Voice Compare » Spider-Man » Doctor Octopus

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Doctor Octopus with sound clips and images.
Doctor Octopus is one of Spider-Man's greatest enemies he is also known as Doc Ock. Before the accident that merged him with the robotic tentacles, he was a respected scientist known as Otto Octavius. Doctor Octopus is a brilliant scientist, engineer and inventor. His genius intellect makes him an excellent strategist and leader. From his accident he has the mental ability to control his four tentacles which can multitask and are also very powerful weapons.

For the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon Doc Ock was first voiced by Vernon Chapman for the episode "The Power of Dr. Octopus" and for the episode "The Terrible Triumph of Dr. Octopus" he was voiced by Tom Harvey.

Alfred Molina is my favorite of the bunch, he was great in the movie as a crazed, tragic villain and carried out the same performance in the game and won me over.

Tom Kenny also deserves a mention, I thought he sounded pretty chilling and creepy and is a perfect fit for the Ultimate version of Doc Ock.

Efrem Zimbalist and Peter MacNicol are my favorites, but Tom Kenny was good too. Efrem was better as the classic Doc Ock, and Peter fits better for the newer comics. Alfred Molina wasn't bad, but he sounds a bit bland here; but I definitely think he was great as the live-action version. Does anyone else think that Mark Hamill would be a good pick to voice Doctor Octopus?

Alfred Molina- My favourite Doc Ock. Practically how I imagined him to sound.

Efrem Zimbalist Jr.- Without the accent, Efrem could really work the role.

Dave B Mitchell- With the very little he had, he did quite well.

Peter MacNicol- Don't really see the approval of his version. He sounds too high-pitched and whiny. This has miscast written all over it.

Tom Kenny and DBB- Both were bait too high, but not nearly to the same extent as MacNicol's version. So they are fine.

Micahel Bell-completly miscast

Efrem Zimbalist Jr-one of the stronger performences in that show, even with the accent his voice is very close to how i imagined the classic comic book dock ock to sound like,an dhe does a good performence at playing him as a arrogant and egotisticall mad scientist

Joe Alaskey-knowing his vocal range he ahs potencial for the role, but hes not given a lot of material to work with and theres something inheritably campy about his performence

Peter Mac Nicol-i`ll say it dr.octopus was not one of the strongest elements in SS.Peters voice while to high and nassally, still i guess it fits this short, chubby version of dock ock,and admitebly his delivery of the lines is pretty creepy

Cam Clark-miscast,to flamboyant and why the hell does he laugh like a gigly school girl.

Dave B Michael-hes not given much to work with,so i will just say hes unimpressive

Tom Kenny-while the voice work in USM is mediocer in general and full of miscasts,Tom casting as dock ock suprisingly worked,at least as this unique version.Tom does a good job at playing him as a insane, broken scientist depraved of emocions and talkig in a monotone.

Roger Bumpass-anybody see the irony in this casting.Hes okay a ll say that, but not very memorable

Charlei Adler/Dee Bradley Baker-generic Charile Adler and Dee Bradley Baker vocies, those two seriously have more range than that.

I could list a number of voice actors that i at least think would be fitting fore the role; Maurice LaMarche,Corey Burton,Fred Tatasciore,David Kaye,David Sobolov and so on....

said at 4:24 AM on Sun Oct 13 2013
Efrem Zimbalist.Jr-decent,but not that great,he kind of captures dock oks character as a egotistical mad scientist, but his accent is to think and kind of distracting
Alfred Molina-not a big fan of celebrity VA,but hes probably the closest to how I imagined dock ock to sound, but he still kid of sounds to calm for my taste
Joe Alaskey-to cranky,to hammy,just a weak okay performance
Peter McNicol-his delivery of the lines is very good, but the voice itself is just ****ing horrible,to high-pitched and to nasally. He gives me the same feeling as Kevin Michael Richardsons Joker good performance, but unfitting voice
Cam Clark-****ing horrible to high-pitched,to nasally,to young,to flamboyant, and his delivery of the lines just as bad.And what the hell is up with that girly laugh
Dave B Michell-completely laughable, his voice and performance Is ac complete joke
Tom Kenny-oh hell, who in the right mind thought spongebob would work as dr.octopus,oh yes that piece of **** show ultimate ****ing spiderman.Anyway his performance is better that I expected, has a creepy monotone and sounds drained of emocions, but still i just cant take anything that has tom kennys voice seriously,so overall I thick he was miscast.
Roger Bumpass-first spongebob, now squidward, what the hell¬?Anyway his tape is a little to distorted to make out,but from what I can gather he does a….okay dock ock,but still a little to snobby and flamboyant.
Outsided of this we have Charlie Adler who voiceas a cartoony SHSS version of dock ock, while I couldn’t possibly imagine him voicing the real deal,I thought he would do great as this particular version, but I was disappointed,to high-pitched and kind of a generic Charlie Adler voice,to sum it up just nothing worth while talking.
Overall non of this guys made say ‘’that’s Dr.Octopus,no doubts about it’’,like I did about Steven Blum`s Green goblin and Daran Norris`s Venom
Personally I think Corey Burton or Murice LaMarche would be a great Dr.Octopus

