Tristan Taylor

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Tristan Taylor with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Yu-Gi-Oh!

In the 4Kids English anime dub his Americanized name is Tristan Taylor but in the manga and original Japanese anime his name is Hiroto Honda. One of the supporting characters of the Yu-Gi-Oh! and a friend to Yugi, Joey and Tea. He was originally a bully who picked on Yugi with Joey before they eventually became best friends.

He was originally voiced by Sam Reigel from episodes 1 to 10, and he was later voiced for the rest of the series by Greg Abbey.

In the rare English dub version by Odex Ltd, Tristan was voiced by Brian Zimmerman.

Greg Abbey's down-to-Earth voice fits pretty well and he also does his comedic moments well too.

Brian Zimmerman is probably the best of the Odex voices though he lacks the charm of Greg Abbey's take.

Sam Riegel is just too cartoonishly goofy to take seriously at all, it was probably for the best that Greg took over quickly afterwards.

Greg Abbey feels the Most Steadfast and Dependable in the Role, while also nailing Tristan's More Comedic Moments (especially when Tristan is Trapped in a Monkey Robot).

While he sounds a little too neurotic in the role, Brian Zimmerman isn't half bad. If he had been given better Voice Direction, he would be Spot on in the part.

Sam Riegel sounds Buffoonish in an Obnoxious way, which is a pity, since the casting is good but the voice does not match the Character.

1. Greg Abbey
Perfect. He sounds very down-to-earth and his voice is a perfect contrast to Wayne Grayson's Joey.
2. Brian Zimmerman
The most decent of the Odex voices. While he lacks the charm of Greg Abbey, he's still pretty tolerable.
3. Sam Riegel
I can't take Tristan seriously with Sam's voice. Sure, if he sounded more like Phoenix Wright, I wouldn't mind but he sounds way too over-the-top and most importantly, Tristan is not supposed to be stupid.

I just got to the episode where Greg takes over for Sam...boy what a breath of fresh air.

I can actually take Tristan seriously. XD

Not blaming Sam or anything, and he still managed to emote pretty well, but it was such a weird voice.

Greg Abbey had a pretty nice "Down to earth" for Tristan. He's a good fit for the character even if I don't really care for him that much.

Brian Zimmerman is kind of decent here. Don't really have much to say on his performance aside from that really.

And then we have Sam......oh boy. I mean he's a GREAT VA and if he used something close to his Phoenix/Stahl voice he'd be just as good as Greg is in the role. But the voice he was directed to use was just so damn unfitting for the character XD

Still it's pretty fun to listen to. So I guess you can't hate on it too much at the end of the day!

Honestly, rewatching the show, Sam didn't really bother me. He was still pretty funny, although the voice was still too surfer dude-esque and unfitting.
said at 2:04 PM on Mon Oct 17 2016
I really don't mind either, since Sam only voiced him for the first 10 episodes before Greg took over for the other 234, and Greg Abbey got to re-dub 9 of the 10 Sam did anyway in the Uncut dub.

@GreenGoblin75 I mean it's a really funny voice definitely! Just not the right one for the character.

" Greg Abbey got to re-dub 9 of the 10 Sam did anyway in the Uncut dub"

Thanks for the info. I was planning on watching Yugioh someday, so I'll be sure to keep this in mind. Knowing that means that I only have to listen to one episode of Tristan's voice not sounding right, which is great.

Greg Abbey sounds the most like the Japanese voice for him: just an everyday kind, friendly teenager.

Brian Zimmerman surprisingly isn't bad at all, but he does sound a bit less energetic.

Sam Riegel is just too nasally and goofy for me to vote for here: hilarious, for the wrong reasons.

I'm going to assume the directors had something to do with Sam's delivery on this.

Greg manages to do the character right.

Brian's ok, but his voice doesn't capture the character by too much.

Greg Abbey gets my vote.
Though I think Sam Riegel would've done better using something similar to his Donatello Voice. I'm guessing this was the director's fault similar to what happened with David Moo as Sanji.

Greg Abbey is by far the most fitting voice for Tristan, he sounds like a cool supporting friend.

