My Top Three:
1) Barry Gordon: The original, and the best.
2) Anthony Salerno: I really have to give him credit, because a lot of the '87 characters didn't sound like the original, but he did! Very good choice! I can't believe they chose an awesome choice for Donatello and a bad choice for Leonardo.
3) Rob Paulsen: His voice sounds a little too much like himself, but still an awsome choice. It sounds a lot like Barry Gordon, but slightly gravelly and a little older.

"BAM! System Disabled! Who Wants Italian tonight? I'm Buying! Tiramisu for Everybody!"

Donatello has always been my Favourite Turtle since my introduction to the franchise..... partly because he has a mask with my favourite Colour (Purple)....... though as time has gone I actually find I relate to him the most.....

Anyway here are my Top 5 Favourite Voice For Him:

5. Mitchell Whitfield
4. Adam Carl
3. Yuri Lowenthal
2. Gavin Hammon
1. Sam Riegal

Future VA Suggestions:

Following on from another commente'rs mention of Donatello being the "Mr Spock" of the Turtles, perhaps Zachary Quinto could work in the part?

I'm also thinking Vic Mignogna would be solid as Donatello, using a similar voice to his Edward Elric or Yukito Kunisaki

I also recommend Josh Hutcherson, Cameron Bowen, Alessandro Juliani and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

I guess most of us here are in the same boat with concerns to Sam Rigel being our favorite turtle in purple.

Dude just nails it and whenever I read TMNT comics I read Donatello as him. Special mention to Rob Paulsen Adam Carl and Yuri Lowenthal.

I'm not sure how anyone else feels, but I always preferred the voices for Donny that sounded more...normal.

We get that he's the brains of the team, so I always felt that his voice didn't have to be one that's stereotypical geek/nerd.

My problems with Barry Gordon, Rob Paulsen, and especially Jeremy Howard is that they seem to focus too much on that one aspect of Don's personality and come off as a little one-note.

My personal favorite is Sam Riegel as I always felt he was able to be intelligent without sounding like a nerd, but was also able to show off Donatello's kind-hearted and pacifistic nature (another of my issues with Paulsen's version, although that's more the direction than the character).

Gavin Hammon and Adam Carl come pretty close to Sam. Mitchell's got the voice, but his acting was kinda flat and monotone at times.

Barry's a lot of fun. He's got this charming and geeky voice and his delivery is also very good.

Greg is also pretty okay. True I think his voice doesn't have the same charisma as Barry, but he does decently enough

Corey has an incredibly distinct voice for Donnie and I think it works very well. He's got this good youthful sound along with his distinct rasp with oddly enough works very well I think, and is also able to make him sound intelligent all at the same time.

Adam is okay. Nothing amazingly standout about him, but nothing horrible either, just an average voice and performance

Eric is very average. I do think it's a little too high, but overall it's just meh.

Richard is way too distractingly old and deep sounding I feel. Also it doesn't help that his singing isn't really that amazing.

Jason is a little too young sounding I feel for Donnie being 18 in that show. It's not horrible but like Eric, there's nothing standout about it at all.

the UVA sounds like it'd fit Raphael more than Donnie. The acting is also pretty stiff and sometimes the comedic dialogue comes off as very awkward.

Sam has this good intellectual sound but something about him sounds a little too....normal. I don't know something about it never clicked with me for some reason. The acting is decent and the voice is decent, but something about it also just never really sounded right to me (though that's most of the 03 cast to be honest)

Mitchell's delivery is well done and he does get some good quick and intelligent delivery when the scene calls for it.

Christopher didn't have very much to go off of but from what I here it's okay.

Anthony is one of the few voice replacements in Turtles Forever that I actually thought worked very well. He does well with trying to emulate Barry's sound without being a straight impression and he does a great job. Honestly, I think I like him a little more than Barry since I think Anthony does a little bit of a better job at sounding youthful and energetic.

Rob is a ton of fun. He has the intelligent delivery, he has the comedic delivery down incredibly well, just everything about his performance is incredibly well done. I do admit I was skeptical about a past turtle playing another different turtle, but Rob honestly I think did better here than he did as Raphael.

