Ian does a great job with comedic laid back characters such as Dandy, Brook, Whis and Gordeau. However when he needs to get serious for a part he gets serious. Berkut is easily the best example of this considering that he pretty much stole every scene the character was in.
said at 3:40 AM on Fri May 18 2018

I may be in the minority but I honestly don't think he's that great of an actor... He's definitely better than average hence still getting cast often but his voice isn't that unique; I've heard the exact same tone for his comedic or 'brah' type voice walking the the street every now and then from complete strangers.

Whenever he gets serious it usually sounds like he's grinding his teeth and unnaturally forcing the voice which doesn't always sound authentic and believable. He doesn't have a naturally deep voice like Travis Willingham for example despite being cast as a 'poor man' substitute in a few cases or roles that could've gone to Travis if he was still available and auditioned.

His serious roles sometimes have an unfortunate eye-rolling or cheesy cringe reaction. At times it's kind of difficult for me to sympathize with his character when part of my thinks this actor isn't giving a reason for me to care.

Part of the problem could be casting and not being put in good situations to always succeed. I'm sure most of what I've said so far sounds like I'm hating on the guy but FWIW I do like some of his work! I just don't think he should frequently be a top option to anchor a dub when there's no shortage of better talent options (veterans and newcomers).

Maybe it's bad luck but most of the dubs he's the 'star' of don't seem to sell very well while the bulk of his popular roles are him in a supporting capacity and jumping onto an established property.

I haven't been impressed with Ian's work for several years now; it's possible he's peaked as a actor and has little more room for growth. There's a whole crop of actors who have been in the industry fewer years that him who have surpassed him IMO.

He's done very well for himself and should be proud of that. He didn't start out big but stuck around long enough to get his chances. Maybe in the future there will be a new role that makes me a fan of his again instead of the indifference I'm feeling these days.

@JF1991 A bad actor you say? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQka4wv6BLw
said at 8:06 AM on Fri May 18 2018

JF1991 has some points that may have a bit of truth to them. I don't see the big deal about that clip TBH. Kind of just reminds me of those Japanese 'Nani' videos that people like to share and meme. Doesn't necessarily make it good acting which is different from entertainment value. Sorry if I'm butting in on the convo but for me personally a few good lines (subjective of course) doesn't redeem an entire performance if the rest of it is possibly iffy or lackluster.

e.g. Troll 2 "They eating her! And then they going to eat me.. Oh my god!"

Still a terrible movie and cringe acting but objectively entertaining.

Suck my b---- you lazy potato eater!
Happy birthday, Ian Sinclair! I was first introduced to his work on Noragami, Black Butler and Panty and Stocking and didn't really care for him then. However after his amazing performance in Fire Emblem Echoes I definitely became more curious in his work which lead to me checking out some of his other roles and man he clearly has a ton of range. To go from Berkut who I felt was going to crawl out of the screen and attack me to Brook and Romano who both made me laugh so hard is amazing. I've also been geting into Dragon Ball recently and he does a great job as Whis. Definitely looking forward to hearing more of him in the future.

He has quite the intresting range. now I know Toriko will never keep on but it was kinda unique given some other roles. it came to be no suprise that he became Brook. his voice is mostly calm yet cool, and he can voice diffrent characters too. His Zapp was a bit diffrent then compared to some other roles.
either way glad he joied the main cast of One Piece

The Steve Blum of Funimation!

Dandy is my number 1 favorite va role by him! He's one Dandy of a guy!
said at 11:31 PM on Sat Sep 24 2016

I like Steve Blum but I wouldn't consider myself a huge Steve Blum fanboy but TBH I consider this to be a bit of an insult towards Steve Blum who objectively is a better actor...

I honestly never thought of Ian as a great actor, just slightly above average.

For a while now I've seen him as a poor man's version of Travis Willingham and funny enough he ends up voicing Sousuke in Free! Eternal Summer (when all Ouran fans wanted Travis instead) and then voices Yu Kanda in D.Gray-man Hallow (a role Travis was unable to reprise). Even Toriko was a made-for-Travis role.

Neat you still like his Dandy performance because I've literally seen or heard almost no other fan talk about that dub 2 years later (time goes by fast doesn't it?)

Anyone who knows anything about voice acting and Funimation dubs knows that Ian Sinclair is simply reaping the rewards at this point in his career with good timing that occurred a few years ago; however he probably still would've gotten the opportunity at some point (e.g. Ricco Fajardo had to wait a few years for his big breaks & Aaron Dismuke's career resurgence post-FMA took a while), he just got his opportunity a lot sooner than he probably would have if a large chunk of Funimation's top male talent hadn't moved to California near the end of the decade. To be fair other VAs jumped on the opportunity during that temporary void too (Scott Freeman, Josh Grelle, Micah Solusod and for a brief time Newton Pittman & Jonathan Brooks)

Ian is capable of some good performances but he's also very inconsistent. A large majority of his performances are generic "I'm a douche brah" stereotypes and fails to sell himself as an "alpha male" protagonist which Funimation ADR Directors naively believe he can pull off, or even weirder acting decisions like making some of his characters sound half-retarded when they're not supposed to be (I strongly disliked his voice for The Reaper in Assassination Classroom for example)

He'll probably still continue to get cast in a substantial amount of new dubs indefinitely mostly thanks to his ongoing role in One Piece ("hey since you're already here recording Brook want to step into my booth when you're done?") but there are dozens upon dozens of voice actors both veteran and newcomer who are more skilled & have higher potential than Ian IMO.

On an unrelated issue it sort of bothers me that Ian himself is quick to ditch past roles of his and quickly embrace/jump on the bandwagon for newer more recent stuff (he's not the only VA guilty of this but he was way too obvious about it)

Some of his older work is actually well done and arguably better than his recent work these days but I guess if it's not a main role or super duper popular he doesn't care about them anymore...
said at 12:11 AM on Sun Sep 25 2016

You make some very interesting points which I completely agree with.

Space Dandy at the time did reek of temporary fad and that is kind of what it became. Its sales bombed in Japan and I wouldn't be surprised if the show didn't sell all that great in the U.S. too (good enough for a 1 time viewing, not good enough to own)

Also interesting that Ian won the People's Choice Award for Voice Actor of the Year despite Space Dandy not even be a credit from 2013 but because the Anime Dub Awards was launched while it was airing all the sheeple voted for him since apparently only taking into consideration what was actually relevant and released that year is too much to ask.

Hasn't been nominated since so yeah I'd agree he is overrated. Some people peak too soon and then get exposed; happens a lot to athletes and singers.

@kb24lol Well, when Ian acted as Takeru I was pretty skeptical of the choice, but Ian made his voice work for the role, so I don't see any problem with him being Subaru if given the chance.
