Alright folks here is another VC for a member of Spider Man's Rogues Gallery namely the Master of Illusion... MYSTERIO! Oh yes and since this is a VERY large VC it will take WAY too long to do a long detailed review so needless to say I am going to make this a short one. Most of them are very good but I think I like Peter Renaday, Gregg Berger and Robin Atkin Downes to David Kaye the most here. The weakest is probably Daran Norris whom is otherwise a good VA but his Mysterio voice is probably a little too high (at least James made a better effort in trying to get his to work. And Peter Cullen's work for Mysterio wasn't bad but his voice probably should have been a bit lower and well we all know he can handle that just fine.) Overall I am not entirely sure who to flat out pick as most of them did rather well with the role.

There are a lot of good performances for Mysterio.

Chris Wiggins: Chris has a weird delivery, but hey, I actually like how he delivers his lines.

Peter Cullen: Cullen is absolutely glorious in this role. Love the effects on his voice. Damn, I miss when Cullen got to show his range.

Michael Rye: Rye, while not as good as Cullen, manages to deliver.

Peter Renaday: Renaday isn't bad in the role, but he could be a little hammier.

Gregg Berger: A bit gruff, but he gives a good performance.

Daran Norris: I absolutely love how hammy Daran is in this role. He had the time of his life in this game.

James Arnold Taylor: While he has too much effects in his voice, JAT does a fine job in the role.

Robin Atkin Downes: He's decent enough I suppose.

Greg Baldwin: Doesn't do it for me.

Xander Berkeley: I know that Spectacular Spider-Man has a lot of good casting choices, but Berkeley isn't a good casting choice. His hamminess sounds forced.

David Kaye: Even if he's using his Megatron voice, Kaye is excellent in the role.

David Boat: Works for what it is, I guess.

David Sobolov: Too gruff.

Fred Tatasciore: A great take on Mysterio.

My vote probably goes to either Xander or Daran. Kaye sounds a bit too deep for Mysterio.

On a side note, I actually think Jim Sterling would be a pretty good Mysterio. He isn't an actor, but he's pretty good at hamming it up. Plus, he's a big fan of ol' fishbowl, so if he could take such a role, he would.

 3 Shout Outs!
1. Xander Berkeley
Since pretty much all the identities of Mysterio have been showmen of some sorts (usually either actors and/or special effects wizards), it makes perfect sense to make the character hammy and theatrical. And oh boy, does Berkeley ham it up as Mysterio. You can tell that behind that fishbowl is an actor who wants to make every minute count.

2. Peter Cullen
Very awesome performance. Cullen likewise goes very theatrical, but also has slimy - tone in his voice, which makes him feel very villainous.

3. Michael Rye
Rye might not be as hammy as the two actors above him, but he is still very theatrical. Just in little bit more subtle way. He also has very mysterious - feel (pun not intended) to him, which makes him kinda eerie.

4. Fred Tatasciore
Fred goes for more traditional supervillain personality, but is still suitably bombastic and gives the character clear personality of his own.

5. James Arnold Taylor
His SM2 voice is kinda just typical alien - voice, which makes sense considering that he is pretending to be an alien invader in the game, but it doesn't feel very Mysterio-like. I do love the energy and comedy he brought to the role, though.

His MUA - voice, on the other hand, works fine for the traditional Mysterio, but the performance could use more energy.

I would love to see JAT reprise the role one more time, so he could mix the energy of his SM2 performance with his MUA voice.

6. Peter Renaday
The voice is very cool and it's almost like something from Tony Jay. The performance could perhaps use more theatricality, but it still works and is overall above average.

7. Robin Atkin Downes
Robin is close to being pretty decent, but he needs that "something" to make his performance stand out more.

8. Greg Baldwin
The voice fits great (heck, it is nearly identical with Xander Berkeley), but the lack of material doesn't give him a chance to shine.

9. David Kaye
I'm sorry, I know that David is very popular Mysterio, but I simply don't like him in this role. It's cool villain voice, but it just doesn't fit Mysterio. His delivery is very dry and goes too much for typical evil mastermind - voice.

