Peter Cullen obviously. He is Prime. But whenever he decides to retire I feel like Clancy Brown would be a very suitable replacement.

Except for David Kaye there aren't really any new takes on this character. Everyone just sounds like they're doing an impression of Peter Cullen. Garry Chalk and Neil Kaplan are rather good impressions, the others are horrible.

@Rial Vestro Really? Garry sounds nothing like Peter in my ears. Neil once said that he actually could do a near perfect Peter Cullen Optimus (and he can too) but they wanted it to be modeled rather than copied for that series.
Otherwise.... yeah it's a strange variety otherwise

The best are Cullen(original) Chalk(SECOND BEST AND HE REALLY SOUNDS LIKE A LEADER) Neil Kaplan(Great voice for a lousy series)
Cullen maybe the original but Chalk has this very firm military like voice for the character. Chalk sounded like he meant business when someone messed up as you can hear in his clip while Cullen was just too forgiving mostly.

@pete All caps was an accident I forgot to fix. Since this was supposed to be an updated opinion. I guess lousy is a bit too much. It actually had a decent amount of episodes. Since this post 2 seasons of Prime have passed so I like Cullen's Prime voice more than Gaary's voice in BW and TUT but still like it nonetheless. I think his Cullen's performance in G1 isn't bad but it doesn't have the emotion his movie and Prime voice does. It's at least better than the old, dry, hoarse voice Frank used for Megatron in G1 and if not for Prime he wouldn't be my favorite Megatron and it is one of the best voices and performances in an 80's cartoon.
Replysaid at 12:53 PM on Tue Mar 12 2013
@pete I dunno if this is just me or not, but I thought RiD was actually pretty good and I really liked Daniel Riordan as Megatron.
Granted I haven't seen the series in a while and you're certainly free to your opinion, I'm just sorta left wondering what made it so bad. Especially when the Unicron Trilogy came out not too long afterwards.

@Metabad RiD's page seems like it was received well and IA never watched it but instead watched the Unicron Trilogy. It had a decent number of episodes but I didn't like the Autobots vs. Predacons concept but Megatron looked cool. I had his toy which was awesome.

The odds of someone surpassing Peter Cullen as the voice of Prime are about as high as Michael bay making a good movie. David, Garry, and Daniel are pretty good too. Robert Belgrade is probably the weakest.

David Kaye's Optimus is no Peter Cullen, but he does sound manly enough as the voice of reason and authority. Not as experience or rough as other incarnations, but still a calm, tactical leader.
Cullen is the best though; his character exudes authority, even with the silliest of lines.

Peter Cullen: He's good as the original voice, I really prefer him as Optimus in his later roles though. (Movie, Prime, WFC, FOC)
Garry Chalk: I like both his Primal and Prime voices, but are good as a younger, military leader like Optimus would be.
Neil Kaplan: He's a nice balance between Chalk and Cullen.
David Kaye: Who knew that he could pull off a Megs and a Prime? He's great as the younger, more inexperienced Optimus.
Robert Belgrade: Stiff and weak. Not completely horrible, but definitely the worst.
Ron Hayden: Good Garry chalk impression, really sounds similar.
Eric Edwards: He really nails the Peter Cullen impression. If for some reason, Cullen could not make an episode of Prime or something, Edwards is the one to call.
Overall Cullen is still the best although really only for his more recent voices, then Edwards for nailing Cullen’s voice, then Chalk, Kaplan, Hayden and finally Belgrade last.

Peter Cullen wins by 30 country miles in my book.
Gary Chalk is pretty good, though his voice is different than I remember. He still sounds like Optimus though.
Neil Kaplan is OK. I think he was a little miscast, made Optimus sound a little too gruff for my liking, but it's not terrible or anything.
David Kaye isn't too bad either, considering his is younger version of Prime.
Robert Belgrade sounds incredibly stiff to my ears. His voice doesn't seem to fit the character at all.
Ron Hayden sounds like a weaker version of Belgrade's Prime. Definitely my least favorite of the bunch.
Eric Edwards was also surprisingly good, mind you not Cullen good, but darn close.

