The Dark Lord of the Sith: Darth Vader at last joins Voice Compare.  In the movies, Darth Vader was portrayed physically by David Prowse (save Revenge of the Sith, where he was portrayed by Hayden Christensen), while his voice in each appearance was provided by James Earl Jones.

This is a bit more difficult to choose from, as after James Earl Jones gave Vader his iconic voice in the films, each actor afterwords has been trying to replicate Jones.  Which honestly, each one does a pretty dead-on job with imitating the voice.

Though for me, you can't beat the original for my top favourite.

James Earl Jones IS this character, and all of the other actors are just trying to imitate him. Of course, that's the right thing to do. Unlike a character from superhero comics or cartoon characters like the Transformers, all of Star Wars takes place within one universe. There aren't numerous interpretations of Darth Vader, there is ONE Darth Vader, and when you can't get JEJ, you have to hire a soundalike.

That said, while JEJ is obviously the best one here, Matt Sloan takes the cake for getting the closest to JEJ's interpretation. When I played Force Unleashed, I thought JEJ had lent his voice to the game, it was completely indistinguishable. The rest, I would be able to tell.

I'll be honest here, while I can't deny James Earl Jones truly set the standard for Vader's voice, I like Matt Sloan's performance a bit better. So my vote goes to him.

@ShadowPirateX If you haven't already, you should see a web series titled "Chad Vader: Day Shift Manager," which was created by Matt Sloan himself (and where he does the voice of Chad Vader)! And this series may also be the reason why he got to voice Darth Vader in some things too!

I know the site doesn't cover radio shows and audio dramas, but it really saddens me that Brock Peters isn't in this VC. Not only does he makes a great James Earl Jones impression, he also makes the character his own.

James Earl Jones is how everyone thinks of when they think of Darth Vader so he gets my vote. Matt Sloan does sound a lot like him. He does a really good job. Scott Lawrence and TC Carson do sound good and are suitable for the role. Unknown is so-so.

I think Jonathan Adams should voice Vader in something. He does sound a lot like Jones.

James Earl Jones, simply put, is Darth Vader (Yes I know he's not the guy in the costume).

Now for the replacements, they all work just fine for me, but Matt Sloan is my favorite as far as successors go for this role.

1-: James Earl Jones: Duh, he defined this character.
2-: Matt Sloan: The perfect successor to James, he sounds almost exactly the same as him.
3-:Scott Lawrence: Another surprisingly good soundalike.
4-: Terrence Carson: Not entirely bad, but you can clearly tell it's just TC's normal voice with deeper effects.
5-: Meh, alright I guess but the low quality effects are too distracting and he lacks presence.

@risingson It's not because I think he sounds like James Earl ones, it's simply that I think his normal voice is deep and Vader like. Especially when he plays Shreddr in the current TMNT. Though Johnathan Adams would be good too.

To think that his voice could have almost been this is both hilarious and terrifying.
said at 1:27 PM on Mon Nov 11 2013
@Metabad it's David Prowse doing the voice before the voice over. It's actually pretty good. I read it in the book called "The Complete Vader" that the only reason for the voice over was because David's voice was muffled inside the mask. This is what he said to Lucas:

David: What are we going to do about the voice?"

Lucas: Don't worry we'll re-record all your lines."

David thought at first that he was going to re-record the lines & it wasn't until after the premiere did he realise that Vader's voice had gone to James.
said at 8:06 PM on Sat Mar 8 2014
@Metabad Now that I think about it...after watching Spaceballs, I'm pretty sure David Prowse's performance inspired Rick Moranis' voice for Dark Helmet.

...annnnnd now I love that voice but for all the wrong reasons.

The original Darth Vader wins this easily, but with Chad Vader as a close second. Scott Lawrence is also surprisingly good in the role. TC Carson, however, sounds TOO deep, and the UVA cannot act to save his life, thus there's no presence there.

James is brilliant no matter who voices vader.

Scott & TC sound nothing like vader but Matt did an ok job.

The unknown voice actor is just Scott I bet.

I never knew Darth Vader was voiced by anyone other than James Earl Jones. Inspires me to make up my own Darth Vader parody. If different, it'd be like a dinosaur, say Vagaceratops because the first two syllables kind of sound like the word Vader. I bet it would be ironic to hear Mark Hamill play as Darth Vader, don't you think?

I could sit here fanboying about James Earl Jones for hours, or I could just say I'm voting for him and that Matt Sloan does a good impression... I'll go with the latter.

Matt Sloan does very good, but this is one of the compares where it seems like no one will ever match the original. James Earl Jones was incredible, end of story.

@Lpfan120 I looked up the Quan Chi voice compare to hear Ronald M. Banks' version, and I do agree that he sounds a lot like James Earl Jones! I don't exactly agree with @Metabad or @PsychicVoiceSpy on him also sounding like or having similar speech patterns to Christopher Lee, I don't know I just couldn't hear any similarities to Christopher Lee, I was only hearing a similarity to James Earl Jones, but you two are entitled to your opinions of course.

They may sound similar to Jones, but they don't have nearly as much natural charisma or emotion. They all sound(with the exception of Matt Sloan) very robotic and uninspired. Vader may have lost a lot of his humanity, but he still has a personality and most of these voices are so wooden that it actually makes Darth Vader seem stereotypical. Sloan is the only one that actually sounds like he's trying and does a pretty good job, nothing on James Earl Jones of course.

James Earl Jones is the best IMO since he sounds really natural when speaking. The voice changes strait from Hayden C's voice to James Earl Jones's voice after he gets the suit in Episode 3 and then in episode 6 his voice changes again when his mask is taken off judging from that its obvious that the deep voice is supposed to be the result of some kind of voice filter in the mask. So by having James Earl Jones use a voice very close to his natural speaking voice it lets him give off a very natural performance, so when Darth Vader speaks even though his voice sounds deep almost robotic it still sounds like theres an actual person behind the mask speaking. As for the other voices their kinda meh to decent since it seems like the only character trait they put in is a deep voice.

If you want you can add David Prowse to the VC. IIRC there's a youtube video in our news archive of his voice (a behindthescenes feature from the DVD extras).

While he never officially voiced him in any movies it's ok to bend the rules here.

e.g. Frank Frankson's Yami Yugi voice in a Yu-Gi-Oh! commercial or Mitchel Musso as Aang in Avatar: The Last Airbender original pilot
