Well folks a while back we have Green Goblin's VC on this site so know we will be doing his (generally) more human counterpart Norman Osborn. (Sometimes the person who voices Norman will be the same as the one who voices Green Goblin but its not always the case. And we all know that there have been cases where we only see the Green Goblin but thats a different story.)

While in the 80's TV series Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends Norman was voiced by VA Neil Ross. In this Spider Man series is one of those that gives a nicer depiction of Norman (well before he becomes the Green Goblin) and Neil Ross did do well with that. (He also voiced Norman in the 90's Spider man series in which there is only a slight difference in voice. However unlike the 90's series Neil only voiced Norman in Spider Man and his Amazing Friends.)

In the Game based off of the Spider-Man movie, known Hollywood Star Willem Dafoe reprises his role in the game and I always did liked Willem's work in the movie and it shown in the game.

And last but not least is the latest take on Norman (and the latest one where Norman and Green Goblin are voiced by different actors) is fairly known screen actor Alan Rachins voices Norman here and does it rather well. Alan's work on Norman does give him a more cool and confident persona that maybe one of the meaner depictions of Norman but is capable of showing kindness as you can see here.

This is another one of those cases in which I am not sure which to pick as all 3 of these actors have done well for the role here.

Who knew that the voice of Spider-Man would fit one of the franchise's finest villains like a pin on a donkey?

Josh Keaton just completely nails the role getting the manipulative tone down making for a perfect Norman Osborn. My second favorite though Willem Dafoe is still at one for me.

Josh Keaton is amazing in the role. I like how he does it without any NY accent, which is the only thing preventing me from voting Dafoe or Rachins - yes, Norman is from New York, but I just don't see him as the accented type.

There are times when Josh's Norman voice itself doesn't click with me- he sounds like he should be a father to a child much younger than Harry is in the series- but the performance is impressive; he's got the authoritative, subtly manipulative tone down pat.

Wow....Who'd have thunk one of the best Spider-man voices would be just as equally awesome as one of Spider-man's greatest villains.

I mean, he nailed it. Absolutely Nailed it. Makes me wonder if the rest of the voice acting in the new show is as good. I didn't wanna watch it....but maybe I'll check it out.

My vote goes to him.

I'll be completely honest here: I like Josh Keaton's Norman better than his Spiderman. He's no Willem Dafoe yes but he does a fantastic job.
He's probably in third place behind Willem Dafoe and Steven Weber.

Josh Keaton makes for a great Normon Osborn. In fact it's even better than I expected. My vote goes to him. Who knew that the guy who once voiced Spiderman was also a great voice for Norman Osborn?

Josh Keaton is very good as Norman. I'm kind of glad that they chose him for Norman instead of Spider-Man.

Still sticking with Willem, though.

Honestly, Josh is my new favorite. He just has this charm to everything he says so when he is being manipulative you can understand why. He justs has this great businessman sense to him while adding a dash of fatherly caring without losing that slight edge.
Great show range for Josh, not many people could make a great Spider-Man and Norman Osborne.

I think my second favorite would be Steven Weber, he has many of he same characteristics as Josh but misses that same charisma.
Alan to me is too much of a jerk too much of the time, he lacks that subtle edge these two have.

VC thoughts update

Dennis Marks (incorrectly listed as Neil Ross here) sounds pretty good in the role. I really like how they made Norman afraid of his other side in the show and Dennis does a good job at making Norman more sympathetic.

Steven Weber is pretty good as well. He really sounds like a benign guy at first, but he also nails Norman's manipulative side.

Neil Ross was much better in the 90's Spidey cartoon than in the 81 solo one, where he sounded exceedingly forced and raspy. He really did a good job at making Osborn a shrewd manipulator.

Neil Kaplan also sounds pretty good. He does sound quite manipulative in the role.

Oddly enough, Willem Dafoe sounds much more energetic as Osborn than the Goblin. He really does a good job here.

Alan Rachins doesn't click with me at all.

Once again, Josh Keaton is much better as another character than Spider-Man.

He's just so charming, yet you can tell he's manipulative.

Fifth place.

I absolutely loved Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn. He was the perfect balance of a unhinged corrupt corporate executive but also a man who is slowly loosing his insanity and thus is a tragic villain. I find he has the most distinct voice and performance here and I'd love for him to reprise the role again someday.

Alan Rachins is a close second, he's far more calmer and in control and he pulls off the manipulative bastard angle to Norman perfectly.

