Voice Compare » Street Fighter » Ryu
Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Ryu with sound clips and images.
The lead character of Street Fighter. Ryu is a martial artist with a serious, stoic demeanor, and one of the most powerful fighters in the world.

EDITOR'S OPINION
Happy 4th of July everyone! Yeah I know its kind of oddly ironic for today's VC to be on a Japanese Martial artist but still. Anyways whether you find him to be an awesome personification of Fighting spirit or one of the most boring one-dimensional leads ever, he definitely has an iconic presence in his genre. However how he stands in this Voice Compare is not that great. While I certainly don't hate Tong Lung's performance as Ryu its not one of the better examples of the show's voice acting. (But to be fair Tong did have a fairly good scene or few.)
Skip Stellrecht voiced Ryu in the English dub for all the 90's SF Anime (The Movie, II V and the first Alpha anime). And personally I thought he was the best Ryu out of the four but to be fair he got to be Ryu longer than the other three so that probably helped.
However Richard Cansino got to voice Ryu in the 2nd Alpha anime namely Generations and he comes off as somewhat miscast. Don't get me wrong Cansino is a good VA but I liked him better as Vega.
And last but not least is Kyle Hebert, while I admit when it comes to Street Fighter roles he could have got Ryu is not exactly at the top of my list. However Kyle doesn't feel miscast as Ryu to me so it still works.
I may have had a hard time to decide before but I am clearly going with Skip Stellrecht this time around.

Skip, followed closely by Kyle.
Though I do wonder what would happen if Jason David Frank (The original Green then white Power Ranger) would voice Ryu...
Same time, Skip and Kyle are awesome.

@Aussieroth Well instead of saying Shoryuken he would make loud noises that I'm not sure can be accurately translated to text.

I'm going with Skip. He sounds strong enough without sounding too old.

"I AM the world's greatest pillow fighter!"
I think I should quote something from the Street Fighter animated series for nearly every character who appeared in that blasphemy. Otherwise, I do love the performance Hebert gives for Ryu, but it's easy to just go ahead and give it to Skip, himself... I don't know why, though.

#1 Skip Stellrecht
He is not only the best VA for Ryu (at least IMO), but his voice is the only one who I really feel suits the character. Full of energy and determination, he certainly established Ryu's greatest virtues and brought the character to life. And like u1 and rustyshackleford said, there MUST be a better representation of Skip's amazing performance.
#2 Kyle Hebert
He's a distant but decent second. He does stay true to the character, but IMO he sounds quite forced and one-sided. That's not a really bad thing, per se, but I think he can do at least a bit better. His voice for Ryu is growing on me, but it'll never even compete with Skip's.
#3 Tong Lung/Richard Cansino
The other two just don't fit the character. Tong's acting was pretty iffy, and like Pokejedservo and d20watt said, Richard was much better as Vega.

My favorite for Ryu has to be Kyle Hebert. And he IS gonna return as Ryu in MvC3.

I think Skip and Kyle are the best ones.
Richard is cool. But just like Pokejedservo said, he's a lot better as Vega.

That, Woo! Woo! Woo! Was not Ryu! That was Fei Long!
Those clips are very miss leading for the proformance Skip gave.

To be honest, I don't think any of them really strike me as Ryu. I figured Ryu would sound a lot more calm. These guys all put a macho tough-guy spin on him which, to me, doesn't suit the character.

Skip has Ryu's voice down perfectly. He is a great guy and a great voice actor. Kyle Hebert doesn't do the best job of Ryu but I guess he felt satisfied with the voice because he was very excited to be playing anyone in SF4 even before he knew it was Ryu, so I respect him for that much. He still does an amazing job on a lot of stuff he does though like Gurren Lagann as Kamina and Ganju and so forth. The other two really don't strike me as Ryu.
