Shadow the Hedgehog

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Shadow the Hedgehog with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Sonic the Hedgehog

Shadow was created 50 years ago by Professor Gerald as "the Ultimate Life Form". Shadow was originally evil, wanting to destroy humanity for taking his only friend, Maria, but has since become something of a reluctant ally to Sonic and his friends after realizing the error of his ways. He is a very popular character, but has something of a divisive fanbase.

1. Jason Griffith- Sounds edgy and dark as well as mysterious. Overall it's perfect nothing more needed to be said.
2. Kirk Thornton- While good acting wise he sounds a bit old. Yes I know Kirk can do younger voices but here it doesn't show or fit.
3. David Humphrey- His voice is beyond awkward and his performance is wooden to say the least. Granted it has a good rasp but he needed to perfect his acting or get a better director.

After playing Forces, my vote is definitely staying with Kirk! He finally gave the performance I always knew he could give! Part of it is writing; He's not generic school bully Shadow anymore. He's back to being straight up badass. The voice itself isn't forced anymore. It kinda sounds like He was told to emulate Dave Humphrey a little.

Updated Opinions:

1. David Humphrey
I wasn't very clear at first, so let me say this, David DID a FANTASTIC job on shadow. He did a great way of introducing the character since his debut on sonic adventure 2, he's my second fave voice for shadow.

2. Jason Griffith
While he's my second fave voice for sonic, he's for me THE Shadow the Hedgehog. He was the first voice of taste i got of shadow since Sonic X, for me he made shadow sound i always think of. Infact he's more better as shadow than sonic himself.

3. Kirk Thornton
Yes while i admit, i was NOT a big fan of his take on shadow than he was as Orbot. even considering how i hated how shadow was handled in free riders since i HATE that game, but i must say, at the season 2 finale of boom and Sonic Forces, HE REALLY IMPROVED. I couldn't even tell if shadow's voice was replaced or not but wow... He did improved on Shadow. Much Better than the likes of generations and free riders (Seriously screw that game).

I decided to change my vote to Jason, although David's still good. I will admit, though, that Jason kind of sounded like a "dark Sonic" at times (especially in 'Sonic X'). Also, I think that saying he was better as Shadow than as Sonic is somewhat subjective, but I'm not going to argue over that. (I, for some reason, seem to like him more as Sonic than as Shadow, however.) If Jason sounded closer to his Joe Shimamura voice, I think he could've done a little better at distinguishing his Shadow from Sonic.

I swear, the more I listen to Shadow's English voice actors, the more I think Griffith's "Chaos _______" shouts just has that impact that the other two just seem to lack. The other 2, while still good, just felt.... weak, in comparison (for lack of a better term)

My opinions on the VAs:

3. Kirt Thornton - Definitely can see why it's rated the weakest. The attitude just isn't there and the voice can be very inconsistent at times. There's room for improvement but overall not that good of a performance.

2. Jason Griffith - Pretty decent and got better as time went on but most of the time, Griffith seems like he's whispering when he voices Shadow. He does however capture the mysteriousness of the character so props to that. Overall, really good if a bit lacking in some areas.

1. David Humphrey - I'll keep this short since a lot of people have said it already. David's voice for the character was just right. Threatening, mysterious, menacing and deep all in one. Literally have nothing else to say.

1. David Humphrey - He makes Shadow sound intelligent, menacing, and badass as well. And never once came off as a wannabe "tough guy" in the role. The slight accent he uses also adds character to his performance, and while I slightly prefer his performance in SA2 but his Heroes one was pretty enjoyable as well.

2. Jason Griffith - When he first started playing Shadow in Sonic X he sounded REALLY forced IMO. And made the character come off as a wannabe "tough guy" unfortunately. He definitely improved in the later games though. And while he never surpassed Humphrey for me, he definitely did some great work as the character as well overall.

3. Kirk Thornton - I love him as a VA but I've never been too fond of his Shadow unfortunately. The tone he's using just sounds so off for the character... It's also a shame because he's played other characters like Shadow a lot better in the past I believe? Either way he's definitely the weakest voice for Shadow here unfortunately.

@HylianBelmont Yeah, if Kirk did something like his Jin/Brandon Heat voice I think he'd fit Shadow a lot more.

You know, I'll always be a little disappointed they didn't go the 4Kids route and have Roger Craig Smith voice Shadow and Sonic like Griffith did. Would he have done a good job, especially at making sure Shadow's voice was distinct and that it didn't sound like a voice Sonic was putting on? I dunno. But it definitely would've been interesting.
said at 6:26 PM on Thu Mar 16 2017
@Bookman230 I think they had the right idea to cast Kirk Thornton as Shadow...they're just...not directing him well at all unfortunately. If he used something like his Jin/Brandon Heat voice I think he'd sound a lot more natural in the role and be a much better fit for Shadow.

@Metabad That overly EDGAY writing put into him in the later works probably didn't help either

Shadow as a character has always been... a weird one for me to talk about. I don't hate him nor particularly dislike him, but feel he's never quite been used properly, with the exception of his original debut in SA2 and, as weird as this may sound, Sonic '06 of all things. As for his VAs, none of them are yet quite perfect...

...but Jason Griffith, I'd rank as my top choice. It was definitely awkward at the start and the emphasis problem was there, but I felt - especially through Shadow's solo game - Jason got the swing of Shadow a lot faster than he did Sonic. His voice matched up pretty well with the character, and he managed to bring an emotive spectrum that, really, got some pretty good moments even; balancing both stern serious, arrogant overconfidence and even humanizing empathy and melancholy. Not perfect, but definitely the best.

David Humphrey... I've never been big on this one, like Ryan Drummond as Sonic. The slight accent was a bit distracting to listen to and, coupled with the actual lines and delivery, I don't really feel Shadow was ever uuiiite a distinctive character--just a darker, "cooler" Sonic, with that same smarmy attitude. Which, I get, as Shadow is Sonic's rival... but I felt that Shadow, in execution, was a far more one-note character than the narrative wanted him to be. But I'll rank Humphrey as a decent second. That accent's still off though.

And Kirk... I haven't yet heard him in Lego Dimensions, but... if it were closer to his Isa/Saix, as NCZ commented, he could probably even be my favourite. But Shadow's character has been reduced to just a gravelly schoolyard bully, with a tendency for weird over-emphasis of certain words and a hiss in his voice that makes him sound too old. Physically, he's still meant to be about 15; Kirk's voice just sounds 30-40 years too old, and really one-note. Which is a real shame.

1. Jason Griffith
2. David Humphrey
3. Kirk Thornton

CASTING COUCH: If I were to cast one of the newer VAs as Shadow, I think Max Mittelman would definitely be a solid successor to the role. His Leo (Fire Emblem: Fates) particularly encapsulates both a youthfully deep voice, without forcing the gruffness and aggression, and he's also got the talent to balance a dry wit, arrogance, anger and sadness. Alternatively, thanks to FFXV, I also think Ray Chase could make for a potentially INSANELY GOOD Shadow: his Noctis hit all the right beats, imho, for the sort of character that Shadow could be--quiet, blunt, aloof-at-times, passionate when angry, genuinely melancholic when sad... Yeah, either of these two could nail it, I think.

@NCZ Yup and I hate to say this but I think Ryan Drummond should've voiced Shadow in SA2 instead of David Humphrey. Don't get me wrong, David Humphrey was a decent Shadow but Humphrey sounded too awkward and flat at times, espeically in Sonic Adventure 2! He did get a bit better as Shadow in Heroes but he still came off as a little flat and not fitting for Shadow which is why I think that they should've went with Ryan Drummond as Shadow (in my opinion) because Ryan's Shadow sounds better then David's Shadow in SA2! No offense if you like David Humphrey's voice for Shadow but I am just not a big fan of him!