I voted for Alfred Molina, but if I had to say which one I imagined Ock sounding like in the comics, it'd actually be Joe Alaskey's take. It sounds just like Vernon Chapman and Efrem Zimbalist Jr, but with the accent heavily downplayed.

Maybe it's nostalgia talking, but I don't think any other voice worked better than Efrem's. The rest are good for what they were (except maybe Kenney's) but something about Efrem's voice seemed so fitting to Doc in my opinion
said at 10:03 PM on Tue Oct 1 2013
@HyperVoiceActing His voice is perfect, but the accent is all wrong. But that's the voice of the inept voice director rather than the actor.
said at 5:38 AM on Wed Oct 2 2013
@Galactic_Cyrus - I was never bothered by the accent personally.
said at 1:01 PM on Wed Oct 2 2013
@HyperVoiceActing I don't recall if the comics ever stated that he was of any nationality other than New York. If he was, I'd still expect him to have a slight accent rather than a thick one. Efrem was inconsistent in that regard.
said at 5:30 PM on Wed Oct 2 2013
@Galactic_Cyrus - That I can understand. It was a tinge inconsistent. I just mean the accent in general never bothered me.
said at 11:54 AM on Tue Oct 15 2013
@HyperVoiceActing I thought the accent was the best thing about Efrem's performance. It was original.
said at 3:03 PM on Wed Oct 23 2013
@Galactic_Cyrus I know the accent might not be consistent with the character, but Efrem's performance and the German accent both really gave me the "proud, crazy mad scientist" the best. I think he's the most memorable and his performance itself fits the character to a tee, IMO. I don't think it's flawless, but I still really enjoy it.
said at 11:21 AM on Thu Oct 24 2013
@PsychicVoiceSpy I agree there. With the accent toned down a bit, he'd sound pretty much exactly like Joe Alaskey's version, and still giving a strong performance because he's such a talented and experienced actor in general.
said at 1:10 PM on Thu Oct 24 2013
@Galactic_Cyrus The difference is that Efrem Zimbalist Jr's voice is noticeably deeper than Joe Alaskey's (another reason I prefer Efrem over the others, I feel the tone of his voice was pretty much spot on). If Joe Alaskey's voice was deeper and less nasally then he would be almost just right, IMO.
said at 9:16 PM on Thu Oct 24 2013
@PsychicVoiceSpy I guess it's just differences, but I never imagined Ock having too deep a voice. Not as high as Michael Bell or Charles Adler, but not as deep as Efrem or Stan Jones. Alaskey, Peter Macnicol (in the last part of his clip), and Tom Kenny get closest to that middle pitch I imagine him having.
said at 3:24 PM on Sat Sep 7 2013
Alright, I have a new ranking to put here. I already wrote my reasons for most of them down below.

1: Efrem Zimbalist Jr.

2: Alfred Molina

3: Tom Harvey (I think he's easily the best of the older voices.)

