Today on the Spider Man VC section we have Venom's original alter-ego known as... EDDIE BROCK! While not as big as the Symbiote Venom, Eddie does have a fairly large VC so I will keep in this short in which I must admit that this is a tough one. All of these guys here have played Eddie Brock pretty well in their own way. (Whether its the more arrogant angry jerk or a nicer more sympathetic victim or a bit of both when it comes to Eddie's characterization.) Oh yes and I also admit that I kind of like Topher and Ben's respective Eddie Brock performances more than their Venom ones (not that I dislike their work as Venom per say but still.) Anyways I am not sure who to go with here as all of these guys did well for Eddie Brock.

1. Benjamin Diskin
De-aging adults characters into teenagers is usually a huge pet peeve of mine, because 99% of time it feels more like some weird marketing strategy than actual artistic choice (I'm looking at you, Iron Man: Armored Adventures), but SSM's take on Eddie Brock works brilliantly. Since the show wanted to start out with High School aged Spider-Man, it makes perfect sense to make Brock closer to Peter's age, so he feels more believable as an "evil reflection" of him and makes it easier to justify making him part of Peter's everyday life. But I'm here to judge the voice acting, not the writing of the show, which is also superb. Benjamin gives the role tons of layers, starting out as Peter's big brother - figure, slowly transforms into his worst nightmare and makes the whole progress feel organic. And most importantly, Eddie never feels too unlikeable, since both the show and Benjamin make you see where he is coming from and why he would start to hate is "bro" so much.

2. Hank Azaria
For the more classic Eddie Brock, Hank is easily the best of the bunch. He makes Brock sound full of himself and appropriately pathetic, but also pulls his weight when he is tasked with more serious moments.

3. Brian Drummond
Brian did really good job of portraying someone who has been stuck as a monster too long and is rediscovering his humanity at his deathbed. The voice fits the character and the emotions feel genuine. Brian's Eddie was probably the best voice acting of the whole show, which isn't the highest possible compliment, but credit where credit is due.

4. Topher Grace
In my opinion, some of the critics of Topher Grace get too hang up on him being a lot scrawnier than Eddie Brock usually is depicted and don't seem to pay any attention to his actual performance. The real problem of Eddie Brock/Venom in Spider-Man 3 wasn't Topher Grace's casting, but Sam Raimi having zero interest in the character and making him as one-note as possible probably out of spite. However, considering what he had to work with, Topher does good job as sleazier and more pitiful version of the character, and clearly is having the time of his life. He isn't amazing or anything, but I don't think anyone could have done better with the script and direction he got. The game doesn't fix any of the fundamental problems of the movie's take on Eddie Brock and Topher is slighly more monotone tha he was in the movie, but he does have little bit more screen time to be sleazy, so I would say that he makes below average Eddie Brock/Venom, but fun enough villain on his own right.

5. Daniel Capellaro
Does fine as the Ultimate version of the character and gets the job done, but doesn't stand out one way or another.

6. Daran Norris
I'm sorry, I know that people really love Norris' Eddie in the game, but I find his performance little clunky. The moment in the clip is supposed to be his big breaking point, but he only sounds moderately peeved and it doesn't sound like he is even trying when the symbiote takes him over. However, I wouldn't call him awful (I have heard much worse) and he does MUCH better as Venom later in the game.

@The Doctor The Ultimate Marvel Incarnation of Eddie Brock is roughly the same Age as A Teenage Peter, so that is the Version the show is inspired by.

Ben Diskin also voiced a More Traditional Journalist version in The Amazing Spider-Man 2' IOS Game.

@EPA Deane I certainly can see the Ultimate influences, but they kinda stop with de-aging and "childhood friends" - angle. In terms of personality and story-arc, SSM's Eddie is very different from Ultimate Eddie.

I think that Daran's Eddie Brock is quite underrated.

Anyway, it's a tie between Daran and Hank.

What REALLY Impresses me about Ben Diskin so much (and is the reason he earns my vote) is the fact that he is able nail both the Spiteful University Student version of Eddie Brock from the Ultimate Spider-Man Comics in 'The Spectacular Spider-Man' and the Slimey, Oppertunistic Reporter version form the Regular Comics in 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' IOS Game....

That's a solid show of Acting Range IMO....

@EPA Deane I think the AS2 iOS game is one of the best takes. I like it so much better than the Spectacular SpiderMan take tbh.

Hank Azaria nailed both the arrogant jerk and sympathetic villain parts of Eddie Brock's character, so I'm voting for him.

While Brian Drummond is the most likable Eddie Brock and nails the sympathetic villain part of the character, he's also not really fitting for the completely arrogant jerk part of the character.

Ben Diskin is pretty good, though, if a bit dull at times.

Daran Norris is pretty generic at best, and average fare.

Topher Grace is incredibly bland and dull.

Daniel Capellaro would've fit Peter of all people better than Eddie with his portrayal: he sounds way too nerdy and wimpy for a character like Eddie Brock.

Daran Norris perfect for the traditional comic book version of Eddie Brock who had a much bigger, tougher and burlier looking design.

