Voice Compare » Superman » Superman
Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Superman with sound clips and images.
Superman is an alien (Kryptonian) who was sent to Earth by his parents (Jor-El and Lara) before Krypton was destroyed.
His Kryptonian name is Kal-El and to the world he is Superman, but is also known as The Last Son of Krypton, The Man of Steel and The Man of Tomorrow. His alter-ego is Clark Kent; a journalist for the Daily Planet. His wife is Lois Lane who is also a Daily Planet journalist.
Raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville, Clark was taught the difference between right and wrong from a young age and grew up with strong values and morals.
Under a yellow sun Clark developed abilities that would continue to grow as he matured. Superman is one of the world's greatest super heroes and with his various abilities it's not hard to see why.
Some of Superman's powers include: Flight, Super Strength, Super Speed, Invulnerability, Regeneration, Heat Vision, X-Ray Vision, Freeze Breath, and Super Hearing. Superman is one of the most powerful super heroes of all time but he does have some weaknesses like any hero does.
Some of these weaknesses are: kryptonite (radioactive remains of Krypton), magic, extreme amounts of force/impact from even more powerful beings than himself and if exposed to a red sun he will lose all Kryptonian powers.

I say the best modern ones are Tim Daly, George Newbern, Mark Harnon, Mark Valley, and Nolan North though Nolan's was kind of a jerk to Superboy compared to the Kents he definitely could go into Superman's angry moments well if he got the chance. Out of the classic ones Bud sounds the most convincing.

I know a lot of modern DC fans won't agree with me, but for me, Bud Collyer is and always will be Superman!!!! Mainly thanks to his ability to lower the pitch of his voice whenever Clark Kent became Superman.

@Starscreamsfan Bud Collyer is one of the most fantastic classic performances of any superhero. He was the first, and still one of the best.
Replysaid at 1:07 PM on Sun May 12 2013
@Starscreamsfan As someone who enjoys the voices in the old DC cartoons I actually don't have a problem with that but I do say since Bud's Superman isn't the emotional 3 dimensional hero who goes on about truth, justice, and morality then I say he is the best of the classic voices and Tim and George are the best modern ones.
Replysaid at 8:51 PM on Thu May 16 2013
@pete I think I'll have to agree and disagree with that last aspect. The Fleischer Cartoons really didn't used Collyer that much, so Superman simply rescues people and the fact that he doesn't even have lines in some shorts, doesn't give Collyer any justice. But if we talk about the old time radio show, Collyer delivers very powerful acting both as Clark Kent and as Superman.

Replysaid at 5:41 PM on Thu May 23 2013
@Starscreamsfan I think a variety of different opinions is good for this sight. From what I could gather, most of the members hear (including me) prefer post 90's voices in superheroes (Tim Daly as Superman, Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as Joker). But then I saw your comments and though "wait this guy is picking Superfriends voices." I thought it was a refreshing change of pace. The more opinions we see, the more we fully understand peoples views on these actors, instead of a bunch of us kids just voting for the newest guy. Although I listen to every voice clip, I'm afraid some people disregard the older voices just because they are old. Come on guys, a lot of these actors did great work. Even if they aren't your favorite, they deserve the option to be acknowleged.

George Newbern had greater emotional range and put an undercurrent of pathos and subtle danger into Superman. Tim Daly had pretty much one setting, which was Tim Daly. Both of them are miles above anyone else who DC/WB has tapped for the role in any other adaptation, however.

James Denton. Don't ask me why, everyone else sounded either too sissy or reminded me too much of their performances in other media. I know Denton's known for other things but his voice isn't as recognisable to me as other 'celebrity' Supermans (Supermen?) and I really felt like a man with that voice could lift a car without breaking a sweat, whereas the others didn't sell it for me quite as well.
Now here come the haters.

After much thought, I'm changing my vote to George Newbern, because I believe he gives Superman more of a human side at times than Tim Daly. but they are both good. in fact I think George proved that point in the JLU episode "for the man who has everything"

Tim Daily/George Newborn - Tie. They are awesome.
Adam Baldwin - Good.
Crispin Freeman - Different, but likable.
Kyle MacLachlan - OK, nothing special.
CCS - A little bland, but fine.
Michael Dangerfield - I thought it was George in that cartoon. I`m impressed.
Jeff Kramer - For lack of a better word, too superheroy.
Mark Harmon - He would of bean better as an aged Superman.
David Kaye - I think he can do a serious Superman if he toned down the camp.
Nolan North - Not bad, but not outstanding. Still one of the better ones.
James Denton - I like it.
Roger Rose - Worked for what the show was going for.
Patrick Warburton - I thought parodies weren't aloud in VCs.
Keith Ferguson - He's a good cartoon voice but I can still take him seriously. He doesn't go for that stereotypical superhero voice.
Travis Willingham - Although he does go fore that stereotypical Superman voice, he does it better than others.
Mark Valley - One of the better ones here, I would listen to him more.

Christopher McDonald - Didn't really count him because he's an older version (but for some reason that didn't stop me from doing Mark Valley) but he's OK.
Yuri Lowenthal - Younger version, I watched that show a bit and I liked him in it.
Danny Dark - OK
Beau Weaver - Better than Danny
Brandon Routh - Like his movie performance, a little dull.
Bud Collyer - Awesome as the first Superman voice.
Joseph May - Surprisingly good.
David Lodge - A different version, but good for what they were going for.