10. David Sobolov
Nice change of pace for David and I could see it working with more polishing. For now, it's just kinda OK.

11. Gregg Berger
This is really generic villain voice and it really could have been used for anyone. At leat Kaye had the cool factor going for him.

12. David Boat
Cute for more comedic version, but doesn't make all that big of an impact on me personally.

13. Daran Norris
Daran is clearly having ton of fun and the voice is VERY atypical for him, but he honestly gets really annoying really fast.

14. Chris Wiggins
Chris' voice is also really annoying and his acting leaves a lot to be desired. His laugh especially is very stiff and awkward.

Mysterio needs a over the top type of voice and here I think Peter Cullen surprisingly pulls it off the best. I mean who would imagine the serious and stoic Optimus Prime as the hammy Mysterio? the effects on his voice are excellent too.

David Kaye was my favourite voice here for a while now and while I still like his performance as Mysterio, it's ultimately his Megatron voice which works and is very theatrical but it's still a really enjoyable performance.

Chris Wiggins has a strange delivery and voice but it works really well for the role.

Daran Norris is extremely over the top and his laugh is great but it can get a bit grating at times

Michael Rye sounds great but I don't hear a over the top illusionist, still he has an excellent and cool voice.

David Boat sounds really arrogant for the role. He's pretty good for the most part even if I don't hear the illusionist aspect of the character.

James Arnold Taylor is a trying to fool everyone that he's an alien robot and it works for the most part.

Gregg Berger sounds too gruff and phony.

Peter Renaday sounds too stoic and calm.

Xander Berkeley and Greg Baldwin are in the same camp, they try to be hammy but in the end they come off as trying to hard.

David Sobolov sounds too gruff for Mysterio, same with Fred Tatasciore but the effects on his voice are nice.

I'm voting for Peter Cullen on this one.

BONUS: I'm amazed that in his entire career Tim Curry never voiced Mysterio? I mean yeah it's typecasting but why hasn't it happened, he'd be perfect. I could also see Alessandro Juliani pulling Mysterio off well too. Go and listen to his Reed Wallbeck from Dead Rising 2. That would be perfect.

1) Chris Wiggins: Once again, I have to agree with Galactic_Cyrus here: "his bizarrely hammy and almost unnatural delivery of his lines works perfectly for Mysterio". I really loved Wiggins in this role. He really seems to be having a ball doing this bizarrely hammy delivery, and he really has a great bombastic showman flare that I find most delightful.

2) Peter Cullen: Another great example of the spot-on casting of this show. Cullen really seems to be having a ball in this role. This whole episode was just a fun ride, and Cullen really got an excellent chance to show his range here.

3) David Sobolov: I kinda like his smooth attitude, and he has a decent amount of hamminess. An enjoyable performance, although a little bit limited in terms of material.

4) David Kaye: This is what Michael Rye should have been. Kaye does seem to be having a blast in this role, and my I really enjoy his hamminess.

5) Michael Rye: Although really well performed and with a great amount of hamminess, I can't help but feel that Mike was a little bit misdirected here. He could have done a lot better (listen to his Magneto), but as it stands, it's still a great performance that could have been better.

6) Gregg Berger: I really like the hamminess he added to the role, but he sounds too sinister at times. But even then, it's still a pretty solid performance.

7) Peter Renaday: Personally, I thought Renaday wasn't that bad. He plays him with a more sinister tone, but is good enough. Possibly the best performance in that game.

8) Daran Norris: My, he was really well used in this game. I really like his energy and his manic laugh.

9) James Arnold Taylor: I can tell he's having fun, but the effects are a little bit much at times. It still is fairly solid, though.

10) Robin Atkin Downes: Really enjoyed it. Fittingly hammy and pretty enjoyable overall.

11) David Boat: He makes me laugh a lot. I love his childish attitude, and he really seems to be having fun in the role.

12) Fred Tatasciore: Pretty solid. A little bit on the sinister side, but the hamminess is still there, thankfully. Also, the effects are pretty clever (I mean, seriously, they kinda sound as if they came from Tatasciore's throat at times).

