While he was greatly miscast as Sanji, I actually loved his voice. It's so funny.

It's a shame that he left the industry after his major miscasting as Sanji in the 4Kids dub of One Piece because outside of Sanji he had a lot of other solid performances under his belt.

Mostly notably Xellos in the Slayers series, sure his voice sounded way different than Akira Ishida's rendition but his swarmy, Greg Proops like voice fits a deceitful tricksters rather well, and while Michael Sinterniklaas's rendition sounds more like Ishida and wasn't a bad replacement by any means there's just something charming about Moo's voice for Xellos.

He was also an excellent as Panic in Yu-Gi-Oh!, a very good example of his range and versatility.

I do find it funny that he became a bartender later on in life considering he was Sanji.

As for Sanji, it's a guilty pleasure performance for me. Eric Vale is more fitting and true to the character but Moo's Sanji is a entertaining performance at least even if it really didn't fit in the long run.

@Autovolt I think his casting was good for Sanji, Toei supervised the casting for 4Kids' dub, even if they really let 4Kids loose with everything else about that dub. I would've been eager to see him play Sanji more seriously in an accurate dub by Mike Sinterniklaas.

And years later his Sanji somehow became really accurate to his backstory

@HienFan Clearly 4kids were playing the long game.

His Sanji may not have been the best, but he was great as Panik and other roles.

2 years ago, I interviewed David Moo online when was in the hospital due to chronic asthma. It's in this link if anyone's interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7c4htu39Zlk

And to answer your take, it was the director's idea not Davids and he quit to do his dream job. And sorry for the background. I was hospitalized with a breathing mask in my face and was barely able to keep up.

Glad he's still amongs the living.

that moment when the manga, gives more background on sanji's background, making David Moo's voice seem more authentic, considering he's the son of a mob boss

@MrFuzzyPony If he had toned down the accent then his voice for Sanji would have really worked in hindsight.

Personally I still prefer Eric Vale's take, because I think David Moo's Brooklyn accent was way too strong and silly for the character (that said I'm not against accents, though, I think Joey Wheeler's worked because his seiyu had one, as well as it being toned down/not too thick), but that does help make his take more tolerable for me.

Not a big fan of this guy, either, but I did like his Xellos and Panik voices. Sanji...well, his take got ruined by bad direction, I feel sort of bad for him since he hasn't done much voice work since the infamous 4Kids' One Piece dub.

He said in a really informal interview he's quit major-role acting to focus on mixology. He's gotten minor roles in some live action stuff recently.

Good for him, at least he's doing what makes him happy.

I heard PurpleEyesWTF's version of Sanji !on Code Ment Episode 13 Sounds just like David Moo's Sanji! Feels so weird hearing Eric Vale's Sanji now and not David Moo's Sanji on One Piece anymore. But that's just me.

This guy gets a bad rep due to his poor performances due to inept voice direction. But he's not all bad. His Xellos is ridiculously entertaining!

I cannot stop listening to his Sanji clip. The voice is all wrong for the character, but I'm mesmerized. That's talent.

I remember a quote from this guy's version of Sanji for a preview for One Piece on 4kids that I can still recite to this day.

"I just GOTTA have that fish."

I think it was just a normal fish too, dunno what the big deal about it was but then again I've never really watched One Piece.

This guy was so unfitting for Sanji that he was downright hilarious. Pretty much the definition of "so bad its good" what with his Rocky Balboa new yorker sound.

@Metabad I blame the directors on his bad performance paired with the the likelihood that he was just outright miscast altogether as Sanji. I believe he himself claimed that he disagreed with the direction they took the character in. I feel really bad for him. He's a great voice actor, as seen by his many other roles, but he gets a lot of flak for his Sanji. It's understandable, but that one miscast should not wreck his whole reputation.

@PurpleWarrior13 Yeah, I haven't heard many of his other roles, but I do remember his Panik being pretty good.
said at 4:50 AM on Thu May 31 2012
@PurpleWarrior13 True. But the Sanji VC had guest users and some members that liked his Sanji. So I guess it's not a complete fail. XD

That aside, I do agree that he is a great actor. Especially his Xellos.

I'm not the first to say his Sanji wasn't that great but I do think most of the problem was with the voice direction and 4Kids censoring the show to appeal to young children.

Many VAs in that dub gave less-than-stellar performances who were very good in other shows.

His Panik voice was amusing (a much deeper voice used) and his Xellos voice was fantastic!

Too bad he didn't return for Slayers Revolution and Evolution-R.

Maybe he did want to return but just wasn't invited?

@Jackson_H According to Michael Sinterniklaas's interview with the RightStuf podcast, FUNimation pretty much requested that he take over the role from David. He didn't really give a reason though.