Ryan Drummond's Shadow sounds like a cross between David Humphrey and Jason Griffith's performances to me: I'd actually prefer it to what we have now, but that's another story.

said at 4:09 PM on Sat Jan 28 2017
@WrightWay Yeah, but in Lego Dimensions, Kirk Thornton sort of sounds like Ryan Drummond's original take on Shadow (which I like), otherwise, he just sounds too old for Shadow and sounds too much like David Humphrey if he had smoked too much!
said at 4:12 PM on Sat Jan 28 2017
(Unfortunately, I have to agree with your description of it otherwise.)
said at 4:19 PM on Sat Jan 28 2017
@WrightWay Yeah. And in terms of Shadow, I actually prefer Jason Griffith over David Humphrey. Jason IS Shadow for me, and his Sonic is great as well. David sounded too awkward & flat as Shadow at times and not in a good way while my opinion on Ryan Drummond's Sonic is similar to my opinion on Nathan Price's Meowth.
said at 4:29 PM on Sat Jan 28 2017
I sort of feel the reverse in that I feel Jason Griffith had a rough start as Shadow sounding a bit monotone and flat, but I admit he improved later. Sonic...J. Griffith never quite managed to win me over in the way some like Jaleel White (as nasally as it was, I found it cute) & Ryan Drummond did, but like his Shadow, it did get better over time.

I prefer David Humphrey's take here, but I admit I can see your stance as well.
said at 5:15 PM on Sat Jan 28 2017
@WrightWay Yeah, I feel that if David were less awkward and flat, he would've been pretty decent for Shadow (although I still prefer Jason Griffith). As for Ryan's Sonic performance, it wasn't his fault that it sounded cheesy at times, it was the poor voice direction's fault (which at the time, Lani Minella, the original VA for Rouge, was the voice director). I love
Jason Griffith as Sonic because he had put his heart and soul into the character. In my opinion, Jason Griffith is to Sonic as Kevin Conroy is to Batman. As for his Shadow, yes while he sucked as Shadow in Sonic X at first, by Shadow the Hedgehog (2005), he got a lot better with his Shadow voice.

As for Jaleel White, while he did fit the Americanized classic Sonic very well, the performance was bad, sounding like a combo of Steve Urkel and Bugs Bunny as braces, but he is not as bad as Martin Burke or Meg Inglima. After all, Jaleel White was the voice of Sonic in the era of when Sonic didn't have a voice in the games yet (aside from the early cartoons) so I can't blame him since Jaleel is not expected to be perfect as Sonic!
said at 5:23 PM on Sat Jan 28 2017
I think David to his credit got more emotional and less dull in Adventure 2 & Heroes, but fair enough. And I think Ryan actually had superior vocal direction from Lani Minella and he did remarkably well, but I guess I can see your point. I feel the way you do on Jason about Ryan for Sonic, actually, lol- there is some stuff I thought 4Kids directed decently when they were actually not dead, but Sonic isn't one of those franchises for me.

Yeah, for classic Sonic, my favorite is Jaleel but I admit those were some issues, but it still wasn't as poor as those two or Sam Vincent's singing voice for him (though yeah, it does sound a bit like Urkel, I concede that's true).
said at 5:31 PM on Sat Jan 28 2017
@WrightWay Yeah. In fact, the way I feel about Ryan Drummond as Sonic is the same way I feel about Nathan Price as Meowth. They both had this cheesy voice for those characters and both performances in their respective franchises (Sonic & Pokémon) sounded flat and very off at times, but were still really good voice actors for them.

Samuel Vincent, as much as I dislike his singing voice for Sonic, he would not actually be that bad for Sonic's Canadian voice. And Keiko Utoku (yes, the voice of Sonic in CD, was in fact, a woman) was way better as Sonic in Sonic CD then Meg Inglima, even if she didn't have much to work with.
said at 5:33 PM on Sat Jan 28 2017
Understandable- I like the cheesiness, I suppose, so it works for me.

True on Keiko vs. Meg, Meg was pretty feminine & nasally as Sonic there, but we all know that much.
said at 6:15 PM on Sat Jan 28 2017
@WrightWay Yeah. Also I think if they had replaced Roger Craig Smith, I think
Josh Keaton should voice Sonic in the future. What do you think of that?

1. David Humphrey:

David brought actual depth, character, and emotion to the role, and I'm of the opinion the slight accent he used actually added to his performance's appeal. He was able to sound menacing, but he was also able to sound cool at the same time, without sounding forced.

2. Jason Griffith:

While it was much better than his Sonic was, his delivery was often stilted and he struggled at times to get his acting balanced. Still, his voice was good as well as fitting for the role, and his acting got better later on.

3. Kirk Thornton:

Even now, he sounds very old, rough, as well as too gruff for association with Shadow, and struggles to emote without sounding strained in the part. While it's not the worst performance I've heard in the franchise, it's disappointing considering he's had so long to get used to the role.

These days, I find Kirk Thornton to be a little grating as Shadow. I didn't think it would happen at first back in 2010 because I felt he had the potential to fit his performance into Shadow's personality over time.

But after seeing how Shadow was portrayed in that Sonic Boom episode...his voice has become pretty gruff and it doesn't click with me at all now. Doesn't help that Shadow is now portrayed as a short-tempered schoolyard bully (as NCZ said) compared to how he was once like before.

This is probably a result of how the voice producers and directors want Kirk Thornton to perform as Shadow now, but regardless, I like him a little less voicing Shadow now. David Humphrey is still my favorite voice, but I will now rank Kirk (narrowly) below Jason Griffith.

Yeah, if Kirk's Shadow was more like his Saix, he'd be a lot better. I dunno if he'd be my all-time favourite but he definitely has the ability to at least pull something off. The more growly, vampirey direction they've been taking with him so far just doesn't work for Shadow's character.

@NCZ Well, I have NOTHING against Kirk as a voice actor, but what if he either had a better director or was replaced?

Jason Griffith is the best by far. He sounded too much like Sonic in Sonic X, but in Shadow the Hedgehog, he expertly captures the brooding anti-hero with a tortured past. His delivery can is hammy at times, but I feel this had a bit to do with direction. Besides, his over-the-top acting actually adds to Shadow the Hedgehog's appeal as a hilariously simple attempt at being dark and edgy.

David Humphrey is the runner-up. His voice is alright, but the slight accent doesn't work for the role, and some of his delivery was a bit weak.

I get that the franchise is ditching most of the side characters due to fan complaints, and that Shadow has been a hilariously-serious villain in recent appearances, but Kirk Thornton's voice just doesn't match the character at all. His delivery is competent, but lacks that extra effort that might make his performance memorable. This isn't Shadow the Hedgehog.

And even if I DID like this new direction, Kirk Thornton was still a bad choice. Why didn't you cast Cripsin Freeman, Liam O'Brien, Matthew Mercer, or heck, Troy Baker?
Queen of Horror
said at 5:18 PM on Thu Jun 2 2016
@ScottMyers Hmmm, I could see Matthew Mercer's voice for Shadow now that I think about it.

And yes, I have to agree, Griffith does sound better as Shadow in the games.
said at 4:10 PM on Fri Jun 24 2016
@ScottMyers I honestly have to disagree with you there, while i think he actually did the anti-hero matter here in Shadow the Hedgehog, he still sounds like a darker sonic, which he tried too hard to differentiate from his Sonic's.

Kirk's i agree with you there, if he had the Isa's / Saix's voice, he would actually sound a lot better than what Jason could come up with, but i still think he won't even match up to the distinctive voice level of what David has.

Personally i think that Justin Gross would do a decent shadow if he decided to get back into voice acting gigs.

I think that Matthew had already voiced Espio, so does Troy Baker.

Which for me, he should voice a new character that hadn't gotten into the series.

Hint: a dog type character that Sonic was originally chosen, until he has been picked as a Hedgehog.

But hey each to their own, it's your opinion and it's mine.
said at 8:39 PM on Sun Jun 26 2016
@SteelEthlan In regards to Matthew Mercer and Troy Baker, I was recommending them from mostly a speculative standpoint. I know realistically, it would be odd for them to voice two different characters in the franchise. But look at it this way; since Sonic Boom, Colleen O'Shaugnessy voices both Tails AND Charmy Bee, even though she had already been cast as the latter when chosen for the latter. And the TV series has all of the characters voiced by actors already a part of the principal Sonic Boom cast (except for Bill Frierberger, the showrunner who voices a couple characters). So, it doesn't seem implausible Mercer/Baker could voice Shadow.

