Knuckles the Echidna

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Knuckles the Echidna with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Sonic the Hedgehog

Knuckles the Echidna is the guardian of the Master Emerald on Angel Island, and one of the few remaining Echidnas that were thought wiped out by Chaos. He was formerly one of Sonic's rivals, but the two are now best friends. Knuckles is so named for his strong punches, but his enemies often take advantage of his gullibility. While Knuckles is rough, he can also be introverted, in part due to living by himself for his whole life.

Knuckles made his animated debut in Sonic Underground, where he was played by Brian Drummond (it was believed for the longest time that Ian Corlett provided the voice, but alas). His voice was done by Bill Wise in the Sonic OVA. In the games, he was voiced by Michael McGaharn in Sonic Adventure, Ryan Drummond in Sonic Shuffle, and Scott Dreier starting in Sonic Adventure 2. Dan Green voiced Knuckles for Sonic X and the games from Shadow the Hedgehog to Sonic and the Black Knight. Travis Willingham inherited the role for Sonic Free Riders and is his current voice.

VC thoughts update

Despite the lighter voice, I like Brian Drummond the most in here. He actually nails Knuckles' rough and cocky personality, yet he does sound like someone who's an okay guy to hang around with despite his rough exterior.

Ryan Drummond also sounds pretty good. He's a little bit too soft-spoken, but I think his overall performance is rather good.

Dan Green is also quite good. He has a nice cocky sound in his performance.

Travis Willingham is also solid in the role.

Bill Wise sounds awkward, but he has some charm.

Michael McGaharn and Scott Dreier sound kinda awkward and bland.

I'll go with Travis Willingham for this one. Dan Green is also good too.

Scott Dreier has a fitting voice, but he doesn't have the best voice direction. If he had, I'm sure he could do better. Ryan Drummond is good as well.

Brian Drummond is too light for the role, but I know he could go deeper. McGaharn is too dull and Wise is unremarkable.

Ahh, Knux. Without a doubt, my favourite of the main Sonic cast aside from Eggman; and without a doubt, my favourite voice he has had... is Dan Green. Truthfully, I feel it was Dan's performance that helped to create the Knux I am fondest of; I feel he really brought a new dimension of personality that Knux, prior to then, lacked. He was a tough, confident guardian with a steadfast loyalty and explosive temper, but Dan's great comedic timing made his Butt Monkey moments comedically effective as opposed to annoying. Dan is undoubtedly my favourite NY VA, and Knux is one of the major reasons for that. He has my vote on this!

My second favourite is, perhaps unsurprisingly with my #1 in mind, Travis Willingham. ESPECIALLY for his Sonic Boom iteration. I know some complain about how it dumbed Knux's personality down, but I feel that his lack of intelligence is endearing in Sonic Boom; he has some of the show's funniest moments with the great comedic delivery that Trav can bring to dumb muscle sorts like Knux (or Grog), and he is similar enough to, yet also distinct enough from, Dan Green that it works surprisingly well.

... controversial opinion time, but... I'm not really a big fan of Scott Dreier. Similarly to Ryan Drummond's Sonic, I always felt it was a bit lacking; while Ryan's felt inconsistent, I feel like Scott doesn't really bring half as much personality as Trav or Dan, and in Sonic Heroes, it just sounds rather annoying. From bland to a touch grating, it really doesn't do anything for me. Similarly, while Michael McGaharn was a decent first voice for Knux, I feel it hasn't' aged well; sounding a bit dull and one-dimensional. Serviceable, in both cases, but just not my cup of tea.

Ryan Drummound.. actually sounds pretty good, tbh. Probably my third favourite, I'd say, for what little material he had; I'd dare even say I prefer it from his Sonic!

And I'm not really a fan of Bill Wise nor Brian Drummond's takes here. Both sound way too high for me as Knux, and that nasal element of Drummond's only further disengages me from it. Which is a darn shame. I feel Brian could totally do better if he went for a deeper voice.

My vote goes to Dan Green!

