Toy Story Toy Story

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Woody with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Toy Story

Woody is one of the main characters of the whole Toy Story series whom was in all the Toy Story movies. Woody is an old pull-string Cowboy toy that originally came from a Kids TV Show from the 1950's called "Woody's Round Up" whom was known as Andy's favorite toy since Kindergarten (in which he got the toy from his father years ago). Woody is well known as the leader of Andy's toys whom takes his position very seriously in which he ended up being very competitive with the then-new toy Buzz Lightyear (but fortunately over the course of the 1dt film they do become friends). But despite on how overly competitive and temperamental Woody can be he does genuinely care for Andy and is a firm believer on how important it is for a toy to help a kid to have a nice happy childhood.

Ladies and Gentleman today on the Toy Story VC section we take a look at one of the stars of the Toy Story series... WOODY! Lets start this little round-up here shall we?

Tom Hanks
- I am one of the various people whom loved the Toy Story movies and of course Tom Hanks as Woody is one of the various reasons why. Tom hanks was a perfectly natural choice for the role as his performance suited Woody's various nice and lets just say not so nice moments very well. Tom's work on the role is a grand example of the voice work in the Toy Story series and is a known example of how Pixar is known for using Celebrity Voice Talent well.

Jim Hanks- While normally the idea of casting a celebrities relative to fill in for said celebrity is usually seen as pathetic and cheap but fortunately there is a good reason why this is normally seen as an exception. While sure hearing Jim's voice its not hard to tell that Tom didn't reprise the role but Jim did make a good attempt at trying to sound like Tom. Jim's performance for the role also suited Woody's persona pretty well, granted usually when Jim is voicing Woody he doesn't have a lot of lines but Jim's overall voice work as Woody is really good as well.

Overall I am of coruse going with Tom but Jim has done some good work as well...

Tom Hanks IS Woody.

I'll admit Woody is not my favourite character in the franchise but he definitely has stronger character development than Buzz, especially in the second movie.

Tom Hanks was the perfect fit for him. There's just something about his voice that screams high-strung cowboy doll who has a balance of anger and happy moments. Without a doubt he came into this role just fine without even having to flesh it out.

I'm sorry but Jim Hanks doesn't even come close. He sounds similar enough but he has none of the emotion or the charm that made the character who he is.

Tom Hanks gets my vote.

Tom is the winner here. The part seems to be tailor made for him. He and Woody even seem to look slightly alike. That being said, Jim does a more than worthy job of filling his big brother's shoes (er cowboy boots). In fact, on the line "hold your horses, Rex", there seems to be virtually no difference at all.

1. Tom Hanks- He is Woody for sure. He sounds natural in both his good and selfish moments and it's perfect for Woody.
2. Jim Hanks- I always noticed a bit of a change in Woody's voice when I was a kid from the computer games, but I never knew it was Tom's brother. He is a great stand-in for Tom. He has a lighter take on Tom's Woody, but it's really good.

Tom Hanks is a great voice for Woody! He's the best. Jim may be a good substitute, but Tom Hanks is Woody.

Tom fits this better. Jim does a good impression, but he's not quite at the level Tom is, so to speak.

Tom gets my vote. Jim is a bit too whiny.

Tom Hanks IS Woody. Tom Hank is easily one of my all-time favourite actors and his performance as Woody is one of his best. He brings a nice amount of authority and compassion to the role as the leader of Andy's Toys. He's not infallible as he can easily get jealous and has other flaws. Tom brings so much depth in his performance as Woody. This is easily one of my all-time favourite celebrity voice acting performances.

I'm amazed Tom's brother Jim is a really good voice match for him. Jim is recognizably different sounding in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command but I feel in some of the other games he's voiced Woody in he's far more spot on.

They're both excellent but ultimately its Tom Hanks who defines Woody and he's got my vote.

Of course my vote's for Tom Hanks, but his brother definitely fooled me; I thought that was Tom and no one else until I trained my ears to spot the difference(s).

Obviously this IS Tom Hanks' role, but his brother actually does a really good impersonation.

Tom Hanks is perfect for Woody. If I were to make my own movies, I'd consider him for a perfect role that's just right for him.

Tom Hanks, no doubt about it. I can't remember Woody on star command and I watched that a lot as a kid. Weird. Tom Hanks is one of my fave actors, so that would make me a little bit bias, but I did hear Toy Story when I was young. Quite a few of my fave movies have Tom Hanks in them lol

Is Jim impersonating his brother or do their voices just naturally sound alike?
said at 3:07 AM on Tue Apr 17 2012
@pete We may never know, but if it is an impression he must have gotten Tom into a lot of trouble when they were kids.

@pete Sometimes, family members sound alike with some minor differences. *shrug*