As for Shadow, I will admit that Jason Griffith uses a similar delivery style when voicing Shadow as he does when playing Sonic, but I feel the emotional range, and the suave yet husky quality his voice has carries his performance. David has his moments (his death scene at the end of Adventure 2 was really well delivered), but I believe his voice is too light for the role and his deliveries of lines like "Faker? I think you're the fake hedgehog around here", "I'm the coolest" stand out as to juvenile for the character. (Though writing is at least half to blame for this).
said at 9:45 AM on Wed Jul 13 2016
@SteelEthlan I don't mean to offend you by any means, but I kind of think that Jason's Shadow would sound a lot better with this voice:

said at 8:55 PM on Tue Aug 2 2016
@SteelEthlan Oh, and another thing I'd like to add is that Jason would probably tone down the whole "dark Sonic" kind of inflection in his voice, so there you go.

If it weren't for Shadow, the Internet would never milk that "Ow the Edge" meme for all its worth, but that's besides the point. Anyway, whilst I enjoy both David and Jason's portrayals in spite of the material at hand, I'm really partial towards the former overall; especially in SA2. Alongside Deem Bristow as Eggman, Humphrey managed to churn out one of the best performances in the Adventure series.

Kirk Thornton, however... Oh, boy. While decent as the character in Free Riders and Generations, he outright sucks regarding Boom. I blame the characterization more so than the direction itself, but in the end, let's just say that Studiopolis had better choices they could've chose from. Thornton is one of my favorite anime VAs, and yet Shadow Android is not one of his finest roles (I'm putting it nicely).

I think the main problem with Kirk's Shadow voice is how the writers are handling the character. The writers just overdo Shadow's personality and put him there for the sake of fan-service. And you know what? It makes no sense at all. Shadow's purpose in a Sonic game's story is to add depth to it. You see, he doesn't fit quite well in the recent plots.

Speaking of Kirk's Shadow, if you like him, more power to you, but he does NOT sound like a "proper voice" for Shadow (I'm looking at you, Smash The Oni). Instead, he sounds like Kisame Hoshigaki from Naruto. Don't get me wrong, Kisame is a great anime villain, but that's NOT how Shadow's supposed to sound. And there's no way I'll ever say that he's better than David or Jason.

Overall, I guess those are the reasons why many find Kirk miscast as Shadow.

I think the one flaw with Jason's Shadow is that he sometimes sounded like a dark version of his Sonic. However, I still prefer Jason over Kirk. He did his best to make his Shadow sound distinct from Sonic, and I think he did that pretty well, but you know what I mean. I actually like him as Sonic more.

Kirk seems to have changed his voice for Shadow for the Sonic Boom cartoon. Before it was kinda drawly; like some weird combo of Saix and Jin (but less laconic). His Boom voice is... weird.

1. Kirk Thornton. Sounds like a proper voice for Shadow. Has the edge David lacked and doesn't sound terrible like Jason.

2. David Humphrey. Fits the cocky roll that Shadow has, and I especially like hearing him yell.

3. Jason Griffith. It's just his Sonic voice but edgy, and I already find his Sonic voice terrible.

@Smash The Oni No offense, but I think you meant to say "role" instead of "roll" in relation to David. Just pointing out. Also, even though I disagree with your opinion, I have nothing against it. Opinions are opinions, and they deserve to be respected.

I fast-forward to Sonic Boom, and Thornton still sounds horrid to me...

I prefer Griffith for the same reasons why I prefer Mike Pollock as Doctor Eggman:

With Humphrey, he does convey that Shadow was a tragic anti-hero, and smug rival to Sonic. But I feel as though he didn't really convey Shadow's serious side enough, and thus making his Shadow come off as some practical joker trying to do his best impersonation of Solid Snake's voice.. Jason, IMHO, improves on that, and can sound smug as well, as well as conveying emotions.. He doesn't really sound emo to me at all, since that's the writing style of the games Shadow appeared in.. To me, Griffith worked upon and improved what I feel Humphrey lacked in, thus making it better for me..

David gave Shadow real depth and had a tragic feeling to his take on the character.

Jason's Shadow was a lot better than his Sonic, I will say that, but still like PurpleWarrior13 said he was flat-sounding.

Kirk's Shadow is really bad. I've heard him in several other Series, and I know he's capable of a lot better than this. As it stands, though, my thoughts on him in the role are sadly best expressed by

I still like David the most. He has this really dark, but tragic sound to his voice that works well for an anti-hero character. It also sounds really cool! Kirk sounds fine, but a little antagonistic. I give props to Jason for sounding different from his Sonic, but his actual performance was pretty forced and flat-sounding.

David Humphrey. i think he dosen't fit for shadow at all. i mean like, when he voices him he sounds way off and also a bit weird in my opinion. but he was good in Sonic Heroes but still he needs to work more on his role for shadow.

Jason Griffith. Number 1 on my list and is also the best voice for Shadow and sound like a truly badass and should return his role as shadow. but i also like kirk's take on him aswell.

Kirk Thornton. Number 1 with jason (so far). when i heard him on sonic free riders. i loved his take on shadow. he sounds a bit similar to jason but really is and truly a good voice for shadow. i don't know why so many people hated his take on him so much. i think he is the best!

@sonicmechaomega999 No offense, but people dislike Kirk's take on Shadow because of how badly he portrays the character. Lines like "I have no interest in these formalities. Allow me to give me a recap for my opinion of which voice actors suit best for shadow starting here:

#1) David Humphrey: In my opinion about his take on Shadow when he first appeared in the original Sonic Adventure 2 (And it's port of this game such as Battle & HD. Remaster on the other hand, would be a different thing) i thought he preformed his take on shadow well on his first try that he gives off smooth, classically dark, young, emotional, and yet at first vengefully evil against the humans (Truthfully G.U.N) for killing every humans and scientists that were on board in the ARK especially to Shadow's only friend Maria Robotnik and you know where i'm getting ahead.

#2) Jason Griffith: At first for Jason not to offend him but, his voice of Shadow sounds more like a dark version sonic than his own character which for honesty doesn't seem to be well diversed as David did and he his voice hasn't gotten more improvement of his classical dark version of Super Sonic (Yes guys i'm going to call him a classical dark version of Super Sonic because for me his design is predictably based on Super Sonic himself) until maybe in later games. But, at least he still has quite the smoothness and you get the idea.

#3) Kirk Thornton: And now for Kirk, Pheh i just thought he would've done totally better as making him what he was once before, classically dark and other kinds of his personality but for now he sounds bizarrely dark which kinda water downs his diverse tone of voice that Kirk for me, but i digress.

For alternative choice long before 4kids been bankrupt i think that Marc Diraison should've been the one voicing Shadow but, eh what am i going to say here?

As for my future Studiopolis dream cast Voice of Shadow...I don't have any clue i'll just have to think up another for the forums.
said at 7:06 PM on Thu Jun 4 2015
@SteelEthlan Forget what i said about the whole "Marc Diraison should've been the voice of shadow" thing that i would personally discard that idea of mine, i think what would suit shadow the best and what could've been at the 4Kids to voice shadow himself from the start is: Erik Davies that's the guy that could've just been the official voice of shadow that can match both David and Kirk instead of Jason because to me, i still do not like the idea of him being the "darker version of sonic" thing i dunno. But i still put Jason on second place none the less.

I never liked Griffith as Sonic but his Shadow is the best of the group: really dark, brooding, and intimidating while also retaining some humanity.

Humphrey is pretty good, but came off a little flat.

Kirk sounds like he's trying to be dark but coming off as emo and too much like his much, much better Hajime Saito voice from Rurouni Kenshin.

No disrespect to Kirk Thornton, but I just don't think his Shadow voice is working out at all. After listening to his performance in Boom, I feel he's getting progressively worse in each game. The vampire-esque voice is still pretty bad and just doesn't suit the character in the slightest. In addition to that, the lisp and the eccentrically strange enunciation of words also make the voice sound even more weird.