CASTING CALL; Patrick Seitz is one of my top ideal choice for an LA Knux; he;s got vocal qualities reminiscent to (but still distinct from) Dan Green and Travis Willingham, as well as this great, confident, boisterous sound that'd work well with the modern characterization of Knux, and even can pull a more knightly, traditional take similar to Silverbolt. But his Ragna especially is what solidified this choice; in the role, he got to show off some great heroic moments, explosive anger and comedic timing, all of which is key to what makes Knux great in my opinion.

However, if we were to try and bridge Dreier's and Green's? Troy Baker would have been absolutely PERFECT; his Kanji Tatsumi literally would have nailed Knux, hammer on the head, mixing the best attributes of both for a great performance. Extending from him, Matt Mercer is also a viable option, and I think Kaiji Tang could do a good job as Knux also.

My rankings on the 5 Knuckles game VAs:

5. Ryan Drummond - Maybe it's just my first time hearing it but the voice just doesn't sound right to me. Drummond makes Knuckles sound like a generic commanding officer than the actual character.

4. Travis Willingham - While not bad, I think this voice could use some improvement. He sounds like a mix of a more tame Dan Green and a deeper version of Roger Craig Smith's Sonic voice. It has potential but for now I'm rather mixed on it.

3. Michael McGaharn - Aside from the occasional forced acting I don't think this voice is too bad. Michael does capture the more serious tone of the character but doesn't seem to have that "tough" attitude. It needed polish but overall I think it's decent enough.

2. Dan Green - Dan's take on the character is quite unique and for the most part it works. He has the right attitude as well as the grumpy nature of the character. My only complaint is that he can get a little annoying when it shouts but overall a solid performance.

1. Scott Drier - Definitely my favourite as Scott blends every quintessential trait of Knuckles perfectly while still making the role his own. He manages to be tough while still being down to earth which is also why I think his performance was the most memorable.

If The Sonic Franchise gets a New Canadian Voice Cast, I think Michael Adamthwaite would be great as Knuckles.

As it stands, I'm voting for another voice for another great Colossus VA, Dan Green. I gravitate most to his more Mature and Commanding Delivery for the character, though I would REALLY like to hear more of Ryan Drummond's Knuckles since his strong potential in the role is being held back by the weak material in Sonic Shuffle.

I used to like Dan, but like Marsusero, he just makes Knuckles sound like a dumb muscle head to me. Scott seemed to have the best understanding of the character. Travis doesn't do much more than Dan does for me, Ryan is alright but I don't get much out of his take either, Brian is too high pitched for me, Bill Wise's accent distracts me in this case, and while I like Michael's voice, his acting is not too great.

So yeah, I'm going with Scott Dreier in the end.

I'm rating these in order from his original portrayal, to what came after the shift to the 4Kids cast.

1. Michael McGaharn/Ryan Drummond: Michael laid the groundwork for his personality during this period, and I love how he delivers his lines. Ryan's a serviceable (though very short lived) substitute. He gets the job done.

2. Scott Drier: I liked it in Sonic Adventure 2, but in Sonic Heroes, he just came off as a bit annoying. I don't know, it just doesn't work for me.

Post Adventure

1: Dan Green: It's like a mix between his added stupidity, and a mix of his old one. Stoic, yet humorous at the same time.
2. Travis Willingham: This would've been a tie, given how identical both sound, but since Sonic Boom came out, Knuckles began to sound more stupid, erasing what he used to be before they altered his personality.

1. Dan Green
2. Micheal McGaharn/Ryan Drummond
3. Scott Drier
4. Travis Willingham

(excluding his OVA/Underground actors)

There was a time when I really liked Dan's portrayal of Knuckles, but nowadays, Scott's the one who takes the cake for me. I listened to his voice through clips on YouTube and here. And I'd like to think that Dan, just like in the case of Roger Craig Smith for Sonic, gave Knuckles the personality downgrade syndrome (PDS for short). Basically, Dan portrays Knuckles like a gullible knucklehead, similar to how Roger portrays Sonic like snarky jerk who doesn't care about his friends (yes, I said it). Dan fans, please don't be mad at me, and I hope you really understand my reasoning. And Scott haters, be quiet and let people like Scott if they want to. This is just MY opinion.

