Star Wars Star Wars

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Yoda with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Star Wars

Yoda is the most legendary Jedi in the Star Wars universe. He is timeless and the wisdom and knowledge he possesses is invaluable.  He also is known for his 'backwards' speech patterns.

In all of the live-action films, Frank Oz has provided the voice. Tom Kane has been the 'animated' or 'video game' voice of Yoda.  Muppet Babies star, Greg Berg dubbed the voice of Yoda in one episode of Muppet Babies.

This one is fairly easy in my opinion. Frank Oz IS Yoda end of sentence.

1st: Oz, 2nd: Kane, 3rd: Berg

Frank Oz is THE character here. He gives Yoda this atmosphere of a goofy yet wise Jedi master who gives Luke the training he needs. His voice is pretty fun to imitate, even if it’s just an elder Grover.

Tom Kane is a good replacement, but I liked him better in the 03 series than recently. I don’t know, I think he shouldn’t sound too serious.

Tony Pope has the voice right, but maybe it’s a little too high and goofy. Still, he gets the wise part well.

Greg Berg is basically Fozzie Bear except way goofier. It works for the show, I suppose.

Peter McConnell sounds way too gruff and hoarse, not a good Yoda. Also the song gives me nightmares.

VC thoughts update

For me, it's a tie between John Lithgow and Frank Oz. John did a fantastic emulation of Frank in the NPR radio dramas, but he also made the role his own. He really nailed the goofiness of Yoda when Luke firat met him, and then he managed to make the change into a wise and stern Jedi master really well. It's one of John's most unique roles and I wish he could reprise it.

Frank Oz is really iconic and with good reason. He just nails the character's wisdom and sagely qualities and he also added quite a bit of humor on some scenes.

Tom Kane does a good impression of Frank, but I felt that his delivery could get a bit weird at times (especially in this clip).

Greg Berg works for what Muppet Babies was going for.

Tony Pope is okay, but he sounds kinda weird.

Peter McConnell leaves little to no impression on me. He's at the bottom.

1. Frank Oz
2. Tom Kane
3. Greg Berg

Frank Oz originated the voice and made the character sound both wise as well as knowledgeable at the same time as a mentor of sorts, Tom Kane channels his performance well but is slightly deeper, and Greg Berg's performance is pretty much a silly, parody like rendition of the character.

Frank Oz is definitely the best Yoda. He gave us the unique distinct voice and speaking pattern he has or rather speaking pattern, unique distinct voice he has. *sweats* Yoda speak isn't that easy. It was such a treat that he reprised for Rebels when they could have just got Tom Kane to come back and go to lunch.

Speaking of which Tom Kane is also pretty dang good as Yoda if I do say so myself. He's deeper and more calm but its still a great impression. He did a fantastic job in both Clone Wars cartoons and the Lego Star Wars specials.

Greg Berg is just hilarious, yeah he does sound too silly sounding but It's the Muppet Babies so I can't really fault it.

Even though he isn't here, Peter Kelamis does a decent Yoda.

and finally I really want to check out the NPR Radio Drama now since apparently John Lithgow had voice Yoda in it. That's such a bizarre casting but I've got to hear it someday. Lithgow is a great actor so it should be interesting to say the least.

I shall be voting for Frank Oz.

@Autovolt If Eric Jacobson counts ( http://youtu.be/XWVA76BdU7s at 1:11), I'd say he'd be below Kane but above Greg.

Not bad for Oz's successor, but he could pull off a better Yoda if Oz and Kane are gone. Right now it just sounds like Fozzie.

I'm just going to be the first one to say that I don't like Yoda's voice in general. It's just so weirdly forced and...just...weird. Wise it does not sound. Very awkward it is.

Frank Oz all the way, but Tom Kane is a pretty good replacement, and Greg...well, it was hilarious for the wrong reasons, at least.

Once again, hard to choose, because they're all superb, but Frank Oz really takes it home.

Frank Oz is Yoda, we can all agree on that. I'm gonna be that one guy, though, and say that Tom Kane was actually not a half bad replacement.

Frank Oz, my choice is. Yoda, he defined. One of the most memorable characters in the STAR WARS saga, Oz made him. (Hey, I'm talking just like Yoda while writing this!)

I wonder if Jeff Bennett would make a good Yoda?
said at 7:01 AM on Sun Oct 13 2013
@Finister2 I never thought about it but it's a good idea as Jeff does well in almost all his roles + he has an excellent voice.

Here's one thing I don't get. Why is Greg Berg on here. I mean wasn't the Muppet Babies Yoda is consider to be a parody character. If so then why is he on here. I thought We don't include parodies in voice compares. Other then that here's my rank;

1. Frank Oz
2. Tom Kane
3. Greg Berg
said at 11:45 AM on Tue Aug 12 2014
@WWEFAN12ization For that matter, why are we including voices of characters from "Lego Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles" in the Voice Compares of this franchise? Those are clearly meant to be parodies, and nothing serious.

Granted, I personally don't have a problem with it, and it does add more variety, but it does seem a tad inconsistent with the site's policy.
said at 11:24 AM on Sun Jan 1 2017
@WWEFAN12ization He's probably there cause Disney owns Marvel (who created/produced Muppet Babies) and Lucasarts (obvious)

I'm voting for Frank Oz, without him we wouldn't have the iconic Yoda voice that all the other actors imitate for him.

Tom Kane, for what its worth, does do a pretty good impersonation of him.

...and why the heck was he in Muppet Babies? O_o

@pete It wasn't really that different.

Anyway, I'm voting for Frank Oz, but Tom Kane is also a really good replacement. Greg Berg is too goofy, but what can you expect since it's not the most serious interpretation.

@NCZ It was jst ind of goofy in the originals in the prquels it was more serious like II AND III

@SupremeTarantulas Very very late, but Disney owns Marvel (animated Muppet Babies), The Muppets, AND Lucasfilms, right? I think in hindsight, it sounds like it could be declassified as a parody.
