Mermaid Man

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Mermaid Man with sound clips and images.
Franchise: SpongeBob SquarePants

Mermaid Man is a retired superhero who lives in the Shady Shoals retirement home. In his younger days, he appeared on an old TV show with his young ward Barnacle Boy. SpongeBob and Patrick are huge fans of this show, and consider the two heroes their idols. In his old age, Mermaid Man is rather slow-witted and laidback, though the slightest mention of evil sends him off the wall. His cynical, more intelligent partner Barnacle Boy is pretty much all that's keeping him in check. He's also ornery when his nap is disturbed.

I've can't not give this to Ernest Borgnine. His aged voice and withered-yet-enthusiastic delivery matched the character perfectly. I do appreciate that Joe Whyte and Joe Alaskey brought slightly different interpretations to the table, though Joe Whyte doesn't sound quite aged enough IMO. It's also kind of cool that Joe Alaskey is basically using a lower version of his Grandpa Pickles voice. When all is said and done, Ernest is the clear winner.

1. Ernest is the best Mermaid Man
2. Joe Alaskey seems a close second
3. Joe Whyte

And Adam West did a good job voicing the young Mermaid Man.

1. Ernest Borgnine: This is the most iconic voice for Mermaid Man. He put a lot of energy of the character even for his age. All of his episodes he voiced in had a outstanding performance (not counting The Card, since it's just the same line repeated). Sadly, he's gone, but the writers had written out the character out of respect, which kinda sucks for no more Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episodes.

I'm tied between his other VA's. They tried their best to match Borgnine, but they're not that good imo.

1. Ernest Borgnine: A definite classic. He sounded aged, silly, fun-loving, crazy, and absent minded just like Mermaid Man was characterized to be in the Series. RIP, you will never be forgotten.

2. Joe Alaskey: He sounded appropriately elderly and absent minded, but he was a little too low and gravelly voice-wise in comparison to Ernest. Still, he was the best fill in, and he did a good job. RIP, again, Alaskey was another great talent.

3. Joe Whyte: He sounds senile and crazy, so he has the personality down, but that's about all Whyte has going for him. His voice doesn't fit at all: he sounds like a young guy trying to put on an elderly man voice, and it's rather grating.

Ernest Borgnine WAS Mermaid Man. The casting of Ernest was nothing short of brilliant especially with reuniting his old McHale's Navy co-star Tim Conway as his "young" ward Barnacle Boy. He sounds perfect as the old crazy coot superhero and his delivery of his lines is hysterical especially when he freaks out about Evil. Up until his passing back in 2012 he had a lot of energy for all of his roles and it really showed as Mermaid Man.

His replacement voices don't exactly 100% nail it as well as Ernest but of the two Joe Alaskey was a decent suitable replacement. He sounds more like Grandpa Lou Pickles but he does sound aged though he lacked that insanity and energy Ernest had still I believe Alaskey fit the role a bit more just based on his voice.

Joe Whyte sounds crazy enough but he sounds way too young and does not even sound anything close to Ernest Borgnine, he kinda sounds like Cam Clarke's Freddy. I have no idea if he's improved since then especially since he's supposed to be his current voice.

He's not on here but Adam West was also the voice of Mermaid Man when he and Barnacle Boy where younger and Adam was the best choice for a younger Mermaid Man. Tom Kenny may sorta count he was also a younger voice for Mermaid Man at least in his debut appearance. They both worked well for a younger voice of the two Adam is more fitting.

In the end It's obvious who the winner is, Ernest Borgnine! he has my vote and may both he and Joe Alaskey rest in peace.

Sadly, seems like we're stuck with Whyte. He at least has the spirit of Borgnine's take down, even though he still sounds nothing like an old man.

1) Ernest Borgnine- Excellent fit, he sounded comedic, funny, and could also sound serious too, and his delivery was spot on. May he R.I.P.
2) Joe Alaskey- Doesn't sound like Borgnine, but he does sound like an elderly man, though I'm hearing a bit of Grandpa Pickles in his voice.
3) Joe Whyte- Sounds like a younger guy trying to do a stereotype of an elderly man's voice, it's not good.

Ernest Borgnine is definitely the best, he gave Mermaid Man his old kooky craziness that everybody loved so much!

I'm a bit mixed on the other others have said, Joe Whyte sounds WAY too young, but I think he gets the voice itself down fairly well. It's not a perfect impression by any means but he seems to capture some of Mermaid Man's craziness in his performance, which is fine and all, it's just the young light sound of his voice that's admittedly a pretty major issue. His voice also sounds a little too high at times.

Joe Alaskey gets Mermaid Man's old age down MUCH better than Whyte does, but I don't hear Mermaid Man's quirky craziness at all in that clip. Maybe that was just a bad example of his work as the character, but either way he definitely seems like he needed to work on it.