Note: Actors are not writers and have no say in how characters are portrayed. They are simply doing what they're told.
said at 3:49 AM on Sat Apr 23 2016
@Lpfan120 No offense, but I know that an actor isn't a writer. I guess I meant to say that was is due to the direction Dan was given, he portrayed Knuckles just like he did. Is that better? I hope you can understand.

said at 5:07 PM on Tue Jun 7 2016
@Lpfan120 Okay, let me try to put this in a better way. Ever since Dan took over the role, Knuckles received a personality downgrade. He used to cool and laid-back, but now, he's just a gullible knucklehead. To be fair, though, it isn't Dan's fault. Is that a little better? I don't mean to offend you at all, okay?

Dan Green. He gives Knuckles a distinct feel and style from the get-co. He captures the character's gruff disposition and gullible nature, but his performance shows enough confidence and gutso that he doesn't come off as your stock brute.

Ryan Drummond is actually my runner-up. He sounds like a subdued variant of Dan Green's, and since Scott Drier was DEFINITELY going for a straightforward performance, I think it would have worked well for the Pre-Shadow games to use him instead of Scott.

Bill Wise's voice doesn't suit Knuckles AT ALL, but I do like his style of delivery. He sounds cool, confident, and poised. Definitely a clash from one's initial perception of the character.

Travis Willingham started off as Green with less investment, and now he plays a slow-talking doofus. He didn't do a great job as the Knuckles I know and love, and his voice performance now does nothing to convince me I should buy into Boom's re characterization. On the plus side, his delivery is decent, and his Boom Knuckles has a distinct approach, if little else.

Scott Drier... I'm sorry, he just doesn't put any kind of spin on the character. His voice sounds like your average joe, and his delivery is rather inconsistent. Against the more cartoony voices of his peers, his voice REALLY sticks out. Why couldn't he have given the character some kind of unique touch?

Micheal McGaharn has the same problems as Drier, only he's putting in less effort.

Brian Drummond is wrong on so many levels. Why give the character a high-pitched nasally voice? His delivery is boring, too.
said at 1:48 PM on Mon Nov 14 2016
@ScottMyers oh no

Also, Knuckles (along with the 3 main characters) was basically a kid, so Brian's voice was understandable. Though, I do get what you mean.

 1 Shout Out!
1) Scott Dreier
2) Travis Willingham
3) Dan Green
4) Bill Wise
5) Ryan Drummond
6) Brian Drummond
7) Michael McGaharn

He is Knuckles, who fears none. One with the Master Emerald, unlike Sonic, he doesn't chuckle; he'd rather flex his muscles. Scott Dreier is without exaggeration the ideal voice for the character: cool and serious without being entirely no-nonsensical, as well as a little withdrawn. Scott does an especially great job in Heroes, though that's not to say he wasn't bad in SA2. Travis Willingham's portrayal as this echidna is a lot of fun to hear in the context of Boom. He uses Dan Green's take as a base whilst injecting some of his own flavor, resulting in an overall likable and entertaining performance. Speaking of the latter, Dan's also really good, though I'm not exactly on board with how relatively angry he makes Knuckles sound; to be fair, it's not his fault, however. Bill Wise boasts one of the better performances in the Sonic OVA, although that's not saying a whole lot. He works well for the Classic version of Knuckles, but most certainly wouldn't fly for the Modern iteration. Even though Ryan Drummond is charming as the Blue Blur himself, he's generally underwhelming as the Master Emerald's guardian and isn't noteworthy in the least. Brian and Michael give less-than-average performances: the former is annoying while McGaharn's acting is at best laughable (two words: "Oh no!").

Once again, Scott is my personal favorite with Travis Willingham (Boom) and Dan Green also deserving props.

Michael McGaharn is absolutely AWFUL. Completely monotone, deadpan, and totally devoid of any energy. He's the worst of the bunch by far.

