Lois' portrayals in other media are always, often, a little... middling for me. Often, they either focus TOO much on her relations with Superman and her characterization is subsequently bland OR her individual character is an unpleasant presence.

My current favourite Lois, and the one who manages to balance independence with a fantastic chemistry with her Man of Steel, is currently Pauley Perrette. She bounces off wonderfully with George Newbern's Supes, as shown in this scene the clip focuses on, which helps to truly make their relationship feel organic and real... but, not only that, she herself captures the subtleties of Lois--her wit, her charm, her ability to speak to the most powerful beings in the universe with a bluntness few others do. Lois is both her own character and a great romantic foil to Clark, a quality shared by my second favourite...

Stana Katic. Unbound, to me, is an underrated movie and one of its strongest points is that Lois and Clark bounced super well off of each other. Stana has a wonderfully distinctive voice and her coy wit, playfulness, unwavering confidence and refusal to take anyone's c*** lying down made her a standout and one of the most multifaceted takes on Lois in animation to date. I slightly prefer Pauley but Stana is DEFINITELY a worthy second place!

I also like the performances of Maria Bamford, Sirena Irwin, Christina Hendricks, Grey Griffin, Juliet Landau and Tara Strong. Grey and Tara, especially, both have a lot of potential, but their limited material really holds them back; out of the two, I slightly prefer, in all honestly, Tara, however, for having gotten to show a bit more of Lois' overall character. Maria Bamford... I just LOVE her energy and charm, she is my third favourite for sure.

In all honesty, I'm not a big fan of the rest. Most of them are just plain forgettable. But Dana Delany... whew boy... She does the deadpan well enough, but I find her Lois totally lacking in any sincerity. It's a rather flat performance not helped by a flat characterization and, the few moments Lois got to be likeable in the DCAU, it felt strained and a little forced. Flashpoint Paradox is the one time I'd say I actually liked her performance.

My vote goes to Pauley Petrette, with Stana Katic and Maria Bamford being my other two standouts!

CASTING CALL: Generic they may be, but Laura Bailey, Kari Wahlgren and Jennifer Hale all could NAIL a multifaceted Lois Lane if given the chance--able to be both dry and confident, but compassionate and empathetic. I'd also love to hear Caitlin Glass, Tara Platt, Michelle Ruff and Kate Higgins get a shot at the role. But my personal pick for Lois would be Emily Swallow; her Lisa (Castlevania [2017]), in the short time we had her, had EVERY BOX ticked for me--wit, humour, confidence, compassion, sincerity, warmth... Drop the accent and she'd be phenomenal, imho, as Lois Lane!

@Lion's Edge I actually agree with you about Dana's Lois. It's a rather underwhelming performance, especially if you compare it to her performances in Mask of the Phantasm and Wing Commander Academy.

However, if you want a better sample of Joan Alexander's take, check this Superman radio episode at 1:13:

Context of the story in this episode is that Lois got framed for murder, so Joan delivers a rather emotional performance in this saga.

@Starscreamsfan Oh my gosh, that's the most befuddling part of it all. Dana was PHENOMENAL as Andrea Beaumont; to such a degree that is why they wanted her to voice Lois. Yet she never got the material, nor the direction, to recapture anything CLOSE to her Andrea in quality.

Having heard this sample of Joan Alexander, I'd definitely bump her up a little; it's nice to finally get to hear an example of her emoting better. If I were to rank her and formulate a Top 5, it'd definitely be--

1. Pauley Perrette
2. Stana Katic
3. Maria Bamford
4. Tara Strong
5. Joan Alexander

Thanks for sharing this with me, man!
said at 7:20 AM on Wed May 9 2018
@Lion's Edge I agree. She really was likeable as Andrea, but as Lois, I guess the showrunners did their best to make her as unlikeable and bland as they could, so Dana's Lois got on my nerves.

Yeah, honestly, the actors from the radio show (Bud Collyer, Julian Noa and Joan herself) got to deliver more emotion and passion into their performances in the radio show. They're not bad in the Fleischer cartoons, but they got so little material to work with that they don't get to show much range.

Joan is my favorite, mainly because she is the closest to my favorite Lois actress, which would be Noel Neill (who played Lois in the 50's live-action Superman show). The way they emote and the chemistry they have with the other actors that played the Planet crew in their respective shows is phenomenal.

Tara Strong... wasn't bad per say, but I have a hard time saying her Lois was good.

I will say that she certainly has potential, she does got the right tone for the character, so if she added a little more spunk to go with it her performance would'be been 10 times better than the one we got already.

As is, Tara's Lois is okay for the most part. Again she just needs to add more personality is all.

