My Top 5 Favourite Soundwave Voices

5. Robert Belgrade
4. Gary Chalk
3. Peter Jessop
2. Jeff Bennett/Isaac C. Singleton
1. Frank Welker

Future VA Suggestions:

James Marsters would be really Intimidating as Soundwave if he had a Modulation effect put on his Lex Luthor voice.

If the right effects were added to his Syn Shenron voice, Bob Carter would also be Great in the role.

I also recommend Mark Hamill, Earl Boen, Scottie Ray and Louis Mellis.

VC thoughts update

I really like Frank Welker's take the most. Both his filtered take and his unfiltered evil Barry White voice work perfectly for the character. I prefer him with the effects, but he still sounds good without the vocoder.

Isaac C. Singleton, Jr. also works well in the role. Although unlike Frank, I prefer Isaac's voice without the vocoder (as it was in the DOTM game) 'cause it reminded me of Bill Martin's Umbra from Mighty Orbots. He's pretty solid.

Peter Jessop's clip has many of his lines playing at the same time, hence why he sounds kinda unintelligible, but when you play the game, you can hear him more clearly. It's kind of a more polished version of Robert Belgrade's take.

Robert O. Smith works for the Cybertron version, though it's kinda strange to hear Soundwave without the monotone sound.

Garry Chalk has the monotone sound, but it sounds pretty off for some reason.

Robert Belgrade, Jeff Bennett and Bronco D. Jackson are average.

My vote goes to G1 Frank Walker and second appearance Jeff Bennett for this one.

Both had really cool voices for the character and they are pretty much engraved in my mind.

I say second appearance for Bennett mostly cause his first appearance while still good didn't fell quite as strong. Also the vocoder effect was much cooler in his second appearance.

Frank Welker: I do prefer him with the voice-recorder thing but his cave of wonders voice (as he called it) is my favorite villain voice nonetheless

Frank Welker Superior, Everyone Else Inferior!

OK I had to get that out of my way. Soundwave is a character mostly defined by his voice but in Transformers: Prime he had no voice and yet I thought he had a lot of character. I really wish no voice actor was an option just cause. :p

But for actual voices I go with Frank Welker mostly for his G1 performance. His Dr. Claw voice vocoded sounds amazing. I think Soundwave have a truly robotic voice helped him stand out from the more lively mechanical life forms that are The Transformers.

Jeff Bennett is actually my second favourite, he sounds really robotic and emotionless which is really nice. I'd love for him to have another stab at the role someday.

Peter Jessop and Issac C. Singleton Jr are both in the same boat, great fitting choices that while they succeed at what they do, they aren't my favourite. Jessop sounds too light and I barely hear him while I'm not that fond of the effects on Issac's take, it's just the way it was done, not the performance just the effects.

Of the two Cybertron voices, I actually prefer Garry Chalk. I get what they were doing with Robert O. Smith as he was a radio DJ in real life but he sounds too much like your dad trying to hard to be cool. Garry's voice just meshed better IMO plus he kinda mirrors Robert Belgrade.

Speaking of which Robert Belgrade's take sounds good IMO. I like the effects he has on the voice and he actually sounds more personable which normally doesn't fit the traditional Soundwave but it would work for an Marvel or IDW esque Soundwave where he is more "cruzamatic" and speaks in a more complete sentence.

Bronco Jackson emulates the Dr. Claw voice well but sounds a bit too silly IMO.

BONUS: I've always thought Lee Tockar could make for an amazing Soundwave, He did Ravage in BW so I thought, hey he could the rest of Soundwave and his minions. Think his Makuta but vocoded. Also Whenever I read the IDW comics, in the current RID storyline I read Soundwave as James Spader. A mix between his Ultron and Red Reddington. It's weird but it actually fits well considering how much more personable Soundwave is in the comics. Frank Welker's version isn't that fitting for this Soundwave so I tried Spader and since then it has stuck.

I have some gripes with Robert O Smith & Gary Chalk. Their voices don't scream "Soundwave" to me at all. The effects aren't thick enough & the voices they picked are bland. BLAND being the key word here.

Frank Welker - Whether heavily modulated, or with the Dr. Claw voice up-and-center, he's badass; love 'im.

Robert Belgrade - This is... surprisingly decent, actually. Probably one of the only instances from this game where I can say that.

Robert O. Smith and Garry Chalk - They both sound pretty similar and even though Soundwave isn't known for being particularly emotive, they don't really sound like they're into it.

Jeff Bennett - With the vocoder at his side, Bennett did a great job at carrying on the Soundwave legacy.