I actually liked Bill Wise's voice the best from the Sonic ADV dub, even though it wasn't anything outstanding, at least there was SOME life to it. I don't think it's particularly fitting for the appearance of Knuckles, but for the context of the ADV dub, it works, more or less. The best voice, to me, of an otherwise regrettable dub.

I like the energy Brian Drummond has, but his voice is too nasally for my tastes. Not one of his best.

Ryan sounds very strange. Not who I would have envisioned to voice this character.

Scott Dreier is too whispered and breathy. I can't find any life to his performance.

Dan Green is surprisingly fantastic in the part; I like his acting and emoting.

Travis Willingham is OK; I like the energy he provides, but he doesn't really strike me as the character.

My vote goes with Dan Green.

Bill Wise sounds like Mandark. Need I go on?
Michael McGaharn is okay.
Ryan Drummond sounds like a middle ground between Scott and Dan.
Scott Dreier sounds like Knuckles if he were a little bit of a slacker. ...Wait...
Dan Green shows that if one voice can work for one character, that voice can be acted to work for another character, and I like that about some actors.
Travis Willingham is a bit high-pitched, but not too big a worry. Other than the pitch, it's a pretty close imitation of Dan's Knuckles.

Dan Green his knuckles was something I know he used to voice yugi muto from yugioh so I guess I understand why he voice knuckles while he didn't make knuckles the smartest person on the planet you still gave knuckles his serious and tough voice.

Travis Willingham is a want a be dan green I didn't like him because he didn't even try to make knuckles tough or serious he make him sound like a fool.

Ryan Drummond I got nothing into sonic wiki I never would of known he voiced knuckles.

Bill Wise. He probably wouldn't work in today day and age but back then for anime wise he was a really good knuckles.

Brian Drummond. eh

Michael McGaharn. He made knuckles a little too serious but still have that energy when it's time to get tough.

1. Scott Dreier. Specifically his performance in Sonic Heroes, because in SA2 he kinda sucked. I don't really know how else to describe it, it just sounds like Knuckles. He has the right gruffness, the right pitch level, the right balance of sounding tough and stupid. And he still knows how to act.

2. Dan Green. I used to think this was the best Knuckles voice, but now I think he sounds too old and too similar to the other voices done by the same guy. Still, he still sounds great and tough, and he puts a lot of energy into the character.

3. Travis Willingham. It's a more comedic portrayal and focuses more on the stupid aspect more than the intimidating toughness. I wish he put more into the latter, because otherwise, it just doesn't sound enough like the Knuckles that every Sonic fan knows. He does well with what he's given though.

4. Ryan Drummond. Not much to go on, but he could probably pull a pretty good Knuckles if he tried.

5. Bill Wise. One thing to remember is that he based his idea for the voice on the original sprite of Knuckles in the 16-bit Genesis games, which made him look like he's sound like a kid. In that aspect, it's not bad and works for what it is, especially for a much younger Knuckles.

6. Brian Drummond. Ehh, too whiny. I know he can do better than that.

7. Michael McGaharn. "Oh no"

Dan Green is easily the best Knuckles voice. I feel like I got more depth from the character with Dan's voice. He gave Knuckles a very edgy but cool and tough personality which was a great mix. He delivered the hard guy attitude perfectly for me and we also saw comedic aspects in his role which was another great bonus. He also made Knuckles sound serious and gave the character a really nice and natural delivery of tone at other times which brought more diversity. People usually say he sounds angry all the time but I honestly couldn't disagree more and I think that's a bit of a reptitive and poor excuse. Knuckles was angry in Sonic Battle and that was when Scott was the voice of the character. The only difference is that Dan Green did a greater amount of work on that area with Knuckles than any of the other actors. While it's true that the tough side was the main focus on Knuckles during Dan Green's time as Knuckles, I still managed to hear varied emotions from him in both Sonic X and the games which developed well and instantly made his take on Knuckles very likeable, gullbile but also wise in a way. I think he did a great job and my personal favourite performances from him are from Zero Gravity, Episode 17 of Sonic X, Sonic Rivals 2 and The Black Knight. :) I only wish he got more serious stuff in the games like with Zero Gravity and they really missed an oppourtunity to add voice acting in the story of Chronicles. Overall, he's the ideal Knuckles voice which works the best for me.