Tara Strong is bland. Like really bland. Not one of her strongest performances. As much as I'm not a fan of her Harley Quinn, she's clearly better as Harley Quinn than Lois Lane.
said at 4:46 PM on Wed Feb 14 2018
@Shaun Ince I kind'a agree with you there. While I do think Tara certainly has potential for the character (she does have the right tone I think) I don't think she put enough personality into her performance. (in fact I feel a lot of Tara's roles nowadays kind'a lack that. :( )

@D.A.V.E. Wait, when did Lois beg to Lex?
said at 3:30 PM on Tue Feb 13 2018
@TylerMirage In the video the clip is from, when she lowers her voice and calls Lex "Mr. Luthor" when he approaches her and is about to attack her. Not literally begging for her life, but basically trying to talk him out of it.
TylerMirage (Admin)

@D.A.V.E. So I'm assuming you've seen the episode that her clip is from, yes? (Note: I have, since I'm the one that created said clip).

Known supervillain Lex Luthor, donning a flying metal suit, announces his presence unexpectedly.

Lois immediately and demandingly barks at him, "Whatya' want, Luthor?"

Said known supervillain in a flying suit *who just took out Superman* begins to threateningly approach her.

Lois, with an almost deadpan delivery and a coy smile on her face, says "Lex...so, uh, Mr. Luthor, sir..." as she deliberately backs away from Lex's advances, drawing him closer to where Superman is, clearly stalling for time.

And when Lex manages to knock Superman away again, she runs *towards* him/the fight.

Now because she's close enough to Lex, and he's currently distracted with Superman, she is the one who successfully deactivates the suit. And, as the dialogue in the clip reveals, she was aware/willing/capable of "teaming up" with Superman in order to stop Lex.

You'll have to unpack for me how that constitutes "begging" or her being "lame". ;)

I think the problem with Lois that a lot of people overlook or ignore, is that everyone tries to judge the character by herself. And while that's totally understandable, to me Lois is always at her best when she's Superman's companion/contrast. The snarky, sometimes deadpan realist and the big hearted boy scout. A defining example of opposites attract.

And for my money, Dana Delany and Pauley Perrette do that the best. They're great contrasts to their respective Supermen, although they do have their moments that help them stand on their own. Granted they're not as obvious or prevalent as some would like, but they're there.

Happy Valentine's Day Everyone! What could be a more perfect time for me to talk about Lois Lane, one of my favourite Superman characters (who was sadly ruined in Superman's New 52 Comic) and one of my favourite Love Interests in Media.

To me Lois Lane is the perfect romantic foil to Superman, providing a source of Glib, Cynical Humour and an Understated, dependable Warmth.

Here Are My 5 Favourite Voices For Her:

5. Sirena Irwin
4. Stana Katic/ Grey DeLisle/ Paget Brewster
3. Anne Heche
2. Christina Hendricks/ Joan Alexander
1. Dana Delany

Future VA Suggestions:

To Go Along with my Suggestion of Vic Mignogna as Superman, Who could be more perfect for Lois Lane than Caitlin Glass? Doing a performance that's a cross between her Winry Rockbell and Cammy voices would fit Lois Lane wonderfully.

I also think Rachael Leigh Cook would be fun as Lois, using a deeper version of her Tifa Lockhart voice. That would convey a solid sense of Lois' Tenacious, yet sensitive personality.

I Also recommend Erica Schroeder, Adrienne Wilkinson, Sarah Edmondson and Nikki Cox.

VC thoughts update

Joan Alexander really nailed Lois. She made her sassy yet playful and likeable. She also had some great moments in the radio show, like in the "Dr. Blythe's Confidence Gang" saga, where she was arrested for a murder she didn't commit. Joan puts a lot of emotion in that saga and I really think the only one who is up there with her as the most well rounded Lois is Noel Neill (who played Lois in the Kirk Alyn serials and the 1950's TV show). Overall, Joan is Lois in voiceover form.

Second is Mary McDonald Lewis. I really think she makes her sound quite friendly and relatable. She also sounds like an improved and polished take of Margot Kidder's version, which I unfortunately never liked (always found her extremely obnoxious). Overall, Mary is really what Margot should have been.

Ginny McSwain is actually pretty solid as Lois, too. I actually liked how the writers made Lois' anger moments more comical, 'cause it made Ginny showcase some great comedic timing. Overall, Ginny's Lois is really what the DCAU version should have been.

Louise Williams (who played Lois in the SuperFriends short "The Ice Demon") is actually pretty good. She didn't do much in that short, but she really sounded pretty fitting.

