Silver the Hedgehog

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Silver the Hedgehog with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Sonic the Hedgehog

Silver the Hedgehog is a white hedgehog who came from the future to kill Sonic, who in the future would cause the awakening of a monster called Iblis. His best friend is Blaze. Sonic developers SEGA liken him to Trunks from Dragon Ball Z.

Special thanks to AMT for the sound clips.

Quinton Flynn shows some promise. With what little material he's had so far, his Silver sounds really youthful and upbeat, which makes sense considering the direction the character is going. His voice and acting both sound more natural to me than Pete Capella, which gives him the edge. That being said, Pete portrayed serious Silver quite well in '06, and even sounded like Trunks.

Both did great.

Future VA Opinion:
I think Johnny Yong Bosch can make a great Silver.

Pete sounded incredibly awkward and strained. Quinton had more time to work with the character so he's the winner.

Pete Capella was kinda awkward in '06 but IMO he nailed it in Sonic Rivals 2, so I'm voting for his performance there. Quinton is also pretty good however.

This was a tough choice for me.

On one hand, Pete had a more unique voice for the character and captured the teenager/fighter for the future role nicely. Though much like Griffith with Sonic, his deliveries could get rather awkward at points.

For Quinton, he does better with the acting but I feel he could developed the charm of the character more that Pete had.

Ultimately my vote goes to Quinton but Pete comes close.

Quitnon was OK sounded a bit over the top but OK

Oh boy, HERE we go. Silver the Hedgehog. Thiiiiis is going to be FUN. The black sheep of the fandom. While Shadow at least has had titles to himself that let him build the basis of a character, Silver's most significant spotlight moment was-...uh, let's just not touch on that.

Speaking OF *that game*, however, Pete Capella was... fairly okay, I think, when he was playing a more serious Silver in Sonic '06. Not perfect - his delivery was awkward on points, and it never quite sounded fully natural - but he did create an interesting voice for Silver at first; even emulating Eric Vale's Future Trunks. But... after Sonic '06, I feel he just kept getting worse. Silver lost whatever character he had, and the voice just became increasingly obnoxious.

Quinton Flynn hasn't yet really gotten a chance to tackle meatier material, but I am giving him the vote out of these two. With the limited dimension he's gotten, he's managed to still craft a good performance from it: his Silver is youthful and upbeat, but never crosses into obnoxious, with a really natural energy behind the performance. I actually hope Quinton's Silver gets a larger role in the future, just to give him the chance of adding some meat to the bones.

1. Quitnon Flynn
2. Pete Capella

CASTING CALL: I've been contemplating this one for a while now... but, thinking about it, I think Lucien Dodge could make for a stellar Silver. His Blue from Pokemon Origins is a particular standout example of what I mean; it's youthful in pitch, but brimming with confidence and energy, the same sort of voice I think would suit Silver well.

Pete was ironically fairly good in Sonic 2006 of all games as Silver (notable for being pretty terrible otherwise), but his performances afterward got weaker, for some reason or another.

Quinton's pretty good so far, but at the same time, I honestly don't get any depth from his portrayal, since he's had such little material to go on right now.

I'm going with Quinton for having more energy and fun with his performance, but I think Pete had some moments where he did well, if nothing else.

1. Quinton Flynn
2. Pete Capella

Look, up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane... NOPE. It's Pothead the Porcupine! Real talk, look at Silver's design and tell me his head isn't just marijuana colored white. After I smoke a j, I will destroy you, Iblis Trigger. But in all seriousness, concerning the character, he's not someone I find likable nor all that detestable. On one hand, he's insufferable considering Sonic '06, yet on the other side of the spectrum, there's his subsequent appearances which aren't half-bad (*especially* Generations). Moving on to the VC.

Between the two who compose the comparison, Quinton Flynn's more natural in this kind of role not to mention appropriately youthful and animated. Pete Capella did fine even with the piss-poor material he was given, though his delivery is awkward at times. Capella's acting did improve post-'06, although the voice he was instructed to use became relatively annoying. It's enthusiastic, yeah, but downright painful and sort of forced.

Vote goes to Flynn whilst Capella's handiwork in the context of Sonic '06 was decent.