He also makes Shadow sound overly villanous. It's not just that though. I feel the recent writing has also let him down. Ever since he took over the role, Shadow's development has just kinda stopped and as a character, he's become more antagonistic than anything else. Boom Shadow was absolutely horrible.

I feel that he's badly miscasted as Shadow here. It's just not sitting right with me.

Jason Griffith. I said he's the best because his voice sound natural while he's voice is a little dead and he projet emotion like david did but still pretty great.

Krik Thornton. Oh my god what can I say he is horrible I don't hear a shadow in him all I heard is my grandfather trying to voice shadow he didn't improve in sonic boom like some of the other VA's did I'm sorry I just think he need to be replace.

Shadow's VAs have never been particularly great.

1. David Humphrey. He laid the groundwork for what Shadow sounds like, and he puts a lot of powerful energy into him that Jason and Kirk don't have. The problem is that even in Heroes, his acting wasn't that great, and he sounds like he's trying to hide an accent half the time. Overall, it's a little awkward but he has the energy.

2. Jason Griffith. He does some things better than David, sounding a lot more natural and less awkward, but the way he plays Shadow is more boring. He never deviates from sounding cold and emotionless, which I don't think suits Shadow's character all that well.

3. Kirk Thornton. This is a sad, sad case of an actor not knowing what to do, when he has the potential to be the best Shadow voice ever.

When he first started, he was horrible, and in Boom he's just weird, like he's trying to sound like Brian Drummond's Vegeta. Listen to Saix in Kingdom Hearts 2, and you'll see what Kirk is capable of. If he played Shadow like Saix, and raised his pitch a little bit maybe, he'd sound perfect IMO.

But as of now, he just isn't good. It's not quite a miscast, I think he just doesn't know what to do. He tried imitating Jason, then he tried an original take, and neither of them worked.

I'm probably the only one who actually doesn't mind Thornton in Sonic Boom. Granted, his material is laughably bad (although I still feel Shadow the Hedgehog had slightly worse writing) but I think his voice feels a lot more fitting. I'd still rather he use his Jin/Brandon Heat voice since that kind of voice would be perfect for Shadow, but despite the iffy material his voice itself is growing on me.

I'm still not really feeling Kirk Thornton in Sonic Boom. He's kind of like Brian Drummond's Vegeta (who I enjoy mind you) in sounding way too villainous for an anti-hero. Then again, Shadow is a MAJOR douchebag in that continuity (not helped by his lack of backstory)!!! So you could say it fits in that regard. Still it makes Shadow about as bland as Jordan Belfort (who in IMO, is one of the worst villains I've seen in a movie).

@DravenRoth994 It's the bad writing in Rise of Lyric that's really at fault. What direction can be given on a character who shows up out of absolutely nowhere and leaves right after?
NCZ (Admin)
said at 9:46 PM on Fri Nov 14 2014
@Nightmare Crusher Best of all, they gave him lines like:

"You know what makes you weak? Your loyalty to your pathetic friends!"

I don't know why they decided to characterize Shadow as an elementary schoolyard bully caricature, but they did. I was half-expecting him to tell Sonic to "make like a tree and get outta here". This is writing that makes Shadow's game from 2005 look like Othello.

With all that said, I have to agree that Kirk's Shadow isn't clicking for me. He's a great voice actor, but he feels badly miscast. Orbot is a much better use of his talents.
said at 9:50 PM on Fri Nov 14 2014
@Nightmare Crusher Fair enough. I haven't played the game myself yet (and judging by the videos I've seen, I don't think I want to), but from what I've seen of his boss fights in both versions, he did seem shoehorned in. It's like he was added as an afterthought!!
said at 10:13 PM on Fri Nov 14 2014
I forgot to mention the writing. From the little I've seen, it just feels really sloppy and incoherent. When Sonic and Tails fell through the floor, they respond with:

"We fell through a trap door!"
"We can't get back up!"

Shadows introduction was just random, and he say that line NCZ mentioned. While main series Shadow was a complex individual, this Shadow just goes out of his way to act like a prick!! Hopefully, that will change.

David Humphrey: I still think this is the best Shadow. Without a doubt, his voice, acting, and inflections in Heroes were all great and I can take him more seriously as someone who's got more of a character dynamic to him outside of being a super serious brooder. "Cool City", "Hmph. Too easy for me!", "Something's never change do they?" He sounds like someone you could actually approach and talk to in that game.

Jason Griffith: I don't know if its the dialogue or the direction they went with him but for some reason, I'm not all for his voice in Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06. All I got from him was this feeling of boredom whenever he spoke. The voice he's using sounds great on its own but when it comes to range (especially in 06 on that) and his ability to make Shadow convincingly sound like a somebody with inflections behind what they're saying, I was personally a little left in the dark.

Kirk Thornton: Kirk hear doesn't have that problem for me when it comes to being dynamic and having inflections and coming off as someone relatively approachable for conversation and what not. It's just the voice itself he's using doesn't fit the way it is. I've seen snippets of his voice that sound like they could make a perfect Shadow but his main one is that of his old Kisame Hoshigaki voice, which doesn't work here. His Saix voice would even fit better then this. He has to improve or the voice director needs to make a change on how they want him to say this stuff.

1-: David Humphrey: One of the best starts for any Sonic character. He captured Shadow's emotional side perfectly, and could sound deliciously dark and sinister at times without sounding forced.
2-: Kirk Thornton: Quite under rated IMO. His voice is a good fit for the character, and the slightly monotone voice is great for Shadow. He sounded a bit over the top in Free Riders, but hearing him in the rival boss in Sonic Generations makes me know he's got a great Shadow in him.
3-: Jason Griffith: Painfully over rated. He sounded way too serious and gruff for Shadow, and comes off as a bit of an emo voice. The acting is fine, but it's not a voice I like for Shadow.

@Adjeras That last comment of mine sounds really passive-aggressive and I kinda regret that. Gah.

At any rate, I thought David had by far the most personality of all of Shadow's voices, especially in Adventure 2. Shadow is often taken as a one-note character (because let's face it, from Heroes onward, he essentially is), but David Humphrey's performance made him seem like a believable and three-dimensional character. In his whole "Faker?" spiel, he sounds like he genuinely takes pleasure in taunting Sonic and fully believes he's b, for example. The more poignant moments toward the end of the story were effectively-delivered too. As a character, Shadow was at his best in SA2, and David Humphrey got maximum mileage out of him. Even in Heroes when Shadow began his decline into the stock "cool dark anti-hero dude" archetype, he managed to at least perform him in a way that was more than that.

Jason had a tone and voice that were fine for Shadow's neutral/brooding moments, but he tended to sound awkward whenever he needed to emote.

Kirk Thornton has barely had any real material (which will change with Sonic Boom) to really get into character. He's a good voice actor so I hope he doesn't get caught in the same pratfall.

My thoughts updated:

Well first off: I actually do agree with DreamMaster08X's views on Shadow, I honestly didn't get why David was so popular either. My guess is that he originated it, or people thought Shadow's "personality" change from Heroes to "Shadow the Hedgehog" was jarring for them.
Bottom line: I never liked David that much, in Adventure 2 he just sounds bland but he did better in Heroes even with smaller material.

Secondly: even though I liked Jason, I didn't think he was great either. I could see why people thought he couldn't act, but in some games like here, and The Black Knight for example, he can be a decent actor. Like most people have said so, I still think he fits Shadow and I still liked him.

Lastly: Kirk. Well, at first obviously I hated his voice. it sounded like Shadow was trying to be a 60s hippy or something and it just didn't fit, but then again Kirk has had very little to work with, so I'll defiantly give him a chance to improve, and being the actor that he is I'm sure he can.

So for now Jason has my vote, but I'll wait to see if Kirk's performance improves. Thanks for listening. :-)

I honestly have to say... ...I don't get it. Looking into David's performance, I have a bone to pick with it: I can't get into it.

