Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Weevil Underwood with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Yu-Gi-Oh!

Weevil Underwood A.K.A. Insector Haga in the Japanese version of the anime and manga is a recurring rival in the series. He uses an insect type deck. Weevil was once Region Champion of Japan after he defeated Rex Raptor but did poorly at the Duelist Kingdom and Battle City tournaments. Weevil enjoys cheating and using every advantage he can get when dueling.

In the English dub version of the anime by 4Kids Entertainment Weevil was voiced by Jimmy Zoppi.

In the lesser known English dub by Odex Ltd Weevil was voiced by Brian Zimmerman.

James Carter Cathcart may be stuck in Pokemon limbo nowadays but I'll always consider Weevil to be one of his best performances as he really fitted the sneaky, obnoxious and annoying character Weevil is like.

Billy Bob Thompson although a bit bland is still a solid impression nonetheless.

Brian Zimmerman did a Peter Lorre impression far more better than Chuck Powers ever did and it's one of the better voices in the Odex dub but I feel he could have put more energy into it as he sounds bored at times.

As Obnoxious as he could be in the role at several points, I still feel that James Carter Cathcart is the Strongest English Voice for Weevil.

IMO He does the best balance of Comical and Malevolent in the Role.

That being said, Billy Bob Thompson Does a solid emulation of JCC.

I'll give Brian Zimmerman the benefit of the doubt here, I at least think he does a better Peter Lorre impression than Chuck Powers, and I think it fits Weevil a lot more than it would ever fit Yami Bakura. If he had more energy it might actually be a pretty fitting and memorable performance, but alas...

@Metabad That's what I love about alternate English dubs; sometimes they're on par or have potential to be great along with the more well known actor, and most other times they suck hard. :P

I think I'm gonna go with Billy Bob 'Greninja' Thompson, he got better acting than Brian but is also not as over the top as James

1. James Carter Cathcart - He captures Weevil's annoying and sneaky character in a way that no one else can honestly. And listen to the way he says "but I couldn't come up with anything..." in his clip. You can just hear such a sinister side to him come out in that line too. Overall JCC did a great job as Weevil.

2. Billy Bob Thompson - He does a pretty nice impression, although it's a bit bland in comparison? Still a pretty good effort.

3. Brian Zimmerman - It's one of his better voices in the show for what it's worth, but his take just doesn't work for Weevil unfortunately. He just sounds too "bored" in the role for my liking

Billy Bob's Weevil is fine.. it's just that somehow? Weevil being completely annoying sounding is the entire charm of the character, and no one but JCC can capture that.

@Ghosty404 oh yeah, also Brian Zimmerman sounds appropriate.. just really really slow.

He's more energetic in this clip, but it just sounds whiny and annoying, and not in a good way:

It's been a while since I've seen Yu-Gi-Oh so I forgot how enjoyable JCC take is. It is perfectly sinister and has an "insect" sound to it, if that makes sense.

Billy Bob does a fine impression, only real complain I have is the laugh could use some work.

Brian's Peter Lorre esque voice makes sense on paper but I feel needed to be more energetic, just sounds awkward as is.

1. James Carter Cathcart (A)- THE voice of Weevil, even Martin Billany can't catch up to this guy's intriguing delivery. I could listen to the clip all day.

2. Brian Zimmerman (C-)- It's as if Cutman from the Mega Man cartoon show turned into a creep. Seriously, his voice should be arrested for indecent exposure.

@martyyahar "THE voice of Weevil, even Martin Billany can't catch up to this guy's intriguing delivery."

I see five VAs for this character on BTVA alone. Plus this character & show was largely set in motion easily before JCC got on it. 4Kids may have had influence on YGO, yeah, & their version is what I know best, but I couldnt really say JCC is "THE voice" when it's largely entirely detached from the production.

Also, as much as I love Martin Billany & he really does know his stuff, I can't help but feel as if people are giving *way* too much credit to abridgers simply because they aren't foreign artists (ergo, how many people know the director behind Bayformers or Spongebob vs the director behind Dragon Ball or Pokemon anime - when both are just as influential) . IMO, it's at least a bit unfair.

I actually find JCC to be very annoying as Weevil in hindsight: it's screechy, raspy and just all around extremely forced to me, IMO (I voted for him because of the two, I find his the lesser evil, but in no way do I think it's an "A" level performance, more like a "C" for me). Brian Zimmerman's Igor like take manages to be even more ill fitting, though, I don't like either of these performances- a rare case where both 4Kids & Odex misfired entirely on a character, IMO.

Billy Bob Thompson's take on Weevil in Duel Links is like a clearer, less screechy, less raspy & less forced JCC like take, so like I said, I'd change votes to him if he's added in the future (doubtful). But if anyone is "THE voice" of Weevil/Haga to me, it's Urara Takano, not JCC.

@huzaifa_ahmed It's because JCC did a very great job at bringing Weevil's personality to life despite those factors. Because he's a great VA who pretty much excels at playing smug rivals and villains. That's why Martyyahar said that I'd imagine.

As for Martin Billany... I really like his work as well, but it does kinda irritate me that some fans insult the work of the official VAs just because they aren't the "LOL Abridged" voices. I feel it's kind of uncalled for IMO.

To be fair, JCC's acting is good as Weevil, but the voice is what I find grating to listen to at times (although I think it's one of his better roles in his career). I still preferred it to what Brian Zimmerman ended up going with, though.