Scott Dreier comes second in my book. A bit overrated in my view. I have to be entirely honest, Scott sounded incredibly monotone and dull in Sonic Adventure 2. It's definitely his weakest effort in performance. The main problem was that he didn't give Knuckles any emotion throughout the game and he wasn't the only one who suffered doing this too. Knuckles sounded incredibly bored due to no variety of tone being given by Scott. He sounded lifeless in almost every scene and it didn't make much of a good impression for me which is why he placed lower for this sole reason because this was something that was lacking for Knuckles during the time, his voice was too monotone. Fortunately, he really improves in Heroes and actually gives Knuckles some energy and emotion which was sorely missing from Adventure 2 and it's definitely his best performance. You can actually hear this in the cutscene and during gameplay. He sounds even better in Sonic Battle when for this occasion, he actually portrays Knuckles' tough and angry side very well. So overall, his best performances as Knuckles was in Heroes and Battle which is good enough. But the main problem with Scott is that he didn't give Knuckles much variety like Dan did which is why he comes second place for me. I just don't see much personality from Knuckles aside from the "cool" factor.

Originally, I thought Travis Willingham was a poor man's Dan Green. That's probably a bit harsh. Honestly, he gives me very mixed feelings. On the one hand, he sounds rather similar to Dan Green which is a nice touch. On the other hand, there's a great lack of balance in tone which reveals noticeable shortcomings. His Knuckles voice feels much more high pitched than ever which really doesn't fit if I'm entirely honest. This was very noticeable in Colors and Generations, it just doesn't sound like Knuckles when he attempts to emote strongly. It just sounds awkward and out of character. Knuckles has also regressed heavily as a character during Travis' time which makes it hard for me to adjust to the voice. Unfortunately Travis hasn't been given a variety of a material with Knuckles so it's hard to judge. I'm not sure how he'll do in Boom but I'm hoping to see him adjust because he still has potential to be a decent successor to Dan Green but for now, he isn't quite there yet. I will see how he does in Boom but for now, he remains to be pretty average in my view. He sounded good in parts of Free Riders but there's still something off about it. If there's one positive thing to say, it's that I do appreciate him using a similar voice to Dan Green's version of Knuckles and after listening to parts of his voice in Boom, it seems he's getting really better but I will give proper judgement after I've heard all his material there.

Michael McGaharn suffered the same problem as Scott but faired worser. Too emotionless and dull for my liking. The voice is mature but average at best and the delivery of dialogue is pretty poor as well as the acting. Ryan Drummond isn't that good either for the same reasons. Uninteresting voice that doesn't bring much impact. I couldn't care less about the cartoon actors, complete miscasts in my opinion.

I always thought that Knuckles' earlier voice actors such as Michael and Scott where heading towards the typical "cool guy voice" which wasn't distinct and didn't have much personality. Whereas I felt with Dan Green, I got a variety of personality which worked well.

1) Dan Green
2) Scott Drier
3) Travis Willingham
4) Michael McGaharn

1. Scott Dreier get my vote for number one, mainly because while he does sound monotone like someone on this page has made abundantly clear he still makes Knuckles sound cool. He gives him that tough guardian feel, one you would expect from a guy who spent most of his live in solitude. Over all my favorite, always has, always will be.

2. Ryan Drummond/Dan Green? I am tied between the two despite their differences. Mainly because as my number 2 I like Dan Green a lot, he was Sonic X Knuckles, which I liked that Knuckles to, he was series but could also be comedic which was nice.

Ryan Drummond is also second because he is really close to Dreiers Knuckles but not quite there. Sure he put more emotion into his lines than Dreier but I feel he is also a tad to deep for Knuckles, that and I prefer him as Sonic anyway.