Looking deeply into these three roles before and after looking into this VC, Humphrey has not left a single impression on me. It sounds so monotone and rather blatant (not the good kind). Everytime he spoke, it felt much too underplayed. And while I understand that he is the original Shadow, I don't think that ALWAYS entitle to it being the absolute best.

Griffiths, on the other hand, left SOME form of an impression on me. I can't really say that it is undoubtedly perfect, but to me, it sounded right. Whenever I look and Shadow the Hedgedog, this is exactly how I imagined him to sound like. Sure, it's an anti-hero-type take, but in my honest opinion, it works.

Kirk, unfortunately, would have to fall dead last. While I'm not a big fan of David's take, I understand what he's try to get across; it just doesn't work for me. Here... I'm not too such WHAT Kirk was trying to go for. It's just rather

@HyperVoiceActing Notice a huge spike in interest for David. People also still go by the belief that Griffith sounded emo.
said at 12:03 PM on Mon Oct 21 2013
@Ross123 - I never said he was wrong, I just find it hard to believe he considers Griffith, who on almost every website I go to say he's the best Shadow, "underrated". If anything he'd be qualified as overrated (not say he is or isn't)

@Adjeras - Kinda deviating away from the two actors real quick, but most people I talk to actually WANT Shadow to sound emo. And I have to ask, why?
said at 12:09 PM on Mon Oct 21 2013
@HyperVoiceActing Most people hold that against Griffith whereas some praise David for it. I'm sorry, but I'll never prefer David, I hope you can accept that.
said at 3:21 PM on Thu Oct 31 2013
@HyperVoiceActing I think both are ideal for Shadow an that both have a unique take at Shadow. David gives Shadow an isolated, mature yet young voice people wanted from an anti-hero. Whereas Jason's voice gave off the ideal voice for a wise, powerful Shadow. David gives the youthful voice that sounds like a guy who wants to rule with an iron fist, as well as a well written dynamic character, wehcich he is, and Jason sounds like a hero who, like Sagat from Street Fighter, doesn't. Show his heroic nature in feelings and expressions, but in the actions and nobility he gives off.

They're all perfect fits, but I have to go with David Humphrey for sounding so deliciously dark and sinister. Kirk Thorton comes second, doing a slightly higher version of his Saix voice. Jason comes last: it's good, but it's just a "dark Sonic" voice and way too over-the-top edgy anti-hero, which I do not like the character as.

David Humphrey. No. Doubt. When I hear Jason, I basically just think "Evil Sonic" as opposed to him being his own character. Humphrey just sounds so friggin cool, smooth. Probably the only actor from the Dreamcast era that I'm still today going "NO WAIT COME BACK!" Even though I loved all the voice from the Dreamcast era. But I do prefer Kirk Thornton over Jason.
said at 6:08 PM on Tue Oct 1 2013
@Soldierkei - I agree. I still think Kirk can be a great Shadow, he just needs more time to get into the character.

Then again people refuse to let him have that chance
said at 11:52 PM on Wed Oct 2 2013
@Soldierkei Completely agree. Humphrey also gave Shadow a bit of smugness that the other actors have yet to do.

"Faker? I think you're the fake hedgehog around here!"

Such an awesome line and I love Humphrey's delivery on it. Granted the reason why Shadow isn't like that anymore is due to how Shadow's character is written nowadays. Sega has pretty much turned him into Sonic's anti-heroish rival and outside of that he doesn't have much else going for him.

I think David Humphrey has a much better grasp on Shadow's character than the rest. Jason's Shadow is overrated, and I think Kirk could be good as Shadow if he had more time to get use to the character.

Also, to add onto the discussion of possible Shadow voice actors that's been brewing over here, is it weird to say that I think Jeff Bennett would make a good Shadow? I always thought his Brooklyn voice would fit Shadow well

Reason for justifying our voice actor suggestions for Shadow:

Chris Sabat could bring out the stoic or grouchy side.
Mark Hamill just screams crazy & psychotic (God forbid, if Shadow ever goes down that path again).
D.C. Douglas has that cockiness & overconfidence down-pat.
Johnny Yong Bosch could have more of a smoother attitude.
Crispin Freeman's just a natural in roles like this.
Liam O'Brien can fit the pure evil part (if Shadow ever becomes a full-on villain again like he was in SA2).
Micah Solusod could make Shadow mysterious again.
Matthew Mercer could take Humphrey, Griffith & Thornton's perfomances & get the balance just right between them.
Richard Epcar can bring a gruffer sound for when Shadow gets angry.
Troy Baker captures the smug & competitive demeanor perfectly.
Travis Willingham would give us a more refined voice that's not overly forced.
& Roger Craig Smith would get to use a whole lot of range & completely different from Sonic.

Is there anything else I should add?

Okay, my review of these actors:

I don't care what anyone says, David Humphrey made a great shadow. out of all the actors, he actually gave shadow EMOTIONS. learn that Kirk.

Jason did alright, but he could have been better if it weren't for how shadow was in the games. his character development just made him darker and darker.

Kirk, OH HOLY CRAP. i can't describe it, but it's pretty bad. he makes shadow sound evil, while overall he's not doing anything evil. it's misplaced, and confusing.

David is the best, with Jason at a very close, down to the inch second place. Kirk is miles away.

@Mephilesthelight358 In short, the original Adventure cast was replaced by the 4Kids cast for consistency with Sonic X, and then the now-current cast took over so that they don't have to fly all the way over to NY for recording. As a whole, SEGA is not directly responsible for either cast changes.

I like David Humphrey, but the voice was a little too monotone in Sonic Adventure 2. He got better in Sonic Heroes.
I really liked Jason Griffith's Shadow, because he was able to put a little more thoughtfulness into Shadow's character around Sonic 06. I just wish they played more sound clips from 06 for the demo instead of Shadow the Hedgehog. One last note about Griffith, though: There were parts that I found were really great, such as when Shadow's voice would increase in volume, almost surprising me (Sonic 06: "DON'T TOUCH THAT.")
Kirk Thornton will fill in eventually, but he's done pretty well starting off. My only issue was "YOU'VE GOT DISSANICK."

After listening to these some more, I'm going to go with David. He has a cool voice, great acting, and even had a little attitude. I didn't really notice it that much when I first played Heroes, but he even had a slight British accent, which is quite a nice touch. Definitely one of the standouts from the original voice cast of the Sonic series of video games.

Kirk sounded too old and monotone, but to be fair, he's hardly gotten much to work with thus far. I'm sure that he'd improve over time though.

Jason is a lot better as Shadow than he is as either Sonic or Jet, but his performances were still rather lacking, especially in the earlier games. In Sonic X, he would easily slip into his Sonic voice, he was even worse in Shadow the Hedgehog, where it's blatantly obvious that they (4Kids) tried to make him as bad@$$ as possible (but miserably failing to do so), and I have to admit that, in Sonic 06, he's little more than a sad emo. Of course, that all may have more to do with the poor writing/direction of those aforementioned TMGs, though it's still apparent that Jason wasn't really trying hard enough, even if he significantly improved in later games.

Overall, David is my favorite, but Kirk and Jason aren't too far behind.

I still think Kirk Thornton was a brilliant casting choice for Shadow. His performance in Free Riders reminds me of Asimov from Cowboy Bebop. I just think he needs more lines and better direction, then he could easily surpass David Humphrey. In my opinion, the only questionable line from Kirk was "you gawt dis sanic" in Sonic Generations.

Huh. I went with Kirk Thornton, but I'll change my vote to David Humphrey I'm not a big fan of Humphrey's performance in SA2, but he grew on me in Heroes. If you look at Humphrey's overall performance as Shadow, he has the widest range of emotions to work with. He doesn't sound quiet and deadpan all the time, which is why I don't like Jason Griffith's take on the character. Thornton reminds me of Humphrey, for some reason. Can't place my finger on it. Again, once he gets more material to work with, he could become my favorite.

David is my favorite. He sounds really natural and fitting for Shadow, not to mention he earns brownie points for that cool British accent he'd slip into so often in the games.