Yuri was a very good choice for Donnie and I feel he did a great job doing the smart, geeky dialogue, but I feel they didn't really do enough with Donnie in that game to make Yuri do anything standout.

Jeremy is a bit high but his comedic delivery is very good and he has this great wimpy and slight nasal that works well for the type of character they made Donnie in the film

Oliver I think is a little too old sounding. It's not horrible, but I do feel the voice is a little too distracting due to the fact he sounds like a 40 year old man.

Gavin does a great job here. He has the light voice and is able work off the other characters in the game very well, even getting a few good comedic lines every so often.

1. Rob Paulsen
2. Gavin Hammon
3. Anthony Salerno
4. Barry Gordon
5. Corey Feldman
6. Jeremy Howard
7. Mitchell Whitfield
8. Sam Riegel
9. Greg Berg
10. Yuri Lowenthal
11. Adam Carl
12. Christopher C. Adams
13. Jason Gray Stanford
14. Eric Anzalone

17. Richard Berg

I'd say for a future VA I'd go for Dee Baker or Wil Wheaton

 5 Shout Outs!
1. Gavin Hammon
Gavin has really good dry and matter-of-factly delivery, without sounding motone or bored. He also does excellent job at sounding intelligent, without going for nerdy - voice. Gavin really makes Donatello feel like Mr. Spock of the team.

2. Sam Riegel
Sam's take also has really convincingly wise - tone to his voice and he sells Donnie's more neurotic moments really well.

3. Barry Gordon
Barry doesn't sound at all like a teenager, but his voice and delivery make up for it. His voice does have geeky - quality to it, but it doesn't go overboard and instead adds certain charm to the character. Plus, he does sell those meaningless technobabbles like a champ.

4. Mitchell Whitfield
Mitchell is in a lot of ways similar to Sam Riegel, and also gives really good performance. Unfortunately, he doesn't get much to work with, since Leo and Raph were only turtles who had a story-arcs in the movie, so he doesn't get a chance to truly shine. Would love to see him reprise the role someday.

5. Rob Paulsen
From everyone here who is doing exaggerated "nerd voice" (my personal pet peeve), Rob is the best. I think that it's because he does have the right balance. He knows when to sound really nerdy and when to tone it down. It never gets too annoying or noticeable.

6. Greg Berg
Pretty darn close Gordon impersonation. He is little bit more nasally than Gordon and doesn't have the same energy, but good impersonation nonetheless.

7. Adam Carl
This is going to be controversial, but I feel that Adam was better Donatello than Feldman, for reasons that I will elaborate on once I get to him. Adam isn't perfect or anything, but the voice and perfromance are suitable enough for the role.

8. Christopher C. Adams
Chirstopher is one of the hardest Mirage Turtles to judge, since Donnie has probably changed the most from the franchise's early days. Christopher does good job as grim crime fighter and, to his credit, he does make his voice softer than the other Mirage Turtles, so is easier to buy him as the brains of the team.

9. Corey Feldman
I know that I lot of people really like Feldman in the role, but I just don't feel that he fits. One of the few major flaws of the movie was that Donatello was pretty much written as "Michelangelo - lite", so Felman doesn't get so showcase any of Donnie's usual personality traits. He isn't awful (he doesn't ruin the movie or anything) and he did get to do some "science-talk" in the third movie, but that was too little too late.

10. Oliver Vaquer
Oliver is probably the stand-out turtle from the game. His voice does have nice brainy - tone to it, which fits the character. Unfortunately, his delivery is very awkward and the way he emphasizes some of his lines is just weird. Close, but no cigar.

11. Yuri Lowenthal
Like everyone else in the game, Yuri isn't awful, but he is very bland and forgettable. Shame, since I'm sure that he could have made fine Donatello.

12. Anthony Salerno
Anthony does really good Gordon impersonation, but Donatello easily suffered the most from all of the 87's Turtles, when it came to flanderization and out-of-character writing. He hardly ever feels like the brains of the team and when he does get to do something scientific, the writers have to undermine it by adding something goofy (like not knowing the difference between hammer and wrench).

