Transformers Transformers

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Galvatron with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Transformers

Perhaps one of the more controversial Voice Compares due to the fact that a large portion of the fandom views Galvatron and Megatron as one in the same. However, for the sake of this compare you will notice that in all of the clips he refers to himself as Galvatron which signifies at least some level of individual difference from Megatron.

Leonard Nimoy is my favourite, he was just perfect in the role and one of the many standout performances from the film.

Frank Welker was a nice fit but he sounds too raspy in the series and overdoes the insane mess a bit. Luckily for him he does much better in Age of Extinction toning down the loudness for a gruffer, unhinged take that fits more.

David Kaye and Daniel Riordan are about on the same spot. They're good but not all that amazing since Kaye's using his Megatron voice and same for Riordan.

Rick Thomas is.... well. Just go listen to that clip again because that, my friend, is the stuff of unintentionally hilarious legends.

Jeff Manning sounds rather slow and unremarkable but still sounds like he's chewing up the scenery so I can't take that away from him.

With the sound clip he has, Rick makes Galvatron sound like he's just relieved that he's managed to move a particularly difficult piece of furniture.

VC thoughts update

To be honest, I always liked Frank Welker's G1 take the most. He is just so insane and overbearing that I feel works perfectly for the character. I always felt that Galvatron is a rejuvenated Megatron (hence the lack of a rasp) who can't really cope with the amount of power he has. Frank's G1 voice is the voice I imagine coming out of Galvatron II in the Marvel Comics.

Leonard Nimoy works for Galvatron before Unicron was destroyed, but I can't really see this working after Unicron's destruction.

Daniel Riordan is incredibly enjoyable in the role. He sounds pretty insane and overbearing, which fits the role perfectly.

David Kaye is pretty good, but not as memorable as the previous three.

Jeff Manning has a really nice slow delivery and he seems to be haaaaviiiiiing fuuuuuun cheeeeewiiiiing theeeee... sceeeeneeeeryyyyy. One of the best performances in that game.

Rik Thomas is laughably bad. I mean, his delivery is terrible, but that's what made his take so memorable and quotable.

Leonard Nimoy was awesome as Galvatron, but Frank Welker was also very good. I think he did Galvatron much better in Age of Extinction than in G1.

David Kaye and Daniel Riordan are good, but nothing amazing.

Rik Thomas is hilarious in the role. Darn that Soundwave! EAAAAUUUGGGHHH!

Manning is unremarkable.

I'll go with Nimoy.

I think I'm actually going to go with Frank Welker on this one, not for his G1 performance but his AOE performance. In AOE he just sounds more unhinged and gruffer than his loud and obnoxious G1 portrayal. It's also the voice I hear for him in the IDW comics, a brutal yet twisted sounding individual.

The late and great Leonard Nimoy would be my new favourite, I'm glad they managed to get Mr. Spock for Galvatron as he was just epic sounding. He wasn't as unhinged as I would have liked but this is before he became insane, oh well.

Even though I said I didn't like Daniel Riordan as Megatron, I think he's more fitting as Galvatron as he does have a very savage and unhinged type of voice.

David Kaye is awesome as usual but unfortunately it's just his Megatron in his a nice shiny new colour scheme. Riordan's is that too but Daniel sounds more like how I imagine Galvatron.

Rick Thomas: DARN THAT SOUNDWAVE....EAAAAUUUGGGHHH! lol that is hilarious

Jeff Manning sounds too slow with his delivery and honestly he's not that memorable.

BONUS: Of the Megatron voices who have yet to voice Galvatron. I'd love to see what Richard Newman and Fred Tatasciore have to offer in the role. I also suggest Clancy Brown, Miguel Ferrer and Jason Douglas like what I did with Megatron.

Well after seeing Age of Extinction a while back, Frank used a different voice for Galvatron. He may not have said much but his voice sounds better in that movie compared to the cartoon.

However, he still remains 2nd place for me as my vote stays with Leonard. RIP to him.

@Ross123 I personally liked both the insane Galvatron and the AOE Galvatron.

I personally prefer Welker because, as much as I loved Nimoy in the movie, Welker had a lot more material in the cartoon.
said at 2:30 PM on Sun Mar 1 2015
@Ross123 And yes, I was extremely shocked when I found out about Nimoy's passing.

He didn't have as much material as Welker, but he still made Galvatron memorable.

RIP Leonard Nimoy.

@Starscreamsfan I like both of Frank's performances too, it's just that I prefer the one from AoE as I find to be a bit more menacing.

And couldn't agree more about Leonard's performance.

Frank Welker was pretty awesome and had some chilling delivery in Age of Extinction, but for the time being I'm gonna have to go with Leonard Nimoy. Just listening to his opening line nearly gives me chills! He was so intense and compelling in the role and his low gravelly voice worked wonders for Galvatron and made him sound like such a bada**! It was probably my favorite performance in the entire movie. However, I am really looking forward to hearing Frank's Galvatron in the next movie, though, and if he gets some really good dialogue I might change my vote to him.