13) Greg Baldwin: Decent. The hamminess is a little bit forced, but not to the point of sounding ridiculously awkward.

14) Xander Berkeley: Yeah... you can tell he's forcing the hamminess a lot. I'm really disappointed with Berkeley. I don't really think I like his take at all. He could have been so much better.

Ah yeah, Mysterio! It seems rather appropriate that my favorite comic book villain has had such great voice actors take the reins of his character. James Arnold Taylor's rendition of Mysterio's voice really hit home with me. I just love how it sounds, and I feel that it fits the character quite nicely, especially that version, who was under the alias of an alien.

1. Peter Cullen: I'm actually really impressed with Peter here, I can't hear Prime in his voice at all. It's the right mix of camp, menacing and effects plus is just a blast to listen to. Man I miss when Cullen got to show his range.

2. David Kaye: I think David needed some effects and amp up the camp a tad more but I think he got both the campy and sinister side. I did like he got "Beast Wars Megatron" when Mysterio went into "God Mode" in the game, it's where more of his camp came in (still needed a little more though). I also liked how at the end he gave a somewhat whiny voice and his voice even breaks which implies Mysterio's menace is all just an act. Not perfect and has room for improvement but is still great.

3. Fred Tatasciore: Fred continues to make great Marvel characters, he makes a great Mysterio. I think he needs a bit more in something, something that makes him stand out a little more. Maybe a little more campy, focus more on the "showman" part of Mysterio or maybe just the effects a little bit thicker. Still, Fred mixes Mysterio's cocky attitude with menace rather well and the effects fit nicely.

4. Daran Norris: Besides from being a tad too high pitched, I can't find anything that wrong with Daran's take. Nice effects plus sinister yet over the top performance. That said, it IS too high pitched which does bring it down a bit.

5. James Arnold Taylor: I understand why the effects are so thick and they work for what they were going for but they are a bit too much. That said, good overall but misses a certain "bite" to make the it more threatening.

6. Michael Rye: Yeah it is missing the effects and the over the top attitude but he makes it work. His voice is somewhat mysterious and threatening but a bit of camp that makes it not too serious. He's basically what Greg Berger and David Sobolov should have been. It's surprising that two pre-90's actors are so high on my lists, most performances from that time don't hold up to today's standards.

7. Xander Berkeley: Hamminess is pretty forced, sounds more like an actor's parody of a campy performance. There are times where he sounds threatening but doesn't have much going for it. However, I can't bring myself to say it doesn't fit but does feel more like a parody.

8. Greg Baldwin: The same thing as Xander but with less material it suffers even more.

9. David Sobolov: It seems David's growly voice does somewhat fit but I wish it was more over the top. Or maybe have Mysterio have that low and gruff voice and play off it with extra comical delivery and lines, there seems to be at least an ATTEMPT at that but kinda misses the mark. Plus it is hard to hear him with all the background noise.

10. Gregg Berger: While David's version at least attempted to make Mysterio fun, this takes him too seriously. Oh sure it is very menacing but without any of the fun he comes off as rather generic. Still, a really cool threatening voice from Gregg.

11. David Boat: Man I'm underwhelmed, David could have made a great Mysterio he's shown to do some great over the top delivery and done some good villain performances. As is, it's rather forgettable but there is potential in this take.

12. Peter Renaday: He sounds bored and lifeless, doesn't fit Mysterio. However, there is something in his voice that I can't but help enjoy a little.

13. Chris Wiggins: Yeah this is more in line to what I expected from that era. Chris' voice is forced and fake sounding with some really awkward delivery. That laugh especially sounds fake.

Time to rate the Master of Illusion's voice actors!

1. Xander Berkley: Safe answer since he is a voice actor on Spectacular Spider-Man, but his performance is just perfect. It has the right amount of regality to it that it suitable for a master illusionist, and the accent I feel helps sell it. I give it a 9/10. Fantastic, but not quite perfect.

2. Peter Cullen and Michael Rye: Both sound fantastic in the role as well. For one thing I could barely recognize Peter in the role: the high yet fancy sounding voice he gave for Mysterio is more of what I picture Mysterio sounding like when I read the comics! Michael's voice while not quite high sounding still sounds authoritative and impressive when he speaks up. Both are great on their own merits and both get not an 8, but an 8.5!

