Voice Compare » Star Fox » Andross

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Andross with sound clips and images.
Andross was a brilliant scientist formeely employed by the Cornerian Army. He took his research too far, and the disastrous results branded him a criminal, resulting in his banishment to the nearby planet Venom. After building a base and declaring himself emperor, he swore he would rule the Lylat system. Andross often appears as a gigantic head with two floating hands, and his main offensive method is to suck matter in and then violently exhaling it in the form of either rubble or metal tiles. His weak points are his hands and his eyes.

In Star Fox 64, he is voiced by Rick May in the English version of the game. He is voiced by Duncan Botwood in the Rare-produced Star Fox Adventures.

I can't get enough of Rick May's Andross. It's hard to describe, but his performance just radiates with arrogance and power. One of 64's best.

Dave White also has a very powerful voice, fitting for the inhuman monstrosity that Andross turned himself into. Unfortunately, his actual performance is oddly slow sounding, which makes it sound bland next to Rick. He's been improving though, Andross sounds much better in Zero than 3D.

Duncan Botwood really misses the mark. Hearing a voice that light and silly coming out of an absolutely massive creature like Andross is surreal. That kind of disconnect just does not work.

Rick May easily takes the top spot, he's so underrated. Yes there are vocal effects on his voice but he performs it so well that I just don't care.

Jaz Adams... His voice is perhaps the most fitting but LORD is his performance bland! That laugh especially was pathetic. However, I don't blame him for that at all. You can tell he knows how to act, just listen to him as Peppy. I think he just got the raw deal when it came to direction for Andross.

Duncan Botwood........ Yeah I have no idea what happened here. I don't know if he's a weak actor or if he got unfocused direction but this is just bad.

@Aussieroth I honestly agree with NCZ that Duncan's voice would be pretty good for a more comedic villian though. But other than that I agree with you completely.

@Aussieroth Even Conker the Squirrel's voice actor, Chris Seavor sounded a bit strange so...

If Jaz's laugh wasn't so underwhelming I might have Voted for him, but I'm going with Rick for this one.

This is quite easy to decide on. Duncan sounds pretty bad (which pretty much goes for most, if not all of Star Fox Adventures' cast), and while Jaz's effects are fine, the voice itself lacks the balanced take of Rick May.

Pretty obvious as to who I'm voting for.

I wonder what Rick May's voice for Andross sounds like without the vocal effects added?

@Jacob M. Keene Probably a more deep, gruff version of his Wolf voice.

@Ringworm128 Rick May wasn't Wolf. That was Jock Blaney.

@Ringworm128 @Nightmare Crusher Even if Rick did voice Wolf and his Andross voice sounded the same here, I'm not hearing any similarity to Wolf.

I could see Richard Newman doing Andross' voice. Think his M. Bison voice with a bit of Rhinox mixed in.

Duncan Botwood is too stereotypical mad scientist for the part, and Jaz Adams isn't mad scientist enough. Rick May had the perfect balance in his voice in terns of being both a mad scientist and galactic emperor, not to mention the echo and laugh were just chilling.

@Galactic_Cyrus Why they didn't bring him back for Adventures or left it alone in the 3DS remake... I don't get it.

@Galactic_Cyrus I might be wrong but wasn't Andross's laugh actually done by his Japanese voice actor Daisuke Gori? But yeah Rick May is by far the best.

# 1 - Rick May: Dat laugh....

# 2: Jaz Adams - A more than worthy successor to May, the only thing I don't like about Adams is the laugh, it's really underwhelming compared to May's.

# 3: Duncan Botwood - As Jon "JonTron" Jafari of Game Grumps fame would've said, "ECCH!!"
Sounds like this guy's been drinking one too many Johnnie Walker Blue Labels.

Ok, Jaz Adams' range is simply fantastic! On top of all the characters he played in 64 3D: his Andross was the best voice of them all! He added that necessary threat and deepness in his voice that Andross needs. My new favorite, but Rick May is still very good in this role too.

Jaz Adams is actually my favourite. He sounds the most sinister, deep, and threatening. He truly did a great job with all of his characters in the game. That said, Rick May has the better evil laugh and is still really entertaining.

Duncan Botwood would be GREAT for a more comedic villain, but unfortunately Andross isn't really that kind of character.

May only did his dialogue. All the voice clips heard during the actual battle are Daisuke Gouri's.

@rosebr10 Ah, I never knew that. Funny little anecdote, I never did make it to Andross in the N64 version. I'd always either get stuck somewhere (Titania, the one where they go to save Slippy - I hated that one!) or get bored. I blame the lack of a save feature...

I remember the first time I saw Andross take his brain form when I was a small child. "Only I have the brains to rule Lylat!" Although I laughed at his pun, I was, admittedly, a little frightened. XD

Well, I can't say that Duncan is horrible as Andross, but he just sounds hilarious.

I'd like to Vote for Rick May, he is the best with his deep, echoing voice. ''HAHAHA! You can never defeat me!''.

A shame Duncan sucks as Andross, I recently watched that cutscene on youtube and thought of how much better it would have been if the 64 voice actors were used, he has a pretty good design too.

My vote goes to Rick May, his voice sounds deep, demonic, sinister and it echoes too. It's pretty much everything you could ask for in an effective and menacing villain voice. Duncan just sounds like he had one too many beers that night.

Kudos to Rick May for doing such a good job in voicing so many characters!

@Metabad Jaz Adams has a cool voice, but I have to confess...I hate how he over enunciates almost every word he says. It ruins the menacing impact the original lines had IMO. That, and his laugh is incredibly underwhelming. To be fair that could be the direction at fault here, unfortunately his performance suffered because of it and I felt Andross was one of his weaker performances.

That said, Jaz is a HUGE step above Duncan Botwood, but I still feel Rick May and Daisuke Gori remain unsurpassed as Andross.

@Metabad Oh, one thing I forgot to add and I hate to say this...but Jaz's laugh kind of reminds me of Lex Luthor's laugh from Superman 64 which is not necessarily a good thing. I'm not sure if it was Clancy Brown voicing him in that game or not but let's just say that no one was at their best in that complete mess of a game.

Again though, I'd take Jaz over Duncan any day.