@OptimusSolo I respectfully disagree, OpSolo. :) Since his TFA incarnation is meant to be a younger, more inexperienced 'Bot, Kaye's portrayal is pretty good at portraying that. Obviously Kaye's voice here wouldn't mesh well with the live-action Optimus, but also vice-versa. Cullen wouldn't have been a good match for TFA Optimus, since he's better at doing the epic, deep, learned wise commander-aspect.
Replysaid at 11:36 PM on Tue Apr 3 2012
@TylerMirage I got through all of Animated and I personally don't like anything they did with Optimus in this show. I understand he is supposed to be a younger version etc etc, but it still doesnt mesh with me. The voice, the look, the personality are all just plain bad :)

Unlike the Megatron voice compare I'm totally agreeing with the most popular. PETER CULLEN IS OPTIMUS PRIME!
Now Garry Chalk is a second to Cullen. He's voice just seems to fit and I always thought if, heaven forbide, Cullen couldn't make it then Chalk should be the guy to call.
Kaye's voice is...well...he is a different version of Optimus and I can't farily compare him to the others. I'll just say he's a decent version of that character.
Also Belgrade, Edwards, and Hayden are my leasts favorites. Some had voices that were forced while others just had bad voice acting.
Neil is...in the middle. Not bad but far from great.

Yes, I did. It IS the only good TF series, but it's voice acting is far from perfect. And I prefer Chalk's Prime best. And what I mean by "G1 fanboys" are people who, like me, believe that G1 is the only good Transformer series, but they also think that about the voice actors from G1, they pretty much hate anyone who doesn't favorite the original voice actor. Get it?

I have to admit, Peter Cullen practically OWNS this character, so I'll give him my vote. But as for putting a new spin on the great icon, I say David Kaye did pretty well. Even though he sounds young and not quite as experienced as G1 O.P., he still has that commanding and heroic edge to his voice. All of the others I just couldn't get into.

I disagree, in essence they are basically the same character. I would agree with you if you made a similar argument on the Inferno compare where those two are nothing like the same character but here I think most TF Fans agree that Prime and Primal are basically the same character even if 'technically' they are not

I first grew up with Beast Wars. So I wasn't familiar with the old Transformers at the time.
I was more familiar with Gary Chalk's Optimus. When my big brother showed me the old Transformers. I thought it was weird at first.
When I got older, I started liking it.
Peter Cullen and Gary Chalk are my favorite voices for Optimus.
I like David Kaye more as Megatron.

Great to see you stop by TFG1 - I am jealous I didn't get in on all the Beast Wars interviews like I did with Lion-O!!! We will get on changing that spelling ASAP!

First off before I even say what I'm gonna say personally for Optimus Prime Peter Cullen all the way.
Secondly the following is not a advertisement:
My friend Steve and I recently interviewed David Kaye, Mr. Kaye told us that the Transformers Animated crew wanted a younger sounding Prime. He did do the voice younger, but they didn't like it very much. So they had him use pretty much his own voice with a slightly higher pitch.
Thirdly to the web admins: Just so ya know it's spelled Garry with 2 R's for Chalk. He told me so. Also keep up the excellent work.
I think that's it for Prime from me lol

As if there's a reason to even debate.
Peter Cullen! One of the most epic voices of all time.

Peter Cullen hands down. He IS the voice of Prime. As much as everyone else is nice, Mr. Cullen just cannot be replaced as Prime.

I prefer out of this voice cast:
Cullen
Chalk
Kaye
They did the best renditions. I am not a fan of Transformers RiD at all.

Peter Cullen is THE ONE Optimus Prime to me. His voice can,t be rivalred, not even by Garry Chalk.
Needless to say, Peter Cullen has a voice of Lord.

1. Cullen always will be no.1
2. David Kaye, atleast he doesn't sound like Megatron voice Prime.
Gary Chalk is awful, his Prime voice is exactly the same as his Primal voice in Beast Wars and Beast Machines, he's much better at playing villain characters.

Prime and Primal aren't the same character. Same type, sure, but not the way the Primes are versions of the same character.

Peter Cullen is the original. You simply have to love it, but David Kaye is great for the new incarnation of Optimus. I love all the voices on the animated series.

I like Peter Cullen as Prime best, but in the film now, not in the original series. I think with age his Prime sounds so much better. Rating just these, I think Gary Chalk is the best, and Neil Kaplan is just way too generic. David Kaye is fine as a young Prime.

Chalk actually did do the voice of Prime, but not in Beast Wars. There was a scene in the follow-up, Beast Machines, where Primal has a vision of Optimus Prime talking to him, and Chalk did the voice for that as well.

Even so, in technical terms Optimus Primal still repesents The current Optimus Prime.

Optimus Primal isn't the same as Optimus Prime. They are two different characters. Primal and the Maximals are descendants of the Autobots.