I'll give Capella the edge because while his delivery was generally bad, he lent Silver dramatic weight and a unique tint to his voice that Quinton Flynn lacks. However, Flynn's voice isn't NEARLY as annoying when Silver's being cocky, and if he ever gets a larger part as the character, I may like him better.

said at 12:52 PM on Wed Dec 17 2014
In this case, sure, but it's moreso that Capella actually did something with this character. I do prefer Flynn as Silver infinitely more than Bailey as Blaze, but I just can't bring myself to prefer it for being a better take on Silver. For me "better acting" nor "distinctiveness" by themselves are not absolute determinants. Instead I combine these factors alongside memorability to achieve my choice.
said at 8:22 PM on Wed Dec 17 2014
@rosebr10 *stare at Sonic 2006* but in all honesty the role he has on that game alone makes Peter better in my book, the moments with Flynn have negligible roles

That and I can smell a hint of one of my least favourite role Flynn has(*cough Zhong Hui*)

But voice itself always goes first unless the acting is very stiff in my book

Pete Capella: Good start, but one thing that makes me cringe is that his voice can be raspy, especially in sonic 06. I also hate him for the line "IT'S NO USE!" but as for other lines.......

silver: "Wha-chow! It's like a kick in the nuts!"

yeah, it's not gonna work for me.

Quinton Flynn: This is much more natural with less rasp. Also, he puts more emphasis on the last two lines in the free riders clip than Pete Capella in zero gravity.

So Quinton Flynn Has my vote.

These two cut it close... but I'm going with Pete. I think that Pete could capture that serious side that Silver had, and I guess that Quinton hasn't had a really serious speaking role for Silver yet. I do like them both, though.
said at 6:22 PM on Tue Oct 1 2013
@Shiny Raticate - I doubt we're gonna see Quinton really shine as Silver since Sega refuses to let the Sonic side characters have a more playable role if you will
said at 6:40 PM on Tue Oct 22 2013
@HyperVoiceActing then again SEGA has an awful tendency of ignoring it's side characters for Sonic and Tails. Look as Sonic Free Riders, Silver and Blaze were the only playable characters(not counting the Avatar)in the game who weren't in the story, and Big and Omega as well as Espio and Charmy weren't in the game, instead, Vector is on Team Rose, and a random robot(who ends up being Metal Sonic) is on Team Dark . Then Sonic Colors(Wii) where none of the characters were there, and for 2 player mode, we had recolors. Then in Sonic Generations, Omega and Big were the only characters from Sonic Colors(DS) who didn't re-appear even though Kyle Hebert(Big's voice actor) was included in the credits. And for Sonic Lost World, Amy and Knuckles do nothing, contribute nothing to the story, and have no reason not to be in Lost Hex. Let's face it, SEGA is really terrible at treating all of it's characters with respect.
NCZ (Admin)
said at 7:05 PM on Tue Oct 22 2013
@TrueMyriad About that, Sega's actually been making a conscious effort lately to put the focus more on the main cast and pushing the supporting cast aside, since one of the main criticisms of the Sonic series in the early-to mid 2000s was that they were introducing lots of new characters who were allegedly taking the focus away from Sonic. The seeds of this were planted in the Adventure games, but most feel it only became a problem with Heroes, X, and particularly Shadow's game. After '06 happened, they've been taking steps to reduce this stigma.

said at 11:05 PM on Tue Nov 12 2013
@HyperVoiceActing You're right. If only he had more of a speaking role in Generations! But it was a good performance.
said at 7:14 AM on Sun Nov 17 2013
@NCZ well they don't need anymore characters, all they have to do is give the characters more speaking roles and purpose in their own roles in the games. I am pretty sure SEGA is just using a new game to introduce a new character, when they need to just use the villains/characters we already have. In fact, we still haven't seen Dark Sonic return at all, and some characters like Shadow, Silver, Blaze, Knuckles, Amy, Big, and Omega that need to return but with what made them awesome. Omega, Big, and Knuckles are combat based, yet ever since the recent games, they never seem to do anything, and Silver, Shadow, and Blaze, characters who were in depth in story and character interaction are practically throwaway characters, and Amy was going up to the lines of a femme fatale until she became a damsel in distress. It's a serious need of having your characters telling their own story, but now they are the minor characters of their own existence.
said at 6:21 AM on Fri Jan 16 2015
@TrueMyriad Dude you do know that Dark Sonic is an Sonic X anime exclusive form right? Meaning it won't be implemented in the future sonic games so it's not gonna happen.

