Fozzie Bear

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Fozzie Bear with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Muppets

Wocka wocka! Fozzie Bear is one of the most prominent supporting characters in Jim Henson's The Muppets franchise. As his name suggests, he is a fuzzy bear. But more important than that, Fozzie is an aspiring comedian with the incredible gift of having no comedic talent. At least, according to his audience. Perpetually upbeat, his best friend, Kermit, can always turn to Fozzie for advice.

For the, more or less, first half of Fozzie's career, Muppeteer Frank Oz performed the blithe bruin. Obviously, Frank set the stage for Fozzie's portrayal, and there's not much more I can say about that, ha ha.

Greg Berg got a brief stint as Fozzie in the mid-80s, playing both the young and standard-aged Fozzie. Greg's portrayal is a little higher-pitched than usual, but is still a very good voice for Fozzie.

For the latter portion of Fozzie's mainstream career, Eric Jacobson took over from Frank Oz (as he did with several other characters, too).  Eric took what Frank created and improved on it. His voice is a tad deeper than Frank's, which is something I enjoy.

In the Muppet Babies series from 2018, known-impressionist Eric Bauza gets behind the wheel (the vocal wheel, that is) to portray Fozzie in his younger days. Eric's baby Fozzie voice is good, but there's just a little something that I'm not quite clicking with. I can't quite place my finger on it, but I'm hearing bits of Dr. Nick and I can't unhear that.

In the end, this is how they rank for me:

1.) Eric Jacobson
2.) Frank Oz
3.) Eric Bauza
4.) Greg Berg

1. Frank. Originated and perfected the character. He absolutely nailed the "hapless wannabe comedian" aspects, and worked well for serious scenes as well.

2. Eric. Not quite as impressed with his Fozzie as I am with his other Frank roles; to me, it just feels like a pale impression, and feels a tad stilted at times. It's missing that natural, effortless delivery that Frank brought to him. I don't hate his Fozzie; it's good, just not as good as Frank's.

3. Greg. Again, it's a good Frank impression, but it's still lacking that natural feel, this time even more so than Eric. Also, he seems to be doing the exact same voice for Baby and Adult Fozzie, which is weird. Works a lot better for Baby than adult, though.

Speaking of, Greg easily wins the Baby Fozzie compare. The MB reboot seems to be having a really rough time with their voice matching. I know Eric's an incredibly talented VA, and I'm sure if he wanted to, he could replicate Frank's Fozzie perfectly; but what he's doing right now just sounds super weird and only sort of Fozzie-like. And as Tyler alluded to, I am hearing hints of a vaguely foreign accent, which is very distracting.

I like Frank and Eric about the same, but I'm giving the edge to Eric.

Frank Oz is a classic in this role. Greg Berg sounds more like Kermit than Fozzie Bear. Eric Jacobson has a solid voice for Fozzie as well.

Eric Bauza shows why he's known as a solid impressionist for the good part of a decade, but it sounds off in places. More consistent than the likes of other VA's known for doing impressions though.

If I had to choose, I would vote for Frank. But everyone else here is really good regardless.
