I think just saying James Earl Jones is the best simply because he's the original is pretty weak. It also does him a huge disservice because James Earl Jones IS the best Darth Vader in his own right.

The problem with really any of these other Vader performances is that their acting becomes constricted and monotone either because they pay too much attention to just the voice or they physically can't act out more without losing the deep voice. James Earl Jones' voice is just naturally deep so he can act without having to worry about it. Just listen to how he sounds when he tells his men to tear the ship apart in the clip above. Or how about the scene in Empire where he asks Luke to join him? None of these other actors give a performance that dynamic. They're all relatively flat in comparison.

@Metabad To be honest, this mostly applies to the Looney Tunes voice compares. Not all of them, but a select few.

For example, with Tweety in particular, even though Mel Blanc's voice was sped up a lot(as was most of his successors) the voice sounds completely unique from all of the other core Looney Tunes that Mel voiced. I feel in that situation, none of them were able to live up or even surpass Mel. Some of them don't sound as natural when the voice is pitched up that high(Jeff Bergman & Billy West) and others sound too similar to other characters they have voiced(Joe Alaskey & Bob Bergen

Anyway I go into detail on the Tweety voice compare myself, so if you wanted more insight on what my opinions & rankings are, just go there if you're curious.

For me, it's a tie between Brock Peters and James Earl Jones.

Brock Peters is the voice I imagine coming from Vader when I read the Marvel Star Wars comics. Because this is radio, Peters has to act and make the character move just by using his voice, which has always been the purpose of voice acting. His voice has a great commanding presence and his performance is top notch.

James Earl Jones does a good job as well. His voice does have tons of presence and his delivery is solid. He is just iconic in the role.

Phil LaMarr is hilarious in the role. He fits for what the Lego specials were going for, and he has great chemistry with Rob Paulsen's George Lucas.

Matt Sloan also sounds great in the role. He does a pretty neat impression of James Earl Jones.

Clint Bajakian also sounds pretty cool.

Scott Lawrence and Eddie Pittman are okay, but not too memorable.

James Earl Jones hands can't believe it been 40 years since he first the character and still manage to bring regal, pain, and menacing into his performance

Matt Sloan and Scott Lawrence are also good

Side note : Major Attaway, Beau Billingsley, and Blu Mankuma would make good choices for Vader

Yeah, James Earl Jones. No competition.

However... For the man who was the closest to imitate his performance: Scott Lawrence (God I hope he returns to doing work in animation someday soon).

The one who made it more his own and actually got it to work: Matt Sloan (I wouldn't mind to see him go outside of Star Wars and try characters for something like Final Fantasy or Dynasty Warriors).

James Earl Jones's Darth Vader is one of...if not the greatest villain voices of all time. He's menacing, he has a commanding yet terrifying presence and the voice just sounds awesome. I like that he has a slight English accent thrown into the mix. It's not hard to see why Darth Vader was not only one of the breakout characters of the original trilogy but also the poster child of the franchise.

Darth Vader's voice is so iconic that its not hard to see why people love to imitate or parody it. The few other voices Vader has had are decent efforts, even if they aren't even close to JEJ.

Matt Sloan is usually a mixed bag IMO. Sometimes he sounds friggin' spot on and sometimes he sounds nothing like JEJ. I personally think his best performances were in the Lego Specials, he sounds great there....I wish he could keep up this level of performance more often.

I honestly find Scott Lawrence and even Eddie Pittman more spot on sounding.

Phil LaMarr is really enjoyable as Vader in the Padawan Menace even if he sounds more recognizably himself and he had some funny chemistry with Rob Paulsen's George Lucas.

Clint Bajakian is probably my least favourite. He's not awful but I find his take the least interesting to listen to.

I really want to hear more of the late Brock Peters as Vader in the NPR Radio Drama's. It's a shame he cannot be counted here as I feel he has more of a presence than most of the other actors here excluding James Earl Jones.

So in the end James Earl Jones will get my vote simply because he just makes...NO IS Darth Vader.

@Autovolt "I like that he has a slight English accent thrown into the mix." Maybe James has a midatlantic accent (or at least used it as Darth Vader).