3. David Kaye: I'll admit that he's a tad lower than what most would give him, but to me I don't think his deep sounding voice is quite right for Mysterio. However, I still feel that it worked great in the end because he sounds almost perfect when he hams it up! Solid job here, going to give him an 8.

4. James Arnold Taylor and Daran Norris: Both of these performances I don't feel quite fit Mysterio has a whole, but still work quite well for their versions of the character. People complain that Mysterio from Spider-Man 2 overdoes it on the effects, but I feel it was intentional since that version's Quentin Beck is a pompous little twit with a smug sense if superiority, and given that he's pretending to be an alien conqueror I think it'd be natural that he'd overdo it on the effects to sound regal and otherworldly. Daran Norris' performance I feel is even less fitting for the character, but it's just so damn FUN to listen to! I just love how maniacal he sounds especially during that laugh, it's an all around solid performance that while I feel is unfitting, still sounds great enough to share a spot with James' performance. 7/10 for a solid job well done!

5. Greg Baldwin and Robin Atkin Downes: I can't really say much here, because both are serviceable but are mediocre sounding. I feel that Greg could do the role justice and the small bit where he talks in the clip is actually pretty good! Unfortunately, he doesn't say much so I can't really rate his performance all that well. Robin however has the regal voice down perfectly, but lacks the energy I'd associate with Mysterio. Both are okay, 6.5/10 is fair.

6. Chris Wiggins and David Boat: Neither are really that good, but not terrible or anything. David sounds okay for a sillier version of Mysterio, but his voice is still too deep for the role if you ask me. Meanwhile, Chris' delivery is a tad odd, but I can feel some potential buried in there. Both get a 6/10 because their performances aren't bad, but still leave much to be desired.

7. Peter Renaday: I quite like Renaday and find him to be an underrated voice actor, but like with Cam Clarke as Electro this performance is just disappointing because he could totally do a good job in the role, but thanks to what I assume to be shoddy direction he just sounds flat and uninspired in the clip. He does have the regal flair to his voice which sounds nice, so he gets a 5/10. mediocre performance: not good but also not bad, just a "meh" kind of performance.

When it comes to people who I think ought to take a crack at the role, I personally can see Rodger Bumpass being a good Mysterio myself!

@NoxiousSludge And I realized I forgot about Gregg Berger as well! I'd rate him at around the same Robin Atkin Downes and Greg Baldwin, a 6.5 as it's not a bad performance at all, but it doesn't fit Mysterio at all! It's way too deep and menacing sounding, so I believe that while it's a good voice, it's not a good Mysterio one.

David Kaye and Xander Berkley are both pitch perfect, as they take Mysterio's hammy, over the top persona, and still play to his villanous aspects to deliver a well rounded performance. I can't vote on this one, it's hard to figure out who I like more.

Gregg Berger works well for the surprisingly darker 90's cartoon version, and Darran Norris is enjoyable for the overly insane video game depiction. Michael Rye works almost as well as Xander and David, but he sounds a bit more generic. Not really feeling the rest, especially how the effects went overboard on JAT's voice.

@chaosincarnate Having played Spider-Man 2, I think that the effects were excessive on purpose since the game shows that Quentin Beck is ultimately an arrogant, pathetic buffoon with an overly inflated ego. I believe that he'd overdo it on the effects in order to try to make himself sound impressive.

@NoxiousSludge Replaying the game after a while, JAT's take has grown on me. Hearing him as Quentin Beck made me realize how awesome of a cocky Mysterio he is.

I feel David would work so much better, he has shown to have great campy delivery in other roles but he seems to be a little too serious for Mysterio

Dear God, what did I just listen to. David is the worst Mystrio voice I've ever heard, mainly because he sounds like Duffman & the voice doesn't fit the character at all. The lines even feel forced too. I'm sorry but it's just wrong to hear 1 of my favourite Spiderman villains sound completely out of character.