13. Jason Gray Stanford/Unknown
Both are really generic "TMNT voices" and don't really fit Donnie.

14. Eric Anzalone
I guess going very high and nasally was Eric's attempt to make Donnie sound like the nerd of the group. It really doesn't work and gets really annoying really fast.

15. Richard Berg
Great singing, doesn't fit Donatello. At all.

16. Jeremy Howard
I'm going to be very blunt here. I despise this take on Donatello! It's such a stereotypical "loser nerd" - voice and performance, that it's like something straight from a really bad and clich├ęd high school drama. It really does feel more like a caricature or parody of the character, rather than something that we are supposed to take seriously. I'm not mad at Jeremy, since he only did what he was asked to do. I'm mad at Jonathan Liebesman, Michael Bay and everyone else making the creative decisions for the movie. All the other iterations of the franchise were able to showcase that Donatello was the nerd of the group just fine by being subtle about it, but you just had to underestimate your audience and hammer it in (and this goes beyond the voice performance).

I'm not gonna bother with a ranking list for this one. I'll just say Sam Riegal is my favorite. I love how he sounds geeky, but not in a way where he sounds exaggerated or like a cartoon. Instead of sounding like a geek, he sounds like a normal guy who just happens to be a really smart, if that makes any sense.

Barry Gordon and Rob Paulsen are both great too, especially for what they do. But they both sound like they're trying to sound nerdy instead of just having that natural quality to their voices like Riegal does.

Mitchell Whitfield sounds like he's doing an impression of Riegal, and it's not bad either.

Barry Gordon is Donatello!!! I mean, thanks to his performance, Donnie became my favorite Turtle. He sounds nerdy, youthful and he's also pretty funny. His techno-babble is pretty enjoyable.

Corey Feldman is also pretty awesome. Even though he doesn't get a lot of chances to show his nerdy side, he really managed to be pretty entertaining.

Adam Carl is also pretty boss. A nice replacement for Feldman in the second flick.

Greg Berg does a really good impression of Barry Gordon. His delivery is pretty similar to that of Gordon.

Rob Paulsen is also pretty enjoyable. Really awesome to see that he got a chance to play another Turtle.

Sam Riegel, Mitchell Whitfield, Anthony Salerno and Yuri Lowenthal also deliver good performances.

Jason Gray Stanford and Jeremy Howard are okay, but not that memorable.

Christopher C. Adams is pretty unremarkable.

I like Sam t, but I'm actually gonna change to Barry, and tie him with Sam, Rob, Mitchell, and Jeremy. I got into TMNT with 2003 series so those kind of voices/performances are my preference at least for 3 of the the 4 turtles and in this case Barry laid the foundation for how Donny should sound and all the mentioned actors are great successors.

All the rest are just decent impressions or not quite Donny.

Most of them seem to have a similar higher-pitched, almost nasally voice and nerdy attitude, so I'm not sure if one performance really sticks out over the other. People say that Jeremy's nasally tone is super over-the-top, but really, I'm not hearing anything 'worse' than Barry's or Anthony's. Besides, it's not like it's Sid the Sloth or Gilbert Gottfried levels of "exaggeration".

Behaviour, voice and appearance all work in tandem to sell a character, and I think this is a pretty good example. In the end, my top three would probably be Rob, Jason and Jeremy.

Also, I dig the designs of the 2014 flick. More power to them for wanting to spice up the designs with some visual interest, besides different coloured headbands. Broken glasses seem a bit cliche, so my only wish was that they actually DID something with them - like having them continually break or drop off his face. Could even allow for some physical gags when he's fighting.

At his (& Liam O'Brien's) panel at Bak-Anime 2013, Sam Riegel revealed that he auditioned for the 2012 TMNT series. Although, he did't re-audition for Donatello (nor did he audition for any other turtle, for that matter). Specifically, he auditioned for Shredder.

Here are my two lists...

