Franchise: Yu-Gi-Oh!

Joey Wheeler or A.K.A. Katsuya Jonouchi in the manga and Japanese version of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime is a friend to Yugi, Tristan and Tea.

Joey was originally a bully who picked on Yugi with Tristan Taylor but soon they became his best friends. Joey is an enthusiastic duelist who learned Duel Monsters from Yugi and his grandpa. He cares deeply for his sister Serenity and his reason for dueling is to help the people you love.

Joey is often used for comic relief but is still an essential character. Over the course of the series Joey becomes a better person and a more experienced duelist. He is often mocked for being an amateur despite his accomplishments, and he has the unfortunate luck of dueling people who try to cheat. Joey's favorite Duel Monsters card is Red-Eyes Black Dragon.

In the English dub version of the anime by 4Kids Entertainment, Joey Wheeler was voiced by Wayne Grayson.

In a lesser known English dub by Odex Ltd Joey Wheeler was voiced by Dwayne Tan.

Wayne Grayson truly is the Lovable Underdog "GODFADDA A' GAMES".....

Dwayne Tan sounds like a better fit for Renton Thurston IMO....

Wayne Grayson/ Vinnie Penna easily earns my Vote.

1. Wayne Grayson
Say what you want about the Brooklyn accent, but I think it's a perfect translation of Joey's rough speech patterns in the Japanese version. Either way, Wayne Grayson nails Joey's energetic and hotheaded personality very well and the accent got better over time.
2. Dwayne Tan
Personally I think he sounds too meek and bland. Don't get me wrong, I have seen Dwayne Tan in theatre and he's not too bad of an actor, but Joey is simply not suited for him.

Wayne Grayson did a great job at making Joey sound like a pretty likable individual. Plus the accent he used added a lot of character to his performance I felt.

Dwayne Tan was okay, but nothing spectacular really.

Wayne Grayson gives Joey a lot of character and energy in his performance, and his Brooklyn accent really does suit the character's more rowdy ad hot blooded nature pretty well.

Dwayne Tan sounds too young and pretty bland in comparison.

Wayne Grayson fits Joey Wheeler to a tee. As it's been mentioned before below that Joey had an Osakan accent in the Japanese version which could more or less be translated as an New York accent so this is an example of 4Kids's localization that actually made sense. Yeah maybe it's a little over done but I don't care Wayne still got Joey's attitude down nicely being headstrong, hot blooded and a bit goofy but still brings a lot of passion to the role and is over-all a great supporting friend and a solid duelist in his own right, even if he'll never get the respect he deserves.

Dwayne Tan is way too young and wimpy as Joey, plus he sounds way too quiet in the clip provided here.

Wayne Grayson is definitely the winner and he's got my vote.

Wayne is a lot better, actually, been watching the Japanese Version and even his seiyu has an Osakan accent like Galactic_Cyrus said. Dwayne doesn't sound anything like his seiyu:

Wayne Grayson- Excellent: I actually thought the Brooklyn accent added to his take on the character, and he had a pretty good rowdy teenager voice.

Dwayne Tan- Not bad, but comes off as a bit too high pitched and like he's getting ready to hit puberty.

Wayne Grayson's Brooklyn accent might have gotten a LITTLE bit overdone, but he's still better than the generic Dwayne Tan.

Definitely Grayson. I personally think his voice and accent makes the character more memorable. Tan's voice isn't BAD per-say, but I do find the voice and delivery boring, and the character isn't nearly as memorable as a result.

Wayne Grayson is classic in this role. The Brooklyn accent is actually what 4Kids basically used to translate his honorifics into English. It works pretty well for the character, all things considered. He's supposed to have street language in a way so I can sort of see how they figured the accent out, and it does actually work in Joey's case to me.

Tan is actually decent, but like you said he's a tad bland and generic in the role, but he's still alright in the role.

Wayne Grayson. Dwayne Tan is okay but bland and forgettable.

Fun fact: Joey's SUPPOSED to have an accent. Even in the Japanese version, he talked with an Osakan accent, which was easily translatable as a Brooklyn accent in the US.

@Galactic_Cyrus Yeah I get annoyed when people complain about accents. A voice should be judged on its performance and tone not its accent. You might as well complain about the characters having American accents in the dub or Japanese accents in the original since a Japanese or American accent is just as much of an accent as a Brooklyn accent.

@Galactic_Cyrus It's the same story with Sailor Moon's Molly/Naru. A lot of fans moan about her Brooklyn accent yet she has a heavy Osaka accent in the original despite her seiyuu was from Tokyo. Personally, I don't have a problem with such accents and will vote for Wayne Grayson.
said at 2:51 PM on Tue Oct 1 2013
@Fulgore2005 I think the problem with Molly/Naru was that her accent was very cartoonishly exaggerated. If she had a more natural accent, she'd sound perfect. Joey's accent went over-the-top sometimes but was mostly very appropriate and added to the vocal performance rather than detracting.

I love the accent! Whats wrong with him having a Brooklyn accent? I think it fits his character and he sounds great!

@AshytaFang It also adds a bit more character to Joey, and people's perspective of him.

Wayne easily gets my vote, though Dwayne Tan wasn't bad either.