Peter Jessop - They overdid the vocoder a bit here; I have a really hard time understanding what he's saying, to be honest.

Issac C. Singleton Jr. - A great impression of Frank Welker's voice, but still distinctive in his own right.

Bronco Jackson - A good impression of Frank and one of the better performances from the show, IMO, but I still think it doesn't stand out very much.

Frank is just classic in this role. The vocal effect on him fits very well, and the deep rasp that he had to the voice, while Frank has done several times before, works extremely well here in this role, especially in the Bayformers movies, where he gets some extremely sinister lines. 8.5/10

Robert and Garry both really don't have a lot to work with, and they both knid of fall into the same ballpark. They sound kind of bored, monotone, and leave little to no impression at all, which is sad considering Roberts Gravityman I felt he really could've done something with this given more material. 2/10

Jeff is almost on the exact same wave (I didn't even intend that pun) as Frank is. While he's a little more heavily effected, it still works incredibly well here, and Jeff's voice sounds very creepy in this role I feel. It's one of Jeff's more underrated roles I feel and I think some of you can see why. 8/10

Robert is surprisingly decent in this role considering the game is known for its mediocre voice acting. He has this more breathy rasp than gravelly like Frank had and it works surprisingly well here. 7.5/10

Peter is a bit hard to judge since he is so heavily vocally effected that I have a real hard time understanding what he is saying, no matter how many times I listen to it. I guess it sounds okay, but he really doesn't have all that much to work with and again, it's really hard to understand what he's saying. 5.5/10

Isaac works extremely well in this role. It's much deeper compared to some of the performances and he doesn't really add a rasp but it still works incredibly well here and in the games he is given some good lines and he has this somewhat creepy delivery which works very well. 8/10

Bronco is basically doing a Frank impression, and it is a good impression, he just doesn't have all that much to work with so it doesn't really leave all that much of an impression. 6/10

1. Frank Welker
2. Jeff Bennett
3. Isaac C. Singleton Jr.
4. Robert Belgrade
5. Bronco Jackson
6. Peter Jessop
7. Robert.O. Smith, Garry Chalk

Frank Welker's always good and he's the best when it comes to Soundwave.

Isaac Sinlgeton Jr wowed me, really, really good.

Jeff Bennet of course I always love and his Soundwave is no exception.

Peter Jessop, pretty good but the filter's a little heavy.

For Bronco Jackson, I feel that this was his best peformance and it was the best performance from Cyber Missions.

Garry Chalk/Robert O Smith, both sound the same but neither very Soundwavey.

Robert Belgrade's delivery is better than others in that game, the filter sounds a bit cool, that's all the good I can say.

Why is Peter Jessops soundwave saying ?
said at 1:43 PM on Sun Mar 31 2013
@jonhardwick That clip is faulty, because he's saying two things at once in both of his lines. ROTF's Team Deathmatch games are good to pick up character lines, but it seems the guy was playing as Soundwave and his battle lines (like "Enemy unit neutralized") got muffled along with his score lines ("Decepticons take the lead" or "Autobots take the lead") so that's why it's so hard to hear in that clip.

@OptimusSolo It sounds a lot like his Dr. Claw voice but that's not my point. It's more of Frank started the famous Soundwave voice but in the live action movie he didn't but in the game verison of the same movie some one did an impression of his G1 voice. It's just odd to me
said at 5:58 PM on Mon Oct 17 2011
@Music Meister Welker's Soundwave always sounded like Dr. Claw. It's just that in G1, Scott Brownlee used a vocoder filter on Soundwave's lines (Although in two episodes the effect was left out. An almost identical vocoding effect was used on Peter Jessop, Jeff Bennett, Robert O. Smith, Garry Chalk, Robert Belgrade and Isaac C. Singleton, Jr.

@Music Meister Maybe it was deliberate, because in Dark of the Moon his voice still isn't processed. The same goes for the DOTM game, where Soundwave was voiced by Isaac C. Singleton, Jr.
TylerMirage (Admin)
said at 12:13 AM on Tue Apr 3 2012
@Music Meister It's not really a matter of "forgetting" the vocoder effect in the movies, it's a matter of creative control. Michael Bay ultimately decided against it and that's that. Same reason why Optimus has flames, or Starscream is an F-22 or Blackout died. Simply decisions that were made. Which, I mean, it let's Welker's skills shine a bit more, even if I *too* would've preferred some sort of modification to the Soundwave voice in the movies.

@OptimusSolo It was 20-ish years between G1 and ROTF; his voiced probably aged, making Soundwave sound more like Dr. Claw.