@Nightmare Crusher It seems that my comment was a little bit poorly worded. I'm fully aware that he's from Mississippi, but people can learn how to talk in a different accent. He did have a stuttering problem, so maybe he intentionally starting talking in a midatlantic accent most of the time as a way to try and get over the stutter (keep in mind I'm just guessing, and Darth Vader isn't really the only character I remember hearing portraying with the midatlantic accent).
Nightmare Crusher
said at 5:51 PM on Thu Jan 21 2016
@Jacob M. Keene I don't see how speaking in a Mid-Atlantic accent would do anything to help with a stutter. Vader doesn't even sound like that. He has this slight, affected English accent. Quite a few of the characters in the original Star Wars do since they used a heavy mix of American and British crew.

James Earl Jones IS this character, and all of the other actors are just trying to imitate him. Of course, that's the right thing to do. Unlike a character from superhero comics or cartoon characters like the Transformers, all of Star Wars takes place within one universe. There aren't numerous interpretations of Darth Vader, there is ONE Darth Vader, and when you can't get JEJ, you have to hire a soundalike.

That said, while JEJ is obviously the best one here, Matt Sloan takes the cake for getting the closest to JEJ's interpretation. When I played Force Unleashed, I thought JEJ had lent his voice to the game, it was completely indistinguishable. The rest, I would be able to tell.

I'll be honest here, while I can't deny James Earl Jones truly set the standard for Vader's voice, I like Matt Sloan's performance a bit better. So my vote goes to him.

@Metabad it's David Prowse doing the voice before the voice over. It's actually pretty good. I read it in the book called "The Complete Vader" that the only reason for the voice over was because David's voice was muffled inside the mask. This is what he said to Lucas:

David: What are we going to do about the voice?"

Lucas: Don't worry we'll re-record all your lines."

David thought at first that he was going to re-record the lines & it wasn't until after the premiere did he realise that Vader's voice had gone to James.
said at 8:06 PM on Sat Mar 8 2014
@Metabad Now that I think about it...after watching Spaceballs, I'm pretty sure David Prowse's performance inspired Rick Moranis' voice for Dark Helmet.

...annnnnd now I love that voice but for all the wrong reasons.

The original Darth Vader wins this easily, but with Chad Vader as a close second. Scott Lawrence is also surprisingly good in the role. TC Carson, however, sounds TOO deep, and the UVA cannot act to save his life, thus there's no presence there.

I never knew Darth Vader was voiced by anyone other than James Earl Jones. Inspires me to make up my own Darth Vader parody. If different, it'd be like a dinosaur, say Vagaceratops because the first two syllables kind of sound like the word Vader. They may sound similar to Jones, but they don't have nearly as much natural charisma or emotion. They all sound(with the exception of Matt Sloan) very robotic and uninspired. Vader may have lost a lot of his humanity, but he still has a personality and most of these voices are so wooden that it actually makes Darth Vader seem stereotypical. Sloan is the only one that actually sounds like he's trying and does a pretty good job, nothing on James Earl Jones of course.
said at 5:13 AM on Mon Feb 20 2012

James Earl Jones is the best IMO since he sounds really natural when speaking. The voice changes strait from Hayden C's voice to James Earl Jones's voice after he gets the suit in Episode 3 and then in episode 6 his voice changes again when his mask is taken off judging from that its obvious that the deep voice is supposed to be the result of some kind of voice filter in the mask. So by having James Earl Jones use a voice very close to his natural speaking voice it lets him give off a very natural performance, so when Darth Vader speaks even though his voice sounds deep almost robotic it still sounds like theres an actual person behind the mask speaking. As for the other voices their kinda meh to decent since it seems like the only character trait they put in is a deep voice.

If you want you can add David Prowse to the VC. IIRC there's a youtube video in our news archive of his voice (a behindthescenes feature from the DVD extras).

While he never officially voiced him in any movies it's ok to bend the rules here.

e.g. Frank Frankson's Yami Yugi voice in a Yu-Gi-Oh! commercial or Mitchel Musso as Aang in Avatar: The Last Airbender original pilot