4: Roger Bumpass

5: Peter MacNicol

6: Joe Alaskey

7: Roger Bumpass

8: Tom Kenny

I don't care about the rest enough to rank them.
said at 2:51 PM on Wed Oct 2 2013
@PsychicVoiceSpy Disagree about Tom Harvey. I thought he was terribly dull and a step down from Vernon Chapman. Listen to the way he drones and then says " Doctor Octopus."
said at 5:24 PM on Thu Oct 3 2013
@Galactic_Cyrus Well... I actually did like his clip. And I pretty much judged the older actors by their clips, so I'm more judging them on their voices than their acting, and I thought Tom Harvey had the coolest "mad scientist" voice of the bunch.
said at 5:48 PM on Thu Oct 3 2013
@PsychicVoiceSpy I think Vernon Chapman and Tom Harvey both had great mad scientist voices, but yeah, the acting wasn't too special back then. They all sounded like "Super Friends."
said at 6:12 PM on Thu Oct 3 2013
@Galactic_Cyrus That's cool, I just like trying to find something that holds up in old performances, even if it's not much sometimes.
said at 7:21 PM on Sat Oct 5 2013
@PsychicVoiceSpy And the voices themselves do hold up, don't get me wrong. Those voices in better performances would be perfect Doc Ocks.
said at 9:00 AM on Thu Sep 5 2013
It pains me to say it,but admitebly Alfred Molina sounds the most decent as Dr.Octopus.I normally hate celebrity VAs,but he delivers hes lines belivebly and his voice is very maching.

Efrem Zimbalist Jr is also decent, but his thick german accent is very distracting

Peter McNicol is to whiny and nasally and one of the rare bad casting choices on the spectacular spiderman

Dave B Mithcell,Charlie Adler and Cam Clarke just sound silly, especially Clarke with his girly laugh. While Joe Alaskey just sounds generic. As for Roger Bumpass i can only hear Squidward on his tape.

Tom Kenny...i dont know what to say, while i like his creepy monotone,i just cant exept his in the role, tome kenny just cant be doctor octopus.

At the end none of this is quite what i would have liked, there are a lot of great voice actor that could be sutible for this role

Rodger was too deep.

Efrem, Peter, Tom K & Alfred are my favs though Tom H was pretty good too, he was a good replacement for Vernon.

Stan was better as the Kingpin really not too great as Doc Ock though.

Joe was fine as was Vernon but Dave's voice doesn't fit, just like Michael & Charlie.

Not much 2 say about Cam really.

#1. Efrem Zimbalist Jr. did it well and manages to fit the character of the comics, and now I have a hard time imagining him without it. He seemed to be like the comic character the most, but some may say the accent seems odd for a person in New York, but hey, maybe his parents or relatives who were around him were German.
#2. Alfred Molina not only did he do an expert performance as Doc Ock in the movie, he also gave on in the game and he comes so close to Efrem, but he ends up in second. He captures a more sympathetic side of Doc Ock, and Ock is a bit of tragic villain, so it works extremely well.
#3. Tom Kenny plays his Doc Ock with more coldness, like as if the experiment not only took away his average life, but as if it also took all emotions he felt as well. It has a very cold a calculating feel to it.
#4. Peter MacNicol did a great job, but seemed a bit too high pitched for me. In the comics to me Doc Ock has a rather deeper voice, which is why Molina and Zimbalist are the 2 best and why Macnicol and Kenny are 3rd and 4th. He still did a good job as Doc Ock, but like I said, a bit too high pitched for my tastes.

Tom Kenny and Peter MaCnicol are both stunning! It was a surprisingly tough decision, but I have to go with Peter MaCnicol. Tom Kenny is brilliant as well and menacing, but Peter is just about as creepy while having a tiny bit more personality.

said at 1:51 PM on Mon Aug 26 2013
@pete I'm thinking of changing my vote soon, but I'm not sure to who. Here's what I think of the other ones I've heard extensively. I'll be back with a much more extensive opinion later.

Efrem Zimbalist Jr. - I'm not sure what I think of the accent, but he certainly did a great job of making him sound like a smart, proud mad-scientist. I think he's very good and I personally think he has possibly the most personality of them all.

Rodger Bumpass - It's his Prof. Membrane voice from Invader Zim, and I think it works very well. It makes him sound nicely proud and maniacal, but I also think it sounds a little one-note and he's not showing enough of his acting range.

Alfred Molina - What I like about Alfred Molina is that he doesn't sound over-the-top. He sounds very cool and level-headed, it makes him sorta charismatic. However, at the same time he never really gets to truly sound like a maniacal, proud scientist like the others. Therefore, my opinion on him is similar to Rodger Bumpass in the way that he's not showing much acting range. Except this time it's that he doesn't sound as proud, maniacal, and as fun as the others. I wish he could voice the character again and play him as more of a true mad-scientist.

