" side because that how a lot of your comments come across. It's sometimes cringe-worthy to read and I'd feel bad for you if people were laughing at you behind your back.

Looks even worse when all the performances you say are "best ever" (which seems to be everything...) don't even get nominated for the BTVA Awards so you start to loose credibility IMO and then it looks like you're some guy who likes to hear himself talk/read his own words...

If you'd like to continue this conversation send me a PM.

@BioZero216 I'm going to have to agree with JF1991 here (and in honesty, I clicked shout out by accident)

While vitriol isn't helpful neither is excessive praise. I know you don't like dub haters, but simply praising VAs without actually looking at what they did right or wrong doesn't do them any service either. Excessive praise isn't constructive criticism.

If you sincerely feel that a VA is doing a good job, that's fine. But don't go off getting into fights with people in youtube comments because they threw shade at a dub or the VAs involved in it.

I honestly liked Max as a VA before the OPM dub, but even then I still had some trouble hearing his voice as Saitama at first (Although I'm warming up to it). Basically, just let people not like things you like. Even if they're being rude about it you don't have to waste your time addressing them.

@JF1991 As someone who has interacted with Zero for the past two years, I definitely agree with this comment completely. He comes across as too optimistic alot of the time. And don't get me started on his various dub hater rants on Twitter. Often he'll search for people that don't like dubs & project his opinions on them. Actively seeking these people for expressing an opinion that doesn't line up with your own, makes him look really bad & like you said, fishing for feedback. His hate for them gets so bad he ends up wishing some pretty hurtful things onto them. I don't think he quite grasps the fact that he's being hypocritical when he's on this crusade, so to speak. To where I have had to call him out so many times to where I've lost count.

That being said, back to Max Mittleman, personally I think it's too early to judge how good he is as a whole based off of two episodes of the dub. That's just how I feel personally. Already in my circle of Twitter friends, they've made the decision that the dub is better than the sub version. I can't fault them for thinking that, but I'm someone that doesn't really get the excessive praise either.

@JF1991 One of the reasons I'm not particularly negative on this site the majority of the time is because of this site's strict policy on negativity. If I am being negative, I'm afraid I'll say something that could come off as megative to the admins. I mean, I love this site and that's one of the reasons why. It doesn't tolerate people acting like jerks. Which is why when I use this site, I have a "If you have nothing to say nice, don't say anything at all." attitude, unless I feel very strongly about the topic.

Just stepping in to remind everyone to keep the stove on a nice simmer. :)

So far things are pretty civil, and it'd be great to keep it that way. BioZero's a positive guy here at BTVA. How he - or anyone else - behaves on OTHER sites is not our concern. (Rule #13: Keep Off-Site Drama Off This Site. If it happened elsewhere then don't bring it here.)

If anyone on the site seems to be getting out of hand, please contact an admin and direct us to the situation in question. We will deal with it.

said at 8:45 PM on Thu Jul 28 2016

Forgive me if I'm assuming here but I think you're misunderstanding some things.

For example

"Dubs suck! They make my ears bleed. Who are these no talent hacks?"

This = a clear hater, trollish comment and probably the type of comment to be blocked by the admins. There is nothing productive about this comment and little room to start a civil, logical conversation.

while this example

"I didn't like the dub. The voice didn't match the character's personality and appearance IMO. The VA sounds rough and I think *insert name* would've been a better fit"

YOU may think this is a hater comment but this is what is called a detailed explanation with constructive criticism. There is a difference. Just because something isn't positive doesn't mean it can't have merit and can't have some truth to it (even if you personally don't want to admit it or like it)

Also I don't think JF1991 was saying you should be a more negative, hateful person. But a subtle reminder that although many sub fans can be arrogant and clearly biased, that doesn't mean dubs get a free pass and dub fans should be as annoying and biased (or even more so)

IMO there's nothing wrong with constructive criticism if it leads to improvement or better decision making in the future.
said at 8:50 PM on Thu Jul 28 2016
@Honest_Guy_Says Yeah. I usually have a problem with people who are being really arrogant abkut it. I love and appreciate dub VA's a lot and seeimg them disrespected really irriatates me. Considering how badly they get paid, I just wish people would give them more credit. They deserve better. I'm talking about the public as a whole, actually. Not this site, which thankfully, has plenty of likable and mature people.

