I didn't know he had such a low range when playing characters such as Fumikage Tokoyami and Haka. Awesome!

Happy Birthday Josh Grelle!

My top 10 favourite roles of his are:

1.) Kuranosuke Koibuchi (Princess Jellyfish)
2.) Issei Hyodo (High School DXD)
3.) Nobuchika Ginoza (Psycho-Pass)
4.) Sadao Maou/Satan Jacob (The Devil is a Part-Timer)
5.) Shimazu Toyohisa (Drifters)
6.) Yuri Katsuki (Yuri On Ice!)
7.) Ryo Yokae (ReLIFE)
8.) Femt (Blood Blockade Battlefront)
9.) Ox Ford (Soul Eater)
10.) Akihisa Yoshii (Baka & Test)

I actually got to meet Josh Grelle at the Canada Fan Expo back in late August and he was pretty awesome.

As for his more recent work, I really enjoyed his performance as Shimazu Toyohisa from what I've heard of him in the role. I haven't seen the entirety of the Drifters dub but wow, Josh was absolutely terrifying as Toyohisa. I had never been that terrified of Josh in any of his role, cause he rarely plays characters like Toyohisa so not only was a great playing against type role for him but he was downright chilling to hear. It's also hilarious when you remember he was voicing Yuri Katsuki on Yuri On Ice! during the exact same time, which truly shows how versatile and skilled Josh is as a VA. I know I used to not like his work but now I believe he is easily one of Funimation's best talents.

I also really enjoyed his performance as Yoake in ReLIFE, he reminds me a lot of Kevin T. Collin's Griffith surprisingly enough at times in his delivery and voice. Despite not being a villain, it's pretty impressive, and it makes me hope Grelle will eventually play a character similar to Griffith at some point.

and lastly I look forward to hearing more of his Issei in the upcoming season of High School DXD Hero. Hopefully this time he can surpass Scott Freeman's rendition in the role. I hope the dub for Hero is a huge step up from Born's quality which honestly sounded off to me.

Totally predictable a casting choice as he was, Josh did a good enough job at voicing Tanukichi Okuma. Also his performance as Satan Jacob/Sadao Maou was very lovable, too.

Once more, Happy Birthday Josh Grelle! By the by, it took me until recently to realize his surname is pronounced "Gree-lee". For the longest time I was saying it "Grell" - as in, *that* character from Black Butler.

I wish Josh could be in more video game voice-over work; he did pretty well in Tales of Xillia 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles X. I'm surprised he's not in a Fire Emblem game.

Also, and this is just a random thought, but does anyone feel that he could have made a spectacular performance as Ulquiorra Cifer from Bleach? I know Tony Oliver did awesome in the role, but like I said, it's just a random thought.

I'm honestly not the biggest Josh Grelle fan. A lot of times his voice sounds out of place. Still, he does his damnedest to give emotions and he does.

However, I do think that there is one role that is probably his best and most convincing: Tyrian from RWBY. I had no idea it was him and it blew my mind to see him like that. Bravo for that, Grelle. You exceeded my expectations.

Happy Birthday, Josh Grelle! Honestly I can say without hesitation that he isn't one of my favorite VAs affiliated with FUNimation and/or Sentai Filmworks; if anything, he's a tad overrated. However, he's also a very respectable voice actor with more range than expected. My favorite Grelle roles include Chiqicheetah, Tomohiko Kazami, Daedalus, Francois Vidocq, Armin Arlert, Ox Ford, Tyrian, Izayoi Sakamaki, and Fumikage Tokoyami. Josh also did quite a great job as Issei Hyoudo in DxD BorN.

Josh is just the best voice actor there is, period. not just because his voice is so unique but also because he can genuinely color it with any emotion.

may it be the firghtful and later emotionally detached Yukki in Future Diaries.
may it be Ludger and Victor in Tales of Xillia 2 where he portraits two alternate versions of the same entity that are so very different and even battle each other.
may it be frikking Sadao who can be so off-handedly dissmissive and sarcastic.
or may it be the reserved and analytical Ginoza from Psycho Pass.

