Colossus

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Colossus with sound clips and images.
Franchise: X-Men

So my second favorite X-Man after Nightcrawler is the mountainous steel giant with a heart of gold, Colossus. Upon looking at him for the first time, you might expect his character to be the typical dumb muscle, but no. Here is one of the most compassionate X-Men characters who cares not only about his family and friends, but also his country.

EDITOR'S OPINION

In the Fox 90's series, we only got 2 episodes with Colossus. The first one he was introduced as an innocent foreigner. Rick Bennett played him with naivity but also with awareness.

Robert Cait took over the role in the ep where Omega Red was trying to take over Russia. His voice was pretty similar to Bennett's, and with the chance to give some real depth to Colossus' patriotism, I feel the strength and acting of the voice did not do the character justice.

Also, in both cases the voice was not powerful and deep enough, even though it worked well in the first episode.

This was certainly not the case with Michael Adamthwaite's portrayal of Colossus. To me, he was dead on with the voice. The accent and braverity was spot on and he put a lot of emotion into what little lines he had. You could tell the whole way through that he was frustrated at having to work for Magneto out of black mail.

The rest of the voices, I really haven't listened to enough dialogue to make an analysis. All sound more or less like similar Russian accents. Adamthwaite's stands out above the rest by far. What I did find a waste was the American accent given to Colossus in X-Men: The Official Game. While I understand in the movie Daniel Cudmore had no accent, I thought the game wasted a great opportunity to stay true to the Russian giant.

In terms of actual character, Piotr Rasputin - AKA, Colossus - has always stood out as one of my favourite X-Men characters in the comics for his sincerity and kindheartedness; the gentlest of Gentle Giants. Sadly, however, his character has often felt, in other media, overlooked and/or underused in terms of capturing what makes him such a great character... until now.

1. Stefan Kapicic - To say he captured every aspect of Colossus would be an understatement. To me, he was never playing a character; he WAS Colossus. His voice had the right depth of tone, the powerful presence of a respectable hero, a nigh-flawless accent, and earnest sincerity with every line, particularly the speech I am SO GLAD was used as his clip. Thanks BTVA admins! To me, Stefan Kapicic IS the definitive voice of Colossus, and perfectly matches everything I envisioned from him as a child.

2. Dan Green - Surprise, surprise, my favourite NY actor proves his mettle (heheh) once more. While his Colossus does come off as more sombre and soft-spoken, without many an opportunity for the prouder and louder moments, similarly to Stefan, the performance just felt so earnest and the voice itself is near perfect in depth, afflictions and accent.

3. Michael Adamthwaite - Another performance from Evolution that, to me, aged well. His voice has a great baritone to it and the accent, once again, is pulled off well; not to mention he does have his moments of showing glimmers of the heroic aspects of Colossus, through his characterisation as a reluctant villain. What holds him back is I wish he had gotten an episode of more focus for Michael to sink his teeth into. However, a fantastic performance all-in-all just the same.

4. Chris Cox - Perhaps lighter than I would have initially expected but, all the same, the accent and likeability of the character are captured excellently. Chris Cox surprised me a lot with this role and while not as deep as I would have liked it DEFINITELY ranks up there.

5. Jim Ward/Earl Boen - To me, the thing that holds both performances back is that they sounds too old for Colossus to me. The accents and actual delivery are fine, and Earl Boen's voice especially has a great tone to it in terms of depth, but the age shows through and holds it back for me.

6. Nolan North - A lack of material holds him back on this one for me, but it definitely sounds okay from what little we have. Maybe a touch light, but it shows promise. Definitely shows promise.

The others,, I am not too sure how to feel about. Some sound too light (Christopher Corey Smith), Tom Kenny fits well for his version but definitely would not match a more accurate portrayal of Colossus, I can barely hear Phil LaMarr's clip to properly assess it, and some of the older VAs (Dan Glivezan) sound okay, but are also a little off to me.

My least favourite, however, is definitely Brad Abrell... the lack of the accent just... I feel that taking away the accent takes away a quintessential layer. It just sounds like your average Joe, not Piotr Rasputin.