@Shaun Ince My intention isn't to defend BioZero's offsite behavior by saying this, but publicly announcing his faults on a site like this where he has a pretty clean slate and tries to be positive isn't a very kind or productive thing to do. That isn't going to help how he acts elsewhere, and all it's likely to do is get people who don't know about it to see him in a negative light and make this a less comfortable place for him to be, where he focuses more on the positive side of things.

This just spreads negativity, and would be better spoken about in private, if at all.

@PsychicVoiceSpy Yeah good point. Perhaps it would have been much better to discuss this thing off the site. On the flipside I don't feel bad about criticizing Zero, because he can be pretty outlandish at times and I feel he needs someone to bring him back to reality and realise that he shouldn't take petty internet hate too seriously. For future reference if I do have to call him out I won't do it on this site, cuz as I can see it has spread some form of negativity in this comment section. I share some degree of the blame here, that much is true

Hope that clears everything up. This is the first & last time I do something like this.

@Shaun Ince To clarify something further, I don't hate Zero at all. That whole rant about him was based on instinct and doesn't represent my thoughts on him as a whole. I shouldn't have put him down like I did, it only made me look like an a-hole & spread negativity. I've already apologized to Zero privately & I apologize to any inconvenience this may have caused.
said at 6:09 PM on Sat Jul 30 2016
@BioZero216 I should apologize as well.

While I admittedly have some grievances, I shouldn't have tried to shame you online as well.

Perhaps we could talk in private next time?

@Shaun Ince Frankly, I wouldn't call most voice actors "household names" either.

That's not a diss to VA's, I love them, but it's understandable that most people don't know the names of most VA's, like there are people in majorly selling video games or famous cartoons that are more popular, like John DiMaggio as Bender, Troy Baker as Joel, Booker, & Joker (notice he was fairly quiet in his anime days), Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime (picked up during the live-action film run), & Mark Hamill as Joker (he's got a pretty big live-action role to boost this). Jennifer Hale as FemShep, & perhaps Tara Strong (going by Twitter).

The more casual "geeks" (aka after geek culture dissolved into mainstream culture) who regularly pay attention to American animation may know some bigger names like Corey Burton, Frank Welker, Jim Cummings, Rob Paulsen, JAT, Grey DeLisle, Tress MacNeille, Jess Harnell, you get the picture.

* Anime VA's, who ironically are paid nothing, were the *first* VA's to really have a group of dedicated fans. Bob Bergen talks about this way back in 2004.

There's another forum thread that talks about this, but it is kind of lame that back then, same as today, dub VA's are paid almost nothing, & now with the proliferation of geek culture they aren't even "popular VA's". If Hollywood & Japan cooperated more often, anime wouldn't be barred from the way that geek culture has grown.

All that aside, my point is that calling VA's "household names" is really overstating them. & they don't really *need* to be - a lot of VA's are doing just fine. I mean Don LaFontaine was the highest-paid actor in all of SAG-AFTRA...

You're going on off a massive tangent when the context makes it clear that we're referring to household names *within the context of voice acting*
said at 7:49 PM on Sun Oct 9 2016
@NCZ In general, I think that "household names" are a somewhat subjective concept.

& the context here is also confusing to me. Is JF1991 insinuating that most BTVA members are "casual animation fans who only watch anime zapped onto their TV"?

Because that's visibly untrue, seeing as a ton of us watch both subs & dubs, & plenty of shows that don't air on TV. On the other hand, Bio mostly talks about dubs, & in fact Max mostly is known for dubs. So I would say that in the context of Shaun & Bio's discussion, they're talking about *dub VO*.

I was trying to point out the size of the niche of dubs within the niche of VO. It's just difficult for me to tie it all together without comments sounding bloated.

But that's just me.

My assessment. His power (strength of delivery of a line to feel the weight and emotion of the character.) and his overall voice are great for Saitama. Better than the sub actually. Well Done Max! :)
said at 12:49 AM on Fri Jul 29 2016
@4xNicholas I feel that he may display that now. But since it is not too there in the future. I may change my mind. For now he is a really good VA. I may not like his higher voices but his deeper ones like Leo, Fidel and Saitama are good.

(In my opinion every VA has good and bad work. I want to say both as a sign of my desire to give constructive criticism and also to let you know, I actually like these people and that they actually do good work.)

