Happy Birthday John DiMaggio!

My top 10 favourite roles of his are:

1.) Bender (Futurama)
2.) Dr. Drakken (Kim Possible)
3.) Aquaman (Batman: The Brave and the Bold)
4.) The Scotsman (Samurai Jack)
5.) Crosshairs (Transformers: Age of Extinction)
6.) Nitro Zeus (Transformers: The Last Knight)
7.) Sandman/Flint Marko (The Spectacular Spider-Man)
8.) Joker (Batman: Under The Red Hood)
9.) Rico (The Penguins of Madagascar)
10.) Jake the Dog (Adventure Time)

It was great hearing John return to the role of The Scotsman for the final season of Samurai Jack, even though it wasn't that big of a role, it was just nice to see him again.

I'm also really digging John as Lobo in Justice League Action, the Macho Man/Hulk Hogan type voice he uses for Lobo fits really nicely. A worthy second after Brad Garrett in the role. Wasn't too big on his Mongul but I chalk that up on the depiction as a whole than John, if he were playing a more traditional take, he could be amazing.

In Transformers: The Last Knight, not only did he return as Crosshairs but also took on the role of Nitro Zeus, one of the few Decepticons with personality, despite his limited screen time, his rather gung ho, brutish, crude yet affably evil personality really resonated with me. I'm hoping he becomes a future mainstay in the franchise, the way characters like Barricade became. I'd love to hear more of John as Nitro Zeus (it's basically his Lobo voice too funnily enough). His performance as Crosshairs was great as usual. He also apparentley voiced Onslaught for his one line in the movie too. Michael really put John to work in the movie, he ended up overlapping and dubbed over too of Steven Barr's originally cast roles Nitro Zeus and Onslaught. Why I'm not sure. Either way if we ever get a voice compare for Nitro Zeus. DiMaggio gets my vote for sure.

Also cool he voiced Swamp Thing recently, a bit too slow but has the right idea in sounding massive and murky. Hope he gets another shot in the role but with faster delivery.

@dcmarvelanime Duke Golgo. It is actually awesome what a great casting that is. It makes me wonder if John had auditioned for Solid Snake - he would be an awesome Snake if Kojima had more investment in the dub from the beginning
said at 7:25 AM on Sun Jul 31 2016
@huzaifa_ahmed >if Kojima had more investment in the dub from the beginning

Not really. Kojima speaks broken English, so he isn't of much help. Besides, most MGS games as of now have the English versions as the original and the JP versions as the dub. It's been like that for awhile.
said at 7:09 PM on Mon Aug 1 2016
@AntiSabat666 I was thinking of the way that anime dubs (& most game dubs, most comparably the big-budget Final Fantasy dubs) seem to have actors with similar timbres to the original actors.

The original staff *do* go through the (directors' most available) auditions, usually to get the closest voice.

Heck, Tom Cruise complimented Toshiyuki Morikawa's dub-over when he was in Japan.

..MGS doesn't seem to follow this, & to me, that's somewhat of a let-down.

* That being said, to English-speaking fans, Hayter, Clarke, Hale, & that handful of VA's that seem to frequent Kris Zimmerman's projects...will *always* be MGS for them, & Kojima, I feel, should have been more open about their differences.

>was thinking of the way that anime dubs (& most game dubs, most comparably the big-budget Final Fantasy dubs) seem to have actors with similar timbres to the original actors.

Really? Do you REALLY think the voice of Tidus in English (James Arnold Taylor) sounds ANYTHING like Masakazu Morita or that Ali Hillis is ANYTHING like Maaya Sakamoto? LOL.

The original staff *do* go through the (directors' most available) auditions, usually to get the closest voice.

No they don't. Only the nitpicky ones do that. Besides, most of the voices sound rather different even when the nitpicky ones check. The creator of the Tales of Xillia said that the dub voices were good, even though they sound nothing like the Japanese. In Code Geass, it was said that Taniguchi was involved in the dub to an extent and if you WATCH Geass, you'd know that JYB and Jun Fukuyama sound NOTHING alike. So if we go by the "creator should get involved" logic, that means that certain creators WANT a degree of difference.

>Heck, Tom Cruise complimented Toshiyuki Morikawa's dub-over when he was in Japan.

Indeed. I watched the video with Morikawa talking about voice acting. So?

>That being said, to English-speaking fans, Hayter, Clarke, Hale, & that handful of VA's that seem to frequent Kris Zimmerman's projects...will *always* be MGS for them, & Kojima, I feel, should have been more open about their differences.

I like both, to be honest BECAUSE of their differences. Yes, David Hayter sounds weird, but it's still memorable. Why should I care about the opinion of a guy whose English is broken at best? Just saying.

Happy Birthday John DiMaggio!

I love this guy, he's easily in my top five favourite VA's of all time. I think he brings so much humour and charm to so many of his roles. Bender from Futurama is easily his greatest role of all time, I mean the character himself is just hilarious but honestly without John I don't think Bender wouldn't have been as funny. I remember hearing during the audition process for the show, the creators didn't really have a voice in mind for Bender so many VA's had different interpretations for how Bender should sound, most did typical robot voices and Billy West attempted a gruff construction worker voice but John he gave Bender this loud, crass and drunken sound to his voice that just fits to a freaking tee! His other voices on Futurama were great too including Elzar, Mr. Panucci, Fry's Dad, Joey Mousepad, Igner, URL (aww yeah!), Flexo, Hermaphrobot, Sal, Barbados Slim and Robot Santa Claus.

Of course with that said, I have also loved John's many other OUTRAGEOUS roles over the years including Dr. Drakken, Jake the Dog, Fu Dog, Rico, Schnitzel, Scotsman, Joker, Aquaman, Faceless Hunter, Toyman, Vigilante, Brother Blood, Killer Croc, King Shark, Sampson, Sphinx, Sandman, Hammerhead, Rhino, Eitri, Juggernaut, Galactus, Leadfoot, Crosshairs, Groundpounder, Farnum, Vogel, Rath, Armordrillo, Four Arms, Bullfrag, Zombozo, Manly Dan, Love God, Harry Claymore, Bobo HaHa, Hannibal McFist, Motor Ed, Pizza Face, Hak Foo, Actor Iroh, Actor Toph, Sergei Petkov, General Grievous, Beard Papa and Duke Golgo.

Seriously he is awesome, the only thing that would make him even more awesome is if he ever gets to voice Wheeljack someday in either a Transformers series, movie or game, because seriously that would be perfect casting.
said at 7:55 AM on Sun Sep 4 2016
I'm looking forward to seeing how he'll pull off Lobo in Justice League Action, a bit typecast for sure but no doubt he'll fit the role well and if rumours are true, him as Darkseid as well.

I'm also hoping he'll be back as Crosshairs in Transformers: The Last Knight as well.

Happy Birthday John DiMaggio!
