Superman

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Superman with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Superman

Superman is an alien (Kryptonian) who was sent to Earth by his parents (Jor-El and Lara) before Krypton was destroyed.

His Kryptonian name is Kal-El and to the world he is Superman, but is also known as The Last Son of Krypton, The Man of Steel and The Man of Tomorrow. His alter-ego is Clark Kent; a journalist for the Daily Planet. His wife is Lois Lane who is also a Daily Planet journalist.

Raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville, Clark was taught the difference between right and wrong from a young age and grew up with strong values and morals.

Under a yellow sun Clark developed abilities that would continue to grow as he matured. Superman is one of the world's greatest super heroes and with his various abilities it's not hard to see why.

Some of Superman's powers include: Flight, Super Strength, Super Speed, Invulnerability, Regeneration, Heat Vision, X-Ray Vision, Freeze Breath, and Super Hearing. Superman is one of the most powerful super heroes of all time but he does have some weaknesses like any hero does.

Some of these weaknesses are: kryptonite (radioactive remains of Krypton), magic, extreme amounts of force/impact from even more powerful beings than himself and if exposed to a red sun he will lose all Kryptonian powers.

Starting from the top right and going down the list, my opinions would be:

- Matthew Mercer's actually pretty good as Superman: I'd like to hear more from him in the role, but he doesn't leave much of a lasting impression with his performance.

- Patrick Warburton is way too goofy and hard to take seriously as Superman, enough said: definitely a miscast.

- Bud Collyer was a pretty solid fit for the character, but came off as a little flat at times.

- Armin Shimerman sounds way too old in the role.

- Keith Ferguson's take is a bit too bland and generic here.

- Danny Dark is also pretty good, emoting well to boot, though his screams got a bit forced at times.

- Beau Weaver is in a similar boat to Danny Dark, only a bit more flat, but his screams are also much stronger.

- For the most part, Tim Daly was excellent, really bringing out Superman's character with his performance, if a bit limited in expressing emotion at times.

- Christopher McDonald worked well enough for the elderly Superman, but his delivery got a bit too flat at times.

- Jeff Kramer is okay, if a bit bland at times.

- George Newbern is also excellent, even managing to emote a little better than Tim Daly, so I'm probably going with him.

- Michael Daingerfield is actually pretty good, if a bit different from the others.

- Brandon Routh's voice is fitting, but his delivery is very flat and poor at times.

- Yuri Lowenthal sounds like a more positive Sasuke from Naruto as Superman: the voice is a bit awkward to listen to on Superman, but his acting's really natural, if nothing else.

- Crispin Freeman is pretty generic in this role.

- Adam Baldwin's a bit too deep and flat.

- Roger Rose is OK, if a bit bland and generic.

- Joseph May is good, if a bit rough at times.

- Kyle MacLachan is pretty solid, but a little dull.

- Christopher Corey Smith sounds a bit too old in the part & his delivery seems a bit forced.

- David Lodge sounds a lot like Jiraiya from Naruto with a Russian accent as Superman, so I can't say I entirely agree with the voice he went with, but I do think he brings a certain depth and presence to the role, so I'm OK with it.

- Nolan North is pretty good, though I feel he sounds fairly generic and bland at times.

- Mark Harmon's voice is a bit rough, but his acting's very good.

- I can barely hear David Kaye in that clip, but he seems pretty decent, if a little dull.

- James Denton is really, really great, bringing a lot of presence and warmth to the part: I really like his take.

- Mark Silk is incredibly generic and sounds too smug for Superman.

- Travis Willingham is funny, but is very hard to take seriously as the character.

- Mark Valley is a bit too low pitched and slightly gruff, but his acting's good.

- Matt Bomer's good, but a bit generic.

- Sam Daly's OK, but a bit low pitched.

- Channing Tatum's too loud and shout-y in the role.

- Peter Jessop's pretty good, but is a bit flat.

- Alan Tudyk sounds a bit too aggressive and ruthless.

- Troy Baker is a bit too smug and flat in the part for me.

- Jerry O'Connell is OK, but a bit too low and gruff at times.