I'm not sure, I want to say Tim Daly because he's the first superman and he sounds patriotic which is great for Clark, but then there's George Newbern and he gives Superman an edge. he makes him more human by giving him anger during some episodes of Justice League and Superman vs. the Elite. in fact when I try to mimic Tim's voice in comic books I keep getting George instead.

@SLEDGERAID It was a remake of the original 60's version of the The Fugitive. That show was later made into a 1993 movie with Harrison Ford. The remake series however was canceled after 1 season of 22 episodes and ended in 2001 so bad decision TIm Daly's part which is probably the main reason. why he reprised his role for Brainiac Attacks and Superman/Batman Public Enemies and Superman/Batman Apocalypse.

My favorite Superman voices for years were Tim Daly and Beau Weaver. But I was surprised at how well David Kaye works for me as Superman. Tim Daly is my personal favorite as Superman. I felt he really nailed the character, though George Newbern is a worthy successor. Christopher McDonald also worked as an older Superman. Mark Harmon does sound like a good middle ground between Daly and Newbern, IMO.
Yuri Lowenthal also worked pretty well as a younger Superman/Superboy. I'd like to see him played either a Superboy or Superman again. Adam Baldwin also works well as Superman, as does Crispin Freeman.
James Denton works well as Superman in All-Star Superman. Kyle MacLachlan also worked pretty well as Superman in TNF and Rgoer Rsoe nailed the Silver Age Superman on B: TBatB. David Kaye's Superman also seems inspired by the Silver Age and It hink he works well for that version.
IMO, Nolan North is miscast as both Superman AND Superboy. Hisperformance doesn't work for either of them and it doesn't help that YJ made Superman an uncharacteristic jerk and Superboy a quick to angry emo.

@Anicomicgeek I'm inclined to agree. I've enjoyed Nolan North in other stuff he's done (Ultimate Avengers, Hulk Vs., Crisis on 2 Earths, TMNT) but his voice was a poor fit for Superman, lacking the warmth, power and nobility we expect from Superman. Maybe that isn't fair since the show wrote Superman as a jerk and never gave him or his relationship with Superboy any proper development (and I don't really care about Superboy in any incarnation). I also felt North was miscast as Cyclops as well (who also got written badly on W&TXM). But North will always be an awesome Deadpool. :)

I honestly can't pick *one* voice, most of them are excellent in their own way. Some of my favorites:
Tim Daly and George Newbern- They honestly sound kind of similar in terms of their "hero voice", but Daly and Newbern do a great job in their respective series. Newbern also gets to play around a little more with Superman's anger issues on Justice League/JLU.
Adam Baldwin-For a rougher Superman, Baldwin's voice is a great fit, and he also does a wonderful job of differentiating the original and clone Superman in his acting without really changing the voice.
Kyle MacLachlan- He's got that strange, 50s quality to his voice, which works perfectly for a period piece like New Frontier.
James Denton-Denton has a softer voice than we're used to from Superman, but that fits the more introspective qualities of All-Star Superman, and he still has plenty of authority in it.

Tim Daly done a good job voicing that hero, and became a happy sight for boys alike. George Newbern did the same, and he helped voice the character for him, till he will reprise his role, and there you have it! Tim resumes his role, while George became the official voice actor of a famous
antagonist that surprised video game fans alike, in the third company at the seventh phase, FF7, and by next year, DFF012, his character is packing up for the fight again after a yearly rest.

Mark Harmon made Superman sound like a badass boss-which is a good thing for me becouse all other actors make him sound just like batman thinks of him-naive and softy, plus he kicked ass in Crisis on Two Earths.

Are Tim Daly and George Newbern the same person? They look and sound alike. They're even wearing the same clothes in the picture!

Satam55, Kyle MacLachlin's been in amazing productions such as Dune, Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet for David Lynch. He's a good actor and it was sad to see him have to do that piece of crap Desperate Housewives so I'm delighted such a fine (and unknown amongst idiots who only know him from Desperate Housewives) actor got a shot at Superman and I thought his voice was great for it.

Yeah I remember the fugiive TV series Daly also starred opposite his mother Tyne Daly in Jusging Amy on CBS ... honestly like I said for the DCAU Superman voices Daly and Newbern are best ever. Adam Baldwin was a joke in Superman Doomsday. then again if I had huge cracks in my face I'd be funny. (Superman Doomsday model)
Replysaid at 4:37 PM on Sun Nov 29 2009
actually, Daly starred in the lead role of short lived "The Fugitive" series, based off the Harrison Ford movie.
Replysaid at 12:18 PM on Sat Nov 28 2009
I think Daly was suppose to reprise his role for Justice League/Justice League Unlimited but also had the chance to star in a TV series (Private Practice - spinoff of Grey's Anatomy). He would get more $ and overall better exposure for his career so he took it. Then George Newbern auditioned and got the role for Superman.

the JL Crisis On Two Earths movie voice will be Mark Harmon of NCIS.
I never got the change from Daly to Newbern so I think of the,m both as the #1 superman animated voice.

While George Newbern is a good contender for the best Superman voice over, I have to go with Tim Daly. He is my ultimate favorite.
I agree with Dtemplar. Bud Collyer was the definitive Superman voice during the Golden and Silver Ages of Superman in the media. And my sentimental favorite is Danny Dark from the SuperFriends and yes, even Beau Weaver deserves to be included.

Hmm, the Legion Superman is practically Superboy; he should be compared with other Superboys. Same problem with the Robins - they're not all the same age, regardless of identity (Grayson or Drake).

The thing about Yuri, at least from that particular clip, his Superman was more of a Superboy. I'd have to double check my Legion DVDs but I don't think Superman's 18 yet.