Joe Alaskey also sounds solid. Charlie Adler Cam Clarke, and Dave B Mitchell I'm not crazy about. The first four preceding Efrem I'm reserving judgement on, but I might actually end up picking one of them.
said at 5:27 PM on Thu Feb 28 2013
Efrem Zimberalist Jr., Alfred Monila, Tom Kenny, Vernon Champman, Tom Harvey, Stan Jones, Rodher Bumpass, Cam Clarke, and Dave B Mitchell are my favorites I enjoyed Peter Macniol's cry of ARACHNID and it's not a bad performance but isn't my favorite voice for Doc Ock.

said at 10:41 PM on Tue Jan 15 2013

Yeah, the voice was waaay too high pitched and very annoying. Tom Kenny's pretty good.

@pete ...
said at 3:54 AM on Wed Jan 16 2013
@pete Doc Ock is a scientist first, psychotic second. I don't see how sounding like a nerd doesn't fit.
said at 2:58 PM on Wed Jan 16 2013
@TheVengeanceKnight He doesn't like an adult sounds like he should be in high school getting wedgies. Unless he's younger than most incarnations I'll let that slide. To Kenny sounds like an older darker version of Macniol.
said at 5:44 PM on Wed Jan 16 2013
@pete He was Norman Osborn's bitch before becoming Doc Ock; does that count? :-P
said at 8:57 PM on Wed Jan 16 2013
@TheVengeanceKnight It does work for his depiction but hearing that voice come put the comics wouldn't work for the classsic comics (60's to 80) I usually picture Efrem for that period or one of the 60's shows VA's or his 80's show Va and for the 90's and early 2000's I picture Efrem as well but for a the modern Doc Ock I'd say Macniol or Kenny would fit perfectly.
said at 9:12 PM on Wed Jan 16 2013
@TheVengeanceKnight Oh and ASM 559 and 600 even took the hacking all the tech in the city story and made a comic version of it.
said at 4:24 PM on Thu Jan 17 2013

Actually, it could. Not to mention, Weisman did say that they looked a lot to the classic comics for Spectacular.
said at 1:10 AM on Fri Jan 18 2013
@pete What he said; I always hear MacNicol when I I read comics with Doc Ock.
said at 9:43 PM on Fri Jan 18 2013
@TheVengeanceKnight I enjoyed his cry of ARACHNID but like I said the voice depends on the era and current Doc Ock acts a lot like Macniol' or Kenny's. I do like him as Mad Hatter and hear him in the role whenever he's in a Batman comic.
said at 9:48 PM on Fri Jan 18 2013
@Anicomicgeek As I aid above the voice depends on the era for me and it'e easier to hear it in modern comics then it was in classic ones since Spectacular's had some classic stories bt he was more like Ultimate Ock overall. I did picture him in the 559-600 where Aunt May marries JJ's father since he acted a lot like that version. Afterwords as well like in "Thee Origin Of Species". I get the feeling they may be making him more like Macniol's version which I don't mind really I just find it weird compared to the others.
said at 7:34 AM on Tue Jan 22 2013

And clearly, Weisman--and from the results, most people--hear MacNicol for classic Ock.

I'm gonna restate my opinion. My favorite is Peter MacNicol. Tom Kenny, Rodger Bumpass, Joe Alaskay, and Alfred Molina were good too. I'm not really sure why Efrem Zimbalist Jr has a German accent. I like Cam Clarke but I hate his Doc Ock. Dave B. Mitchell sounds pretty generic. Out of the older voices I think Vernon Chapman is the best because he made him sound smarter than the others.
said at 11:21 PM on Sat Jan 5 2013
@coolgeek176 Either because of his German background, to make him sound more like a mad scientist, or both.
said at 12:33 PM on Mon Jan 7 2013

Expect Otto Octavius isn't from Germany, so he wouldn't have a German accent.
said at 2:49 PM on Mon Jan 7 2013
@Anicomicgeek I meant just that he's of German descent as a whole and either Efrem or the voice director wanted that voice, that or to make him sound like a mad scientist as most "mad scientist" villains would have some sort of accent usually German or Russian.
said at 3:27 PM on Mon Jan 7 2013

Except he was born in New York, so even if he is of German descent, he wouldn't have a German accent.
said at 10:05 PM on Mon Jan 7 2013

2: Stan Jones
3: Michael Bell

does anyone know who did the voice of Doc Octopus who appeared in the Incredible Hulk 1980's episode.

@Patrick It was Michael Bell there as well.

