Espio the Chameleon

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Espio the Chameleon with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Sonic the Hedgehog

Espio is a member of Team Chaotix along with Vector the Crocodile and Charmy Bee. He is a stealthy, purple ninja and one of the few silent, serious characters in the Sonic series. It was commonly believed that Marc Biagi voiced Espio in Sonic Heroes. This has since been proven false; Biagi voiced Vector.

This is probably the only time I clearly favor one of the Sonic X voices. While Bill Corkery had a satisfactory take on the character and played his coolness well, he also sounded aggressive and on edge. David Wills' portrayal nailed the character, sounding cool and relaxed but still capable of emoting (with what little emotion Espio has, anyway). I like Troy Baker for the same reasons, and I hope he gets more to work with in the future. While they are all good, my vote goes to David.

@HienFan Been looking through Heroes, again it seems like Bill was very good in the cutscene(certainly what David Wills inspired his voice from) but a lot of his ingame lines sounds almost like an old man

My opinion on Espio's VAs:

3. Troy Baker - I don't know, this voice doesn't sound very ninja-like to me. It's pretty generic for Espio and it makes him sound little light-hearted in places. Decent acting though.

2. Bill Corkery - I actually don't mind this voice. Sure it can be inconsistent at times but I like the tough attitude he gave Espio whilst making sound mysterious and ninja-like. The acting was a little forced with some lines but overall I kinda like this voice.

1. David Wills - This voice I feel took Corkery's performance and refined it more. David gives a much better balance of both tough and mysterious plus more ninja-like. The acting can be a little wooden but overall this was probably the best voice for Espio.

I'm going with David Wills on this one, actually: his soft, quiet ninja like voice really fit the role well to me. He was definitely one of the standouts from the mostly poor Sonic X & 2005-2010 Sonic game voice cast.

Troy Baker lacked consistency in his performance: I thought he was fine in Colors, but in Generations he did this incredibly forced preacher type voice, and it didn't work at all.

Bill Corkery lacks even more consistency than Troy Baker did: he goes from really gruff and deep to sounding intelligent and suave, all across the board. Having said that, he was alright when he adopted the latter pitched, and he's certainly not the weakest Espio.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Matt Mercer is the weakest of the group from what I listened to of his performance in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games version of the character. His "ONWARD" reminds me of some bully at a school's voice.
said at 7:23 PM on Tue May 9 2017

I think Matt did the absolute best he could with the very little he had to work with, to be honest.
said at 8:30 AM on Thu May 11 2017
I'm just amazed how forced he sounds in the part, honestly: Matthew Mercer is a great voice actor, but I feel like the direction wasn't on his side here- it could very well be the lack of material, but I felt he could do better here.
said at 6:20 PM on Thu May 11 2017

I do agree about that, and I was mostly just considering the likely circumstances of what he was given, given Matt's never one to phone it in really and is a very talented actor.

I agree that the direction was likely part of the issue, which is what I was thinking of, really. Given the circumstances, I'm pretty convinced most of the direction he was given was to basically "mimic Troy Baker", given he was likely hired to be a duplicate voice for Troy (Matt himself has a long history of being hired to voice match Troy Baker). I'm pretty sure aside from the lack of material, he was likely pretty much only called in to do an impression of Troy's take on Espio and only did pretty much that: copycat Troy.

That said, I'm sure he could be better if he were to hypothetically be cast as Espio again in a future appearance, and if he's given more material and more time to really make the role his own, then he could be quite solid. Especially since Matt's actually quite good at the cool, calm roles with his voice. But given he had so little to work with as of yet, I'd say he's yet to realize any of his full potential as Espio, especially since he does have a voice that can actually work quite well for him.

Troy Baker's my favorite. His voice sample from Sonic Colors doesn't do him justice; in Generations, he shows off a REALLY cool voice that channels Crispin Freeman in an effective way for this cautious ninja. David Willis has a solid voice, but it doesn't have a whole lot of personality, and he tended to be a bit quieter than he needed to be. Bill Corkery lacked any kind of direction in his performance, and this lost him several points in my book.