Overall, My Top 5 would be:

1. George Newbern
2. Tim Daly
3. James Denton
4. Nolan North
5. Beau Weaver

Don't kill me, but (only going off clips here) I don't think The Lego Movie did a great job with casting this character. Channing Tatum ironically would be much better in live-action; here, he doesn't seem to do even the parody/lighthearted Superman justice.

I know that animated features are cast as showcases for celebrities, but I really think that Tatum's performance doesn't do respect for Willingham's, or the character in general. Will Arnett was a hilariously good Lego Batman.

Ton of these that others have already covered, so aside from George & Tim being faves, I'll add what hasnt been said.

Michael Daingerfield Hall's take is interesting - he plays him softer than his voice double David Kaye, kinda sounds like Crispin actually.

Both are good.

Interestingly, Nolan North wasn't originally going to play Supes in YJ - Crispin was. I prefer him as Red Arrow, but I did like his Superman & I'd like to hear more of it. Nolan kinda sounds a little old for this character tbh.

David Lodge, Chris Smith, Troy Baker, & Matthew Mercer are all natural fits that simply weren't given proper direction (Lodge is playing Jiraiya, Troy is reading a script) &/or were doing a low-budget production.

I like Matt's chibi Superman, but he has potential to do a more serious version as well (as does Travis, incidentally).

Other VA's I want to play this guy? Robin Atkin Downes, Jamieson Price, JAT, Scott Porter, DC Douglas, David Matranga, Cam Clarke, the Dobson Bros.

Yeah, I've officially been won over by George Newbern, he really nailed it after seeing more Justice League episodes. He plays off Kevin Conroy as Batman very nicely, actually, they had a fun dynamic going there.

I still like Tim Daly though, he did a very good job, but George has a bit more emotion and range in his take.

No one else is bad, but I just don't care much for them. Well, I laughed hearing Patrick Warburton using his Joe Swanson voice from Family Guy, though I don't think it fits very well.

I'm finally going to start commenting on voice compares so I might as well will start with Superman.

Superman is a iconic character that sadly a lot of folks nowadays think is a boring over powered mary-sue that I can't relate with...which I think is balderdash. I do think that a lot of writers don't know how to utilize him but when they do, I think Superman is a excellent classic hero and in this day and age that is something we definitely need. anyways on to the voice compare.

My personal favourite voice here is George Newbern, he did well at voice matching Tim Daly for the Justice League cartoons but I think its his performance in Superman vs. The Elite that really won me over as him as The Man of Steel. He's strong, dutiful, capable of compassion and mercy, sounds like he came from a "Smallville USA", pulls off all the personas well and can even be terrifying for his more darker depiction.

I also like Tim Daly but I think George honestly surpassed his take with ease. I don't think he's bad but I just prefer Newbern is all.

I think the other stand outs here are Travis Willingham, David Kaye, Michael Daingerfield Hall, Peter Jessop, Beau Weaver, Danny Dark, Nolan North, Mark Harmon and Jerry O'Connell.

I also give some credit also to Bud Collyer for being the first ever voice of Superman from the old radio shows and original shorts.

The rest aren't bad but they just don't hold my attention is all.

Overall my vote goes to George Newbern.

BONUS: Throwing in my two cents on people that I would love to see voice Superman in the future. I think both Ian Sinclair and Marc Diraison would make excellent voices for Superman/Kal-El/Clark Kent.

Stuart Milligan was also pretty good as BBC Radio's Superman. Most of the other guys do well, but my favorite out of all the modern voices is, oddly enough, Christopher McDonald!!! @Troodon2 Matt playing Supes here is a definite hearkening to Troy. Considering that Troy also played Two-Face & Matt does that character in Super Friends as well.

Matt often sounds like a warmer, friendlier version of Troy so it makes sense that he'd sub for him in Super Friends.

Beyond that, Troy cut off working with dubbing studios around this time, & Michael Sinterniklaas directed Super Friends...So they weren't exactly on friendly terms...

All in all, I do think this was a "Matt subs for Troy" situation as is often the case.

