Ah yes Mario well known as one of the most iconic Video Game characters ever that much cannot be denied. But how does he fare in this Voice Compare?

Well lets see first of all we have his appearance in Saturday Supercade voiced by none other than Peter "Optimus Prime" Cullen. Now granted it is rather strange to hear Mario WITHOUT an Italian/New Yorker accent but to be fair this is pre-Super Mario Bros; in fact it came out in the early 80's. Peter Cullen's voice work for Mario may seem strange at first but it is interesting nevertheless.

Though I am sure many of you are familiar with Lou Albano as Mario in SMBSS (both the Live Action and Animated segments) and yeah it is pretty classic and rather fitting for Mario. Walker Boone took over ever since SMB3 and he was a pretty good replacement.

Now there is Marc Graue for Hotel Mario (in which I admit I didn't think it was that bad.)

And of course the current voice for Mario whom is none other than Charles Martinet, while he usually doesn't get all that many lines when he does get them they are generally done rather well.

So I like them all but I will go with Lou Albano (with Charles Martinet as a close second).

Larry is really weird sounding, I honestly would put him on the bottom.

I think the cartoon duo are the best sounding though Walker was a bit better to me.

Ronald Ruben was also good wish he done more.

Marc was pretty decent and entertaining.

Charles was funny though I like him more in the N64 days than today though his Wii era was definitely the worst, kinda nasal.

Peter Cullen has a good voice but acting eh flat.

Nicholas Glaeser is one of the better voices in that game but still pretty generic and flat.

VC thoughts update

I feel Captain Lou Albano does the best job as Mario. He makes the character fun, headstrong, loveable and gives him a rather endearing bumbling quality which I really like. Honestly, to this day, I feel this is Mario.

Walker Boone does have some of Captain Lou's inflections, but I feel he sounds like he's trying to hard to sound like Captain Lou. But still, his performance is good.

Peter Cullen works for how the character was depicted in the Donkey Kong games.

I know a lot of people love Charles Martinet's take, and I think it's good, but I just don't think he would work if he spoke in "full sentences" (and yes, I've heard his Mario in the Mario Sports Mix interview video, and I still feel he doesn't work).

Marc Graue is memorable thanks to the memes.

Ronald B. Ruben, Nicholas Glaeser and Larry Moran just don't work for me.

Oh come on, how am I not giving this one to Charles Martinet?

He's had tons of time as the character from main series entries to spin-offs and he's pretty much THE definitive voice for Mario.

Even if they get a big celebrity voice for the upcoming Illumination film, they are seriously gonna have a rough time living up to Martinet.

Lou Albano was also pretty good for cartoon standards, he also managed to get the Brooklyn style down to a tee.

The rest range from okay or questionable to unintentionally funny like Marc Graue, such a true classic.
said at 2:33 PM on Wed May 16 2018
@RetroPokeFan I seriously hope they don't get a celebrity voice actor for Mario or any of the other main characters in the franchise. It just wouldn't feel right without the iconic voices we all know and love. Of course knowing Illumination we'll most likely get Zac Efron as Mario and Amy Schumer as Peach...

Oh please, Charles Martinet is the number 1 Mario! That over the top Italian accent and the energetic nature suits Mario to a T. He's really the only memorable one.

I suppose Lou Albano does a decent job too and has his own charm. I just think it's so plain and simple compared to Charles.

The rest are alright but nothing special.

I gotta give this to Charles Martinet. It's always fun to hear, even if its just short phrases. I've played the Mario games for so long that at this point, that's the voice I hear as Mario.

With that said, I also think Lou Albano (RIP) was also entertaining in the Mario Bros. Super Show cartoon he was in and Walker Boone was a decent replacement for the other two Mario cartoons.

The rest are okay, although Marc Graue was funny as Mario in the Hotel Mario cutscenes.

Charles makes Mario seem endearing, energetic, and soft spoken, all things I really like about his rendition of Mario, and my vote goes to him.

That said, Lou Albano has a nice voice for him as well.

The rest are tolerable but fairly bland, with two exceptions: Mark Graue and the Unknown VA, both of whom suffer from stilted and forced acting, and in the UVA's case he sounds like a Hispanic man trying to be Italian...I guess?

Charles has been voicing the character for 20 years; he pretty much is Mario by this point. However, Lou Albano did a very good job too, fitting Mario's happy-go-lucky personality well and [I'm assuming] being the only actual Italian in the VC. As for the others, I don't really have much to say; they're not awful or anything (aside from the UVA), they're just kinda bland.