1. Barry Gordon/Adam Carl
2. Jason Gray Stanford
3. Corey Feldman/Greg Berg

Barry's work as Don is a rather iconic part of his voice career as his voice and performance suited the show's comedic style and Don's intellectual persona well enough. Adam's work suited Don's intellectual persona well as it was suitably dramatic as Don wants to know more about his family's past but still has a good sense of humor as well. Jason's work was rather good as it is one of the better VA performances in that show. Granted Jason's voice for the role is basically his Yusaku Godai/Kento of the Hard Rock voice but it does work well as his performance suited Don's intellectual persona. Coredy Feldman was rather funny in the role as his performance was energetic and had a good sense of personality but it didn't quite suite Don's intellectual persona that much. Greg Berg does a pretty good attempt at trying to sound like Barry but it was by no means a perfect impression.

1. Sam Riegel
2. Rob Paulsen
3. Mitchell Witfield/Yuri Lowenthal
4. Anthony Salerno
5. Christopher C Adams

Sam was just perfect in role in the role as his voice and performance suited Don's intellectual persona perfectly. As for Rob I admit I still find it a little strange to hear 80s Raph as Don but Rob delivers a funny and spirited performance that suited the role well. Mithcell was pretty good as his performance suited the role pretty well as while Don had less screentime than the others Mitchell does deliver an amusing performance nevertheless. As for Yuri while I do kind of picture him as Leo more but it Yuri's performance did suit Donny's calm and intellectual persona pretty well. Anthony's attempt to do a performance like Barry was pretty good as it was a decent attempt to sound like Barry. (Athony's Donatello was not as good as Sebastian's Raph voice but was better than Dan and Johnny's Leo and Mikey voices). Christopher was... decent but rather generic.

For the original series, Barry Gordon was pretty good, even if he sounded a bit too old and cartoonish, and maybe a little nerdy. Of course, that's probably just because of how cheesy and campy the 80's series was, as well as weak voice direction. Regardless, he still did a fine job with what he had to work with, and I'm sure he'd do well if he were to voice Donatello in a more modern incarnation. That said, Greg Berg does a good imitation of Barry's voice, though he came off as a bit awkward.

Sam Riegel is a natural choice for the role, he sounds very young, really intelligent, and interesting to listen to. His acting was also top-notch. Granted, he has the advantage of voicing Donny much longer than the others, and ended up being rather typecast afterwards, but I suppose I can't really hold either of those things against him. He's still very well-casted nonetheless, and it's not hard to see why Donny is probably Sam's most notable role in his voice-over career.

Out of all the movie voices, Mitchell Whitfield is the best. He's also age-appropriate, and his acting is pretty good. The only problem with his performance is that it's a bit bland, though that's probably just because he didn't have a whole lot to work with. Adam Carl is decent, but his voice sounds kind of off. I don't care for any of the other movie voices, though none of them are flat-out terrible I suppose.

Rob Paulsen sounds too perky, and his voice is a bit weird, but it works for a younger Donny. As with most of the other voices from the 2012 series, he's better than I thought he'd be, but it takes at least some time to get used to. He's one of the best voice actors in American animation though, and I'm sure that he'll improve over time (depending on how much longer the 2012 series lasts, that is).

Yuri Lowenthal is a natural (if not typecast) choice for Donatello, he not only sounds age-appropriate, but gave him a bit of a sarcastic edge and a little attitude. I actually wish they'd have used him in the 2012 series, he'd definitely grow into the role seamlessly over time (not that Paulsen is bad though, it's just a thought).

Overall, I'd say he's probably my second favorite, after Sam Riegel of course.

 1 Shout Out!
To me it's a tie between Reigel and Paulsen, mostly because Reigel captures the traditional pacifistic Donnie, while Paulsen captures the idea that if Donnie's genius would make him irritable at the less intelligent world around him.

OK, this is a toughy because he's my character! Obviously my favorite turtle since I first saw the series in 1991.

My votes go to:
4. Adam Carl - besides paying homage to the older cast, his acting in the movie was good. I enjoyed the performance first and foremost.

3. Rob Paulsen - basically because the of the script he was given. He bleeds techno-geek in that series and I love it!

2. Sam Riegel - While I didn't follow the series in 2003, the blurb left me a strong impression. I could see him as Donny.

1. Mitchell Whitfield - I loved his performance in the newest movie, and he left the strongest impression of them all for me.

