Voice Compare » Spider-Man » Lizard

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Lizard with sound clips and images.
(Note: This is only for the times that Lizard has actually had a speaking role which as you can see here has happened a lot.)

The Lizard is one of Spider Man's various foes whom has been a foe of Spider Man ever since The Amazing Spider Man Vol. 1 #6 in November of 1963. Lizard is the monstrous alter ego of Dr Curt Connors in which the Lizard was created by Curt Connors' Reptilian DNA experiments on himself. The Lizard is an incredibly powerful and vicious creature in which it has had an occasional sympathetic depiction (due to his alter ego Curt Connors), The Lizard is normally either a mindless savage or an angry creature that is against mankind.

Today on the Spider Man VC section we take another look at another prominent foe of Spider Man namely Dr. Curt Connors' monstrous alter ego... THE LIZARD! Since this is a rather large VC I will simply say that I am not sure which one of these guys will I pick for the role. Whether its the higher Lizard voices such as Dee Bradley Baker and Gillie Fenwick to lower ones such as Rob Zombie and Joseph Campanella they have all done pretty well for this role here in their own way.

Oh boy.The Lizard didn`t get the kindest treatment when it came to voice acting....

Steven Blum/Dee Bradley Baker- I`m putting them in first place, not so much for their actual performences,as much as for the fact that I know they could a lot better. They have a record of doing monstrous voices and raspy voices and I really hope that they get to reprise the role and do the character justice.

Joseph Campanella/Rob Zombie-They`re likely the strongest performances acting vise, even if they sound too human,i can see other people preferring it that, but i personally prefer the Lizard as more monstrous sounding.

Nathan Carlson-An okay monster voice,if somewhat forced.

Yuri Lowenthal/James Arnold Taylor- What the hell Marvel? You have 2 voice actors primarily known for their youthful voices, that have never voiced any monster or creature character and you cast them as the Lizard? Well big shocker, the`re pretty bad at it.

Watched 3 again cause I felt like it, and if fans hadn't wanted Venom so bad, and Avi Arad hadn't talked Sam Raimi in it, we probably have a much better, most of the flaws were symbiote Spidey's acting. I would have loved to hear Dylan's Lizard voice, it was already pretty creepy in his natural voice, , just tweek it a bit, plus the design was so freaking scary. long razor sharp teeth, and glowing red eyes, unless that was photoshopped, but it was on Marvel.com soooo....

Anyway I'd like Dee to do something like Dylan Baker's natural voice for Connors, and add some gruffness and growls to it for Lizard. My other choice for Lizard is Robert Englund though in this this case, unless they aged Connors, it wouldn't work as well for that role. I don't think Lizard should be that high of a voice, as that's just a generic monster.
said at 10:50 AM on Wed Aug 26 2015

No offense, but according to Raimi, the plan for the villain that Venom replaced was for it to be Vulture, not the Lizard.
said at 11:42 AM on Wed Aug 26 2015
@Anicomicgeek Oh, heard he was planned but I guess fans misinformed me, or some article did cause never read that. What did happen to him then?
said at 1:20 PM on Wed Aug 26 2015

It was on the commentary for the movie. And what happened in Avi Arad insisted on Venom being in the movie.

1. Dee Bradley Baker
2. Rhys Ifans
3. Joseph Campanella
4. Steve Blum
5. Nathan Carlson

Dee Bradley Baker is definitely the best here in my opinion, though he would benefit from some better dialogue. Carlson is also good; he probably sounds the most monstrous of all the ones here, but lacks the human side that some of the others have. Steve Blum did well, but would have been better if he could have done his own take rather than mimic Ifans. Speaking of Rhys Ifans, I really enjoyed his take, though I would have prefered it with a more Lizard-like design for his face in that movie.

I'm actually not too enthusiastic about the voices that are too monstrous, since they could belong to any "creature" type of character. I prefer takes that don't forget that the character's meant to be an accomplished scientist as well.

Having that said, I went with Campanella, though I like Ifans' performance as well.
The Doctor
said at 8:58 AM on Fri Sep 12 2014
@CatsTuxedo Thing is that the tragedy of the Lizard is that he was brilliant and gentle scientist that has been turned into mindless beast. More you make The Lizard sound and act like human, more you take away from that tragedy.
CatsTuxedo (Moderator)
said at 11:36 AM on Fri Sep 12 2014
@The Doctor I do get that point of view, but that also seems to take away from the character's sense of individuality; having him go too full-on monster makes him seem more like any old lizard rather than THE Lizard. A performance that incorporates the angry, bitter intellectual part of him helps him feel more like his own specific character.