Because there's so many others, I'll just say that my other favorites are Adam Baldwin, Chris Smith, Danny Dark, Nolan North, Roger Rose, Travis Willingham, and Bud Collyer is classic. They captured the heroic aspects of the characters of the best, while still sounding well-rounded to me. Some of the others sounded either boring or too young/old. George Newbern is my favorite, both for nostalgic reasons (the DCAU Justice League show was my introduction to the character) and because he perfectly captures the gentle authority that defines Superman. If you want to see what's probably his best performance as the character, go watch 2012's Superman vs. The Elite, which is based on the classic comic storyline "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?".

Tim Daly is nearly as good, though he's got a bit more of an edge to his voice that I don't like quite as much. Still very close second, as George Newbern was originally selected for the Justice League show because his voice sounded very similar to Daly's.

Adam Baldwin is a good choice for a somewhat older, somewhat darker Superman, which is fitting for a film based off of a storyline titled "The Death of Superman". I wouldn't want him all the time, but he does a perfectly good job.

Kyle MacLachlan does a very good job as well. As "Hollywood" voices for Superman go, he's one of the best, and his high, energetic voice helps contrast him with New Frontier's incredibly gritty and noir-sounding Batman, Jeremy Sisto.

Nolan North has a decent voice for the character, although he's obviously more known for Superboy on Young Justice than the rarely seen Superman. His main probably is his recognizability, because we've all heard his Nathan Drake voice a thousand times, and his Superman voice is barely any different.

Mark Harmon has it even worse in that respect, because while Nolan North has a voice that's recognizable for the huge amount of characters he's played, these days Harmon is instantly recognizable for a single character on a single, live-action show: Gibbs on NCIS. Crisis on Two Earths is barely watchable for me, not because it's a bad film, but because all I can hear is Gibbs in a Superman outfit. It's impossible to hear anything else.

I actually really liked James Denton in All-Star Superman. Would I have preferred Newbern or Daly to lend their voice to the adaptation of arguably the greatest Superman story ever written? Undoubtedly. But Denton did a perfectly respectable job of conveying the emotion of the piece, and his voice didn't seem unfitting at all.

Mark Valley did a fine job contrasting with the booming voice of Peter Weller in Dark Knight Returns. I'd welcome another film with him in the role.

Sam Daly sounds like his dad. Not a bad choice, not anything super amazing. He didn't have much meaningful dialogue in the film anyway, so it's hard to judge.

Haven't watched Unbound yet, so I'll reserve judgement on Matt Bomer.

Alan Tudyk wasn't BAD, really, but I definitely think a better choice could have been made. I get that they didn't want to use any of the DCAU cast, but still, I wasn't enthralled by his performance. Maybe it's just because Superman's kind of an ass in Justice League: War.

Point obviously goes to George Newbern, in my opinion, the true voice of Superman, and the only actor other than Christopher Reeve that I'd place on the pedestal of being the true Man of Tomorrow.

I just want to point out that in Troy Baker's sample, the line "Let's make them fear the survivors of the Atom" is not Superman. It's actually Nolan North as Atomic Green Lantern. Which is a shame, because it's the most emotional line out of all of them.

Yeah, I really like Superman in Infinite Crisis, but now that I'm comparing his voice side-by-side with people like George Newbern, it sounds like Troy just really wanted to play it safe and not try to be creative with the voice.

However, there are a few lines in the game that sound great and show Troy had the potential to do more. Because it's Superman, he tends to remain calm, even while fighting, but every now and then, his voice will raise and it's got a great impact.

On the other hand, it may just because Superman's playstyle makes him a big deal whenever he steps it up, and that's usually the points when his voice gets bigger, so maybe that's kind of tricking me into thinking the voice has more going for it.

Anyway, my vote stays with George.

Tim Daly and George Newbern aside as the obvious top two, I really like Mark Harmon's take on Superman.

He sounds like an older, wiser and wearier kind of Superman who has been at his job for a while. And the accent makes it sound like he actually grew up on a farm in Kansas, which is something no one else adds to the character.

@Ross123 Didn't care for it now that I heard, it sounds far too generic for me, his Espio is not the most original but he actually put effort there, here he's not even trying which is sad because his Joker is surprisingly dead on and his Loki's great too and I love his Yuri Lowell(the last one at least put something more original than the Japanese voice as well so he wasn't the king of generic voices)

Still the first two choices, Tim and George are the best choices

@HienFan When you're 1 of over 30 people who voiced a character, I'm sure it can be pretty hard to stand out from the rest.