I haven't seen the 1987 series, so I have no problem with Rob Paulsen voicing Donny. He gets my vote.

Barry Gordon/Greg Berg - Very cartoony, but thats what the show was. Overall, they did a good job.
Sam Riegel/Mitchelle Whitfield - They sound the most natural, and like I said, the TMNT cast is my favorite.
Rob Paulsen - I was uncertain with every single cast member this show had at first. But Rob really does a good job. People get mad that they got him back but didn't voice Raphael, but Robs voice wouldn't fit his personality anymore.

Man it is SO weird hearing Rob Paulsen as Donatello after him being Raph for so long in the original series...

My top picks for Donny are Sam Riegel, Rob Paulsen, Mitchell Whitfield, and Corey Feldman.

Paulsen works with Don....but I keep thinking 90s Raph. lol Barry Gordon and Sam Riegel are still my favorites.

@ConfusedPhantom That's exactly what I think every time I hear Rob as Donny. It's strange. I suppose it works, but I'm just prejudiced from being an 80's / 90's kid.

@Joop Well, 9 episodes in, and I'm actually starting warm up to it. I actually really like him as Donny now. Maybe moreso than Raph.

I think its kinda cool that Rob Paulsen, the voice actor for Raphael in the 1987 series, is now the voice actor for Donatello in the 2012 series.

Like Sean Astin's Raphael Rob's Donatello reminds me of Sam Riegel a bit but I'll stick with the actual Sam Riegel.

While Corey Feldman had funnier lines I felt Adam Carl was more appropriate for Don in the movies, which is 1 of the few good things I can say about TMNT 2. This character is a great example of Sam Riegel's career as a VA. Mitchell Whitfield is good, but not memorable. I was never really fan of Barry Gordon's voice, sorry.

Donny is my least favorite of the turtles (strange seeing as he's the one i have the most in common with). but i loved his 2003 voice given by Sam Riegel. Barry Gordon and Corey Feldman follow close behind. While i do like the voice of Mitchell Whitfield, i don't think it fits Don's character.

Sam Riegel is the best Donatello voice He made Donatello sound more Wise,Smart and Intellegient with That strong confident voice he brought in with a fluent tone filled with Enthusiasm,Activeness,Power and strength with a Clear structure and relaxed explanations fusing them together which make His Donny voice Special and Unique in his own way Sam really takes the upper hand here he nailed Donatello's personality IMO fits the character more

I like Pete Capella's Dark version of Donatello it speaks in a different way from Same xcept again more darker, serious and still listenable I never knew Pete could transform his voice into different tones like this it's incredible a lot different from his Silver voice :)...and Anthony Salerno didn't do a bad job either it sounds more younger and the voice reminds me of his other performances and even sounds similar to The Character he voiced in Sonic Unleashed Chip (Light Gaia)

As for the rest I didn't like them as much as Sam

Sam was the best Donny voice In my opinion.

@Truesonic Based on your comments and votes it seems to boil down to the fact that you just like the 2003 version better (probably grew up on it). Seems kind of unrealistic to really think that every 2003 version was the best voice though don't you think?
said at 7:38 PM on Mon Apr 4 2011

Oh no...I have heard a few old voice actors before the 2003 ones and I admit I do like most of the 2003 voice actors but not all of them I know they weren't perfect and all needed improvement I just strangely liked them more for some reason I'm sure the olds ones did a good job back then in the past I thought differently earlier but now that I think about it I kinda like the Other Generation better I didn't mean to be uptight here and don't get me wrong I don't hate the old ones In the past I thought others were better back then but now...I had a big think about it I apologise if you thought I was being harsh that way :L

I just like some more than others...But hey They created their own versions of the character and brought them to life in a different type of way I guess that's something I can be fair about They all brought different features which worked fine and well just some more than others.

Greg Berg filled in for a few episodes, you can tell thats a different voice, horrible but different :)

Barry Gordon is easily the best for the animated version of Donny. As far as live action I like Corey Feldman the best. I honestly don't even think that Greg wannabe should even be listed Barry Gordon did the entire run of the original cartoon I think.