On the other subject, Martin Billany aka LK, his Weevil & Rex takes are pretty much Beavis & Butthead parody like vocal renditions for intentional humor, but I can't even begin to express how inappropriate it is to compare his Abridged parody voices to the actual English dub VAs here, so I agree with that. Even LK had this to say recently on the subject:

@WrightWay Weevil and Rex stopped doing the Beavis and Butthead but recently, though..

@huzaifa_ahmed "I can't help but feel as if people give the abridged *way* too much credit".

I agree with this. They disregard the original actors because they aren't as good as the abridged voices in their mind.

It's fine to be a fan, but disregarding the original voice cast is kinda rude. The abridgers take several issues with this & have expressed these issues several times over social media.
said at 11:02 AM on Fri Apr 28 2017
I wouldn't know because I haven't kept up with Martin's Yu-Gi-Oh TAS parody or his friends' parody of Dragonball via TFS in a while, but that's cool, although that wasn't really my point.

@Shaun Ince
Yup, and also true for TFS- they're supposed to be for intentional comedic purposes and entertainment. KaiserNeko in the Dragonball fandom also frowned on some Abridged fans disregarding the Ocean/FUNi dub casts for the Series.

@WrightWay Yeah, he talked about it on Kazenshuu a few years back. Nothing he can do about it, especially considering they are continuously growing at a large rate. Some fans of TeamFourStar are disrespectful to the point where they tag both the voice actor & abridged actor and tell the voice actor that they suck, and the abridged actor is better than them. Whether it's unintentional or not, that's a terrible thing to do.

1. Billy Bob Thompson(not featured here, he's the current voice of Weevil in Duel Links)
He does a good impression of Cathcart, but he is waaayyyy less annoying and still manages to sound very smug.

2. James Carter Cathcart
It fits the character's smug and sneaky personality, but I find the performance rather annoying sometimes. Also, I can't be the only one who thinks that his current voice for Meowth sounds like Weevil with a Brooklyn accent right?

3. Brian Zimmerman
Somehow he managed to make Weevil more annoying with his take. He sounds a lot more nasally than Cathcart/Thompson and somehow he ends up sounding like a bad Stitch (from Lilo and Stitch) impression.

If he gets added to the poll, I'll be changing my vote to Billy Bob Thompson because I heard clips of his take, and it's way less grating than JCC's take is for me, too- Weevil's dub voice is one of the few that actually bothered me in the old 4Kids dub (not that I like the choice Odex's dub made here, either).

On another note, Mako Tsunami (Ryota Kajiki) got a new dub voice in the Duel Links/Terminal game since Andrew Rannells moved on to make his career in live acting/theater, and Daniel J. Edwards does the role now. In that case, however, I prefer Andrew's take, but just an interesting situation.

I've never really cared for either of Weevil's English voices, to be honest, but James at least sounds a lot more villainous and sneaky, which fits more with what Weevil is.

Brian sounds like an impression of a vampire or something, which is okay enough for a villain I suppose, but I never really imagined Weevil sounding like that at all.

James's voice was very fitting for Weevil. It's probably one of my favourite performances from him.

Brian is fairly decent as well but I don't think he was quite as fitting as James Carter Cathcart was.

James: He has proven himself to be one of the lesser actors within 4Kids' roster, but I'll give him credit where it's due.

Brian sounds like a less enthusiastic version of James. No way I could get behind that.

James Carter Cathcart as grating as his voice could get for Weevil....it was perfect for the character in every way.

Brian Zimmerman's Peter Lorre esque voice doesn't quite fit this annoying bug nerd well.

Cathcart gets my vote.

Brian Zimmerman- Creepy, but not quite in a way that matches the character.

I actually like his Japanese voice best, but I think James Carter Cathcart does a really great job as well. I'm not that crazy about Brian's take, but part of that may be the voice direction. I think a lot of the voices in the Odex dub wouldn't been so bad if they actually proper voice direction.

Ah, Weevil Underwood. The only character which James Carter Cathcart actually does well as to me(His Meowth is too scratchy, his James is too whiny and both are off in pitch). Why? Because Weevil is the kind of character you'd imagine having a high-pitched and scratchy voice, and that's just what Jimmy "Alan Smithee" Zoppi delivers. Brian Zimmerman is basically like a higher-pitched Ren Hoek to me.

#1: James C. Cathcart.
#2: Brain Zimmerman.

James sounds like a cross between Imperfect Cell and Cobra Commander. It's just hysterical.

Brian sounds like a bad Peter Lorre impression. Also very amusing.

I'm going with James. His voice is more fitting.

James Carter Cathcart (aka Jimmy Zoppi) really got the "I'm an a*****" feeling of Weevil down really well. He really got the creepy nerdy feeling of how Weevil (aka Insector Haga) is a real jerk.

Brian Zimmerman sounds like Igor. I don't like his voice that much for Weevil, mainly because he's a tad too creepy in the role.
said at 2:42 PM on Tue Oct 1 2013
@OldSchoolFTW I disagree. Weevil's supposed to be a creepy, slimy bug nerd, and Brian's voice fits that image. I don't hate Zoppi's take, but it annoys me 'cause it could have been so much better. In the original dub of the moment where the clip comes from, Weevil talks about how he couldn't think of any way to beat the Exodia cards..."until just this moment." When he delivers that line, he sounds PERFECT. Why couldn't he have kept that up rather than use the snarly, screechy voice he did?

it's funny how Jimmy Zoppi always sounds the same. He sounds just the same as his Meowth but still much better than Brian here

I...actually think Brian Zimmerman sounds better. Jimmy Zoppi could've done better but was a little TOO obnoxious in the part. Brian sounds more like an evil nerd, which is what Weevil is.