@Blazer5robot For his take yes. Tom Kenny is like a darker version of him. However Vernon Chapman, Tom Harvey, Stan Jones, and Efrem Zimberalist Jr. and Alfred Molina are my favs with Tom and Peter right behind since the first 5 are closer to the comics.

But while Peter MacNicol is still an awesome Doc Ock, Tom Kenny and EZB are still cool.

Both Alfred Molina and Peter MacNicol were good as Otto IMO, but personally, I prefer Molina as I think Ock sound sound a little deep vocally and MacNicol's a little high-pitched for my tastes.
said at 7:59 PM on Wed Jul 11 2012
@Anicomicgeek Sticking with Molina, but Tom Kenny was pretty good, too--and really creepy.

After rewatching the New Year's episode of Spectacular Spider-Man, I'm gonna change my vote to Peter MacNicol.

On second thought, I'm changing my vote back to Molina.
said at 9:04 AM on Sun Aug 14 2011
A lot of my favorite VAs (Cam Clarke, Michael Bell, Joe Alaskey) are on here, but MacNicol beats them all. He just IS Doc Ock, and he doesn't need a silly, inexplicable German accent (sorry, Efrem, I love you anyway) to prove it.
said at 1:11 AM on Wed Jul 6 2011
Zimbalist is how he should sound. Otto Octavius is Austrian/German so it's only fair to give him a German accent.
said at 2:53 AM on Wed Sep 7 2011

Ock was actually born in New York.
said at 12:17 AM on Thu Sep 8 2011
@D.A.V.E. Read that again dude. I didn't say he was born in Germany just that he is German.
said at 12:45 PM on Sat Sep 17 2011
@pete Except he's not. He may have German ancestry, but he's parents were American and he was born and raised in New York. So it makes no sense to give him an accent.
said at 7:34 PM on Wed Sep 21 2011
@D.A.V.E.We don't know if his parents were American their whole lives and all of his family's history so you just assumed they were. His father(or mother or both) might not have been born in America and born and raised in Germany and then immigrated to the states. His father could have had an accent and he inherited it from them. Efrem Zimbalist Jr. is the most realistic Doc Ock for me and is the only I can hear when I read the comics. The voices that played him in the 60's were good for their time though but no one on this VC can top Zimbalist.
said at 3:45 PM on Mon Sep 3 2012

In the comics, based on his background, I think it might be say to say his parents didn't hail from Germany. Realistically, yeah, Ock is an American, so he wouldn't have a German accent.
said at 12:10 PM on Thu Jun 16 2011
Peter MacNicol plays the Best Doctor Octopus Ever!!!
said at 9:38 PM on Sat May 21 2011
Since Doc Ock from the 2000 Activision Spider-Man video game wasn't on here I would have voted Alfred Monalia, but then I heard Efrem Zimbalist's performance and I really like the accent he has. He pulls it off without sounding silly, so my vote goes for him.

@pete Don't need to, just looked at Efrem's page on here, now I just feel silly for not noticing sooner.

It's kinda coincidental that even though I didn't know it was him in the game, I voted for him anyways. Funny how that works.

Definately Alfred Molina, though Efrem Zimbalist Jr. comes close. MacNicol is too high; but of course, it'll get the most votes just for being in "Spectacular Spider-Man" regardless of it's actual quality.

said at 8:31 PM on Fri Mar 2 2012
@OminousFlare MacNicol's Ock was the Master Planner. Zimbalist's was the Kingpin's flunky.
said at 3:52 PM on Mon Sep 3 2012

Despite going with Alfred Molina, I gotta side with GregXB on this one. In the comics, Doc Ock is on one's lackey and doesn't kowtow to anyone, whereas--outside of one or two cases--TAS Doc Ock was nothing BUT a lackey. If anything, Zimbalist's Ock in TAS was the Octowuss.
said at 3:54 PM on Mon Sep 3 2012
@Anicomicgeek "no one's lackey", I mean.
said at 6:07 AM on Wed Aug 21 2013
@OminousFlare This is one of the greatest comments I've ever read on here. And I'm pretty sure you were speaking of how MacNicol's performance sounds and not how the character was written, which to be fair, isn't the most butch and powerful sounding mad scientist around.
said at 3:14 PM on Tue Feb 22 2011
The whole MIchael Bell thing wasn't a good idea it's Doc Ock he was supposed to voice not Riddler aparently he didn't get the memo and that voice doesn't suit Doc Ock at all.