David Kaye and Daniel Riordan sound alright too, but I haven't seen enough of their performances to say much.

I pick Leonard Nimoy, e sited Galvatron best, and supported the "reborn person" thing.

All the other Galvatrons were just recolors instead of reformats so they all had the same voice as the Megatron they came from.

My favourite voice for Galvatron is Leonard since he sounds PURE EVIL & very threatening.

Frank is a close 2nd, I wonder if he uses the same voice or a different 1 in Age of Extinction.

Daniel is 3rd since he sounds similar to the previous 2.

Rick is just average.

Jeff sounds too much like an average bland robot while David sounds like an average bland guy instead of a robot.

@RabidSonicFan I know, but his first line about not having fear due to not having a soul was pretty cool...even though I admittedly don't remember it myself and just remember screaming on the inside, "WELKER WELKER WELKER!!!" Too bad that was his only fight scene...

To me Leonard Nimoy will always be Galvatron, his performance and the deep menacing vocal tone worked perfectly for the character and made him a very threatening presence.

Frank Welker as much as I love his work sadly does nothing for me, his high pitched tone really made me dislike the character as time went on.

David Kaye's take on the character sadly is no different from his performance as Megatron because it is Megatron only with a different color scheme, so nothing really different.

Same with D Riordan, same character/different colors.

Leonard Nimoy was wickedly awesome as Galvatron.

Frank Welker was great playing him as insane, but why did they alter his character so much? Probably to make him different enough from Megatron.

David Kaye is great even if it is still the same voice as Megatron. Galvatron has lately just been a recolored Megs.

Daniel Riordan could get another shot at playing Megatron/Galvatron and make them sound kind of eerie. I've heard him narrate a program about haunted hotels on the Travel Channel and his voice was pretty eerie.
said at 2:26 PM on Sun Mar 1 2015
@Polyester Funk They changed his character because, even though the show went into a different direction, it was still a kid's show. So they had to find an excuse as to why Galvatron can't kill a character the same way he killed Starscream in the movie.

I know this may shock a lot of people but I like Riordan the most. I like the higher voice and how he really captures the sinister side of Galvatron. Nimoy is my close second choice.
Not sure who should be my third, I'd choose Kaye if he differed his voice from his Megatron voice.

Hm, to be honest I like Nimoy the most here. He sounds the most like a cunning schemer with a slight sadistic streak.

Welker sounds...meh, I really don't like the effects they added to his voice, it sort of hurts my head. That and it sounds a little more high pitched than his Megatron voice which I don't really like. Normally I like Welker but here he just doesn't do it for me.

David Kaye sounds pretty good, but he doesn't really fit Galvatron, that and he sounds more or less the exact same as his Megatron voice, if only a little higher pitched.

Daniel Riordan actually sounds great, he gets Galvatron's sadistic insanity across really well. A being who cares nothing for the well being of his minions. That and he just plain sounds cool. He's my second favourite here.

Jeff Manning sounds pretty horrible, way too deep, little emotion...bleh, by far my least favourite.

The unknown voice actor is absolutely hilarious.

Overall my vote goes to Nimoy with Riordan as a close second.

I'm voting for Leonard Nimoy. Frank Welker and David Kaye do a good job, but they sound the same as their normal Megatron voices (though Frank's is a bit higher pitched).

@RabidSonicFan Nimoy was pretty great, but I really enjoyed the insanity Welker brought to his Galvy. Just in that clip alone -- total mental breakdown. :D They were in two different places, mentally, so it works out.

I'm going to say both, because I feel Nimoy's Galvatron signifies the being once known as Megatron fully under Unicron's control, powered up immensely, as shown in the deep and harsh tone of his new voice, but really no longer who he once was, no longer laughing maniacally or quietly contemplating how he will destroy his enemy like he once did as Megatron.

I feel that once Unicron was destroyed, his demonic control and influence over Galvatron's mind ceased, allowing Galvatron to kind of revert back into some semblance of the old Megatron. I think this is reflected in the way in which Welker chose to speak, seemingly depicting a younger, revitalized version of the old Megatron, who is unable to cope with the awesome power of his new body and becomes unhinged.

Welker's voice for Galvatron reminds me of an evil demonic Ray Stantz from "The Real Ghostbusters" or possibly John Lithgow from the "twilight Zone Movie".

I like how Welker's Galvatron says "decepticons!" in the clip.
It sounds full of malice and evil intent, Like old megs on steroids and gone insane!

Since Galvatron is insane during the third season, it was probably the voice director who decided to take Galvatron's voice in a new direction. In some of the older toy commercials featuring Galvatron, Welker uses his Megatron voice.
