Cervantes de Leon

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Cervantes de Leon with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Soul Calibur

Cervantes is one of the main antagonists of the Soul Calibur series whom has been around since the first game of the series Soul Edge. Cervantes was an infamous bloodthirsty pirate whom would gladly pillage any ship he can find and kill anyone in his way, before the series began he was trying to find the weapon Soul Edge and managed to succeed. However when Cervantes found Soul Edge he was possessed by its power and became an undead-like pirate whom serves Soul Edge and has had his fair share of foes (mainly women such as Sophitia, Taki and especially Ivy whom is his daughter and they both normally try to kill each other.) While Cervantes became an undead middle aged pirate for most of the series in Soul Calibur V he seems to have regained his humanity but is still very much an evil pirate.

Today on the Soul Calibur VC section we take a look at the Dread Pirate Captain... CERVANTES DE LEON1 Lets begin...

Barry Gjerde- Barry's voice and performance for the role was pretty good as it does fit the role fairly well. (Granted one of Cervantes' endings in that game would lets just say seem a little strange to put it mildly but still.) Granted it might seem a little strange that for a Spanish Pirate he does sound occasionally Scottish but I suppose its not that big a deal. Basically its a pretty good example of Barry's work and a fairly good performance in general.

Warren Rodgerson- A slight mixed bag as there were some lines where Warren's voice for the role got a bit lower and his performance was really good as it sounded really sinister. However Warren's voice for the role did sound a bit forced when Cervantes is shouting though, its not really bad but still. Anyways while Warren's work on the role is not perfect but it is one of the better performances in that game.

Wally Wingert- Wally's voice for the role is not bad at all but it is a little bit too high but it still does work for the role pretty well. As for Wally's performance it was pretty good as a gruff mannered sinister pirate and the quality of his performance was a little bit more consistent as well. So basically its not one of Wally's better performances but it is a good one nevertheless.

Patrick Seitz- Well this is an interesting change of pace for Patrick as to be honest I couldn't even tell that it was him at first. But still Patrick was a bit of an improvement from Wally as his voice and performance for the role suited on how Cervantes is a gruff evil old pirate well. (In which I noticed on how Patrick's work on the role suited on how Cervantes has regained his humanity in V but is still very much an evil pirate.) Basically a pretty good example of Patrick Seitz's work and is a good example that he does have some range there.

Overall I liked Warren and Patrick the most but Barry and Wally are not too far behind in this regard.

Ahoy landlubbers! In honor-a talk like a pirate day I'm givin' me full opinion on the voices of Cervantes. Arrrrr

Barry Gjerde: His voice is too light and could be really inconsistent. He sounds too much like an average guy and not a bloodthirsty pirate.

Warren Rodgerson: I swear that every time I hear him he gets better. That throaty growl in his voice is a perfect fit. The way his voice trails off gives him a decrepit sound that works really well for an undead pirate. And that savage delivery of his battle cries is an unmatched compliment to the animal that Cervantes is. You just can't beat him.

Wally Wingert: He has some similar delivery to Warren, but the lighter voice doesn't carry nearly the same impact. At least he's better than Barry.

Patrick Seitz: He's the most stereotypical pirate voice of the lot which is okay as it's still not overdone. He also lacks the undead qualities of Warren and Wally, but it fits for what Cervantes had become in V. It's a solid take although I think there's room for improvement.

Overall rank:
1.Warren Rodgerson
2.Wally Wingert and Patrick Seitz(tie)
3. Barry Gjerde

Personally, I'd like to hear Jim Cummings as Cervantes, but Warren Rodgerson gets my vote.

I own both Soul Calibur 2 and 3 along with the first game. but I gotta say, I never knew who voiced Cervantes in games number two and three until now. my first choice is definitely Warren Rodgerson and for second place is Wally Wingert. Patrick sounds decent by the sound clips I've heard.

JAT or Mark Hamill should play him next.

@pete Mark Hamill and Brian Doyle Murray.

@SupremeTarantulas Where exactly would JAT come from? I was thinking someone like John DiMaggio or Steve Blum would be appropriate. Bonus points that I think DiMaggio as Ganondorf (who was also voiced Nagasako in Japanese) would be good too.

@huzaifa_ahmed I corrected this so don't remember unless JAT did a role similar to this and I forgot.

If you mean who I'm referring too though, James Arnold Taylor.

Barry sounds FAR too light for a bloodthirsty pirate being a main antagonist.

I would have to agree that Warren blows everyone out of the water *no pun intended* on this one.
Sinister, powerful and slightly chilling on top of some good acting, he has my vote instantly.

Wally probably comes closest, he has a good pirate voice that has some threat in it. My issue: the voice is a little high.

Patrick as usual, is a great actor and while the voice was a little high, Cervantes did have some threat in the voice.

Rodgerson. I just love it when he says "Stop struggling!".

Voting for Warren Rodgerson, he has this awesome deep sinister voice, fitting for the undead Cervantes and I for one liked his shouting especially his "COME WITH ME TO HELL!" line, its absolutely classic.

However, Wally Wingert is a pretty close second and to be fair he does sound more like a pirate than Warren does, but his higher voice doesn't quite have the same menace as Warren's, granted his voice is still pretty intimidating and cool, but it just feels like there's something missing and admittedly I wouldn't have minded if he tried making his voice sound a little deeper. But overall its a fairly good fit, I used to hate his voice but I have gotten used to it over time, Wally grew on me and is a VERY close second but I still prefer Warren overall.

Patrick Seitz...yeah, I don't really like his performance, yes I do understand Cervantes is human again, but to me he just sounds generic and not very pirate-like either. However at least the acting is decent.

Barry Gjerde...the acting sounds completely off, and the voice itself is way too forced for my liking. Sorry Barry, I like your cheesy Barry Burton performance, but you just don't do it for me as Cervantes.

So yeah, going with Warren Rodgerson, with Wally Wingert as a close second, I didn't care much for the rest.

@Metabad Changed my mind a bit, Barry's acting isn't as bad as I thought, but Warren and Wally still both blow his performance out of the water.

What I especially like about Warren's shouting is how it actually makes him sound decrepit, he seriously makes for a good convincing undead pirate, whereas Wally, while good, just sounds like an average pirate.
