Voice Compare » SpongeBob SquarePants » Mermaid Man

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Mermaid Man with sound clips and images.
Mermaid Man is a retired superhero who lives in the Shady Shoals retirement home. In his younger days, he appeared on an old TV show with his young ward Barnacle Boy. SpongeBob and Patrick are huge fans of this show, and consider the two heroes their idols. In his old age, Mermaid Man is rather slow-witted and laidback, though the slightest mention of evil sends him off the wall. His cynical, more intelligent partner Barnacle Boy is pretty much all that's keeping him in check. He's also ornery when his nap is disturbed.

EDITOR'S OPINION

I've can't not give this to Ernest Borgnine. His aged voice and withered-yet-enthusiastic delivery matched the character perfectly. I do appreciate that Joe Whyte and Joe Alaskey brought slightly different interpretations to the table, though Joe Whyte doesn't sound quite aged enough IMO. It's also kind of cool that Joe Alaskey is basically using a lower version of his Grandpa Pickles voice. When all is said and done, Ernest is the clear winner.

@MatthewC17 To me and probably many others that is an insult and very disrespectful, why did the crew do that? Joe Whyte is horrible he sounds nothing like Ernest, they should've just retired Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy

Yeah, Ernest all the way!! Joe A was pretty good though. I wonder who will replace Ernest voicing MM...or will the SB people retire the character or just forget about him (and Barnacle Boy) as they do on lots of cartoons? We'll see. RIP Ernest.

Sometimes you find a voice actor who delivers a performance that fits a character like a glove. Here, Ernest Borgnine did that voice. While Joe Alaskey did an adequate job for what it was, I felt Joe Whyte sounded like an obviously younger man trying to sound aged and it just came off as awkward.

Ernest Borgnine is absolutely classic! Joe Alaskey was pretty good as well, but I think Joe Whyte really missed the mark. His tone is too high and has no edge or gruffness to it. Doesn't even come close to the others.