I can see why Jason has so many fans. Unlike most (95%) of the 4kids cast, Jason's voice actually fit the character he was playing. My peave with him is that his acting was very much so "Christian Bale Batman-ish" (forced, unintentionally funny, screams "I have lung cancer"). Overall he was ok. Generic and not very memorable, but ok.

I can't really give a fair opinion on Kirk because I haven't heard that much from him. Everyone sucks on their 1st try in thier roles so I can't judge his Trent Lane-like performance in Sonic Free Riders. He had only one line in Generations so I really can't judge that. I need to hear him in more games to tell if he's good, ok, or just bad.
said at 1:13 AM on Tue Sep 18 2012
David does a decent Shadow voice as it does have that dark feel. One problem I have with him is that some of his lines felt a bit forced, I hope that was the case of bad directing since Sega is notorious for its bad voice acting in their fourth generation era.

Unlike his Sonic voice, Jason's Shadow was excellent from the start. He really sounds like a badass and gives out that anti-hero feel. While it is debatable if he is a good Sonic voice actor or not, he is definitely Shadow material and my own personal favorite.

Kirk I feel is underrated, while I do think his voice as Shadow is a bit too smug, I do feel that he has the best range of emotion for Shadow. I feel that given time, he would become a better Shadow voice actor and possibly match Jason's performance, he just needs more guidance. He is definitely not a bad VO though as shown with his Orbot performance.

Honestly, I don't like any of these voices... David Humphrey had the best voice and he's the voice I think of when I think Shadow the Hedgehog, but his acting was amazingly wooden. Still, he did sound very cool and left a lasting impression.

Jason Griffith is definitely an improvement in acting, but not by a large amount and it still felt stilted in places. I also don't like how Shadow went from arrogant yet serious to extremely troubled and insecure, but that was a fault of the writing rather than Jason Griffith's personal take on the character, I believe.

Kirk Thornton is a great actor, but I think he's miscast here; his voice is much too cocky and his arrogance feels too "fashionable", for lack of a better term, when he should sound darker. His acting is the most believable, though, even if it is a poorer match for the character.

Overall, I don't really feel like any of them are very good, but I would give my vote, by a small margin, to Kirk Thornton for sounding natural, at least, followed by David Humphrey for getting the voice down about perfectly.

Wow this was a long post for me.

Kirk Thornton for me; Humphrey and Griffith aren't necessarily bad, but Thornton, I feel, gives a much more natural performance for the character. He sounds cocky, but not too evil or dark. I hope he gets the chance to shine with the character in a future Sonic game.

Humphrey would be my second choice, as his version was also natural, but he kinda got a little hammy at times, particularly in Sonic Heroes (though, that may be more the fault of the director). Griffith, while he improved during his time as Sonic, his Shadow always seemed forced and went TOO dark for my taste.

David Humphrey - I'm not saying he's bad, but he's trying WAY too hard to sound epic.
Jason Griffith - Jason's Shadow had the most awesomely stupid lines in the entire series. But in all seriousness, I think he's good; he got a lot better after Sonic X.
Kirk Thornton - Um... I'm still not sure what to say, except for: "YOU'VE GOT THIS SONIC!!!"

No offense, but the fact that Shadow got a new voice (to me at least) makes no sense. According to what SEGA's been saying, Shadow never ages. Therefore, he shouldn't have this new voice. ...But that's just me.

@YamiFangirlQueen In all fairness, Shadow's game was intended for an older audience. Admittedly, they tried way too hard and made it more cheesy than anything, but I wouldn't call it a kids' game.

Why is everyone acting resistant against Kirk Thornton??? He's easily the best Shadow. He's obviously the most skilled when it comes to acting, and his voice actually sounds NATURAL. Not like he's trying to purpose make himself sound breathy.

Jason was pretty good and David was bad at acting. People really need to stop putting the Sonic Adventure cast on a pedestal. Sure, they're nostalgic and a lot of us grew up with them. But, most of them were bad at acting, to be quite honest!
said at 9:47 PM on Mon Feb 20 2012

To be fair, some of the original cast didn't have much experience in voice acting for video games (at least compared to the new cast). Some of them only did stage work or singing prior to voicing in the Sonic games. Also the voice directors sometimes had an impact on how the actors sounded behind the mic. I'm not saying you're wrong, as I do partly agree with you, but there are reasons on why they may have sounded like that.
said at 1:20 PM on Sat Jan 28 2012
It really depends on how you think Shadow should sound like, I mean he is kind of a hard character to voice in my opinion.

They may not all be perfect, but I vote for Jason Griffith: he may have started dodgy but got good after a while, and I always though he was more fitting.

David Humphrey was OK, he did sound a bit smug and arrogant but he was good in Sonic heroes.

When I heard Kirk Thornton as Shadow I was like "What the hell?!" but he just needs to get used to this role in my opinion.

My top three of Shadow's voice actors are pretty much like many other people but some of these comments below got me thinking a lil here:

1) Jason- He sounds the best. But as some of you guys said, unlike David, he lacks some emotion or inner-Shadow-ness. I only like him better because he sounds most like Shadow.

2) David- As for David, I'll never change my mind on how brilliant Shadow's voice is with that british accent. It's something noone can forget! To me, it suits the hedgehog just fine.

3) Kirk- Like many others would say, Kirl is kinda the worst of all three. But I definitely agree that since he's newer at this voice acting role, he many not be so good until he gets more experience. He just needs practice!

P.S. I'm surprised at the username availability.

I like Thorton the most, and I know saying this will make people mad but I feel David and Jason are equally bad. I don't feel they fit SHadow that well and lacked a certain Anti-hero feel. Plus from David's clip I hear how bad his acting is and while I haven't heard Jason in everything as Shadow I felt his acting was better then David.

Thorton just felt like an anti-hero and I could tell he could act circles around the other to and with I know about Kirk, he can bring out more depth then either of the other two.
So Kirk in a clear first and Jason and David in a tied second place.

 3 Shout Outs!
I'll do a little top 3 here:

1. David Humphrey- Personally I don't think these clips did him justice, he really got better at acting the role out toward the end.

2. Kirk Thornton- I'll put him at number 2 because he has the potential to be the best Shadow. Right now he feels like he's kinda finding the character, and since Shadow's appearences in these games have been limited, and even the ones where he's in there, he's usually on the side, and has no purpose for being there. I trully feel that one's Kirk Thornton is given the opprotunity to get Shadow when he's at the center of things, and he's really given Shadow's deeper personality to work with that he'll nail it like nobody has, he's an amazing voice actor, but sadly he has yet to have that opprotunity. So Humphrey get's my vote, but I have the feeling I'm gonna change it someday.

3. Jason Griffith- Now, a lot of people will definatetly disagree with me here, but Jason Griffith sucked, and here's why: While, I must concede he did perfect the voice for Shadow, much like he did for Sonic, he had little to no acting ability whatsoever. This clip they use are his highlights, but if any of you remember quotes like "Black Doom, you're evil plan ends here, and it ends now!" or "I am Shadow the Hedgehog, and I am the Most Powerful Hedgehog in the Universe, this is who I am!" you'll know what I mean. Fact is, Griffith had a 78 episode anime series, a spin-off game where Shadow was the main character, a game where he had is own story mode, and a bunch of token appearences to nail Shadow, but he was only sufficient at acting Shadow's surface, never his inner emotions. Kirk Thornton has only had token appearences, if he had those opprotunities I bet he'd be number 1 hands down.

David Humphrey: He's my favorite Shadow voice because his voice is very unique and something that was well put together. He captures Shadow's emotion, feelings, and sounds like he's enjoying voicing the character

Jason Griffith: I find his Shadow's voice a little lazy and uninteresting and when he's talking it's like there's no emotion being put into the voice; It's not that he sounds emo, it just sounds boring. He also sounds like he is forcing himself to yell and it would slip into his Sonic voice during his early performance, but he got a little better over time like Sonic. Even though he is not perfect, he was passable.

Kirk Thornton: Though he is the weakest of the two voices, I think he has the potential to be the best Shadow voice out of the two, I can't wait to hear his performance in Generations.

