VC thoughts update

I really like Casey Kasem a lot in this role. It is very different from his Robin from SuperFriends and Mark from Battle of the Planets, yet still recognizable enough. He really nailed Cliffjumper's impulsive personality perfectly.

Nolan North is also quite good in the role. He does have some great youthful energy and he also has great chemistry with Troy Baker's Jazz.

Billy Brown is the best of the two TFP VAs, making Cliffjumper quite affable and a fun smooth talker.

The Rock works in the role, but he didn't last too long, so that doesn't make him as memorable as Brown.

Doron Bell, Jr. is decent.

David Kaye is pretty generic.

And forgot about Steve Blum. He's actually pretty good IMO. He's right in-between North and Brown.

My Top 5 Favourite Cliffjumper Voices:

5. Nolan North/ Dwayne Johnson
4. Doron Bell Jr.
3. Billy Brown
2. David Kaye
1. Casey Kasem

Future VA Suggestions:

Raphael Sbarge would be really solid as Cliffjumper. A Kooky and Crazy version of his Kaidan Alenko voice would be a nice middle ground between Billy Brown and Casey Kasem's renditions.

For a Slightly Rougher voice, David Hayter would be natural fit, provided he added a more 'eccentric' tone to his Solid Snake voice....... That and to hear Cliffjumper say 'GRRRRRRR.... Unicron......"

I also recommend David Wills, C Thomas Howell, Deidrich Bader and Doug Erlholtz.

I prefer Cliffjumper to be a paranoid triggerhappy little guy so I'm going to go with Casey Kasem. It's definitely one of those characters in his career along with Dr. Arkeville who don't fall into his usual type of roles. He does manage to make Cliffjumper not sound like Shaggy and his voice is a lot gruffer than he usually does which is nice.

David Kaye was pretty cool as Cliffjumper in TFA, I really love the smokey and throaty sounding voice he did, my only complaint is that his voice was really inconsistent, something he sounded lighter other times he went closer to what he did as Warpath.

Prime Cliffjumper is alright, cool but honestly generic but of the two voices, I prefer Billy Brown since he had a whole episode to work with rather than the first 5 minutes like The Rock. I mean The Rock was such a major stunt casting choice, I mean the novelty of the casting is cool but in the end, it didn't leave that much of an impression on me. If he did reprise Cliffjumper in the live-action movies, now that'd be great but as of right now...he's just alright.

Nolan North is alright but he played Cliffjumper kinda too close to his Smokescreen which I prefer him as. He's good but I think he could have done Cliffjumper in a more unique take.

Doron Bell Jr. works for Energon Cliffjumper and maybe could do a traditional Cliffjumper but at the same time, I've always saw him more of a Jazz type of voice myself.

I'll give it to Casey Kasem on this. I like the others but Casey's really the one with the most consistent and unique sounding voice here.

BONUS: I really love Cliff having a really throaty raspy voice so i think Corey Feldman doing a less murky sounding Slash from TMNT would be the perfect voice for Cliffjumper. Vincent Tong doing his Shank could also fit Cliffjumper well.

@Mark Johnson Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's a pretty busy guy. The fact that they got him to voice Cliffjumper the first time was impressive enough, actually.

Billy Brown's episode was August 2012, and in cartoons the VO is usually done several months in advance. Depending on when it was recorded he would've likely had his hands tied with a movie like GI Joe 2 or Pain and Gain.

I like Casey Kasem the best. He's just the version I think of. Dwayne Johnson and Billy Brown were good for the big, brawny Cliffjumper.

David Kaye seems good and Nolan North is alright, but it's just his regular voice and doesn't seem to leave much of an impact on me. Not that there's anything wrong with his normal voice, but as I said it just doesn't say "Yeah, that's Cliffjumper."

Casey Kasem - Not much to say; it was Casey as his usual, likable self.

Doron Bell Jr - It's fine, I guess.

David Kaye - A solid performance; he did a good job at differentiating it from his other voices on the show.

"The Rock" - He did a good job and he was likable, even though he was only around for one episode.

Billy Brown - He was good; though I don't think he sounded that much like Dwayne.

Nolan North - Nolan's good, as usual; but he's kind of just using the typical Nathan Drake-type voice that he got typecast with.

"And the award for 'Best Celebrity Cameo in an Animated Movie/TV Show' goes to Mr. Dwayne Johnson!"

While I'm not one for big-name celebrities doing voiceover work (Bayformers films for example), I have to say that The Rock was more than perfect for Cliffjumper, ESPECIALLY for TFP. It was just a great pleasure hearing him speak, even if it was only for 5 minutes.

Brown I think did a great job replicating the voice while still sounding natural, bringing him for a very close 2nd.

Kasem's performance I loved, and falls right in 2nd as well.

North I thought did spectacular, too. Having a slightly younger age/equally reckless personality gave that rendition its edge.

The other two I haven't seen/heard much of, so I can't really say much about them.

So in reality, The Rock 'rocks' it out of the park.

@DreamMaster08X "...While I'm not one for big-name celebrities doing voiceover work (Bayformers films for example)..."

You *do* realize that the Bayformers films are some of the BEST examples of NOT relying too heavily on celebrity voice actors, right?

Hugo Weaving, Leonard Nimoy and Tony Todd

Peter Cullen, Jess Harnell, Frank Welker, Charlie Adler, Mark Ryan, Grey DeLisle, Tom Kenny, Kevin Michael Richardson, Robin Atkin Downes, Greg Berg, John DiMaggio, Keith Szarabajka and Andre Sogliuzzo

So please, tell me more about how the Bayformers films rely heavily on celebrity voice-over work.
said at 7:22 PM on Fri Oct 4 2013
@TylerMirage That was a self-nullifying comment. I highly resent my statement. I certainly should've been more clear.