I agree that Matt Mercer's a great actor, but I think an actor or actresses' performance in an individual role really depends on how good the voice director is, and how good the dialogue as well as material in general they're given to work with, is as well. There are great actors and actresses who can still give poor performances due to inept vocal direction or bad dialogue etc. to work with, so to speak.
said at 12:48 PM on Sat Oct 15 2016
@WrightWay I haven't played anything Sonic in ages, but Jack Fletcher is a phenomenal director.

said at 1:32 PM on Sat Oct 15 2016
@WrightWay I'll have to check out a playthrough or something. Because this is a character that Mercer should've NAILED honestly. Although not having much dialogue to work with was probably a factor as you said...

2. David Wills. sounds like shadow when voiced by jason Griffith. and i love it! he sound like a badass and a ninja when he voices espio and did great the most in Sonic X and should really be famous.

Who doesn't like Bill Corkery while David Willis was good and while I didn't think to much of baker's espio bill was the best expectantly his line "Died a lonely death"
said at 2:43 PM on Tue Mar 24 2015
1. Troy Baker. It actually shocks me that so many here aren't fans of him... He sounds beautiful and badass at the same time, and I love it. He has David's voice, but so much more emotion. What I especially like is that his delivery is so genuine, it ends up being funny. "Beware, for I have looked into the soul of our enemy, and I saw only darkness." "Uhhhh...yeeeahhhh."

2. David Wills. He played Espio like Jason Griffith's Shadow: cold and emotionless. However in Sonic X, he knew how to do comic delivery, so he could do more. He changed what Espio sounded like from what Corkery did, and that's a huge plus that he didn't try to sound like him.

3. Bill Corkery. Ehhhhh. It's cool that he interacts with Espio fans on Youtube, but I just don't think he was very good. He sounds way too deep, and... I dunno. Maybe he's just trying too hard?

David Wills is easily the best Espio voice in my opinion. Perfect voice for the character. He makes Epsio sound very cool, mature, calm and collected which really fits his ninja like personality. He's also much more relaxed and gives a very natural and soothing delivery which was great to hear. I think he was very underated as Espio and it's a damn shame we didn't more of him in this role which was due to Espio's infrequent appearances throughout the series when the 4Kids voice actors were still involved in the Sonic series. I aboslutely loved his performances in Sonic X, Shadow The Hedgehog and Rivals 2, easily one of the best Sonic voice actors and I was personally very sad to see him go.

Bill Corkery in Heroes made Espio sound way too gruff and over the top. At times, he sounds okay but most of the time he sounded very harsh and angry and I don't know if it was intentional but it doesn't come across very well. He was very inconsistent on the tone of his voice as it keeps going from one tone to another at a strange pace which didn't mesh very well. It was ridiculously over the top and rather aggressive. It's like he was trying too hard when projecting dialogue or geenrally speaking in the character's voice.

Troy Baker sounds decent in the DS version of Colors however his performance in Generations was very unfitting and odd. It really doesn't fit the character. The type of tone that he gave Espio in that performance just didn't work for me, it sounded rather odd and strange which didn't suit Espio very well. I felt like that type of voice belonged to a non Sonic character. This is only based on his performance in Sonic Generations though, considering he hasn't been given much material like many of the current cast and I doubt we will hear much of him anytime soon. So overall, he's decent in Colors but he gives a very unfitting and out of character performance in Generations which leaves me having very uncertain feelings for him as Espio. Probably would have been better suited for another character.

1) David Wills
2) Troy Baker (Colors DS)
3) Bill Corkery
4) Troy Baker (Generations)

#3: Bill Corkery: it's a good start for the voice acting for him and the Chaotix in general, but here is my honest opinion, his voice is a bit too gruff and somewhat harsh, and more like samurai than ninja, but it was a really good start. Bill did an ok job.

#2: David Wills: i personally think that he was probably the best 4kids voice actor for the anime show Sonic X. he sounds more calm and organized, but there were some downsides: sometimes, the effort is rather silly than serious and he makes Espio sound slightly deluded, but the silliness is supposed to be there, otherwise, well done, David.

#1: Troy Baker: ok the only reason as to why im choosing Troy as my #1 is because, you know, he's been a voice actor of a ninja before...and because hes kinda cute (im a girl, ok?), but otherwise, here's what i personally think: Troy makes Espio sound a bit more calm with some adjusted ninja and a "fitting" deep voice for his young age. "This is what you get when you have a (fairly) young voice actor: the character's voice sounds more "young". it's a bit like that with Bill Corkery: the older the voice actor is (i think he's somewhat old), the "older the character's voice will sound. anyway, i'd say Troy is my favorite voice for Espio because i think he makes Espio "Espio", you know, the quiet, yet serious ninja chameleon of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. otherwise, all 3 voice actors did a good job...i really do...well done...