@HyperVoiceActing David Boat as I made this comment before Sobolov was added (scroll up if you want to see what I think of him) and Kaye is awesome.

 1 Shout Out!
1. Chris Wiggins - I personally think his bizarrely hammy and almost unnatural delivery of his lines works perfectly for Mysterio, and under different direction he could've been even better.
2. David Kaye - A perfect sounding performance. Sounds sinister and hammy in all the right places.
3. Peter Cullen - A similarly over-the-top yet evil sounding vocal performance, very threatening too.
4. Xander Berkeley and Greg Baldwin - Xander's delightfully entertaining in this role, but maybe a bit TOO forced in his hamminess. Greg Baldwin sounds almost identical.
5. Robin Atkin Downes - A more refined take on Mysterio that works well.
6. Michael Rye - Underrated. His voice was very fitting for Mysterio, and his delivery, while not spectacular, is solid.
7. Daran Norris - Does a more psychopathic take on the character than usual. Is a bit too high pitched.
8. Gregg Berger - I think he got the wrong kind of "mysterious." He barely sounds like a showman, just a purely sinister supervillain.
9. James Arnold Taylor - Apparently, this Mysteriou is a robot?
10. Peter Renadey - Flat as all Hell, which is SO not Mysterio!

@Galactic_Cyrus Daran Norris' Mysterio sounds a lot like Anti Cosmo from Fairly Odd Parents LOL

As much as I enjoyed Xander as the character, I think David Kaye turned in a better performance.

And even though it didn't fit Mysterio too well, I still enjoyed Daran's for some weird reason XD

@HyperVoiceActing You probably enjoyed Daran's take simply because he's so darn awesome. ;)

Daran was the 1st Mysterio i'd heard as I didn't really watch spiderman a lot until 2008 when SSM came on but I had the Spiderman 2000 game so i'm going with him.

James is 2nd though it's weird how David voiced the character as he is opposite James in Ratchet and Clank so maybe one day they will both switch roles.

Gregg Berger is better than Peter Cullen for a change cause when he takes a role from Cullen he isn't normally as good but for Mysterio he nailed it.

Xander is brilliant so he is 3rd.

Robin & Michael were also good.

Not really a fan of Peter Renaday or Greg Baldwin for this character.

Chris isn't Mysterio but I got 2 admit it's hard when u're the 1st person 2 voice a character cause you don't know how 2 voice it so in some cases I respect the fact that he tried.

My vote for #1 goes for Daran Norris because he nailed the fact the Mysterio was a wannabe actor, not some stage magician, or stage actor. He wanted to hit the big time and never succeeded because his acting was considered to loud and hammy, my second fave goes to Xander Berkeley, but like I mentioned, he sounds less like a wannabe and more like a stage magician or stage actor.

Personally, I prefer David Kaye as Mysterio. Yeah, it's basically his Megatron voice, but I feel it does suit Mysterio rather well, given both tend to be large hams, so I feel ti works.

What I like about Berkeley's portrayal is the element of comedy in it; usually Mysterio is played straight, but Berkeley is so over-the-top and flamboyant that it's honestly rather funny. His semi-British accent also serves as a nice contrast to his rougher, more blue-collar voice as Quentin Beck.

Xander's Mysterio (along with many, if not all the voices) sounds rather outlandish and just plain weird (rather foreign, actually, for someone named Quinton Beck), not to mention that he doesn't have the classic bubble-like sound Gregg's version has.
said at 3:37 PM on Mon Sep 3 2012

Actually, a lot of voice casting for Sepctacular isn't weird or outlandish. Also, Mysterio is a lrage ham by his nature anyway.

Besides, no offense, but you did vote for Erfem Zimbalsit, Jr. for Doc Ock, who gave the character a German accent, despite the character NOT actually being German.
said at 1:16 AM on Sat Jan 12 2013
@OminousFlare Actually all versions of Mysterio are British.

@Anicomicgeek He critcized it for being foreign when he's usually portrayed as British.

@Anicomicgeek I mean German.
said at 4:02 AM on Thu Mar 27 2014
@Anicomicgeek Who would you rather I vote for? The whimpy wet pussy that's in Spectacular? Yeah, because we know what the real Doc Ock in the comics would say to that piece of ****.

