Alright folks for this installment of the Soul Calibur VC category we have the infamous Azure Knight himself... NIGHTMARE! While Nightmare debuted earlier the first game that Nightmare had a English VA with is Soul Calibur II in which he was voiced by Ted D'Agostino. I will say this much on how Ted's work for the role is pretty good as he does try to have a fairly low monstrously menacing voice. Its not perfect when it comes to voices of that type but to be fair it still does work especially considering on how Nightmare was controlling Siegfried's body in SC 2. Long story short its nothing special but it does work for the role well enough and it gets the job done.

In Soul Calibur 3 (and 4) Patrick Ryan took over the role and while his work is not really bad by its own merits but wasn't exactly the best alternative Namco could have done. Basically my biggest problem is that Patrick's voice for the role is a little too high, oh sure its not a really high voice in general still. To be fair Patrick does do a decent job trying to sound monstrously menacing but the tone does kind of mess it up considering how big Nightmare is (and as strange as it may sound but it probably would've have worked better if Namco did some "Voice Modification" effects for this role.) To make a long story short its not the worst performance I have heard from a SC game but its far from the best.

And last but not least is Michael McConnohie in Soul Calibur Legends which while not perfect is definitely a good step in the right direction. Oh sure Michael's Nightmare voice is a bit more of a refined version of his Astaroth voice but to be fair all things considered that does make sense. But still Michael does do a pretty good attempt at trying to sound monstrously menacing and his performance does have a pretty good sense of rage in his performance. Overall I don't think any of them are perfect for the role but I do feel that Michael McConnohie is the closest to that with Ted D'Agostino at a close second and Patrick Ryan at a somewhat distant third.

(Update: Charles Klausmeyer gets to take over the role in SC 5 and his voice work on the role is pretty good. The vocal effects in Charles' voice for the role is not bad but it doesn't sound quite demonic enough. As for Charles' performance its servicable enough as it does have a good sense of energy and it does suit on how Nighmare is normally eager for carnage. So in other words Charles' work on the role is pretty good but I am still going with Michael a bit more.)

They all work in various ways but Ted's is my favorite. His take on the character from a delivery standpoint is chilling. McConnohie and Ryan are fairly close for second place but I'd have to give the nod to Ryan. Klausmeyer is in fourth for reasons described below.

As an aside, I really dislike the echo and flange effects they've gradually added to the character's voice over the years. I can't even give Klausmeyer a fair evaluation because of how distorted everything is. I can understand the creative reasons behind it, though.

 1 Shout Out!
I'll give Ryan this: he says "I'll burn you alive!" with the best of them.

D'Agostino, though, is Nightmare, and he can be Mordred too if he really wanted to.

To clarify some older comments:

- Patrick Ryan only confirmed that he voiced Nightmare in SCIII.

- Checking out Nightmare's clips for SCIV, you can hear Michael McConnohie's trademark boom--clearly he carried over from Legends in the same way that RCS carried over as Siegfried (which works because, you know...)

They all sound good to me, but I think I'll go with Michael here.
It was a tough call though.

Charles Klausmeyer was MUCH better as Raphael. He's not horrible here by any means, but he's too forced and generic for my liking. Doesn't really stand out amongst all of Nightmare's other voices.

Still sticking with Patrick Ryan, again, more for his work in IV than in III.

@Metabad Also, something about how gruff Charles' voice is here just comes across as more silly and cartoony than anything.

I know there's probably no chance in hell of this happening, but someday, maybe Brian Drummond should voice Nightmare.

@LordofEvil96 OH DEAR GOD YES!

@Metabad Awesome! Someone who agrees with me! Interestingly enough when I first heard Nightmare's voice in Soul Calibur 2 I actually thought it was Brian.

@LordofEvil96 Yeah, now that I think about it I could totally see why! What's great about it is that I could see him easily fitting both the SC2 Nightmare (maybe using something similar to his Vegeta voice) and SC4 Nightmare (using something similar to his Ryuk voice), who happen to be my favourite incarnations of the character...heck, he could probably make me actually like the SC3 incarnation of Nightmare as well!

Holy cow, if a Soul Calibur anime series ever comes out, Ocean NEEDS to dub it now. The idea of Brian Drummond as Nightmare is just too perfect!

Sadly it might never happen, but a guy can dream...

I liked Agostino the most because he provided the most identifiable voice. Ryan's just seemed a little generic to stand out to me. I don't know anybody who actually played SC Legends so I guess I can't judge McConnohie, especially with a 3 second clip!

To tell you the truth, I've heard quite a bit of Nightmare's voice in Soul Calibur V. I'm not too sure whether or not it's Patrick Seitz (in fact, it kinda sounds like him during gameplay), but regardless, you can find the VA's name in the credits. I actually like it more than his previous voice actor (Patrick Ryan) IMO.

But overall, here's how I rank this compare from best to worst:

1. Patrick Seitz (?)
2. Michael McConnohie
3. Ted D'Agostino
4. Patrick Ryan (SCIV)
5. Patrick Ryan (SCIII)

I'll withhold my vote until I hear more of Nightmare's new voice in V.
Ted Agostino- Pretty good, cheesy yes, but still intimidating.
Michael McConnohie- My favorite so far, his voice is very menacing.
Patrick Ryan- Ugh, in III he sounded like a much more forced version of Ted and in IV I couldn't understand a single word he said thanks to that garbled processor.

Patrick Ryan is my personal favourite of the bunch, not for his work in Soul Calibur 3 but for his chilling demonic Nightmare voice in Soul Calibur 4 which was nothing short of amazing. Ted is a very close second for me and I actually do like his performance more than Ryan's performance in 3, but not as much as his performance in 4. While I like Michael McConnohie, he's just not really my ideal Nightmare voice sounding a bit too much like the Lich King. Sorry Michael, you're awesome and all but I got to give this one to Patrick with Ted as a very close second.

@Nightmare Crusher You bet I do.

I saw rosebr's post about Michael McConnohie being Nightmare in SC4, and after listening to it again...yeah, definitely heard his voice there. I would say I dunno how I didn't catch that earlier, but I don't think SC4 even had English voice acting credits outside of the Star Wars characters.

Still, it's a bit disheartening to know that Patrick Ryan never really came back and improved, I was really rooting for him. I'll come back to post a new write-up a little bit later, this was pretty much my first post ever on this site so odds are I can go into much more detail now than I did before.

@Metabad Yeah, SC3, 4, Legends, and Broken Destiny didn't credit the voice actors beyond the Star Wars guests in 4, and that's why there's been so much confusion regarding these games.

I think a lot of the information that was floating around for 4 was because of people simply assuming that many of the old voice actors from 3 and even 2 came back in the absence of any contradictory information. In everyone's defence, Nightmare is one of the easier ones to miss due to the extensive effects they put on his voice.

I will say that if there's anything that can be taken away from going through all the English voice credits for this franchise, it's that to be blunt, the Soulcalibur fanbase is extraordinarily bad with voice actors (not pointing any fingers). I've never seen another franchise with so much inaccurate information. On the bright side, V crediting its English cast was a step in the right direction and now everything's been gradually getting sorted out.