Steven Weber is a bit more subtle in his manipulations and does come off as a benign kind of person which makes his treachery effective.

Neil Ross is alright, he was a lot better in the 1994 cartoon than the 1981 cartoon since he voiced a more amoral version of the character.

Neil Kaplan is the weakest one here but he isn't bad at all just not the most fitting.

Willem Dafoe has my vote.

BONUS: I'd love to see both Brian Dobson and Daran Norris have to offer as Norman Osborn. Another idea is James Woods.

Willem Dafoe has always been my favourite Norman Osborn. To me, he captures Norman's ruthlessness and psychotic side best, moreso as Norman gets fired and after having the chemicals injected into him.

But I also like Alan Rachins' take as well. He actually sounds a bit like Dafoe. But is more calmer and less psychotic. Definitely fitting for a more "tame" version of Norman, and a definite second place for me.

So for Spidey's biggest enemy, or at least his human side, here are my picks:

1. Alan Rachins. He's absolutely perfect in the role and really does a great job at making Norman Osborn sound like the ruthless businessman and horrible father he is (Though like it was noted above, he's also capable of being decent to Harry). I'd say he's a 9/10.

2. Willem Dafoe. He absolutely stole the show as Norman and the Goblin in the film, and this carries into the game. I loved how he was as Norman; a businessman struggling with a collapsing company and mental disabilities and came off as a decent guy though he had his issues. I'd say Willem was another awesome take on the role and he ties with Alan for a 9/10. I honestly would love to see him in the role again some day.

3. Neil Kaplan. Another solid take on Norman, not much to say here other than he was properly slimy and rude in his voice clip, and I feel that from what I heard that he makes a good Norman Osborn. 8/10.

4. Steven Weber. Not the most charismatic example, but he's still a rather decent choice for the role. He comes off as a decent enough guy while still being a bit cold to Harry like Willem was, but I feel that he lacks the presence that both Willem and Alan had. I'd give him a 7.5 because while he wasn't great, he was still a good enough performance.

5. Neil Ross. I feel that his Green Goblin was a lot better than his Norman Osborn in the nineties show, and while is Norman is a nice guy and all, he just doesn't do it for me like the others do and ultimately comes off as mediocre. I'd give him a 6/10 as he was not bad or anything, but he also just doesn't do it for me either.

@NoxiousSludge Eesh, I totally meant mental illness, not disabilities in Willem's entry. Note to self, never make posts in Voice Compares when you're dead tired!
said at 9:15 PM on Wed Apr 2 2014
Alan Rachins works for the role so well, he sounds so appropriately cold and calculating. He's just about pitch perfect for the character. That said Willaim Dafoe works almost just as well and is a well deserved second.

Neil Kaplan is decent if not a bit inconsistent and high at points. I can't really say I'm a fan of Neil or Steve.

That being said, my vote would instantly change to Jim Cummings if he ever officially voiced the character and were added.

Neil Kaplan is pretty good, actually, I must concede... but I've got to give it to Alan Rachins. He was smooth, he was stoic, he sounded powerful and he definitely got the cunning part down to a T.

1. Alan Rachins - The definitive Norman. He has the perfect voice for a smooth, stoic, ruthless corporate executive.
2. Wilem Dafoe - A very close second to Alan.
3. Steve Weber - A close third after Wilem. Has a very natural voice for Norma, but sometimes sounds a bit too refined and lacks the edge that the other two had.
4. Jim Cummings - Not here, but I'm including him anyway. His Shattered Dimension voice was a good fit for Norman, though opposite of Weber, this one's a little too rough and not refined enough.
5. Neil Ross - He never did it for me in either series. He sounds like a dork in the clip, and sounded like a kindly gentleman in the 90's show. He just missed the mark.

Alan is kinda the same really while they they should get a better clip of Neil cause he sounds better in animated series.

In the end its Steven while Alan is a close 2nd.

If only Willem Dafoe started reprising his role from the film like JK Simmons did. He does my favorite Green Goblin and he's perfect as Norman as well. However, since his role as Norman in the game didn't encompass as much of the character as Alan Rachins did, I'm giving my vote to Rachins. It would be cool to see Willem Dafoe reprise his role in voice acting again, but that's my inner fanboy talking and Alan Rachins was very good!

@PsychicVoiceSpy After re-watching the cutscenes from the Spider-Man game I'm changing my vote to Willem Dafoe. Alan Rachins is still very good, but I like how Willem sounds a bit more evil and unhinged whereas Rachins sounds more like a smug jerk.