David wasn't too bad, he did a good job in SA2 besides a few times where he sounded fake. I really didn't care for his performance in Heroes though....
I really don't care for Kirks Shadow whatsoever, but he does a great Orbot. He'll probably will get around David's range sometime in the future. I really can't image him ever saying "Chaos Control!".

Shadow the Hedgehog

1. Jason Griffith (King of Hedgehogs)
To those of you who say that he sounds like an emo Sonic, I'll say this once: HE'S LIKE A MIRROR REFLECTION OF SONIC!! It would make sense for Sonic and Shadow to sound alike! Plus, you already know this: They share a voice actor! What'd you expect Shadow to sound like? Darth Vader?! I mean, Vegeta and Piccolo share a voice actor and they sound almost EXACTLY alike! And I've never heard ANYONE complaining about that!! And FYI, people are NOT voting for Griffith out of pity, or going with the crowd! That just means that they're desperate! That's right! They're NOT giving him "pity votes"! They like Griffith! So, let them!

2. David Humphrey
He was okay as Shadow. He expressed his dark persona, but what I didn't like about his voice, though, is that he sounds like he's constantly flirting with other characters unintentionally... That, and he sounds like he's playing around EVERY SINGLE SECOND!! Like he's the freaking Joker! But, overall, he was okay...

3. Kirk Thornton
I'll give him time to improve, but he just sounds AWFUL!! Just plain AWFUL!! He sounds like a potential rapist, trying not to speak British. To me, he's just imitating Frank Frankson's voice for Specter, from the Ape Escape series! But, like I said, I'll give him time...

@TheUltimatePhantom1 Okay, your argument in Jason's defense is SO illogical that I don't even know where to begin.

1) Vegeta and Piccolo may share a VA, but they sound totally different.
2) There ARE people who complain about the FUNi dub of DBZ.
3) Most 4Kids fans haven't gotten over the change of cast, hence why Griffith is in the lead.

There's more things I could point out, but those are the most important.
said at 6:48 PM on Fri May 8 2015
@pokemastanumba1 Okay, let's review all of the facts:

1. The earlier dub of DBZ.. Try watching it... And besides that, look at a voice actor like Liam O'Brien, who recycles the same type of voice (Just look at Gaara and Kain Highwind).. Nobody complained about that from what I've seen.. So, complaining about it here is an invalid reason to do so..

2. 9.8% of DBZ fans have complained about that, while others don't seem to mind, so you're right on that, but the same people who were perfectly fine with that are complaining about the same thing here, which I simply detest..

3. Really? Because I came here in 09, and Griffith was already catching up to Drummond in the polls.. And the funny part? Sonic and the Black Knight wasn't even out at that time! So, you tell me I'm the one comment-stalking..

Now, for you're absolutely redundant defusion of my comment:

1. If my comment was so deterring, why reply?

2. You say it's illogical, and you reply with the same lack of logic, or sense of what I was getting at? And I'm the illogical one?

3. There are many other comments out there, whose are much more "rage-y" than mine, and you set your target on mine?

There are many more things I can list, but those are the most obvious.

To me, I personally like both David and Kirk. Humphrey started off Shadow as a likeable character (to which Shadow got pretty dull to me after Heroes, whereas makes me wonder: if he is meant to be the ultimate life-form as he claims, why would Sega make the opportunity to have him wield weapons and ride on transportation?) and his emotion is actually presented out well... In fact, I never actually got tired of hearing that voice at all.

As for Kirk, I like the presentation of him combining both of David and Jason's tones together, to make a pretty nice replacement for the latter... There is one problem: Thornton can sound a little too much like Kisame, and the gritty tone is nice and all, but some improvement can be looked forward to, maybe?

As for Jason "Hi! I'm Jason Griffith!" Griffith, I won't say he's terrible or miscast at all, or even emo in this case (if you fangirls wanna jump on me like the parasites you are), but with the actor previously voicing Sonic, Jet, and Shadow, it sounds a bit strained at times, making me feel uninterested.

And as for the rest of you who think Shadow may sound a bit dumb and pathetic with whoever was typecasted, I just wanna say that Shadow is pretty much ageless, being that it wouldn't matter if he sounded old or young. Appearance-wise, he's about Sonic's age, but in reality, he is WAY older than that, according to my theory.

Overall, I vote for David Humphrey, but if it's anyone who is a legend, credit goes to the all-seeing Koji Yusa!

@ShadowFanGirl Tsk tsk, you fangirls/boys are too easy to judge, honestly. In fact, if you think anthropomorphic characters are all "sexy" because of their voice, then that's fine... But did I ever forgot to mention that these characters are 2D!? {facepalm} The majority of this world today is full of hypocritical people, even myself. Pretty easy to figure out you're not so much of a franchise fan when your name is "ShadowFanGirl".

Me personally, while I dislike Sonic 06 and Sonic Genesis to the fullest, I will still think of them as... Well, 'Sonic'. Shadow the Hedgehog, while atrocious, isn't totally bad, and the concept looks like it would've fit as an anime. If you diluted fangirls (boys also) are here being all like, "KAWAII DESU~" or "Sonamy forever!", it's kinda hard to take that seriously unless if it was a personal thought.

Overall, don't expect me hating whatsoever... I just feel sick of this kind of stuff happening. But hey, we can't like all the same stuff, as we'd be lifeless, then.

I've always wondered why do some fans think Shadow is emo?

Shadow was never emo except in one uncanon ending in his game I say the reason he's being labeled as Emo because most people don't even know what the word actually means and just brand to use the word with no specific reason what is up with that? :P
said at 11:55 PM on Fri Jul 8 2011
@Truesonic thats a very good question.
Shadow has been depressed mainly because he watched his best friend murdered. He never once wanted to kill himself except in that one ending, everywhere else he has never been emo.

Exactly what you've just said is all true :) I just don't like when people refer to him as 'Emo' whereas like you said before he never was except one time which was uncanon....Shadow is a dark, cool and mysterious character at least that's what I think wouldn't it be weird seeing him happy or loud all the time O_o
said at 11:21 PM on Tue Jul 12 2011

I can't even imagine him with that personality. I dislike it when people complain about Shadow being too silent or "whispering". Shadow is a serious character and should not be cocky. I like it that he is unemotional and smug.
said at 3:14 PM on Tue Jul 19 2011

said at 9:17 AM on Tue Jul 26 2011

I don't like that ether... It's a reaction of fans of the previous voice actor in order to find a way to insult the one afterward. It happens all the time and everywhere in voice acting. Your right about that people need a specific reason instead of a fake reason. But what can we do... :

1 David Humphrey
2 Kirk
3 Jason

David is the best for one, he is the original actor for him. He made Shadow, Shadow! Not to mention he is the only one who actually gave Shadow emotion other than emo-ness. He expressed joy, sly, mad, dark, haughty, ect in Shadow by the mastery of his voice.
David Humphrey ALWAYS FTW.

Second Kirk is a mix between David and Jason.
Kirk adds more emotion to Shadow than just "i dont know who i am but i will do this and this, why am i always mad" like Jason did.
He has more of a snake like-ness to this with this voice but at least it adds more than one mono tone. And give him time, he will fit into Shadow in no time.

Jason in my opinion sucks the most, first of all since he does both Sonic and Shadow, if Shadow is too high it is Sonic, if Sonic is too dark it is Shadow. I hate that! Not to mention Jason gave no emotion to Shadow, only, "why do i hate myself, who am i, why do i hate the world". Talk about dumming down the bar that was set so high for Shadow with David. I hate that Jason didnt do so well with expressing Shadow.

Final Verdict
David will always be my fav. I curse the day the fan-ficed Sonic X was made, that changed the best Sonic voice cast to ever be chosen. Not to mention the stupidity that Sonic X is, it is sooo fake/cheap...

RIP David and Ryan
You were the best!

As a side note, i dont go with popular vote, i stay with what i believe is right, most ppl ,move with the croud but who knows.

