He knocked Xander out of the park. Despite his distinctly naturalistic voice compared to a number of the other characters and a personality that calls for a subdued yet firm performance, he displays this tranquil intensity that's really hard to pull off. You see it most prominently in his critical quotes, but it's evident in the cut scenes, too. Yet, he gets the opportunity to display range in the private quarters, where he maintains his voice while still sounding noticeably awkward and uncomfortable in more emotionally intimate situations. Although understated, his performance speaks volumes about his acting ability.

Happy Birthday David Stanbra!

I've never actually played Fire Emblem but wow he has great range that he was able to play 7 Different Characters in the same game.

Hopefully he'll start getting more work, he's proven he's a solid and versatile VA.

@Autovolt And I could barely tell it was his voice even after listening to it several times. I'm starting to hear some of the similar inflections in his voice, but even then his range just blows me away. 7 different characters in one game wow

Happy Birthday David Stanbra!

The man's work in Fates is nothing short of incredible in my opinion. His Xander is easily my favourite performance from him in the game though. Because of how much of a wise, charismatic, and kind brother figure he made him sound. Just listen to his performance in Xander's clip to get what I'm talking about.

His Kaze is also really awesome, giving him a smooth, deep, and "down-to-earth" voice that suits Kaze's character very well. And his delivery of the line "The pain will pass!" is just so freaking badass honestly. And you can't go wrong with his Shura either! He's a pretty interesting character in general I'd say, and David Stanbra gave him a suitably badass and "disgruntled" voice, but could also sound kind at times as well. Like in his "private quarters" dialogue.

Siegbert is also another great example of his range. It makes sense for Xander and his son to share the same VA really, and he did a phenomenal job at making Siegbert sound adorable and awkward. Fitting for a character who is trying his hardest to to live up to the reputation of his father. Which, interestingly enough, is what Xander was like back when he was younger I believe.

I also love his performances as Kilma, Sumeragi, Hank, and the Rainbow Sage!

I honestly would not have known he voiced other roles in Fire Emblem Fates until I checked the credits here. It's very impressive how well he can differentiate his tone and voice between all his roles in that one game. Xander is my favourite role by far though

Easily my standout actor of Fates, Xander in particular sounds perfect with his kingly tone and awesome battle cries.

@MikominMM "No one beats me!" His delivery of that line is fantastic IMO!

Just in general the man's acting is pretty great

I said this somewhere before I think, but GOD is this guy a great VA!

I mean. Xander, Shura, Kaze, Kilma, Sumeragi AND the Rainbow Sage are all played by the same man? Now that's talent right there!

@HylianBelmont I couldn't agree more. He is a perfect cast.

@Charaito It's a bit of a shame that he, along with some of the other VAs in Fates (or at least the ones who don't really do anime) are regarded as "terrible" because that clearly isn't the case.

@HylianBelmont What, seriously? That doesn't make any sense to me. At all.

@Charaito I just kinda noticed that the performances that seem to get the most hate are the ones from the voice actors who don't do anime, or don't really do anime very often. I dunno. It might just be me though.

@HylianBelmont @Charaito I'm pretty sure that most people don't actively *dislike* non-anime VA's - that'd be silly, & you'd be alienating 95+% of VA's that way.

There are just some folks (myself included) that are disappointed with the way that dubs & dub VA's are so niche & unprofitable that almost *everybody* ignores them.

* No one who spoke on #PerformanceMatters brought up that anime deserves to pay a lot better. I personally think great shows (much more than games, actually) are heavily enhanced by good VO.

Sure, it's not a *huge* industry, but it inherently warrants deeper investment in VO than games do, because acting makes a show, whereas games are more tied to programming & level design. Does #Performance really not #Matter in this case?

Animation VA's are no exception to anime being niche, & so it's understandable that they aren't super-informed on why the industry is the way it is, & so assume that "it's probably not paid well because the shows aren't great".

* I think Clancy Brown actively dismissed anime one time on Talkin'Toons. & again, it's understandable, but I can see why VA fans, a lot of us who adore VA's, can get disappointed that some VA's can be presumptive (they're human after all), & so many VA's *leave* anime once they hit it big.

On the other side of it, however, a lot of dub VA's go through a ton of crap, & it could be said that *they* get more "terrible" comments than prelay VA's.

But, really, animation VA's make way, way more money anyway. Call it a trade-off, I guess.

@huzaifa_ahmed It's just that. The game is full of plenty of voices that you don't hear in anime/JRPGs. And while I personally think it gives a Non-Union dub like that a really fresh sound, some others however. Like to call people like EG Daily, Cam Clarke and David Stanbra "No-talent VAs" because of that. Which is really disheartening to see in my opinion.