On a semi-related note, I think that's probably why I prefer Ron Perlman out of the voices for Killer Croc; he went for giving the character his own personality rather than just going for a scary reptile voice that would go with any monster character.

@CatsTuxedo I see your point, and I agree with it (and on Perlman too). But I do think Baker, given the right material, could pretty easily convey both monstrosity and intellect. Ultimate Spider Man is just... not the right material for that, to put it diplomatically.

@Bookman230 Heck, I think he even displayed a little of this with his clip in the 2000 Spider Man game.
CatsTuxedo (Moderator)
said at 1:20 PM on Fri Sep 12 2014
@Bookman230 Baker is definitely talented enough to create a performance like that, but I can't help but feel like the casting director in all the cases he's been cast just went with him because he's the "creature guy", and the resulting performances kind of show that.
said at 2:15 PM on Fri Sep 12 2014
@CatsTuxedo Aye, aye. It's one of the most frustrating things when a truly talented VA is casted in something they could truly do some good work with based purely on typecast and isn't allowed to really let the magic flow.
said at 12:20 PM on Fri Feb 6 2015
@CatsTuxedo - I think you make some very valid points. Granted when you're talking about a "lizard monster" type creature it seems fitting that he should sound like one, but I agree a lot of performances seem to focus more on the beastly side of the character and not enough on the Connors side.

That being said, I still really like DBB's take as my favorite, but I also love Campanella and Ifan's performances for the same reasons as you mentioned.
said at 3:46 AM on Wed Aug 26 2015
@CatsTuxedo Connors reptilian alter ego has been portrayed a number of ways, but far more frequently as either a savage animal or an evil and monstrous split personality than simply a mutated Connor who is mostly in control, there for it makes more sense for the Lizard to sound less human otherwise your not gonna sell the tragic Jekyll and Hyde angle, plus its pretty of for a giant bipedal lizard to sound like a regular human.

Gillie is a bit too high in my opinion, plus when he does the hsss in his speech it sounds much more like he is slurring his words than it does sound like a reptilian sound. Not horrible, just not anything outstanding. 5.5/10

Corey is sadly very forgettable. For one of Corey's earliest voice acting roles, it's sadly very underwhelming. There isn't really anything to the voice that gives off this lizard like quality and really that's a voice that could fit on any generic thug, not the lizard. But it's not a horrible performance, it's just very unfitting for this character. 4.5/10

Joseph's rasp in his voice does fit the lizard and does add this kind of monstrous sound to the character, and it does give him a bit more of a creepy edge to his performance, especially the delivery of that first line. One of the better performances from the 90s series. 8/10

Dee's first performance for the Lizard is okay, a bit too high for my taste, but when Dee got to do the role again, it was just pitch perfect. Dee had the monstrous tone, had a bit or a raspy kind of sound to his voice and it did sound how I feel a reptilian like human would sound. 8.5/10 for the second performance

Rob does have a good rasp to the voice, my only problem is that it sounds too whispery for the Lizard. It does sound creepy, but it sounds like he is trying to sound really scary more than it sounding naturally scary. Like some other performances here, it's not a bad performance, I just feel that the whisper was a bit too much. 6/10

James I feel could've been a lot better. The main problem is that James make's it much more snake like than lizard like, plus I feel the voice is a bit too high for the lizard. I don't know if I'd call it bad, but it is a rather lackluster performance from James. 3.5/10

Nathan is just too goofy in my opinion. I remember that he was number 1 for the longest time and I never got it, I thought it sounded too dumb and the delivery is just hilarious, especially that last line. It's a performance that is to the point that it's so bad it's good. It's just so entertaining to listen to IMO, but it's not the best performance by any means. 6.5/10

Roger is okay, and I like that the lizard is more human like here, which I think is an interesting take. True I do think it is a bit hard to understand him at first since I think he tried to add a hiss at points, but it's still not a bad performance, and again it's a very interesting take. 6.5/10