That is how i feel with Jason, even though he sucked and lacked in many areas of expanding his voice areas, everyone liked him just because the main population liked him.
and i hate that
said at 9:25 AM on Sat Jul 9 2011

I completely agree with that statement. While I don't dislike Jason's performances, he rarely was the best voice for any of the characters he did. For Sonic, I like Roger and Ryan better, and I like David and Kirk more for Shadow, and I definitely didn't like Jason's Jet voice very much. I feel the reason Jason is winning in popularity is either out of pity that he lost the job or because some Sonic fans like him for nostalgic purposes. I know this doesn't apply to everyone that likes Jason the best, but I'm sure there are some fans that do think this way.

Here's my list:

1. David Humphrey

He's my favorite Shadow voice by far. David gave Shadow a very unique tone to it. To me, he was a very good driving force for Shadow's character. Compared to many of the actors in SA2, David was one of the better voices and managed to provide decent acting in some scenes, while sounding epic in other scenes. There were a few instances where his projection could've been improved, in both SA2 and Sonic Heroes, but overall, he did good for the role.

2. Kirk Thornton

I like how Kirk kinda sounds similar to David. However, the way he talks in that voice is kinda mixed with me. He sounds like he extends certain syllables longer then he needed to. I'd like to hear him talk a bit faster too, since he sounds a bit retrained when talking in his Shadow voice. But I'm willing to hear him in more games before I completely judge him. I think he has good potential.

3. Jason Griffith

Even though I rank Jason last on this list, that doesn't mean I think he's bad. He actually did a decent job as Shadow, just in a different way than how David and Kirk do theirs. He gives Shadow a more mellow and unenthusiastic type of voice. This can be a good thing, but can also have a few consequences. Jason didn't emote very much as Shadow, and when he did, he sometimes sounded a bit awkward. I remember him sounding like Sonic when he shouted a line in Sonic X. Not to mention, he has a whispering-like hiss when he speaks, and while that may work for some, it doesn't really do Shadow enough justice if you ask me. With all due respect though, Jason did pretty good as Shadow.

None of these actors were bad voices for Shadow. All had a few flaws in certain areas. It's mainly a matter of preference of who someone likes more.

I don't have any preference between the first two. David Humphrey was just awesome in Sonic Adventure 2, making Shadow sound really evil, and it was a nice touch how he toned down the voice a bit in Sonic Heroes, reflecting Shadow's amnesia. Another thing I liked about his Shadow was the slight English accent. The flaw was that sometimes, he could sound a bit cheesy. Jason Griffith's is a bit smoother, more suave, and distinct from his Sonic (it took me until very recently to notice the similarities in the voices). The flaw? Sounds a bit generic, while David's was more unique. Kirk Thornton is also pretty good, but I prefer the other two.

@NCZ Following up, there's another bit I'd like to add. Jason Griffith's Shadow had another flaw; there wasn't very much acting. Instead of acting, his Shadow just sort of raised his voice. I didn't notice in Shadow the Hedgehog or other such games, since Shadow mellowed out (and there, it arguably worked), but it's quite noticeable in Sonic X, where Shadow sounds monotone most of the time.

Anyway, my final opinion is that David Humphrey is my favourite Shadow, but it is very close.

1) David Humphrey
2) Jason Anthony Griffith
3) Kirk Thornton

David Humphrey has my #1 vote because his voice had the most texture and character. Jason made him sound not bad but somewhat bland. No complaints about Kirk just yet.

@666Halen Kirk's is grainy.

@myopinion1 Grainy? Well it does sound kind of creepy, but in some wierd way that fits Shadow. Kirk can't top David or Jason but for me he passes. I will admit that it sounds kind of dry but it isn't that bad.

I still ike David since that was the era when Shadow was starting to become kick ass. Griffith was great as well but the lines and setup for Shadow in late rgames made him sound all emo. which would bother me. Jason's voice was fine , the lines kinda suck and the plot with Shadow in some of the other games were weird to say the least. Kirk umm he just started so I'm gonna leave room for improvement and I am hoping he will do fine.

Jason Griffith was the better and much more fitting Shadow voice for me he gave Shadow a strong bold voice but slyer and slow almost like a whisper he used the same tone as Humphrey but he was more serious and threatening in few games He was more realistic the voice connected to the character instantly like they were sort of related somehow

He also made Shadow sound more gruffer and louder in the last few games which featured the 4kids Cast I think he did well in all games but the top three games he did best was....Rivals 2, Black Knight as Lancelot and Shadow The Hedgehog (Game) I was also amazed how he could change his voice from the sarcastic, kind, serious mood he gives Sonic to a dark, deeper and sly mood to a cocky and annoying mood to Jet XD I think he fits the role for all three characters He definately goes first place in my list :) He also gave Shadow strong emotion

David Humphrey was actually good not bad at all He gave the silent tone which Jason did later then, he gave Shadow all different kinds of emotions, he sounded more sinister and evil but kind too the thing David lacked was in some parts and cutscenes he overused the sly voice a bit too much and some lines would sound a bit too weak and huffy overall He did an okay job but comes second I think Griffith is better though His best perfomrance I would say is SA2 and some quotes are good in Heroes but that had awful dialogue O_o

I also agree with Yo on the Emo thing yeah it's getting a bit too cliche and annoying to keep using that as a reason why you don't each voice actor was good for Shadow...seriously you can't keep saying that all the time think deeply about it ask yourselves some questions Why did you not like the voice actor?
Was it something Jason did that David didn't or was it something David did what Jason didn't ask yourselves these and try and have a more sensible or reasonable awnser or just do the asy way but don't try to annoy others who are fans of other voice actors you don't like Everyone is entitled to their opinion but the fighting and Harsh attacks on the voice actor have to stop!

Kirk Thornton...uh I'm gonna leave him out on this one he has captured the tone yes but I feel he is missing a few elements from what the others did maybe to improve he could be a bit more vertasile, bring a bit more what Jason had, bring more what David had or combine all those factors and elements or just try to work harder on the voice

I will leave him out because it takes time to crack on the voice

But for now Jason Griffith will always be my Shadow voice to me as well as Sonic and Jet :)

My comparison of the three...

Humphrey: I will credit him that he has the right tone (silky and low), but he seems to be enjoying the role a little TOO much. I personally see him holding back a laugh in each line.

Griffith: Great. He has the tone that Humphrey has, only he's taking himself a tad more seriously and isn't quite as overly-dramatic about it.

Thornton: Again, he has the silky kind of voice he used with Saix, but he makes Shadow sound a tad too old and dry. No offense to Thornton, he is a good voice actor.

I, personally would have gone with Crispin Freeman, Johnny Yong Bosch, and (if all else fails) Steven Jay Blum. Don't tell me that Blum as Shadow is a bad idea!

David seemed to make Shadow sound slightly English as well. That's one of the things I liked about him.

Jason made Shadow dark and myserious but deep down kind and caring inside and the post amnesia in the game (Shadow The hedgehog) fitted perfectly he gave Shadow emotion and a lot of power He was the Best Shadow voice in my opinion he also put his dark sinister side into him and that's what made Shadow more special and interesting inside He was good in all games

David was ehhh at sometimes he was listenable but mostly Ehhh....I'll leave it at that

I'm not really into Shadow's new voice sounds a lot different from Griffith but similar to David but we will see how it goes in future games...

Kirk thornton's been playing the serious lone wolf archetype characters for years now, but no major complaints about it until he voices Shadow. Ah well

Being the fanboy I am, I always thought he'd make a good shadow, and I like what I've heard so he gets my vote

Kirk Thornton added. He's pretty good. And it amuses me that Shadow now has the same voice actor as Don Patch.

@satoshi I agree David was too forced Jason makes shadow sound better more darker and a bit evil XD....david was really trying but it was a bit too much XD he tried too hard

I don't like either. A lot of David Humphrey's delivery felt too forced and felt really awkward and unnatural. It wasn't terrible just a mediocre performance in general. Griffith really doesn't emote to much and whispers a lot, but it kinda works and isn't as painful to listen to so I guess hes OKAY.

DAVID HUMPHREY FTW. Jason Anthony Griffith was HORRIBLE as Shadow! David put so much emotion into his performance. Jason made him sound annoying and one sided.