2-: David Willis: A very good take on Espio, and a major step up from Bill. He really made the character sound cool, calm, and collected.
3-: Bill Corkery: He did a little better than in the clip, but good god was he really inconsistent. He didn't do too bad, but he made Espio sound way too gruff and angry at points.

Bill Corkery: IN-CON-SISTECYYYY!!!!!!!! Yes, I'm probably the only one to notice that he's inconsistent with his voice. It's hard to explain, but I do notice it. It's also too thick for me. This is technically the worst voice for espio.

*looks back at tails and charmy*

David Wills: Much more consistent. This is less menacing and deep than Bill. Much better.

Troy Baker: .....OH.....MY......GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ahem, THIS THE BEST VOICE ACTOR IN THE ENTIRE SONIC FRANCISE!!!!! He gives Espio the deepest, calmest, perfect ninja voice that fits PERFECTLY!!!!! When I first heard him in Generations, I was mind blown. WHO KNEW SOMEONE COULD SOUND THAT DEEP?!?!?! Bill Corkery: Bill is way to gruff for me. When I hear his voice, I don't picture a ninja.

David Willis: One of the best 4kids voices. He toned down the gruffness of Bill, and has the mysterious, silent personality of Troy. David earns my vote.

Troy Baker: He's a damn good replacement for David, in my opinion. To be honest, I find him more fitting than David, as he sounds the most ninja like, but like a lot of the new cast, he needs more lines before I can fully judge him.

@TheTrueYuma I say over the top because he's incredibly stoic and a lot of his lines are ninja cliches. Idk, I just appreciate Troy's subtlety. It counteracts the craziness of Vector and Charmy. Bill's tone was all over the place from aggressive, to quiet, to normal. It was pretty jarring to hear him talk not to mention inconsistent.

David is quite a paradox, while he does sound very emotionless, at the same time you can hear his emotion pretty well. While it may sound like a bad thing at first, it allows him to have a really fluid performance and makes it an excellent take on our favorite ninja chameleon.

Troy sounds mighty zen, which is also a good thing. He really gives Espio a spiritual spin and it allows him to have a very calm performance. While I think David is better overall, I do think Troy is a worthy successor to Espio.

#1 Troy Baker
Troy is VERY stereotypical for this kind of character, but hey, it works! And yes I say it works very well. I knew that he already had potential as demonstrated in Colors; Generations is where he truly begins to shine. While his voice would fit Shadow as well, I think it brings out Espio's true character of a cool, calm, and collected ninja.

#2 David Wills
Very similar to Troy, and definitely one of the best 4Kids voices. But he sounds more generic, and quite a bit deeper than Troy, setting me off a bit. It worked perfectly in Shadow the Hedgehog, but probably not as much if it was in another, more kiddy (no pun intended) Sonic game.

#3 Bill Corkery
This is where it's very much unanimous; while Bill has an okay voice, it does NOT fit Espio at all. He sounded way too gruff and more "samurai" as opposed to "ninja" much like Kyle Hebert as Ryu.

@SonicRyan1992 NO!! Sorry, it's just that it wouldn't fit for knuckles. I thought Scott Dreier would be too deep for Knuckles, but Troy Baker, oooooOOOHHHHH boy.

I think I'd go with David Wills because I've heard his voice for Espio so many times since 2008 when I was 13 and 14 years old.

When you say this is the first time you clearly favour One Of The Sonic X (4Kids) Voices didn't you also favour Pete Capella as Silver? O.o

@Truesonic Yeah, I did. Though that time, it was pretty close because I also liked Quinton Flynn, so I had to put some more thought into my opinion. Here, I knew that for sure David is the best.

1. Bill Corkery - he seemed to give Espio the "lethal, careful ninja" sound best, in my opinion.
2. Troy Baker - his voice was similar to Bill Corkery's, though more casual.
3. David Wills - very similar to Troy Baker's.

Bill Corkery clip updated!

Good thinking. Bill Corkery's initial clip wasn't all that great in portraying what his Espio voice was actually like. This one's much better.