@PurpleWarrior13 Quinton essentially took Pete's voice & perfected it.
He made it sound more natural while still retaining the core essence of Pete's voice.

Plus, Quinton took out all the things that made Pete's voice so bad. Gone is the high-pitch, the whiny attitude, the harsh, scratchy overtones & the forced acting of Pete "IT'S NO USE" Capella. & in his place are the sweet, soft, smooth & delicate vocal tones of Quinton "METEOR SMASH" Flynn.

Now that I've given them another listen, I'm switching my vote to Quinton. Even though he hasn't had nearly as much to work with, the role fits him like a glove. He sounds so... natural; he's slipped into character so easily. With Pete, he did a pretty good job, don't get me wrong, but something about his acting in '06 was a little off. It's probably a direction issue considering that the VO in '06 overall was pretty wonky, but considering how little material Quinton's got, it's hard not to be impressed by him.

Pete I think does a much better job just due to not only him actually being developed and having a whole story based game and cutscenes to flesh out a character works much better than only talking during gameplay like what Flynn did. Not saying flynn wasn't good, but he just sounded like he was channeling Capella

to me they sound the same,, they need to add a more cinematic lines for quinton, because sonic rider sound clips is not a good comparison. but then again silver has not been part of a major story in a long while

i wasn't that serious.. it was a joke, but you are right. they need more comparison. silver is still my favorite so i can tell EVERYTHING about him.....

@alyssaclaw123321 This is pretty much the best there is. Silver hasn't had a lot in the way of dialogue lately.

I like Pete Capella better, he seems to put more emotion in his voice, not to mention it fits with Silvers personality.

Quinton Flynn is good too, but I just though Pete was more fitting.

Quinton Flynn, 'nuff said.....

Something that Sega/Sonic Team should've done in Sonic Generations (if there weren't so many missed opportunities, story-wise) would be if when you're fighting Silver, when he's attacking, Quinton Flynn would've said "It's no use!", "Take this!!", "How 'bout this?!" etc etc.

Johnny Yong Bosch would've made Silver into an Itsuki Koizumi Expy, since he and him both have ESP AND are voiced by Daisuke Ono in Japanese.

I need to hear more of Quinton Flynn's take before I throw down a vote but I like how it sounds. Pete Capella sounds like a younger Eric Vale Trunks...and I don't like his Trunks. >_>

@ConfusedPhantom Watched some Generations stuff, annnnnnnnnnnnnd the winner is Quinton Flynn!

@ConfusedPhantom At least Vale did better in DBZ Kai.

@Belial Edge Yeah, he did a bit better. He'd be awesome if he ditched that gruffness he keeps putting on.

Quinton Flynn FTW!!!

Considering how I've heard more roles from Flynn than Capella, I would personally think Quinton gets my vote... But at the same time, Silver is impatient, stubborn, somewhat immature, and has an overall bad design in my eyes, so I thought Pete attempted to score additional points... Does anyone get the strange feeling that this thing you would name a 'Hedgehog' look more like a drug-related sort of thing? I mean, what was SEGA trying to pull with how his head looks??? Some people even said that it looked like a weed plant, and poked fun of Silver, earning the obnoxious title of 'Pothead the Porcupine'. It's really my opinion, and if you all at BTVA don't seem to care, then that's cool... I just don't like Silver because of how annoying both voices can be at times. But if I actually voted, then I could've wanted to pick Quinton Flynn... Got it memorized? (Hope you get this reference, it should be technically easy to figure out)... Ninjaman out, peace!

Another really close one for me. I'd have to go ahead and say Quinton Flynn, so far. I haven't heard enough of his Silver voice yet to be certain.

The voices are very similar with one another, so it's a bit hard to pick one over the other. But noneoftheless, I have to choose, so...

1. Pete Capella

I slightly prefer this voice since Pete started the voice (essentially) and might have created the basis for Quinton Flynn to follow. His acting could use a bit of improvement in some areas, but for the most part he does the role perfectly fine. Since Silver is a naive character with little confidence in himself, I think Pete knew how to handle his personality well. So I suppose he wins this.

2. Quinton Flynn

He's a very good sound alike for Pete's voice of Silver. It would be nice to hear him in more games (depending on if Silver appears more often though) so I can be sure on how good Quinton is. In any case, he sounds like he's as good as Pete was with the role, which is a good thing that came out of the big voice change of 2010.