Josh, you are a genius

I damn near fell off my chair when I found out that Satan's last name was Jacob.
Josh Grelle, you are my favorite voice actor. You are fantastic as SO many different kinds of characters! That's not a common quality-- You can play both the terrified cowardly idiot, the AWESOME badass cocky/arrogant GEINUS, the badass idiot, some person that you could very well qualify as an insane idiot, (okay I'm naming a bunch of idiot types) and you can play the badass intelligent man who just stays on the quiet side. Or, the awesome dude who just had a TERRIBLE accident and is now the harem king of one of the greatest romantic comedies of all time besides Ouran. *Cough* Shido from Date A Live *Cough*
I mean, Togami (DanganRonpa) and Armin (Attack on Titan) are VERY different people, yet you pulled them off WONDERFULLY! So are Yuki (The Future Diary) and Izayoi (Problem Children are Coming from Another World, Aren't They?), and I still wanna marry 'em both. (Not that I would go NEAR Yuki. . . . *Shudders*)
I'll list my Top 5 Josh Grelle characters:
1) Izayoi Samaki, from Problem Children are Coming from Another World, Aren't They?
2) Yukiteru Amano from The Future Diary
3) Byakura Togami from DanganRonpa: The Animation (Otherwise known as DanganRonpa: Trigger Happy Havoc!)
4) Sadao Maou from The Devil is a Part-Timer!
5) Shido Itsuka from Date A Live

Happy Birthday Josh Grelle!

He's definitely an excellent VA able to pull off so many different kinds of roles but I'll be the first to admit that initially I wasn't the biggest fan of his work. I kinda blame that on the fact my first main experience when recognizing Josh was Yukiteru Amano from Future Diary....this wasn't a good first impression on me at all, I dropped the show only a few episodes in and I still consider it one of the worst FUNimation dubs ever.

However my opinion of him changed the moment I heard him voice Nobuchika Ginoza in Psycho-Pass who doesn't sound anything like a whiny little kid but sounds like a mature adult with a way deeper sounding voice than I've heard him do before. I thought he sounded really cool as Ginoza and I began to appreciate his voice work afterwards getting to here his range from a whiny kid to a mature adult.

I think my favourite role of the characters he's played so far is Sadao Maou in The Devil is a Part-Timer, another cool role that he got to do, that shows off his range, striking a perfect balance of cool, badass and adorkably endearing. A close runner-up is Kuranosuke Koibuchi in Princess Jellyfish, a really sweet male crossdresser with a heart of gold, Josh very much so impressed me here, he can do a woman like voice very well, probably one of the best takes a male VA who can do that I've heard thus far.

I also loved his performances as Akihisa Yoshii, Ox Ford, Femt, Hughes, Haruka Shigi, Hatsuya Kaitabi, Kotetsu, Echo and then there's his Armin Arlert (who while I still think he was miscast and should been Eren instead, the screams he did were bonechillingly powerful and then there's Issei Hyodo (while I still prefer Scott Freeman's take, I thought Josh did an admirable job taking over as Issei especially with his hot blooded screams, I'm sure that if we get more seasons of High School DXD and under better direction he might someday surpass Scott in the role.

I know I talk a lot about his screams but he's a friggin beast when it comes to do doing them, I really wish I could have seen him do Simon in Gurren Lagann back when ADV had the rights, even if Yuri Lowenthal was perfect in the end. I hope Josh gets to spread his wings and work in LA more often, I think he's proven himself numerous times and I still feel he hasn't shown us the full extent of the vocal range he's truly capable of.

@Autovolt I know, right? Josh is, like, the definition of an underdog actor; while he wasn't impressive at first, he sticked to the job and a few years later, BOOM, he's become an awesome actor!

The other day I started checking out the broadcast dub for Yuri on Ice and I have to say I'm really liking Josh's performance as Yuri Katsuki. This is a excellent fit for Josh and he plays the character really well.

I'm looking forward to his upcoming performance as Tanukichi Okuma in Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist. That just seems like another role he'll do very well in and I've kept hearing a lot of great things about the show.

Wow REALLY! You've only suggested this at least 20 times around this site...

You're going to be heart broken if he doesn't get the role aren't you?

As for what I think, sure he might be a good fit but I wouldn't be surprised if a lesser known VA gets the part instead.

Grelle is a great actor but his voice is also very recognizable. Assuming ADR Directors and Producers care about their work it wouldn't be wise to have too many well known characters sound similar if they're voiced by the same person.

Kenichi Shirahama is without a doubt Grelle's most famous role so far and definitely a breakthrough for his career (no I'm not making this up; this is the consensus among fans of his and even he's acknowledged it).

If Grelle's Eren is just going to sound like Kenichi, for me it makes his Kenichi performance less unique and special.

Though if Grelle does voice Eren hopefully it's something new. Despite my username I'm actually not that easy to please for most things. :)
said at 8:11 AM on Mon Dec 23 2013
@Mr_Ecchi_Man well, yeah. i mean from the work i've seen, josh is the only one in my mind for funimation to give eren so much power and emotion and i might be right if funimation might make josh the next big thing in funimation like todd haberkorn.

heck, josh is also a big fan of the anime so i believe he'll capture the emotion of eren. and if he doesn't get the role instead of the newbie, i'll be freaking surprised if he voices either armin or levi eversince future diary was announced
