EDITOR'S OPINIONToday we begin the Xenosaga VC section and I figured who better to start things off than none other than SHION UZUKI! In the original (and third) Xenosaga game Shion was voiced by Lia Sargent whom I must say was a perfectly natural casting choice for this role here. While Lia is known for doing cute voices well before and this is no exception but her voice and performance for the role is a great mix of cute and intellectual. Lia's performance for the role did sound calm, intellectual and yet endearingly sweet as well. Lia's work as Shion is a fine example of her work and one of the better performances in the game series.
In the 2nd Xenosaga game Olivia Hack did get to take over the role here and while her work is not as good as Lia's it certainly wasn't bad though. The quality of Olivia's is somewhat inconsistent as her performance in certain scenes was very good in some scenes but is pretty okay in others though. Olivia's voice work for the role does pretty well with sounding cute but as for intellectual well her work as Shion sounds a bit more "normal" than anything else. Now don't get me wrong I am not saying that Olivia makes Shion sound stupid but still however to be fair I did like on how Olivia was able to do a dramatic performance well in some of Shion's mroe serious scenes. So in other words while Olivia's work on the role is pretty good especially by its own merits but its not one of the better performances in the game series.
In ADV's dub of the Xenosaga anime (now distributed by FUNimation) Stephanie Wittels gets to take over the role here. Stephanie's voice and performance for the role is pretty good when it comes to how cute Shion is but Stephanie did a very good job playing up how intellectual Shion is. Seriously while Stephanie's voice for the role is pretty good her performance definitely suited Shion's friendly and intellectual persona very well and is a pretty good example of the voice work in the English dub of the Anime. Overall I am clearly going with Lia Sargent first, Stephanie Wittels at a close second and Olivia Hack at an okay third.