Grey DeLisle is my favorite of the modern voices. She sounds pretty fitting and she also adds a little bit of spunk, which is nice.

Kate Bosworth, Sirena Irwin and Cindy Robinson have nice voices, but their acting leaves a lot to be desired. Kate and Cindy's deliveries are quite stiff while Sirena seems to overact the part.

I'm sorry, but I'm not really a fan of Dana Delany, Monica Murray, Anne Heche, Kyra Sedgwick, Christina Hendricks, Adrienne Mischler, Pauley Perrette, Stana Katic, Juliet Landau, Paget Brewster and Maria Bamford. I always felt they were quite bland, and in the case of Dana, incredibly annoying and unfriendly (when she had the chance to do sweeter moments, they always felt forced to me).

Shannon Farnon... I'm sorry, but she didn't leave an impact on me at all and she sounds like a typical damsel in distress.
said at 8:02 AM on Mon Jan 9 2017
Dana was way better in Flashpoint Paradox. I'd agree that she could sound bland and unfriendly every once in a while in the DCAU.
said at 8:37 AM on Mon Jan 9 2017
@GreenGoblin75 Yeah, that was the only time I actually liked Dana's Lois. If they got her to reprise Lois in another non-DCAU project, I think she would grow on me (but not to the point of becoming my top favorite, since Joan really nailed the character IMO.

Honestly, I think Tara Strong is a much more improved version of Dana Delany's take. She doesn't sound as unfriendly as Dana does and she really is quite amusing in the role.

She's my new fourth place, right in-between Ginny and Louise.

 10 Shout Outs!
I'll go with the majority on this one and go with Dana Delany. I've been currently watching Superman the Animated Series the past week and her performance I think sounds way better in the show than the clip here would suggests. She has her moments both good and bad but when she's good, I think she nailed it. She's the most fitting for an intrepid reporter.

I think the other standouts here are Christina Hendricks, Pauley Perrette, Grey DeLisle-Griffin, Sirena Irwin, Juliet Landau, Stana Katic, Ginny McSwain, Joan Alexander and Maria Bamford. I think they either gave great performances or have the potential to be great if they ever reprise again in the future.

Honestly this wasn't the easiest compare for me to assess. I'll admit a lot of Lois's voices are kinda bland as are many depictions.

BONUS: I'd love to see someone like Emily Neves or Heather Doersken voice Lois. I think they could totally nail her.

Aside from the vintage VA's, no one really truly nails Lois, Dana had her moments, but in all honesty with the exception Of Kate(this counts her sample here as well) and sadly Amy Adams(would've been a nice change of pace for her) the live action VA's are much better IMO, and if there was one live VA I'd like to see on here and would vote for it'd be Erica Durance. Her Lois on Smallville is so much fun I loved her immediately. I hope the Season 11 comic is updated with the cast back. The 40's and 50's portayers(film, tv, and radio) are among my favorites too.

@PsychicVoiceSpy It's the character in general that can be bland and irritating. Lois Lane in general isn't all too interesting if you ask me, so that might account for your not caring.

Pauley has a caring feel to her so when she jokes you know it's in good fun while Maria has good delivery that just makes it funnier charming.

Some others kinda make her sound, for lack of a better word, b**chy and even though I grew up with her voice I feel Dana falls under this sometimes. She has her moments where it does come off as caring but other times...

Slim chance but since Smallville continued in comic form, maybe Warner Brothers will try and make more money off it in the future by adapting some of those comic stories into an animated direct-to-video film and reunite the Smallville cast. :)

I'm gonna go with Dana Delaney on this one, but Anne Heche, Kyra Sedgwick, Christina Hendricks, and Sirena Irwin are also good, too, thoguh Hence did start off rocky. Kate Bosworth, much like in the actual movie, stunk as Lois.

@Anicomicgeek Grey DeLisle was also good, but I'm sticking with Dana for this one.

@Anicomicgeek Well, then I'll differ on that, dude. I kind of wish Grey Delisle did more lines, but I liked her Lois a lot. She has my vote.

Dana Delaney by far. I think she is not only the best animated Lois, but the best Lois Lane ever. She has the sass and the confidence of a top reporter and a stong woman but she still retains that femininty that I think Superman falls in love with. I HATE versions of Lois thats just a hardcore feminist bitch cuz I don't think even Superman would put up with that **** for too long hence why I HATED Kate Bosworth's version.

I liked most of them, but Joan Alexander definitely gave the character life, and played Lois for more than 20 years (on radio, theater and later, television).

@PurpleWarrior13 But Dana is probably my favorite overall, but Joan certainly set the standard.