Brian Zimmerman is also rather fitting as Tristan but doesn't quite do it the same way that Greg nailed it.

Sam Riegel we all know could have done this role so much better. His natural voice would have been just right, but this weird goofy voice he used never worked at all for the role. It's not hard to see why they recast only a few episodes in to the series but at the same time it makes me wonder why he was cast in the first place especially with this kind of voice?

Greg Abbey wins this one.

Greg Abbey, definitely, sounded most fitting for the character's personality and nature.

Brian Zimmerman is okay, but sounds a little high pitched.

Sam Riegel sounds pretty nasally and goofy here, so it was for the best Greg Abbey took over.

Greg Abbey hands down, followed by Brian Zimmerman strangely enough. I love Sam Riegel, but he was a much better Rex than he was Tristan. That voice he was directed to use was just ridiculous, lol.

So that's where the Barney the Dinosaur voice came from!! I wonder what was on the director's mind when he had Sam Riegal do......THAT!!! Overall, Greg is the one I'm most familiar with, so I vote for him!! Brian wasn't too bad either, surprising given that most of his other performances were....lacking.
said at 11:06 PM on Thu Dec 24 2015
@DravenRoth994 Sam's take is not exactly Barney-like, comparing it to LK's, he sounds rather nasily and goofy toned which doesn't even match well with the character at all.

Which for me is a wasted opportunity since he's great at voicing teen characters like him so i honestly expected him to have a normal teen voice that he should've followed along, but hey.

Brian Zimmerman's voice sounds alright, but the acting's not really the best. Greg Abbey's voice sounds good too, but Sam Riegel's makes me think of Tristan's voice from Yugioh The Abridged Series. I mean, he sounds so whiny. XD
said at 11:36 AM on Sat Jun 28 2014
@YakkoBaby Well Sam Riegel's is the voice that Tristan's abridged voice is based on. LK even did a joke about when Greg Abbey took over by switching the voice he used, but then in the next episode he went back to doing the first voice because it was easier to make fun of :).

Frank Frankson was excellent as Tristan Taylor (or as I like to call him, Hirota Honda). The minute he replaced Sam Riegel in this role is the minute I began to take Tristan seriously.

Brian Zimmerman is good, too, but he sounds strained here and forced.

Sam Riegel is just...he's a great voice actor, IMO, but Tristan was just not the role for him. He sounds way too goofy and silly in the role.

Sam Riegel is clearly the worst voice here, yet I gave my vote to him just because it inspired the Abridged Tristan.

@Zylphia Because Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged is both a parody and IMO extremely overrated. It relies way too much on forced running gags.

Frank has my vote, but really, how can anyone look down on Sam if they're so in love with YGOTAS? If it weren't for Sam's ridiculous Barney-like voice, there probably wouldn't be any "My voice gives me super strength" jokes.

I don't know what anyone's saying, but Sam was pretty good as Tristan for me. Yet Frank was a lot better and seemed to improve Tristan more. And you know what just got me? The guy who did Tristan's voice in the Abridged Series sounds much like Riegel's performance.

Sam Riegel wasn't really a miscast imo since I feel he could have been a decent Honda/Tristan, but yeah the voice he chose didn't work really well way too goofy and high picthed. Frank was great though glad he played Tristan for the majority of duel monsters

Greg Abbey (AKA Frank Frankson) mentioned at a panel a few weekends ago that 4kids didn't like Sam Regal's performance as Tristan, so he got recast. This happened when Greg moved back to NYC after being in LA for a while. He was originally gonna voice Yugi.

But Riegel still voiced Rex Raptor for Duelist Kindgom and Battle City. Plus he also voiced Donatello for TMNT.

I suppose we could always ask him on facebook. Chances are he'll either laugh and give the reason for his replacement or he'll ignore the message from embarrasment.

Heh this will be too short for me to actually bother putting it in the description. Sam is not a bad VA in general but his work as Tristan was his worst performance ever. (Kind of sad really since he could've done better.) But Frank was alright though, at least he was fairly fitting for the role.