I feel Steve does good at points, but at other times he sounds a bit awkward. Primarily the changing when he adds the reptilian rasp where it does sound a bit too awkward and not really all that creepy or scary. It's a role I feel Steve should have another shot at as I feel he could poll this role off pretty well if given the right material. 5.5/10

Yuri does a fun performance but my one problem is that it does sound a bit young and it is a bit too high. But he does at least make it entertaining to listen to. 6.5/10

Rhys is a performance I honestly feel people hate on way too much. Rhys delivery is good, and his performance as both Connors and the Lizard I feel was a very good adaptation from the comics. True I do think it was unessecary to alter his voice since I think he could probably do a deeper voice easy, but aside from that I think it is a good performance. 7.5/10

1. Baker
2. Campanella
3. Ifans
4. Carlson
5. Lowenthal
6. Jackson
7. Zombie
8. Blum
9. Fenwick
10. Burton

I have thought about it, and Rhys's voice for the Lizard would be perfect for Leatherhead, if he tones down the maliciousness and injects more kindness, and sympathy.

We already had one WTF casting choice for the Lizard that being James Arnold Taylor, and look how well that turned out,and now we have Yuri Lowenthal.

Admit ably we should be t critical of him since he is doing a cartoony, satire version of the character in a video game spin off of a satire Marvel cartoon, but still he mostly sounds like a generic guy attempting to do a monster voice to entertain a bunch of of pre school children, this casting choice is also really confusing considering they had freaking Steven Blum and Charlie Adler in the game, both masters of the raspy voices.

Rhys Ifans sucks! Not much more to say,if they just artificially deepened his voice the actor like with the life action Abomination then it would have been just fine, but they didn't even tr to do that, this is easily the most unfitting voice for the Lizard on the entire compare.

@DVJ Let's look at Steve Blum's Darkseid for an example, when the trailer for Justice League: War first debuted online, people complained Steve sounds too much like himself (not to me, to me he sounded perfect) and not enough like Uxas, so DC added vocal effects to the performance, which muddied it, would you like to see that again?

Rhys was pretty good in the film. The only downside was that the Lizard was underdeveloped.

1-: Dee Bradley Baker: Mainly for his later performances, but he sounds the most animalistic and intimidating out of everyone here.
2-: Rob Zombie: He doesn't sound monstrous enough and is a bit too subdued, but it's a threatening performance that's still entertaining to hear.
3-: Joseph C: He sounds really hammy and isn't monstrous at all, but I like his voice for the character and how confidently evil he sounds.
4-: Nathan Carlson: Not bad, it's more reptillain sounding than a lot of the other VA's.
5-: Steve Blum: A bit of a disappointment, he should have just taken his Killer Croc voice and made it sound a bit less brutish.
6-: James Arnold Taylor: Admittedly a bit of a guilty pleasure, I like the snake-ish slither he uses, although it obviously doesn't fit Lizard very well.
7-: Roger Jackson: Only fits Curt Connors, it doesn't sound like Lizard at all.
8-: Corey Burton: Completely generic.
9-: Gillie Fenwick: He hammed it up way too much here, the slurs are over done.

1.Dee Bradley Baker-he sounds perfectly reptilian and monstrous, and also does great as dr.connors, and does the role 4 time!

2.Steven Blum-hes tape sound rather crapy, but we all know that with better material and better voice directing he would pull of this role with no effort. However he has to stay away from voicing dr.connors.

As for the others

Nathan Carlson-rather forced monster voice
Joseph Campanella-greatb as dr.connors, but unbelivebly forced as the lizard
Rob Zombie-doesnt sound monstrous in the slightest
Roger Jakcson-same as with Zombie
James Arnold Taylor-COMLETE MISCAST!

Honestly most these guys sound unimpressive.

The only good one is Dee Bradley Baker.Between his high-pithced,hissy 2000 lizard and his low pitched 2012 lizard,he sounds very suting for the role, bonus point for doing a great performence as bos dr.conors and his reptilian alter ego and for doing the role not one,but trice.

Rob Zombia sounds to normal,he doesnt have and monstrous feal to his voice.Same case with Roger Jackson.

Nathan Carlson is okay, but kinda forced.Joseph Campanella is completly forced.

James Arnold Taylor was straight out miscasted. His a great VA but there are limits to his voice and giant, humanoid reptiles a far out of his vocal range.