CASTING COUCH: Without an absolute shadow of a doubt in my mind, Rick D. Wasserman should play Colossus in the future. A blend between his voice as Nicholai Ginovaef and Thor Odisnon - with the accent and depth of Nicholai, but the warmth and kindness of Thor - would be an incredible combination with which to portray Colossus; easily having the potential, to me at least, to rival Dan and Michael at least.

VC thoughts update

Dan Gilvezan is so charming and friendly as Colossus. He works so well in the role, and his accent is great. I wish he reprised the role someday.

Stefan Kapicic is also pretty awesome. He sounds kind, compassionate and friendly, yet he manages to be pretty hilarious.

John Stephenson didn't have a lot to work with as Colossus as he did with Thunderbird, but I really like him despite the lack of material. He even has a slight accent, most noticeable when he said his last line (That tickled!!!)

Chris Cox is also quite amazing. He kinda reminds me of Gilvezan a little bit. I wish he reprised the role someday.

Robert Cait is also quite good. I really like how he makes Colossus sound like someone with a lot of determination.

I also enjoyed the others, too. I mean, seriously, all of these guys do a fantastic job as Colossus.

Colossus is one of those characters I feel they've never really utilized that well which is a shame since a big burly Russian with the ability to make his skin turn to steel is a neat concept.

Anyways I honestly like Michael Adamthwaite best since the pitch of voice he uses strikes a nice balance of being big and powerful but also sounding relatively youthful and even though Colossus was (an unwilling) member of Magneto's Acolytes he totally can sound heroic. It's a shame we didn't get a solo episode with Colossus like what they did with Gambit but still I like Michael's voice best. What's incredible is that Michael was in his early twenties when he was first cast as Colossus, seriously he just continues to get better and better every new role he takes on.

Jim Ward would have to be my second favourite as while he does sound notably older than Michael. I absolutely love the voice, the accent, pitch and performance he did for Colossus. he was just so entertaining in the unfortunate predicament he got himself into and it really got to show off the range and versatility that Jim Ward is capable of.

Dan Green is really good too, he has a really deep voice and a great accent but i feel he's a bit too solemn sounding to be my favourite voice.

Chris Cox is a pretty great fit for Colossus too. Seriously Chris is just one of those VA's who just continues to impress me.

Rick Bennett is pretty impressive with his take, I'm amazed the guy who also did Juggernaut is capable of sounding very youthful and naive, he's good though he sorta leans towards Yakov Smirnoff territory for my liking. Robert Cait is decent though all I hear with his take is a Russian Wayne Grayson.

Earl Boen has a lot of power, deepness and a great strong Russian accent, the only downside is that he sounds maybe a bit too old for Colossus but otherwise he's excellent.

Dan Gilvezan actually is pretty impressive and I like the out of the box idea of him in the role, his accent is solid and it's cool to hear him in a deeper voice.

Christopher Corey Smith sounds a bit too light for Colossus but still works well.

Tom Kenny works for the SHSS version where he's a transfer student, it's a bit too goofy and I can't see him working as a traditional Colossus.

Nolan North is decent but nothing special. I'm still amazed for the longest time we all believed it was Phil Morris who did Colossus.

Andre Sogullizo's voice just sounds off to me as Colossus. I don't know why it just does?

I can't really hear Phil LaMarr in the clip he has, though I know he could be a better fit with better direction.

Tim Russ sounds way too rough for Colossus.

George Buza works for a fitting game though he could have worked also as the character in the cartoon.

John Stephenson is OK but nothing that special, under better direction he could have worked well.

Brad Abrell is definitely my least favourite, the problem is that he has no accent. I know he's voice matching Daniel Crudmore from the live-action movies but without that accent he just sounds generic and forgettable. He just sounds like an ordinary guy and not Colossus. They missed a good opportunity to give Colossus an accent. At least in the Deadpool movie, we have a new actor in the role and he will be doing the accent which is fantastic news.

I'm going with Michael Adamthwaite on this one.

BONUS: I could totally see Patrick Seitz, Rick D. Wasserman, Crispin Freeman, Marc Diraison or Rob Mungle being great fits for Colossus.

After seeing Deadpool yesterday I have to say Stefan Kapicic did an excellent job voicing Colossus.

His voice is literally a perfect mix between Michael Adamthwaite and Nolan North's takes on Colossus except better. I just love how earnest his portrayal and performance is and the accent is just fantastic.

I might actually switch my vote to him when he's finally added on here.
