X-Men X-Men

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Mastermind with sound clips and images.
Franchise: X-Men

Mastermind is one of the various foes of the X-Men whom was formerly a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and The Inner Circle as he made his comic book debut in X Men Volume 1 #4 back in March of 1964. Mastermind is A.K.A Jason Wyngarde and his mutant ability is to generate illusions that only his victims can see and can manipulate his victims memories. Mastermind was originally introduced as a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (and there is barely any info about him before he went into the life of a Super Villain) however he is most known as a member of the Inner Circle but he has worked for others such as Factor Three and Secret Empire. Jason Wyngarde has two daughters named Martinque Jason and Regan wyngarde (whom have shared the same code name as their father).

Today on the X-Men VC section we take a look at the original... MASTERMIND! We will begin with the 90's X men series in which Mastermind appeared for a couple of episodes voiced by Nigel Bennett. Nigel's voice for the role was pretty good as it goes pretty well with his rater impressive performance for the role. Nigel's performance does suit Mastermind's manipulative persona rather well as he can go from distinguished gentleman to a somewhat temperamental sore loser rather well so in other words Nigel's work as Mastermind is a good example of the voice work in that show.

In X-Men Evolution Mastermind was given a rather different appearance and appeared for a couple of episodes voiced by Campbell Lane. While Mastermind was given a somewhat more beastly appearance in that show Campbell's fairly rough voice for the role did suit Mastermind's distinguished nature fairly well.  While Mastermind was still one of the bad guys in X-Men Evolution his depiction in the show was one of the more sympathetic depictions of him (well sort of rather than being a smooth manipulator he is more of a bullied lackey of Magneto) but still Campbell's performance did suit the show's depiction of him. While Campbell's performance as Mastermind is an above average example of the voice work in the show but it is a good example of Campbell's voice work nevertheless.

Last but most definitely not the least is Travis Willingham in the English dub of the X-Men Anime. I must say that Travis did a rather smashing job playing Mastermind as the regal-styled manipulator that he is. Travis' voice for the role was very suiting for the role (and he does for the most part do his Relius Clover voice from BlazBlue) and of course I can say the same for his performance as it does have a smooth and debonair feel which is very suitable for the role. Travis' work as Mastermind is one of the better performances in the show and is a fine example of Travis' voice work. Overall all of these guys did very well for the role in their own way so I am not entirely sure who to go with here.

@GreenGoblin75 Absolutely. He was a Highlight in the dub of the X Men Anime.

It's a pity Willingham's voice is being wasted on an moronic version of Thor in 'Avengers Assemble'.

For a villain called Mastermind, I think Travis Willingham captures that nicely.

Travis Willingham sounds so regal, so elegant, so classy, so smooth, so smashing and so manipulative It's definitely one of his more underrated performances. He definitely sounds like a mastermind with that air of superiority he's breathing in and I find it really uncanny how much at times he sounds like his FMAB co-star J. Michael Tatum. He also was really funny in the Lego Marvel Super Heroes game when he reprise the role.

Nigel Bennett sounds a bit lighter than I would have expected but he does sound classy and sounds very trusting which just makes his manipulations all the more effective.

Campbell Lane has an awesome aged sounding voice though he sounds way too rough and not really anything like a manipulative Mastermind, it's a great performance but not one that really does the character that well.

Overall Travis Willingham is my favourite and he gets my vote.

BONUS: I could totally see David Kaye, Jeff Bennett, J. Michael Tatum or Dan Green being great as Mastermind.

I'm gonna go with Travis Willingham for Mastermind, though Campbell Lane was also good in the role.