Armin Shimerman was decent, but Peter Jessop was pretty good. I don't like Alan Tudyk's Superman, but that's more the writing and general disdain for the New 52 version of Superman than Tudyk's acting.

Both Tim and George give fantastic performances and each sound eerily similar, but with who is better, I honestly think it depends on which version you prefer.

Daly's superman is much more get the job done, and has the mild mannered personality of Clark Kent down to a T, while Newbern is the much more emotionally driven superman.

Daly did get a good amount of time with the character having both the animated series and a couple animated films, but Newbern has had so much more time to flesh out the character and make it his own role having two TV series, appearing in two others, as well as a film and a video game to perfect the character.

Again I like both performances very well, but if I had to pick I'd say Newbern, just due to the fact he has had so much more to work with over the years and his Superman I feel has had much more development (JLU and Superman Vs. The Elite are great examples of this).

If I could pick someone instead of either George or Tim I'd go for Nolan North. While he didn't have a whole lot to work with, he had enough for all the episodes he appeared in and nailed the authoritative side of Superman.

If not Nolan than Travis Willingham for his great comedic portrayal of Superman.

Not that into making lists but I'll make one for this.
1. George Newbern- He has every quality that Superman needs. He's heroic, friendly, and (when he needs to be) threatening. All in all the perfect Superman voice.
2.Tim Daly- The crazy thing is I watched the Superman TAS and didn't notice he didn't reprise his role in JLA. That being said, he's very similar to Newbern (after all Newbern was a replacement, makes sense that he would) but the one thing Newbern does to beat out Daly is the emotion. Tim is great, but he falls flat occasionally. Still really good however.
3. Mark Harmon- A lot of really good qualities to this performance. Not much to say, it's good but not my favorite.
4. Mark Valley- Pretty good choice, a voice that stands out, decent performance.
5.Peter Jessop- If there's one thing I'd critique, it's that he sounds a little too big and mighty. But it suits this particular version.
6.Keith Ferguson- Surprisingly good, sounds a bit like Newbern to me. Not bad.
7.Alan Tudyk- Has potential, but he barely had anything to say in this movie.
8.Matt Bomer- Aside from some awkward delivery here and there he's decent.
9.Roger Rose- As a somewhat comedic version it fits, and I'd like to hear him get another crack at it under different direction.
10.Nolan North- It's a little bland, but again, I'd like to see him have another shot.

You know, I've realized something, in Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, Superman is voiced by Sam Daly, but in Justice League: War´╗┐ he is voiced by Alan Tudyk, and so I wonder, why not simply bring back Sam Daly for Justice League: War as well? a little consistency with Superman's voice, for these two films, I mean, they exist in the same universe.

Superman is a really hard compare. Not just because there's to many voices but also because a lot of them blend together.

Now that's NOT a bad thing, it just shows that DC has done a good job at casting Superman because there are a lot more good voices than bad ones here.

Yes there are bad voices, especially the ones before the 90s but that gets outshadowed by too many good ones.

But I'm still not a fan of the constant recasting, you know like with Batman.

I suppose my vote goes to Tim since he was the one to open up the amazing voice for Superman which it seems a lot of these people followed.

I'll consider George a close 2nd though because there was something special about his take on the role.

George Newbern is my favourite, and "Superman vs. The Elite" is my reason why. Definitely a powerhouse performer as the Man of Steel, and makes him sound so damn likeable. But he's done great in all his pieces of work. Close second, for me, is probably... either Travis Willingham or Matt Bomer. I like 'em both equally for the different versions they portrayed.

Alan Tudyk... could do well as Superman, but he needs a better-written version of the character for me to judge. New 52-Superman is a jerk.

Also... while he has played Batman already... what would people say to the idea of Roger Craig Smith as Superman? Something inspired by his Captain America, but a little older and more experienced-sounding, would work really well for a traditional Superman.

I can see why everyone likes Tim Daly. Everything's there that Superman is, but George Newbern delivered a little something extra; a Superman that had seen dark times and continued to face them. He made him seem like a man with a heavy burden, but he wanted to carry that burden and see it through to the end.

