Kazuya Mishima

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Kazuya Mishima with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Tekken

Kazuya is one of the main characters in the Tekken series, consistently appearing in the lineup for every game except Tekken 3. Heihachi, his father, decided to test his son's worth by throwing Kazuya off a cliff. Kazuya deeply resents him for this. He is also the father of Jin Kazama. Although Kazuya started out as a cookie-cutter hero, he has since developed into one of the series' main villains.

EDITOR'S OPINION

Adam and Kyle are both quite good at bringing out Kazuya's sinister side. However, I think Jordan might be my favourite. His voice sounds dark, low, and provides the right amount of toughness.

Kyle Herbert feels miscast here, especially with his accent. I don't feel like it sounds neutral enough for a Japanese character like Kazuya. Also, I find that pronunciation of Jin (jean) to be a very odd choice.

Jordan Byrne is definitely the best attempt we've had so far although even he seems to be lacking something.

Someone commented on Jin Kazama's voice compare that Darren Daniels would be a better fit for Kazuya and I would agree with that.

@NitroEX "Also, I find that pronunciation of Jin (jean) to be a very odd choice."

It's not just a thing with Kazuya, that's how everyone in the movie pronounces Jin. It's how the name is supposed to be pronounced.

@Nightmare Crusher I'm aware that the actors were told to say it that way but it's still jarring to me nonetheless. I haven't seen the film myself but I have played the games all throughout my life and the way I've always pronounced it is closer to the word Gin rather than Jean. The official games support this pronunciation as well as evidenced by the character select screens:
https://youtu.be/gmeDK1rKQX4?t=10s

I've seen no evidence of jean being the correct pronunciation.

@NitroEX The problem there is you're using the English speaking announcer. Just as an example, here's how Ling Ziaoyu's Japanese actress says it.

@Nightmare Crusher I dunno, in that particular example I feel as though the word has just been elongated for dramatic effect. Characters often stretch words out in tense moments for this reason.

I can also find examples from the Japanese dialogue that support my way of pronouncing it.

https://youtu.be/TgPfc1ji6Xs?t=59s
https://youtu.be/tyc0sN8fDSw?t=7m15s

It's also worth considering that if the English version did mispronounce the name wouldn't Namco make sure to correct the error in future games? The English pronunciation has been kept consistent in different iterations.

@NitroEX She says it multiple times in that cutscene and it always sounds like Gene/Jean.

I'm still hearing the ee sound in those examples, particularly the last one. It isn't as pronounced as in Blood Vengeance though, likely an issue with Japanese phonetics not exactly matching up with what's expected in English.

As for it not being corrected, I get the feeling it amounts to apathy on Namco's part. Plenty of companies will just farm out the English voice acting to dubbing companies without much of a care. Just as an example, Dynasty Warriors got away with this crap for years.

@NitroEX

The actors in Blood Vengeance were (presumably) directed to approximate the Japanese pronunciation of Jin. To an English speaker reading it in their own accent they would pronounce it like "gin", because they're reading it from an English perspective and that's what makes most sense to a native speaker of that language. But in Japanese the pronunciation of "Ji" is more like a slightly-abrupter "jee" sound. Obviously it's tough for anyone to nail the pronunciation of a language they don't natively speak but in general the pronunciation in Blood Vengeance is more of an attempt at authenticity toward the original language.

Now that I think about it, after rewatching the Tekken Motion Picture I think Adam Dudley is not too bad in this role. Comes the closest to how Kazuya should sound in English. At least to me. Kyle & Jordan just don't cut it for me.

Eh, none of them are really how I envision Kazuya to sound, but Jordan Byrne comes closest to it. If I had to pick a voice for Kazuya my picks would be either Chris Sabat or maybe Paul Dobson if Ocean ever gets a chance to do anything Tekken Related.

If Japanese VA's were included in most of these compares, I'd think the votes would be pretty different. As for the English voices for Kazuya, they are all hit or miss. These guys are no Shinohara Masanori. BTW has it been truly confirmed that Joji Nakata played Kazuya in Tekken 1 2 & Tag Tournament 1?

