Paul Phoenix

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Paul Phoenix with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Tekken

Paul Phoenix is a hot-blooded American martial artist and biker who is determined to become the strongest fighter in the universe. Paul is one of the only characters to appear in every Tekken game, and he is best friends with Marshall Law and Steve Fox. Over time, Paul has become more and more of a comic-relief type character.

They all do a great job at making Paul sound like a cocky tough-guy. Eric and Mike are a bit younger-sounding than I'd like considering Paul is in his 40s, but they aren't bad at all. Of the three, Jamieson Price is my favourite because I liked his deep, gruff voice. Very fitting for the character.

 1 Shout Out!
Is it just me, or did Jamieson Price sound a bit like a rambunctious David Lodge in this clip?

They all sound good to me, but Eric Kelso gets my vote.

The ideal voice for Paul, in my opinion, would be a mix between Price and McFarland

After listening to the ending movies from Tekken 6 which have Paul Phoenix in them, I'm fully convinced it's Jamieson Price. As for the battle grunts for Paul in Tekken 6 it's Eric Kelso. Mostly due to the fact that most of the battle grunts were carried over from previous games.

1) Jamieson Price
2) Eric Kelso
3) Mike McFarland

All three VAs manage to boast performances that suit Paul's personality (post-Tekken 2) extremely well. I'll give this one to Jamieson for sounding a bit more age-appropriate, overall. I also tend to hear a lot of his take in my head more than the other two.

After listening to the sound clip from Tekken 6 a few times, I think I agree with NCZ that it is Jamieson Price. Even listening to a couple of the battle grunts it sounds like Price. If only there were actual game credits for 6. We would have definite proof on which people voiced these characters.

So Paul was voiced by Jamieson Price & not Mallow huh? Interesting.

@Shaun Ince It's unconfirmed but on a second listen, he sounds more like Price so that's what I'm leaning toward for now. There's a lot of stuff on the Tekken pages I need to get sorted out.

@NCZ The one problem with the Tekken games is that the cast is not credited. Making it even harder to figure out some of the voices.

@Shaun Ince Yeah, which is why I'm really dreading the day I get around to doing my pass-through of the series (along with the literal hundreds of other game pages I've worked on). I've been aware of which Tekken credits are possibly problematic for a while now, but for various reasons I've never been able to afford dedicating a ton of time to doing in-depth research and investigation.

And the lack of credits is so weird because Tekken games don't even list the Japanese voice actors! 4 and 5 are the ONLY games in the series that actually had cast credits (and 5's are apparently incomplete, since Cup of Tea's involvement is confirmed and we know the likes of Crispin Freeman and Dave Mallow are involved but uncredited). The first three and Tag Tournament are especially tricky because apparently they use a mixture of professional voice actors and Namco employees.

I love Tekken as a game, but finding out voice info is nothing short of a logistical nightmare. I've tried bugging Harada on twitter about some of the credits but I've never got a response, lol. Maybe I'll just try harder... he actually has responded to a few other VA-related tweets and that's how we got confirmation that he voiced Marshall Law or that Kenichi Morizumi voiced Dragunov (and not Tessho Genda as many English sites led fans to believe).

@NCZ That is pretty cool that Harada voiced Marshall Law back then. I was never aware that Tekken 4 & 5 had cast credits. Probably because I skipped the ending credits scene whenever it came up xD!
I could only imagine what it would be like in your position trying to find these voice actors for these Tekken games. I probably would have gone insane. Kazuya was credited as being voiced by Morikawa on various other fan made sites, which definitely wasn't true. I honestly have no idea how that rumor even got started in the first place.

@Shaun Ince

Implying I'm not already insane? Ha ha, thanks for the support though.

Kidding aside, the Morikawa rumour always bugged me but I think I know where it came from. Morikawa did Hwoarang's battle voices in Tekken 3 and 4 and was credited in the latter. I'm guessing at the time people saw his name in the credits and assumed he was Kazuya, for whatever reason. He does sound a bit like Morikawa when he's grunting, but Kazuya's actual dialogue is another story.