In general, movies usually add celeb voices in animated films (or celebs infor the sake of having them trying to cash in on their popularity rather then for their being the ideal casting choice (which can be the case about half the time), and I've grown a HUGE disdain for that certain factor. I mostly grind on the fact that Bay dismissed Welker as the voice of Megatron for the movies because he wasn't right for the part. I understand that, but to me, that seemed a bit distasteful, as Welker would later prove his worth to the 'Prime' series. Plus, excluding the VAs for the Transformers (mind you, I really did like Nimoy's 'Sentinel' voice, and voted him as the best voice in the VC), by the third movie, there seemed to be a LOT of big-name/critically-praised actors (Turturro, Malkovich, McDormand, etc) who seem to be cast because of their popularity and become the butt of too many sub-par jokes (especially poor Turturro).

But I digress.

The original G1 movie had celebrities as well, I know. However, I do give that movie credit for using them to great potential (ESPECIALLY Welles as Unicron).

So I realize my childish-sounding mistake and recant it. I let too much of my bias get a hold of me this time. My apologies.

@DreamMaster08X No need to apologize, DM. :) I had to try and remember where I made this comment because I thought I might've come off as being too rude myself and might have to apologize for it. You're sorry, I'm sorry, we're both sorry for something that's not worth being sorry about. ;)

Bay had his vision of what he wanted for Megatron, and as the director, he had the final say and whether we like it or not, he didn't feel that Frank fit his version of Megs. But hey, at least he cast him as other characters.

I think we can both agree that there are times when movies rely on celebrity VAs and they work quite well (Welles, Nimoy, Johnson^), and times when they don't.

And as for casting well-known live-action actors, well, what high-profile, big-budget movie ISN'T guilty of that? ;)
said at 7:30 PM on Thu Oct 10 2013
@TylerMirage I thought the best out of the celebrities (apart from Nimoy) was Todd as the Fallen. Definitely a casting choice of the right kind. I mean, you could never go wrong with a voice like that! XD

Though, to be honest, I still prefer him as Dreadwing in TFP. :)

I actually like David Kaye the best, just going by these clips. Cliff is an okay character in Prime, but his voice and personality isn't very memorable in my opinion. He was just this funny/nice guy who was, well, nice... Yeah, he was a little cocky like the other versions of Cliffjumper, but he just sounds like a nice-guy who's a bit of a hot-shot. He sounds a little too domesticated and less funny.

I think the smokier, throaty voice and extremely cocky attitude makes him more memorable, and Casey Kasem's performance in G1 really reflects that, but I feel David Kaye does just a little better at getting that cocky, itchy-trigger-finger hot-shot sound than Casey Kasem. Although Casey Kasem originated the role and was pretty memorable too, I feel David Kaye does the same thing I like about Casey Kasem's Cliffjumper just a hair better.

Voting for David Kaye. :)

Casey, Nolan and Dwayne get my votes.

Casey was great for his G1 incarnation, and fit the role of a soldier always energetic and ready for battle.

Nolan is perfect for a younger version of Cliffjumper, one that is more reckless yet still gets the job done.

Dwayne fits perfectly for the Prime incorporation. His cocky and brassy nature really fits Prime Cliff. Billy Brown did exceptionally well, but I would have preferred if they got The Rock to come voice him once more for that one episode.

Has anyone noticed that David Kaye's Cliffjumper sounds slightly different every time he appears in Animated? He sounded slightly more high pitched the first time he spoke (transwarped), then he sounded like a very deep voiced Casey Casem (see the clip above), and then sounded as if he were talking through clenched teeth (Decepticon air). It's still David Kaye, but I can't help but wonder why he sounded different in all three of his speaking parts.

@Scooby-Dooby-Doo Characterization is for the most part irrelevant to the actual voice and acting. We are comparing the voice acting itself, not the character or the shows.
said at 6:34 PM on Thu Jul 11 2013
@NCZ However, the personality and characterization are two of the elements that drive the voice actor or actress to do the voice they're performing. On some characters, the personalities help you narrow the choices down.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 8:08 PM on Thu Jul 11 2013
@Scooby-Dooby-Doo While true, someone's favourite voice for a character doesn't have to be the same as their favourite version of the character. For example, even if I prefer the DoTM incarnation of Sentinel Prime and love Leonard Nimoy's performance, I voted for Townsend Coleman there because he was the most memorable and fun to listen to.
said at 8:55 PM on Thu Jul 11 2013
@NCZ True, true. It's similar to me liking the WFC personality of Frenzy but thinking that Frank Welker's voice from G1 is the better choice.
said at 1:41 PM on Fri Jul 19 2013
@Scooby-Dooby-Doo I haven't seen any of the other Transformers series to give a substantial opinion on this, but I find it funny how you say Prime gave him the most character development and personality when he was killed off in the first episode, and then appeared later briefly in flashbacks.

Honestly, I love TF Prime, but it seemed like the writers didn't care much about him from what I saw, and that kind of annoyed me. I thought killing off Cliffjumper as early as they was a bit of a waste.

1. Casey Kasem
2. Nolan North
3. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
4. Billy Brown
5. Doron Bell Jr.
6. David Kaye

This compare is difficult because all these interpretations of Cliffjumper are so different (we've got two "antsy little guy" versions, two "energetic go-getters", and two "big, square-jawed heroic" types). That being said, I'd say that the original and Animated "short fuse" versions are the ones that most define Cliff for me.