1.) Kyle- Best performance out of all of them IMO.
2.) Adam- His voice was great, but his performance was really hit or miss.
3.) Jordan- Kind of "eh". Like Adam's it was hit or miss, but on a lower scale. Then again, the game itself didn't give him much room to improve seeing as how little dialogue he got.
Overall they all did a pretty good job.

Adam Dudley: He's definitely got that voice that could sound like a man who has fallen to darkness.
Kyle Hebert: It just sounds odd with his voice coming out of Kazuya. When I think of Kazuya, I don't think Hebert.
Jordan Byrne: Now we are getting somewhere. I can feel the coldness in his voice, but it's still not clicking with me.

Byrne is ahead by only THAT much. For now he's my top pick.

@Ovarku It's mainly the accent against him I find, plus one or two lines which really just... didn't sound right but yeah, on the right track.

For what it's worth about Kyle, performed him the best.

and Adam has the best sounding voice of the bunch. Somewhere there's a perfect voice porformance here.

Mix in Adam's timbre, Kyle's Performance and Jordan's style, you'll get........... Kevin Conroy.

.......................... I can't get invested with any of these guys. Adam's bland. Kyle's voice doesn't match (though his performance was good) and Jordan sounds like a country star.

If it were up to me, I'd have cast either Paul Dobson or Kevin Conroy as Kazuya.

Yeah. I think Sabat modified his Piccolo voice to be more menacing and arrogant, he'd be a natural fit as Kazuya.

Jordan. He sounds dark, sophisticated (which makes sense, since Kazuya's also a business man), and tough when need be. He also doesn't overdo it on the gruffness (something I feel is holding Adam back). So Jordan, Kyle, then Adam.

When I watched the movie, I thought Kyle Hebert and Patrick Seitz should have been switched around. Their voices don't really match the characters' faces.

Haven't heard Adam Dudley's performance to judge, but that voice is more appropriate.
Ninjaman15
said at 3:40 AM on Tue Nov 22 2011
@ConfusedPhantom I have to agree, man. Granted that it was still a great performance from the marvelous man himself, Kyle Hebert (Adult Gohan, Ryu, Kamina), I think this is one of his more obscure and rather "sidetracked" roles. And yes, they should've had opposite voice acting as well: Patrick Seitz as Kazuya and Kyle Hebert as Jin.

I'm also giving credit to Capcom at least when they didn't give Heihachi, Kazuya, Yoshimitsu an English voice so far on Street Fighter X Tekken. Please don't ask why, though...
NCZ (Admin)
said at 7:02 AM on Tue Nov 22 2011
Really? I don't think Kyle would fit Jin at all. I'd expect him to have a smooth voice, not a more gruff one.
Ninjaman15
said at 6:12 PM on Tue Nov 22 2011
@NCZ What about Crispin Freeman? Or Matthew Mercer? Maybe my recommendations for who should've voiced Jin in English don't matter all that much anyway, seeing how from what I've heard, the dubbing for Blood Vengeance was average to mediocre at best.

But whatever you do, please DON'T mention the Black Ranger who replaced Zack!
ConfusedPhantom
said at 10:36 PM on Tue Nov 22 2011
@NCZ I thought Patrick Seitz's voice was more gruff than Kyle's was. Don't get me wrong, the performance wasn't bad. It's just Kyle's voice sounds younger than Seitz is. And Seitz's voice feels big in comparison. And that's what Kazuya's voice should be...big and hateful. Kyle's voice makes him sound like a loner and coming from Kazuya it isn't very interesting.

@Ninjaman15 Yeah, Matthew Mercer would be a pretty good Jin. But, yeah....these guys probably won't become the official VAs any time soon. ...I thought Jamieson Price as Heihachi wasn't bad though. I wouldn't mind him being in the games.
Aussieroth
said at 6:03 AM on Sun Dec 4 2011
@ConfusedPhantom That's what I think too. Another thing I think of, besides the switch, is Crispin Freeman as Kazuya and Troy Baker as Jin.

I can't vote for either of these two to be honest. Kyle has the better performance, but Adam has the more suiting voice. A genuine 50-50.
