Slinky Dog

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Slinky Dog with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Toy Story

Slinky Dog is a toy dachshund with a southern accent whose front and back legs are separated by a slinky spring. This gives him the ability to stretch to great distances, which he uses in various ways.

Given the relaxed southern nature in his character, Jim Varney (best known for his many Ernest movies) was a great choice for Slinky. His heavy accent and slow-paced voice fit generally sleepy looking spring dog like a glove.

Sadly, Varney passed away one year after Toy Story 2 in 2000. Having never thought there would a Toy Story 3, I always did take note that whenever I watched Blake Clark in many Adam Sandler movies, his voice always reminded me of Varney. So it came to no surprise when Toy Story 3 was announced and we knew Slinky was returning that Clark would take over the role. A perfect choice.

It's no real surprise that Blake Clark and Jim Varney were good friends prior to Varney's passing.

Jim Varney was perfect as Slinky, he was just a great supporting character and his relaxed southern is just perfect for it. May he rest in peace.

Blake Clark is The perfect replacement voice for Jim, not much else to say with him.

Darryl Kurylo is a solid stand in for Jim too but doesn't quite do it as well as Blake does.

My vote goes to Jim but Blake also does this role well.

Jim Varney's voice is very nostalgic for me, so I'm going with his voice. :-)

Darryl is a decent stand-in. He'd probably be a bit better if he had more dialogue.

Jim gets my vote.

I don't think they could've found a better replacement for Jim than Blake. Probably the only person on the planet who could match that voice.

Darryl's all right. Not fantastic, not terrible.

Darryl's not a bad stand in, shame he didn't get more dialog for the role

I'll go with Jim Varney since he was the original, but it was definitely a great decision to get Blake Clarke as he sounds so much like Jim.

@myopinion1 It's not just you. Blake's clip cuts before he even says a word.

Jim Varney wins out, but damn, Blake Clark emulates his voice perfectly. I wouldn't be able to tell it WASN'T him if I didn't know he'd passed away.

It's a shame Jim Varney died after Toy Story 2. He knew how to play a good character. Thank goodness Blake Clark was a friend of his or else Disney Pixar might've considered never giving Slinky a major role again.

Jim as he's the original but Blake is good too.

Both have done a really good job performing the voice, but Varney just barely wins.

I like both! I can't really tell the difference. Blake was close friends with Jim and think Jim would have been happy that Blake filled in for him.

Both were great, and Blake Clark sounds a LOT like Jim Varney! But Jim Varney is who originated the character, so I guess I choose him.