@Music Meister

I was thinking that too. If they were to make another Mario cartoon, I don't think Charlie's voice would work for more than short phrases. They'd probably be better off bring Boone back. Just my opinion.
said at 10:42 PM on Mon Apr 21 2014
@Music Meister Martinet actually has an awesome amount of range that I feel is under utilized, so I'm sure he could do a different take on Mario's voice if given more speaking lines in say a show or something. The thing that Cartman referenced was more of a promotion, I'm sure he'd be directed differently in another situation.

Something just now came to mind, Charles also voices Mario at the Nintendo World store and sometimes other places in the summer or other times of the year, and there he doesn't just talk in a higher tone as Mario, but sometimes makes the voice sound a slight bit deeper. Whenever he sings "happy birthday" for someone, it sounds a lot deeper, and we hear him talk in a lower tone as Mario at times on his Vine account, so yeah maybe he could adjust it like that should Mario appear in a TV series/movie/etc.

Walker did an ok job as did Marc.

Peter was poor, that shocked me as he's brilliant at most of his other roles but he still gets my respect for bein the 1st voice for Mario & that ain't easy.

The Unknown Voice Actor sounds like Peter Sellers Inspector Clouseau rather than Mario.

said at 9:16 PM on Tue Apr 14 2015
@Ross123 They're mostly fine really, I rated Charles on the bottom half but it was still one of his better roles, I just thought Mario should sound rougher and lower though(and Walker happened to fit both the best...) I wonder how it would be like if he took Ronald Ruben's take like it was initial planned before Charles decided it would sound too initimidating

Marc was relatively good, he did a good job in that sloppy mess of a game even though he had to say some awkward lines

Peter... his voice isn't terrible but his acting sounds weirdly flat here

Unknown's voice is one of the better in that game but yet it's both flat and is more of that inspector voice you said than a rough and tumble plumber

While they all sound like crap, Charles Martinet is the only official Mario voice for the games with no one else to compare to.

His version sounds earraping too when it gets high pitch and it fluctuates as well BUT it's what we're used to, it's what we know, it IS the voice of Mario. So it'd be the one that I'd choose. And being as popular as it is, even tho I think it can be an annoying voice, it's acceptable for Mario somehow. lol

The others I'm not so used to but I think they fit their own versions of Mario, since to me they all seemed like totally different incarnations of the character.

This voice comparison will be a little hard to go through since Mario had different types of voices (and personalities) since he first debuted in 1981. But here we go...

1. Charles Martinet

This is easily the most well-known Mario voice. It's a very good one, though his high-pitched tone does get a bit annoying sometimes, mostly when he's shouting in a certain way. But at least Charles Martinet talks only when he's allowed to, since Nintendo prefers to keep Mario silent most of the time. Overall, it's a distinctive and appealing voice to listen to. It's safe for me to say Charles provides the most appropriate Mario voice.

2. Lou Albano

If Mario was to talk normally, then Lou Albano would be the best voice for that regard. Some may not care for Mario speaking in a Brooklyn accent, but I didn't mind it at all. He's easily my favorite Mario voice from the 3 cartoons, as he gives the character an energetic and fun feel.

Lou was great to listen to, and may he rest in peace.

3. Ronald B Ruben

For an early Italian-accented Mario voice, it's not bad. This voice is not quite as high pitched as Charles' voice, but it's decent for what it is.

4. Peter Cullen

Never watched the Donkey Kong cartoon, so I don't have much to say about Peter Cullen's take on Mario. While Peter is the very first Mario voice actor, he's not the best one. To be fair, Mario's personality wasn't yet established back in the early 80's, so for what it is, it's alright. It's a bit weird to hear Mario with no accent here, but that just makes it amusing in a way.

5. Walker Boone

I didn't like Walker Boone's voice very much. Too rough to listen to, though it does make Mario sound kinda funny (intentional or not). It’s not a bad voice, but it's not as good as Lou Albano's.

6. Unknown

What an odd voice here. I'm glad this was never used again to be honest. Mario sounds kinda like a street gangster in a few areas.

7. Marc Graue

Sigh...this guy. He makes Mario sound ridiculously gruff with awkward acting. The only positive I have for Marc is how his lines became popular in Youtube Poops. Otherwise, this voice was so dumb to listen to (no offense to Marc or anything).

Charles Martinet and Lou Albano are my favorite voices for Mario, with Charles being a bit more suiting.

Lou Albano is my favorite. He just captures the "essence" that is Mario. Walker Boone is a close second, though he was definitely more gruff than Albano.

Charles Martinet is good too, although I'm not sure his exaggerated delivery would be suited for long periods of time.

Peter Cullen wasn't necessarily bad, but there were little distinguishing characteristics to his Mario, which meant his Mario voice was pretty generic. Though to be fair, that's partially because Mario was a pretty new character at the time.

Marc Graue sounded like he was trying to imitate Walker Boone but the voice just doesn't work.