Steven Blums tape is just to distorded to make out his voice but knowing SB his no stranger to doing monstrous voice,so i guess he makes a kickass lizard?

So overall the only stand out performences are Dee Bradlez Baker and ?Steven Blum, the others tried but stil failed flat.

Do any of you guys think that Dee Bradley Baker's USM performance sounds a bit like Scott McNeil? Anyway, his voice is perfect. Intelligent, monstrous, creepy, just all around great.

Nathan Carlson is second best at making Lizard sound monstrous, but it just isn't quite as scary or natural, and it sounds a little too stereotypical. Joseph Campanella gives a good performance, but his voice doesn't sound monstrous or distinct enough. Steve Blum's take is okay. Roger Jackson doesn't sound very monstrous, but he does sound very creepy and intelligent, I like it.

Rob Zombie, Gillie Fenwick, Corey Burton, and James Arnold Taylor are pretty boring to me.

That being said if Peter Lurie can't play Leatherhead in an episode of current version of TMNT Dee should take over as it reminded me of some of the voices for him.

I'm going with Nathan Carlson. Joseph Campanella and Dee Bradley Baker were alright too.

1. Joseph Campanella. Now This is exactly how Lizard needs to sound: Intelligent, unpredictable and terrifying! He even gets the balance right between Connors his human side and his reptilian side, he gets my vote.

2. Nathan Carlson. He makes a great monstrous and reptilian Lizard, it certainly fits.

3. Rob Zombie. Personally his take on Lizard was very good, it felt sinister and resentful. He even sounds a little like Steve Blum.

4. Dee Baker/James Arnold Taylor. Both too high pitch for Lizard, you'd expect one of the most prominent villains of Spider man to be a little more threatening IMO. Their acting is not bad though.

The rest are pretty much on the same boat as each other.

Does Rob Zombie look a little bit like Billy Connolly, or is it just me?

Fenwick is...alright. I don't have a real opinion on it.

I'm disapointed wit Burton's, it's a little generic and the hissing doesn't fit with the voice

I like Campanella, he gives the animal/reptile side of The Lizard but still keeps Connor's intellgence to him. He was also good for when Connor was in control of the Lizard.

Bradley does the cliche hiss with a reptile character, it's alright but not very rememberable.

Zombie is also good I guess but there's something that doesn't feel right for the voice to me. Dunno why.

The samething with Taylor as with Bradely, cliche hiss but not very rememberable.

Carlson is good if you want The Lizard to be a monster, a good deep and tough voice that still has a reptile feel to it.

Jackson does have a disadvantage from the others, he doesn't do a reptile feel to the character. His version is Connor in control of The Lizard. It's not bad, he has a very intellgent and well spoken feel to his. However I think the voice would fit better for Connor and I wish he did a more reptile or monster approach to the character (I know he could do pretty well considering his other roles).

Gotta hand it to Nathan Carlson on this one. I felt he did a good job as thr Lizard, though Joseph Campanella is good, too. Roger Jackson did a good job as how Spider-Man: Friend or Foe choswe to do the Lizard--which is pretty much Cr. Connors in control of the Lizard's body. Rob Zombie's too for the more sinister and vengeful take on the character the MTV show opted to use.

Dee Bradley Baker was good as the Lizard on Spectacular, but that was mostly growls and roars. As the Lizard in the 2000 games? Well, my problem with Baker and Daran Norris as the vilalins is a lot of them tended to sound more like typical 80s cartoon villains and while the 2000 games were lgihter than the games since, I don't quite the sound of a lot of the villain voices in those games.

Sticking with Carlson, but I gotta admit Steven Blum was good, too.

Joseph Campanella is clearly the vest Nathan Carlson is second for me and Baker at third and Zombie at 4th. The only reason Baker is winning is because he reprised the role in Spectacular but didn't speak.

@pete I didn't vote for Baker because he's in Spectacular. I only voted for him because of his performance in Ultimate Spider-man.

@pete That was the only new episode on demand. I was only looking because sometimes they put episodes there have yet to air.

@coolgeek176 Oh well. It's worth the wait because Season 2 looks and sounds promising. A lot of Spidey's rogues will appear.

At the time he originally posted it, likely because his theory that anyone who votes for Spectacular's VAs are biased.