And as for another outlandish character, how about the Texan Shocker? And for weird, Eddie Brock being a homey big-brother type character instead of the menacing guy accurately portrayed in TAS?

Face it, Spectacular is just full of distorted characters that don't even fit their comic book counterparts. It's not even Spider-Man, it's just a spin-off.
said at 7:08 AM on Thu Mar 27 2014

Again, that sums up TAS Ock more than Spectacular's Ock ever did. Ock was ultimately a yes man for the Kingpin, so no, Spectacular isn't full of "distorted characters that don't even fit their comic book counterparts", and many fans agree with that.

In fact, given Ock kowtowing to Kingpin, Ana Watson being a harpy who blamed Peter for very little thing and May stomaching it, and Osborn panicking when the Vulture kidnapped him, it's more that TAS is the more that distorted characters.
said at 7:44 AM on Thu Mar 27 2014

I meant to say, "In fact, given Ock kowtowing to Kingpin, Anna Watson being a harpy who blamed Peter for very little thing and May stomaching it, and Osborn panicking when the Vulture kidnapped him, it's more that TAS had the distorted characters."

@Anicomicgeek And yet, you're referring to the details in the script, not the portrayal of the characters. Is this BehindTheVoiceActors or BehindTheScriptwriters?

There's little doubt that the VA for TAS' Ock is much more mature than Ock's kiddish voice in Spec (which is the same thing I could say for Josh Keaton, whose voice sounded way too young for a modern Spidey, but since Spec's set in high school, I'll overlook that). He sounded like an old man, which sounded more appropriate than the insecure high-pitched voice in Spec. FYI - Ock was already a megalomaniac even before the accident, check the comics. So that insecurity doesn't even apply anywhere for Ock's character.

It is key that Doc Ock should sound more like the TAS' megalomaniac version than the Spec's high-pitched psychotic version. We're talking about the guy who was once the Master Planner who had put together an entire gang of mobsters. I just can't see a guy like that with a high-pitched voice being the leader of a bunch of mobsters. I think the mobsters would die laughing before they would even begin to follow that stupid-ass voice around.
said at 10:26 PM on Sun Mar 30 2014
@Anicomicgeek Same deal applies with your statement of Anna Watson and Osborn - scripting details, not voice over portrayal details. But on the part of Anna and Norman, I could at least agree that the Spec's portrayal were much closer and more appropriate to the comic book versions than TAS. It's just a shame that Spec's Norman was a throwaway villain who's not the all-scheming maniac that he's in the comics. This is the guy who stole the Iron Patriot costume in Dark Reign, ****ed and then proceeded to kill Gwen Stacy in Sins Past and The Death of Gwen Stacy, and tried to make Peter Parker his son. I think we have a little bit of wasted potential here, people.

@TheVengeanceKnight Headbang into desk to you as well.

@Anicomicgeek And of course, Mysterio, who's supposed to be this mystical, mysterious (it's all in the name, hello?) and epic villain who utilises SFX to make himself look cool. Could we have someone who doesn't sound as cheesy as Doc Ock in Spec? My vote for Gregg might not be the best choice now that I look back at it, but I could say that at least even David Kyle's portrayal fitted the bill much more than the 'German Magician' in Spec. Honestly, I've never seen anywhere in the comics that Beck's been depicted as that exotic of a character that he would seem to have come from some faraway land like Germany. Now a British voice, that I could at least try and imagine.
said at 2:59 AM on Mon Mar 31 2014

He didn't sound German; maybe he was supposed to sound British, but he sure wasn't German. And Spec Norman wasn't a throwaway, but probably would've had more done had Spetacular not ended.

And BTW, you were the one who brought up the writing first when you mntioned Shocker and Eddie Brock.
said at 3:34 AM on Mon Mar 31 2014

And Josh Keaton was very good as adult Spidey in Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 and Edge of Time.
said at 10:17 PM on Sun Apr 13 2014

Lastly, some of the other elements you complained about in Spectacular has a basis in the Ultimate Universe.