If Joe Whyte took some cues from Alaskey's aged sounding voice, or better yet Joe Alaskey took cues from Whyte's crazy sounding voice, we'd probably have the perfect successor to Ernest Borgnine. But as it stands Ernest Borgnine originated the voice and made the character who he is and given his unfortunate death I doubt Mermaid Man is coming back any time soon. Although considering what I've heard about the quality of the recent episodes of the show, then maybe that's for the best.

So yeah, Ernest Borgnine is of course the best Mermaid Man, I'm incredibly mixed on the other two as I don't even know how to rank them alongside him.

1. Ernest Borgnine: I'm going to have to side with the majority here and vote for Ernest; his voice is simply great for the character, and manages to match his personality very well.

2. Joe Alaskey: He provides a pretty decent take as well. Impression-wise, it sounds quite different from Ernest - slightly more so than Whyte does - but by it's own merits, it's a different take that still sounds expressive and suits the character.

3. Joe Whyte: For a replacement, admittedly I didn't think Whyte was THAT bad. At least he has the weary line delivery down. Still, he's not nearly as easy on the ears as the other two are, and I don't think that he would be a suitable replacement for a larger role than he has in the Battle for Bikini Bottom video game. If there's ever another game or something that has Mermaid Man in it in the future, I feel that Alaskey would be a better choice for the role than Whyte would be.

I prefer Joe Alaskey because of his voice and tone.

Joe Whyte voice doesn't convince me that it's Mermaid Man. It's a very poor impression.

My vote goes to Ernest.

R.I.P Ernest, Mermaid Man will never be the same without you.

Joe Alaskey while not perfet suprisingly sounds a lot like Ernest Borgnine,he only need to put on a bit nore of the `frail, senile oldman` tone that Borgnine gave to the character.

Joe Whyte, falls flat, not only does he sound decades younger, but just listening to his voice out of contexst would you ever guess that was mermaid man

Acording to the wiki Whytes gonna voice mermaid man in future episodes of the show, and i really hope that was false informacion, they need to get Joe Alaskey back!

@DVJ I'm surprised at what I'm hearing from you considering you don't even like the show anymore and just complain about how it sucks nowadays and so on.

Nevertheless, I agree with what you said about them getting Joe Alaskey back as Mermaid Man.

@Dogman15 I don't get it. Why are we being told information that's not exactly true? If Mermaid Man has not appeared at all since Ernest's death then they can't just say some1 else is currently voicing him when it's not even happening.

I'm mildly disappointed here. Not because there's no good performance here (my vote's on Borgnine, BTW), but because they didn't use a scene for Borgnine's sound clip to where he says his most epic line of all:

Ernest was and always will be Mermaid Man but last year he sadly died at the grand age of 95.

Joe Whyte however is not and never will be Mermaid Man even if he is Borgnine's replacement in which should have gone 2 Joe Alaskey cause he sounds more like Ernest.

Most of you say they should just retire Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy but that wouldn't be fair on Tim Conaway so that is way they got a replacement.
said at 8:02 AM on Sat Jan 24 2015
@Ross123 Try the game Alaskey voiced Mermaidman, it's hilarious(Well the PS2/XBOX/Gamecube version not so much the PC or handhelds) and shows how good Joe Alaskey is at the character
said at 12:54 PM on Tue Jan 27 2015
@HienFan If you read closely, you'll see that I liked Joe Alaskey's performance and think that he should take over the role instead of Joe Whyte.
said at 9:03 PM on Tue Jan 27 2015
@Ross123 I know you said that but I just suggest trying the game if you like party games since watching the footages you get when you complete auditions are hilarious and similar to the cartoons
said at 9:48 AM on Wed Jan 28 2015
@HienFan Oh, I suppose I might check the game out. Though it's very unlikely as I rarely buy old games on previous systems anymore.

And I like Joe Alaskey's performance regardless so I might just check a YouTube vid instead.
said at 11:20 PM on Thu Jan 29 2015
@Ross123 If you can cause I have a hard time finding a video myself, I guess I should record the entire footage someday with all of the possible auditions since I have the 100% complete data(And let me tell you it is HARD to get past gold auditions)

I still have to wonder why did they hire Joe Whyte for two games for... since Ernest voiced him on the first game but after that... though they got Ernest before he died at least
said at 11:59 AM on Tue Feb 3 2015
@HienFan You don't have to record footage for the game. I'm not gonna put through playing it just to do something for me. Unless you really want to.

Besides, I liked Joe's voice as I said before. So there's really nothing that's gonna make me think better or worse about him.