I think both are good for the job, but I'll go with Pete overall.

What the heck? THey sound real similar. I couldn't care less. as long as they get someone that can come close to Pete's then there's not much of a difference and less complaints from fans.

Although I have no preference over the two, Its sad that Pete didnt had much speaking role with Silver, the only two games he got the speaking roles are, Sonic 06, and Sonic Rivals 2. Other than those two, his other roles as Silver were simply voice clips. But hey, I'll try not to complain too much, besides, Quinton Flynn sounds 100% exactly like Pete. If the 4kids cast were to return, they should just like, continue voicing the anime, though. They should continue with Sonic X, but even I know that's never gonna happen D:

@akmaldanish I don't think you can say he didn't have much to work with. Sonic '06 had TONS of dialogue.

@NCZ But did silver have tons of dialouge?

@myopinion1 Yes. He had his own storyline and figured into Sonic and Shadow's.
said at 7:22 PM on Thu Jun 23 2011

Perhaps the number of Main games Silver appeared in Sonic 06 and Rivals 2 being the only games where Pete got to have more serious lines and dialogue whereas Winter Olympics, the first rivals and ZG were just lines but I'm grateful he got to do at least something though not as much :|

I was really upset he was replaced as he lives in LA where most of the new cast were found (located) :( oh well I'll have to accept it's over now

Though I wonder how Flynn will do in Generations or other future games?

I always liked Silver's voice, but he did get annoying at times. I felt Pete improved as Silver in Sonic Rivals 2. Too bad not many people noticed his improvement.

Pfff. They sound the SAME!!!! Although its no surprise to me that Pete has most votes, despite the fact Quinton Flynn Silver's voice sounds 100% identical to his.

Pete Capella was the best Silver voice for me :D he gave Silver an attitude filled with different types of emotions he sounded enthusiastic and more natural he made Silver sound more caring and depending he really cared about the character he also brought Strong passion and feelings for his Silver voice I really liked his work though It's a shame he didn't get to voice Silver much for more serious and main parts and roles I'd say he did great on every game but my favourite performance from him was Sonic Rivals 2, 06 and MASATWOG :) I still miss him

Now uh....Quinton Flynn uh....He's okay but he's lacking a few things He does sound similar to Pete but a bit more deeper and kinder o_o I like how how he has transformed the voice a bit more different but still within the range Pete had but there are a few things missing We need to hear more of him in future games I hope I get to hear more him and I mean not just in spin offs and small apperances I mean main roles and more serious lines

But Overall I think Pete Capella was the best Silver voice :D

Eh Capella was okay for a younger Silver.
Flynn made Silver sound like he has a lil more balls and less the secret emo vibe I was getting.but IT'S NO USE! Flynn is everywhere nowadays

Pete Capella sounds a tad more natural as Silver, and I just think it fits her persona the best but both are great!

Amen to that :D though I'm still unsure about Flynn hopefully we will hear more of him in time...

@AMT "Pete Capella sounds a tad more natural as Silver, and I just think it fits her persona the best but both are great!" Unless if I'm mistaken, you made a typo... This abomination of a hedgehog is a 'he', not a 'she'. Honestly, just putting it out there, not actually correcting you in any other way like a flaming troll

Capella: He certainly has the whole 'moral questioning' thing about him, but at times he can sound whiny when trying to be demanding.

Flynn: Huh. Not a bad choice on that one. He certainly captures Silver's character, but I may need more examples of his. For now, though, he wins.

@anonymous Saying these two actors' casting is the fault of Sega's entirety is, to make an understatement, a bit misaimed. That would be the voice director or casting, not the whole company.

Unfortunately, that's all that's available of Quinton Flynn. Just "samples" instead of dialogue. But if he does get to speak real dialogue in a future game, I'll consider adding a new clip.

Yeah SEGA never made good decisions when switching the voice cast. Not that I wasn't happy when they got rid of the original cast, (they were pretty lame) but the way SEGA did it so abruptly was just wrong and I even felt bad for them. And it just happened again
said at 7:13 PM on Wed Dec 8 2010
I prefer Pete Capella as well, he sounds much more natural! I always liked Silver and his voice, it fits his whole persona perfectly. Quinton is ok, but like I said not as natural, so i go with Pete!