I remember when the Blood Vengeance cast was announced, that was the first time a few of the Japanese voice actors were properly credited for their roles. People were annoying Harada on twitter by asking him, "WTF, why couldn't you get Toshiyuki Morikawa to be Kazuya again!?!?" and he had to explain that Masanori Shinohara was always Kazuya's VA. After that the rumour died off for good.

I still think the worst VO-related rumour in the series is the one that states John DiMaggio voiced Marduk in Tekken 6. There's not a single shred of credibility to it and yet it's spread like butter on a bagel. Which I foolishly believed at the time, when I wasn't nearly as familiar with non-union/uncredited/Cup of Tea games. SFXTK retroactively allowed a few other credits from that game to be figured out (the big one being David Jeremiah as Wulong) so TJ Storm having always voiced him seems a safe assumption (especially in light of his involvement in Soulcalibur V), but I don't know if it's totally confirmed yet. I'm starting to lean into tangent territory, though.

My mind is already in the Tekken groove, so while we're on the subject, I'll also add that the primary reason why Tekken 7's page hasn't been updated yet is the lack of cast credits as well as the fact that many characters reuse battle grunts from previous Tekken games, leading to inconsistencies.

An example of the type of inconsistency I'm referring to: In Tag 2, Lili's grunts are Joy Jacobson's from 5 and 6, but all of her spoken dialogue is Laura Blanc. Crediting Joy Jacobson when she's not the one who recorded the new material would feel kind of... "dishonest" or misleading, in a way. Not technically wrong, but at the same time it doesn't quite sit right with me and comes off as confusing to the unfamiliar.

@NCZ I remember the John DiMaggio rumor that spread like wildfire. While at the same time, I could understand why people would have thought DiMaggio voiced him. Both Nealy's & Storms voices for Marduck sounded very similar to DiMaqggio's.

@NCZ Are you still unsure about Paul's voice in Tag 2? I just checked out his ending cutscene and it still sounds like Jamieson Price to me.

@Nightmare Crusher Yeah, I think it's Price in everything from 6 on. I was going to look more in-depth in the series later but I ended up skimming Japanese wikipedia while looking for information on other stuff and using that as a potential point of reference to see if there's anything worth looking into.

It's blatantly obvious Price in Tag 2 with more to say. It was just in 6 that that charismatic draw heard from the likes of McConnohie, Price, Mallow, etc. wasn't all too developed.

I think the "BRING IT ON" line in Eric Kelso's clip is actually Dave Mallow. Both are credited as playing him in that particular game, and that one line sounds more like the Mallow clip than like anything else in the Kelso clip.

I vote for Eric voice! It is perfect to Paul! So brash and arrogant! Oh, I'm ready to listen to him forever! Even recorded on my player *ะพ*

By the way, in TTT2 Paul voiced by another artist who is not represented here:

@NCZ Hmm, interesting... In any case, his voice and voice of Eric - the best voices for Paul! I can not choose between the two, they are both so cool and badass! *v*

I understand that Eric voiced Paul from T4 to T5 and Phoenix's gameplay in Tekken 6. And Dave voiced the ending of Paul in T6 and his gameplay and ending in TTT2?
NCZ (Admin)

@Anna Phoenix Correct, though I think in TTT2 the fight sounds in gameplay are still Eric; I believe they're the same as in 5 and 6.

@NCZ Maybe... But Paul's TTT2 voice in gameplay too different from the T4-T6. However, it is still good) Although I voted for Eric, he is more accustomed to me))

@NCZ how did you find out it wasn't Dave Mallow? If Price voiced him in Tekken 6, why isn't he credited for TTT2?

I'm more familiar with Eric Kelso's Paul, so I vote in accordance to that.

But Mike McFarland's voice really does fit Paul too, so I can't complain.