Didn't know Ernest voiced Mermaid Man in one of the games since I never saw it on his page.
said at 8:12 PM on Tue Feb 3 2015
@Ross123 There's an unlockable where you can see those footage without playing the game when you have everything, that's the best thing for me cause I don't care for Sandy Cheeks to finish the game as her

But... 'SWEET MERCIFUL NEPTUNE WHAT IS THAT SMEEELLLL!?' that is the most hilarious thing Alaskey ever said (and my main reason for my vote)

But there's that other Joe... I had the computer game(no sample here) he voiced Mermaidman but I didn't judge because Mermaidman is delirious with cola in that game but jesus in the clip... he sounds too weak and I can't chalk that as sickness
said at 3:18 AM on Wed Feb 4 2015
@Ross123 On that note the best thing Joe Alaskey can do is ridiculously overblown reactions, they sound so funny when he does it
said at 3:21 AM on Wed Feb 4 2015
@Ross123 And I could joke that they chose Whyte to replace Mermaidman is because he's younger so they can have him longer(I have to question Nicktoons sometimes)
said at 6:35 AM on Sat Feb 7 2015
@HienFan Well I'll think about whether or not I should check the cut scenes from the game out if you say they're worth checking out.

Also, it's believed that Nicktoons retired Mermaid Man & Barnicle Boy since they have not appeared on the show since Borgnine's death, RIP to him.
said at 5:16 AM on Wed Feb 11 2015
@Ross123 Considering I have the weirdest taste ever, you might have to think about it very carefully though on the other hand we are 2/3rd of the people who prefer Hope Levy as that Melvin dude in Invader Zim

One thing for suuuure

If Nicktoon is never hiring Joe Alaskey, retire Mermaid and Barnacle boy I am not listening to Mermaid Man sounding like a 20 year old with Asthma
said at 8:46 AM on Wed Feb 11 2015
@HienFan I'm with you on that cause I sure don't want to hear Joe Whyte as Mermaid Man for the rest of the show's run.

And quick question, what does us voting for Hope Levy as Melvin got to do with this?
said at 11:31 PM on Thu Feb 12 2015
@Ross123 I meant our weird taste as a whole, that is just one sample I wanted to say a long time ago but anyways Mermaid Man, if the retired him eventually great
said at 6:10 AM on Sun Feb 15 2015
@Ross123 I guess I will say this we're 2/3rd of the people who didn't want Melvin to have the voice he have now and for this case no one wants Joe Whyte as Mermaid Man either(I think considering no one voted for him yet)
said at 12:26 PM on Sun Feb 15 2015
@HienFan Ok, we have weird tastes but so what. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Now back on topic, no1 wants Joe Whyte because, well I'm sure you already know why. By the way, in my original comment I mention why it would be unfair if they retired Mermaid Man & Barnicle Boy.
said at 1:33 AM on Tue Feb 17 2015
@Ross123 Unless you are a hardcore fan of MAINSTREAM(cough certain Funimation fans but it's another story)

Too bad Nicktoon must have liked Joe Whyte's voice since they probably thought a weak voice would be better for a senile old man I guess, I noted that Joe sounds a LOT more energetic than Ernest
said at 1:48 AM on Tue Feb 17 2015

Also on the mainstream stuff I was refering to how in some pages there's sometimes someone saying stuff like how can you not vote for *insert winner if the winner has an overwhelming number of votes*/list winner so low or vote for the choice almost everyone hates stuff, that's why I listen before I vote then I can tell if this so called good person is good on my ears or the so called bad person is as bad as the majority makes out
said at 2:13 PM on Tue Feb 17 2015
@HienFan Calm down now, I know which Joe you're talking about. Don't want you to go crazy over a little accidental mistake.

I'm the same, I listen then vote.
said at 10:16 PM on Sat Mar 21 2015
@Ross123 Considering Joe Whyte only has two episodes so far who knows they might get him replaced with Joe Alaskey, Whyte is better as younger characters
said at 10:47 PM on Sat Mar 21 2015
@Ross123 Scratch that found out those eps are recorded when Ernest was still alive, they just released it after he died.

Where did this Joe Whyte replacing Ernest came from anyway? There's no listed appearance of the character post Ernest so for all we know Mermaidman could be gone
said at 12:34 PM on Tue Mar 24 2015
@HienFan Don't worry, I was already scratching it out as I knew Mermaid Man & Barnicle Boy hadn't appeared since Ernest's passing in 2012 and that those episodes were released after his death.

I'm just as confused as you are with the whole Joe Whyte as Mermaid Man permanently thing. I almost forgot about it until you mentioned it.
said at 11:36 PM on Tue Mar 24 2015
@Ross123 Heard it's common to record long before release, so he might have a few episodes done and they could have retired him after all his episodes are done
said at 10:19 AM on Thu Apr 2 2015
@HienFan I forgot about that they record before release. Good point by the way.

So sadly, we will never see Mermaid Man again.

Sometimes you find a voice actor who delivers a performance that fits a character like a glove. Here, Ernest Borgnine did that voice. While Joe Alaskey did an adequate job for what it was, I felt Joe Whyte sounded like an obviously younger man trying to sound aged and it just came off as awkward.