Watched one punch man last night and loved him just like I did his Fidel, King, Ein (small role but still), and Leo. He sounds like a mix of Bryce papenbrook, and Yuri lowenthal, and hes my favorite VA right now along with todd lol.

I think he's going to nail Saitama just based off the Toonami trailer alone.

He has the attitude down perfectly, you might say it's dry but that's kind of how Saitama is suppose to sound. One guy on Twitter who goes by the name of AuraofAzure said it best that "The key to Saitama's character is his exhaustion, boredom, and apathy. Max Mittleman has it NAILED."

And You know what I'm actually satisfied with Max voicing Saitama, Max while he is becoming a rising star and still isn't as prolific of a VA like say Ben Diskin is, so in some way it mirrors the casting of Makoto Furukawa (Saitama's seiyuu) , who wasn't much of a heavy hitter till he took on the role of everyone's favourite bald hero.

Well either way, Saitama really will be Max's star making role much like Makoto, like if you hadn't already heard of this guy, you will now.

He's really come a long way since first voicing Rhino in Ultimate Spider-Man, remember when we all mistook the episodes credit for him being Mads Mikkelsen. Good Times.

Can't we have NotBen's comment down below removed and have this user blocked for good? I just don't see why you would give him just 6 shoutouts if the comment is violating site guidelines by using blatant negativity and insults over a voice actor.

I also think IMO it's very, very rude to insult someone like Max Mittelman, along with any other voice actors that are in the same boat he's in (Bryce Papenbrook, Kyle McCarley, Cristina Vee, the three Eric(k)as (Mendez, Harlacher, and Lindbeck), among others) with death threats and mail-hatred. Keep in mind, they are just normal people like us doing their job just to enjoy what they can accomplish.

Besides, I enjoy a lot of the roles Max Mittelman puts his effort in, from the emotions and the voice range he provides during the dramatic parts of the dub. So why make insulting remarks at him or anyone else involved in their hard work and effort in dubbing?

Lastly if anyone that is reading this, and if they ever encounter another user makong those remarks, "don't listen to what they say at you and if they might bring you down!" Just enjoy what you're doing and keep your chin-up without having obstacles hindering your progress.

@DisneyAnimefan1995 Clearly you weren't reading NotBen's comment well enough to get the joke. Just look at the very last line.
said at 6:58 PM on Sat May 7 2016
@JRPictures I read the last line, but to be frank JRPictures and the rest of you, I don't see why you find the joke funny? Yes, the joke is meant to be a play on words, and that's fine I respect that all of you want to have fun, myself included when it comes to jokes. However, some people might misinterpret those jokes as a sign of insult and making them feel down, offended or embarrassed because of this issue. I don't doubt that Max Mittelman on Twitter is feeling offended by now, even though he might realize sooner than later that it was an actual joke on the sight and brushed it off. :/

I don't want to beat a dead horse on you guys, but in respect on not wanting to have myself blocked permanently I want to go back to having a normal discussion.

Oh, for the love of....

Dude. I'm Ben Diskin. I'm a voice actor and friend of Max. We were working together on a project recently and he told me that people online are constantly saying he sounds like me. I thought it was funny and said, "Dude, I'm totally going to go on the Internet and talk crap about how you sound like me!" We had a good laugh. It was a joke. It was a joke Max has been in on from the beginning. No feelings were hurt. Max's "outrage" on Twitter was staged. He knew it was me and never DIDN'T know it was me.

Sheesh!!!! :P

He'll probably never have any career of any kind because he sounds 100% EXACTLY like Ben Diskin who's good, you guys, like SUPER GOOD. Not that I'd know. I'm not Ben Diskin. That guy's like a voice over GAWD or something.

Ben's CERTAINLY not the type who'd go on Max's page at BTVA to post some mean comment just to see if Max sees this. I would never do such a childish thing. ... I MEAN "HE!" HE would never do such a childish thing!

Between this and being the new voice of Blurr on Rescue Bots....he also did a voice on this weeks episode of The Big Bang Theory.

In a matter of one week this guy has just shown up on my radar all over the place and that's awesome. He seems to be one of the only few VA's that's doing both cartoons and dubbing anime. I tip my hat to you Max Mittelman.
