EDITOR'S OPINIONAlright folks here is the first VC for a male Ys Character that's one of the good guys namely Dogi a big muscular manly thief whom met Adol in the first Ys game by breaking Adol out of his imprisonment and has been good buddies with him ever since. And while he did appear in Ys Book I & II but he wasn't voiced (and was oddly called Colin in that version) so his English voice acting debut is in the 3rd Ys game namely Wanderers from Ys. Now some of you might recall the SNES and Sega Genesis version of that game but there was a TurboGrafx CD version of this title which had voice acting like its predecessor but had considerably different voice talent. While TGCD version of Ys Book I & II had known NA animation VA talent but the TGCD version of the 3rd game had English speaking VA talent in Japan and like many games with that type of Voice talent (Mega Man 8, Original Version of Resident Evil and Castlevania Symphony of the Night, etc.) the voice work is not considered to be all that good to put it extremely mildly. However while even I will agree that there were performances in that game that weren't all that good I admit I find this to be an exception namely Dogi whom was voiced by Michael Naishtut. While its not perfect Michael's Dogi voice does have a fairly nice friendly easy going feel and while the voice isn't all that low its not too high either. Overall its one of the better performances in that version of the game which of course is not saying much.
In the English Dub of the Ys anime that was released about a little over a decade after the games were Dogi was voiced by Michael Sorich. I admit I was slightly surprised about this casting choice but Michael Sorich was able to make it work and well due to how Dogi's role in the anime is a bit different from the games does kind of help make it work a bit more. But still Michael Sorich also delivered a pretty good friendly easy going guy that does sound a little goofy but not too much. While its not one of the best performances I have heard for this show and the like but it is a pretty good one and it is a somewhat interesting change of pace for Michael Sorich's handiwork.
And last but not least in the 6th Ys game The Ark of Naphistim, Hudson's parent company Konami surprisingly used Ocean Studios for the voice work in that game and Dogi was voiced by Trevor Devall. And Trevor is a pretty good choice for the role as he too does a pretty good voice and performance for Adol's muscular good buddy. But I dunno maybe its just me but I think I would picture Scott McNeil a bit more in this role (yeah I know perhaps I am being just a bit biased) but while Trevor wouldn't be my first choice for the role in this regard he was a decent choice though. So to make a long story short its not one of Trevor's best performances but its by no means a bad one though. Overall I liked them all but while none of them are perfect for the role I suppose I would go with Michael Sorich a bit more here.
(Update: In the PSP remake of the 3rd Ys game Patrick Seitz takes over the role here and he is a very good choice here as his voice and performance in the game has a great brawny and cheerful tone to it which is very fitting for the role. While I still enjoyed the other 3 performances here I suppose I will actually go with Patrick Seitz the most here.)