 2 Shout Outs!
1. Troy Baker

Its a bit hard to comment on only a few lines, but I think Troy Baker has potential. I'm going to vote for him since his voice sounds the most natural compared to the rest. It's calm and laid back it seems. I'd rather hear him more to judge him more fairly, but I think he's probably the best voice for Espio.

2. David Willis

Out of all the 4kids cast, David Willis was perhaps the best choice to do Espio's voice. He makes Espio calm and laid back, but also gives him a slightly aggressive tone at times too. I noticed that David sometimes made Espio sound a bit too quiet for his own good though, and not much emoting was heard from him either. But otherwise, he was pretty good. He's as good as Troy is actually, just in a different way.

3. Bill Corkery

He was okay, but he did make Espio sound more harsh compared to the other voices. I guess that's good for when Espio has some fighting spirit in him, but it may come across as him being old and gruff in other situations. Not much else to comment on this voice really. Not bad, but not that great either.

 2 Shout Outs!
1. Troy Baker (He's the most convincing IMHO.)
2. David Wills (He was pretty good, although maybe a little too deep.)
3. Bill Corkey (WAY too gruff (Espio's supposed to be 16, not 60 :P) and over the top. Sounds like some guy trying to sound badass and failing miserably.)

I already knew That I actually meant the Character Espio not the other characters he never got to voice Espio as much due to his small and minor appearances....And I think he did a Good job voicing Duke too It was only Sonic X, Shadow The Hedgehog and Sonic Rivals 2 where he voiced Espio

I apologise if my comment mislead you there :L

@Truesonic That's where you're wrong......David Wills played Elise's father in Sonic 06.

Yeah I just realised his only perfomrances were only Sonic X, Shadow The Hedgehog and Rivals 2 O_o

Anyway Yeah David Willis was the best Espio voice for me He gave him that Cool and smart attitude He was able to give The character a lot of emotion and He nailed The voice perfectly He was more Serious, calm and awesome I also agree He should of had more time voicing him but couldn't due to Espio's minor appearances...He will always be No 1 on my list David is a great actor no doubt :)

Troy Baker Shows some promise but doesn't have the charisma and spark that David did and I know it's only a few lines but i can't say he's good yet Hopefully we would be able to observe more if he gets to voice Espio with more dialogue in the future He comes second on my list

Bill Corkery was my least favourite was He sounded Way too gruff and violent, at most times he would take the voice a bit too strong and over the top which would sound a bit uncomfortable and hasty, he struggles then fails to project the tone Espio should have and then turns it into something a bit horrid It's also not as ninja-like and can also sound a lot deep at times while only a few times it sounds decent and okay

So here's my order

1) David Willis (Best)
2) Troy Baker
3) Bill Corkey

Bill Corkery is Espio's true and best voice. It was deep, it was the way you'd except a ninja to sound. The first voice actors are usually the best. BUt in some cases with 4kids fan geeks go with whatever they see on tv. All these other ones sound kinda like generic ripoffs of Bill's so I don't like the others.

I have no preferance over any of them. However, David Willis has my vote

Corkery: Not enough ninja, too much samurai. Oh, and he's ridiculously over-the-top about it.

Wills: Huh. Not bad. He definitely puts more silk and seriousness in his character. He's so under-the-top, and yet so likeable.

Baker: Um...I can't really give a grade to his performance due to lack of material. No offense to Troy, he's a good actor, no doubt.

David Willis was the true Espio voice for me he made Espio sound cool and silent but calm and relaxed at the same time which is how Espio should be and he still gave him some emotion which was good it's just a shame SEGA didn't give him much time and room to voice Espio more and missed a lot of main plots which was disappointing I think he did well in every Sonic game but his best work was in Sonic Rivals 2, Sonic X and Shadow The Hedgehog (His debut perfomrances)

@Tailsgirl I agree with Amt Troy does sound almost similar to David but really quite different he doesn't have that spark that David had with espio but i'd like to hear more of him in future games and I hope they don't do the same thing they did with David cause that was really unfair and I don't think David sounded fake

Bill Corkery was okay but he sounded too gurff like he was trying too hard at times he would sound okay but other times sound too strong like he's struggling to project that silent tone voice that Espio should have...

He may have been okay but I think david was the better actor

David is claearly the best. Troy's is very good, but it sounds very generic, ya know? A deep voice that MANY people can imitate, so its nothing special, but David has that certain jena se qua I dont know how to explain it