Ben Diskin is a close second since I really liked his portrayal and performance, one that could look like a nice bro-like guy despite harbouring a little of bitterness and resentment. He's perfect for the Ultimate version of the character

Hank Azaria was pretty good in the 90's cartoon, not much else to say other than I liked him.

Brian Drummond sounds too heroic as Eddie, then again I think most of that was due to the writing. I'm sure he could pull off a more traditional Eddie if given the chance.

Daniel Capellaro sounds too whiny and weak for the Ultimate version.

Topher Grace......>Eric Foreman as Eddie Brock......why? Who thought he was a good idea for the role?

Daran Norris has my vote.

BONUS: I could totally see Patrick Seitz being perfect as Eddie Brock, just imagine him playing him similar to his Laxus Dreyar from Fairy Tail.

1. Daran Norris: I never quite got the hate for his Eddie. Eddie Brock is an angry heavyset guy, and I feel that Daran's voice sounded suitably gruff and pissed off. I personally would love for him to reprise Eddie/Venom some day.

2. Ben Diskin: I really loved his Eddie all around, it's a great combination of the younger Ultimate Brock along with the bitter, antagonistic Eddie from the mainstream comics. He's great at sounding nice and big-brotherly, yet also incredibly convincing when he's passive aggressive and bitter towards Peter.

3. Hank Azaria: Not my personal favorite since I didn't quite grow up on the nineties Spider-Man, but I still dig his slimy and sleazy voice, quite fitting for a shady journalist who goes rogue.

4. Daniel Capellaro: While Ultimate Eddie is supposed to sound younger than his mainstream counterpart and Daniel's performance is good on its own, I just don't get Eddie Brock vibes from it.

5. Brian Drummond: His voice is too whispery and quiet, and I can't help but feel that his delivery is a bit stilted at times. Not really a favorite of mine.

6. Topher Grace: Just all around lifeless and dull. He's a bit better in the movie, but I'd still say even there he was the weakest out of all the villains performance-wise.

I'd say for future casting, either Fred Tatasciore or even Henry Rollins would make a great Eddie Brock, as well as Venom. In fact, Rollins is who I'd picture for a proper live-action Eddie/Venom.

Hank Azaria in my opinion is the definitive Eddie Brock! So he gets my vote.

I disliked Ben Diskin's take on Venom, but I'll cut him some slack and give him second place for Eddie O:

I'm changing my vote to Daran Norris. From the images I've seen of Eddie from the comics, I think his angrier, gravelly voice fits him much better than any of these.

1. Hank Azaria. Brock here sounds very fitting, he sounds like a sleazy scum-bag who's willing to "Get the best story, and the facts don't matter." The accent he gave him only enhanced the authenticity of him, and it works.
2.Ben Diskin. I was never a big fan of this interpretation of Brock, and it's only getting this high because of the delivery alone.
3.Topher Grace. I think Topher might've been 2 if his performance was just a tad bit better, he sounds like he's bored out of his mind in the recording booth. He did a decent job a Borck in the movies though.
4.Daran Norris. He was kind of weak as Brock, but it worked fine enough.

1. Brian Drummond - A perfect fit in every way.
2. Hank Azaria - Same as the above.
3. Ben Diskin - Very well performed and with a cool. charismatic sounding voice.
4. Topher Grace - Love him as the sleazy young Brock, but he's better when he's actually acting the part.
5. Daran Norris - Weak when compared to his Venom.
6. Daniel Capellaro - Whiny, generic, and not very fitting.

Brian is Number 1 for me with Hank 2nd & Benjamin 3rd.

Topher came back from the film and I like that.

Daran was good as Venom but not his alter ego so this time he wasn't so good.

Daniel on the other hand never even voiced Venom.

D.A.V.E. said exactly what was great about Ben Diskin. His performance was good and it was interesting how he could sound bitter/rude but just convincingly nice enough that you wouldn't call him on it. His passive aggressiveness was done very nicely and I think he deserves the vote.

When it comes to an angrier Brock, I have to go with Daran Norris. He sounds convincingly bitter, angry, and violent to great effect even in the little screen-time he has outside of being Venom in the game's opening.

Hank Azaria sounds like he was probably decent too, but I don't know enough about his performance and his New York accent gets on my nerves a little.

I suppose the clip for Hank Azaria is more suitable for comparison purposes but when I think of Eddie Brock in the 90s Spider-Man show I always chuckle at this line.

(may not be exact words)

"Spider-Man ruined everything! He got me fired and took away my health!"

The health part is so random lol

Going with Ben Diskin. Loved how his performance has him pretending very hard to be a nice guy, while he's actually just a creep jealous of Peter. More subtle than the other ones, who just make him out to be a jerk from the get-go.
said at 10:49 PM on Tue Dec 11 2012
@D.A.V.E. Hank and Daran are the only ones that give him the anti-hero feel which Classic Eddie is while Ben is Ultimate Eddie who's supposedly a nice friendly guy.
said at 12:58 AM on Sun Apr 20 2014

Ultimate Eddie revealed himself to be a creep, too, before he became Venom.