Having said all that, though, my personal favourite is Mark Harmon, just because he makes Superman sound like he's been around the block a few times and is still the good guy he is. Not a lot of actors here actually make Superman sound as experienced as he would be.

I'm putting my vote on Travis Willingham; while he doesn't get to perform an especially wide range of emotions, his inflections make him seem really invested in what he's doing, and the voice itself is really close to what I would consider the definitive "Superman" sound that allows me to hear the character rather than the actor behind the character.

My favorite is George Newbern for his Superman vs The Elite performance, where he got to sound more heroic and likable than what I saw from his other appearances.

Matt Bomer has a nice voice for the part and good acting with personality from what I've heard, so he's my second place.

My third place is James Denton because I felt he captured his kind and gentle side the best out of all of them.

I also liked Mark Valley too.

And on another note... I may get a few disapproving looks for saying this, but every time I've heard Tim Daly he sounded too much like a generic tough-guy with little personality. I don't feel he sounds heroic or likeable enough, his voice and performance for the character has never sounded fully appropriate for Superman, in my honest opinion. @CatsTuxedo Hmmm...he'd definitely have the power in his voice, though I think he's a bit too deep and/or gridmark for Superman. Paul would be an awesome (if not a bit typecast) Lex though.

@LordofEvil96 True. Unfortunately, given DC's track record, it doesn't seem like that'll ever happen.

However, if someone were to twist my arm and force me to select an LA-based actor, I'd go with Fred Tatasciore since he can capture a similar "strong, humble hero" quality to what Dobson can.

Similar to my comment in the Spider-Man VC, this is one of the voice compares where I feel that every single actor did well. Some better than others, yes, but none that really stand out as "poor".

Overall, my top picks are:

1.) Matt Bomer
2.) Mark Valley
3.) George Newbern
4.) Tim Daly
5.) Mark Harmon

All of these guys do really great jobs protraying Superman of different styles. However, if I had to choose.. I'd either go with Tim Daly, or Matt Bomer with George Being my final. If I had to choose a second set of 3 it'd be Mark Valley, Mark Harmon, and James Denton - simply because of acting ability. I can believe they're Superman.

I say the best modern ones are Tim Daly, George Newbern, Mark Harnon, Mark Valley, and Nolan North though Nolan's was kind of a jerk to Superboy compared to the Kents he definitely could go into Superman's angry moments well if he got the chance. Out of the classic ones Bud sounds the most convincing.

@Starscreamsfan As someone who enjoys the voices in the old DC cartoons I actually don't have a problem with that but I do say since Bud's Superman isn't the emotional 3 dimensional hero who goes on about truth, justice, and morality then I say he is the best of the classic voices and Tim and George are the best modern ones.
Starscreamsfan
said at 8:51 PM on Thu May 16 2013
@pete I think I'll have to agree and disagree with that last aspect. The Fleischer Cartoons really didn't used Collyer that much, so Superman simply rescues people and the fact that he doesn't even have lines in some shorts, doesn't give Collyer any justice. But if we talk about the old time radio show, Collyer delivers very powerful acting both as Clark Kent and as Superman.

@Starscreamsfan I think a variety of different opinions is good for this sight. From what I could gather, most of the members hear (including me) prefer post 90's voices in superheroes (Tim Daly as Superman, Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as Joker). But then I saw your comments and though "wait this guy is picking Superfriends voices." I thought it was a refreshing change of pace. The more opinions we see, the more we fully understand peoples views on these actors, instead of a bunch of us kids just voting for the newest guy. Although I listen to every voice clip, I'm afraid some people disregard the older voices just because they are old. Come on guys, a lot of these actors did great work. Even if they aren't your favorite, they deserve the option to be acknowleged.

