Kraven the Hunter

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Kraven the Hunter with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Spider-Man

Kraven the Hunter (real name Sergei Kravenhoff) is a big game hunter who seeks to capture Spider-Man and prove that he is the greatest hunter in the world. He is an expert hand-to-hand combatant and so often rejects the use of firearms in favor of his own natural abilities. He sometimes uses a mystical serum that grants him superhuman senses, strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, reflexes, and longevity.

Note: Dwight Schultz's rendition of the character is unavailable for the time being.

1. Jim Cummings was great in Shattered Dimensions he brought a real menacing performance which sounds awesome

2. Diedrich bader was really good as Kraven did a nice job with the accent and the gruff Ness to his voice

Eric Vesbit was pretty good in Spectacular Spider-Man comes off more pompous then threatening but he was good

Side Note : Chris Ryan, Scott McNeil, and David lodge would make good choices for the character

Jim Cummings is pretty good, and even though it's instantly recognizable, Steve Blum is great too. I just started reading Kraven's Last Hunt, and when I read comics I try to imagine my preferred voices for the characters in my head. And since I'm not particularly familiar with Kraven in general, Russian Steve Blum is what instantly sprang to mind.

I also like Eric Vesbit here, but I dunno. While Vesbit is good, he sounds more pompous than threatening, at least when compared to Bader and Blum.

Overall, for being not instantly recognizable (still love you Steve, you too Jim), and yet being convincingly Russian AND really threatening-sounding (at least from these clips), I'd give this one to Diedrich Bader.

I definitely love Jim Cumming's performance as Kraven the Hunter, this is the voice more or less I always thought he should have sounded like from the start, one that can sound menacing but can also be campy and even humorous, it's recognizably Jim but at the same time it's what gives him so much charm.

Diedrich Bader is a really close second, I never thought Hoss Delgado can do a deep and gruff Russian accent. Wow he is really impressive in the role. Definitely a major standout from Ultimate Spider-Man.

Steve Blum is really good too, sure it's Steve Blum with a Russian accent but his performance really sold me on him.

Peter Lurie sounds great though his delivery is a little off sounding still he sounds like he's having fun in the role.

Neil Kaplan sounds a bit too calm for my liking.

Eric Vesbit I really don't like, there's something that just sounds off to me about his voice. I would have preferred Jim Cummings to voice him here.

Nolan North sounds way too light for Kraven, though it's the closest we may get to Gerard Butler in the role.

I'm not feeling Gregg Berger in the role either even though he should be a natural fit for a role like this.

Paul Dobson and Michael Dorn have awesome voices but the lack of an accent really kills their performances I'm afraid.

Chris Wiggins sounds way too grating and lacks the accent.

George DiCenzo or Robert Ridgely doesn't sound like a real hunter IMO. Everyone else at least makes me think so.

Overall my vote goes to Jim Cummings.

BONUS: Scott McNeil's Mercenary Tao would make for an excellent Kraven The Hunter. I could also see Clancy Brown, John DiMaggio, JB Blanc, David Lodge, Crispin Freeman or Christopher Sabat being great as Kraven too. In live-action I've always wanted to see Gerard Butler play Kraven, just imagine a Russian Leonidas. That'd be awesome right? Make it happen Marvel and/or Sony!

I think if Nolan went with a gruff voice similar to Penguin as well as lay on a Russian accent like Blum did I'd probably rate him higher. This is definitely a role I could see him improve on, given he gets the chance to voice him again.

1) George DiCenzo*
2) Jim Cummings
3) Diedrich Bader
4) Jack DeLeon (1981 Spidey solo cartoon)
5) Gregg Berger
6) Chris Wiggins
7) Paul Dobson
8) Peter Lurie
9) Michael Dorn
10) Neil Kaplan
11) Steve Blum
12) Nolan North
13) Eric Vesbit

NOTE: As I said in the Osborn compare, all the actors that participated in episodes 1 to 7 of the first season were credited (along with some actors from later episodes which had already been cast). Because of this, the possibility of Ridgely being Kraven in a very early episode is remote. My best guess is George DiCenzo

I've been waiting to comment on this VC forever! This is such a great VC because there's so many good performances.

This is really tough. I want to vote for Vesbit, Cummings, Bader *and* Blum. They're all fantastic. The problem with the latter three, however, is that although they give great performances, I don't hear "Kraven", I hear "Jim Cummings as Kraven" or "Steve Blum as Kraven". Vesbit, given that he's such an unknown actor, I don't get lost in the "Oh, I recognize that voice" of his performance. I just hear Kraven.

Honourable mentions to Berger and Kaplan. I'm not distracted by their voices, but they're still not *quite* up to snuff with the others.

I probably would've included Dobson in my honourable mentions if he had put on a Russian accent. I understand that he's "The Hunter", and sort of a future/alternate take on Kraven (like many of the other villains in SM:U), but without the accent, it's just a typical deep Paul Dobson villain voice.

In the end, Vesbit gets me vote. :D

1. Jim Cummings - He actually makes Kraven sound COOL!
2. Peter Lurie - A perfect fit: much how I'd imagine him sounding.
3. Diedrich Bader - Another great, intimidating and natural sounding take.
4. Eric Vesbit - I love the deep voice he has: it really gives him presence.
5. Michael Dorn - A similarly deep voice, minus the accent.
6. Neil Kaplan - He's...okay, but generic just like the character.
7. Gregg Berger - Was never sold on this one. He sounds very forced.
8. Paul Dobson - The voice is nice but lord, is that accent bad!
9. Robert Ridgley - Sounds like a crazy con man with absolutely no accent.
10. Christ Wiggins - A totally unfitting voice and performance.

I was honestly surprised when I heard Diedrich's Kraven voice. He really nailed it.

Though I think Jim's performance is a tad better so I go for him
said at 3:13 PM on Mon Jul 15 2013
Diedrich & Jim are both brilliant as is Eric.

Gregg did his part as good guy Kraven and it was awesome.

Chris is not Kraven at all but he should have some respect for being the 1st voice.

Robert is ok really as is Peter.

Neil did a really good job I thought it would be good if he came back some day.

Michael is something else really i'm guessing a crime boss maybe.

Paul doesn't fit the character but it least he's better than chris.

but overall it goes 2 Diedrich for me despite being new 2 the role but Jim was a close 2nd.

Eric Vesbit. I like Peter Lurie as an actor, but his voice isn't deep enough and his accent sounds a bit too unnatural. Jim Cummings is good and was a decent choice, but he's not the greatest choice for Craven and he has that twinge of goofiness I associate with him in his voice and doesn't quite sound dark and serious enough.

1. Jim Cummings- Jim proofs why he's myfavorite VA. Menacing, strong, savage and the darkness all while doing the accent very well.

2. Peter Lurie- Good accent while still sounding menacing and savage.

3. Gregg Berger- I like he can go menacing yet can fit for the sympathetic moments of the character. Accent is alright.

4. Eric Vesbit- Menacing and savage but a bit wooden at times.

5. Micheal Dorm/Paul Dobson- Neither have the accent but their strong voices make up for it. Dorm's is a bit calmer but not too much to be wooden while still having that savage feel while Dobson has the more menacing side. Both are good but could be better.

6. Neil Kaplan- Accent is alright but kinda generic.

7. Robert Ridgly- Also generic but since he has no accent he is below Neil.

8. Chris Wiggins- Too forced and too high plus without the accent it just doesn't fit the character at all.