James Denton. Don't ask me why, everyone else sounded either too sissy or reminded me too much of their performances in other media. Adam Baldwin - Good.
Crispin Freeman - Different, but likable.
Kyle MacLachlan - OK, nothing special.
CCS - A little bland, but fine.
Michael Dangerfield - I thought it was George in that cartoon. I`m impressed.
Jeff Kramer - For lack of a better word, too superheroy.
Mark Harmon - He would of bean better as an aged Superman.
David Kaye - I think he can do a serious Superman if he toned down the camp.
Nolan North - Not bad, but not outstanding. Still one of the better ones.
James Denton - I like it.
Roger Rose - Worked for what the show was going for.
Patrick Warburton - I thought parodies weren't aloud in VCs.
Keith Ferguson - He's a good cartoon voice but I can still take him seriously. He doesn't go for that stereotypical superhero voice.
Travis Willingham - Although he does go fore that stereotypical Superman voice, he does it better than others.

Yuri Lowenthal - Younger version, I watched that show a bit and I liked him in it.
Danny Dark - OK
Beau Weaver - Better than Danny
Brandon Routh - Like his movie performance, a little dull.
Bud Collyer - Awesome as the first Superman voice.
Joseph May - Surprisingly good.
David Lodge - A different version, but good for what they were going for.

Tim Daly is my personal favorite as Superman. I felt he really nailed the character, though George Newbern is a worthy successor. Christopher McDonald also worked as an older Superman. Mark Harmon does sound like a good middle ground between Daly and Newbern, IMO.

Yuri Lowenthal also worked pretty well as a younger Superman/Superboy. I'd like to see him played either a Superboy or Superman again. Adam Baldwin also works well as Superman, as does Crispin Freeman.

James Denton works well as Superman in All-Star Superman. Kyle MacLachlan also worked pretty well as Superman in TNF and Rgoer Rsoe nailed the Silver Age Superman on B: TBatB. David Kaye's Superman also seems inspired by the Silver Age and It hink he works well for that version.

IMO, Nolan North is miscast as both Superman AND Superboy. Hisperformance doesn't work for either of them and it doesn't help that YJ made Superman an uncharacteristic jerk and Superboy a quick to angry emo.
BurtLancaster1913

@Anicomicgeek I'm inclined to agree. I've enjoyed Nolan North in other stuff he's done (Ultimate Avengers, Hulk Vs., Crisis on 2 Earths, TMNT) but his voice was a poor fit for Superman, lacking the warmth, power and nobility we expect from Superman. Maybe that isn't fair since the show wrote Superman as a jerk and never gave him or his relationship with Superboy any proper development (and I don't really care about Superboy in any incarnation). I also felt North was miscast as Cyclops as well (who also got written badly on W&TXM). But North will always be an awesome Deadpool. :)

Kyle and Mark are pretty great. Mark is famous for playing a badass boss/ hero, so that makes him perfect.

I honestly can't pick *one* voice, most of them are excellent in their own way. Some of my favorites:

Tim Daly and George Newbern- They honestly sound kind of similar in terms of their "hero voice", but Daly and Newbern do a great job in their respective series. Newbern also gets to play around a little more with Superman's anger issues on Justice League/JLU.

Adam Baldwin-For a rougher Superman, Baldwin's voice is a great fit, and he also does a wonderful job of differentiating the original and clone Superman in his acting without really changing the voice.

Kyle MacLachlan- He's got that strange, 50s quality to his voice, which works perfectly for a period piece like New Frontier.

James Denton-Denton has a softer voice than we're used to from Superman, but that fits the more introspective qualities of All-Star Superman, and he still has plenty of authority in it.

For all these years I thought the voice for STAS and JLU were the same person. They sound so much alike.

Yeah I remember the fugiive TV series Daly also starred opposite his mother Tyne Daly in Jusging Amy on CBS ... honestly like I said for the DCAU Superman voices Daly and Newbern are best ever. Adam Baldwin was a joke in Superman Doomsday. then again if I had huge cracks in my face I'd be funny. (Superman Doomsday model)

actually, Daly starred in the lead role of short lived "The Fugitive" series, based off the Harrison Ford movie.

I think Daly was suppose to reprise his role for Justice League/Justice League Unlimited but also had the chance to star in a TV series (Private Practice - spinoff of Grey's Anatomy). He would get more $ and overall better exposure for his career so he took it. Then George Newbern auditioned and got the role for Superman.

the JL Crisis On Two Earths movie voice will be Mark Harmon of NCIS.

I never got the change from Daly to Newbern so I think of the,m both as the #1 superman animated voice.