3. Michael McGaharn I don't really have much to say for him, its close enough to Scott to give it a pass but far enough to make it a third.

4.Travis Willingham Honestly he the same as Green but more of a joke and less serious, I really dislike him not because of his voice over all, but just his lighter town to Green just gives him the voice of a joke. Honestly I just can't take this Knuckles seriously, and that is something I actually want to do

For the rest T think neither of them fit Knuckles Classic or other wise. But honestly I will give it to Brian, just because it would be freaking hilarious for him to voice Boom Knuckles.

@MilanTheVillain01 I assure you, those lines do not fit knuckles personality at all, it fits the new comic relief doofus that they are turned him into. The only real knuckles is Scott Dreier, a cool calm and collected knuckles, who can sometimes be comic relief, not the joke he is now.

Bill Wise: This was a bad start He sounds too young & has a slight Jamaican accent.

Ryan Drummond: Best laid back knuckles for me

Brian Drummond: Sounds way too young and mocks Jaleel white. Probably the worst

Michael McGaharn: Nice laid back tone. Great start for knuckles.

Scott Dreier: Ok. I Don't want my comment deleted again, so I'll put it in short: painfully overrated and WAY too deep for me. (there. Is that a little bit better)

Dan Green: Better voice than Dreier. Nice rough and tough personality.

Travis Willingham: same thing, except much younger and more fitting.

So I'm voting for Travis Willingham.

1- Scott Dreier: Makes Knuckles sounds more intelligent than usual, and he draws a fine line between not being deep or high enough. Easily the best original voice cast VA, he really seemed to get Knuckles right.
2-:Ryan Drummond: I give him points for sounding absolutely nothing like his Sonic, and he sounds like a deeper Scott. I like it, but he comes off as bland at points and doesn't always make me think Knuckles.
3-: Travis Willingham: Basically impersonating Dan Green, but he doesn't make Knuckles sound angry at times, and he can get some funny material. I like it, but I think he could do better if he wasn't just impersonating Dan.
4-:Dan Green: It's well acted, and he probably got the best voice direction from any of the 4kids actors early on, but I don't like it for Knuckles, its too angry and high. Easily the most over rated VA of the Sonic 4Kids voice cast.
5-: Michael McGaharan: Incredibly generic, and his acting is a bit forced. Maybe he would have improved later on, and the voice direction probably had something to do with it, but he's easily the most forgettable game voice for Knuckles.
6-: Brian Drummond and Bill Wise: They aren't exactly terrible, and I can hear some differences in their portrayals of Knuckles, but the voices are so high pitched that they only fit the Classic version.

@chaosincarnate His line delivery was pretty monotone in SA2 and he sounded like a stoner in SH. I know Knuckles was supposed to sound calm, but Scott made him sound TOO calm. His acting was also pretty lame. Honestly, Scott just annoys me. They should've stuck with Ryan Drummond (who plyed Knux in Sonic Shuffle, since Ryan gave him more emotion and a good tone as well)

@HienFan Yes, I do, that's all there is to know. I find him to be leagues above all of his predecessors, and his voice defined how the character should sound. In Free Riders, Colours DS & Generations, Travis Willingham's Knuckles was essentially just a Dan Green impression.

But I just saw a cutscene of Sonic: Lost World with Knuckles & Amy. & I think it's safe to say that Travis has really made the role his own!

(Also, I'm not sure if it's just me or not, but Travis seems to have a bit of a Southern accent going on there in his Lost World take).

I voted for Scott. He sounded a little bland in SA2, but when I first heard clips of him in Heroes, that's exactly how I expected him to sound: cocky, yet committed to get the job done. Dan's voice is way to gravelly, and sounds angry all the time. Same goes for Travis, except he's a little more high pitched than Dan. Everyone else ranges from Meh to just plain bad.

They hired Mr.Travis to replace Dan, but I can hardly hear a difference!

@Rabindranith I'd say that Travis is slightly less gruff & a bit higher-pitched than Dan is.

But then again, the difference is pretty damn subtle.

Before Shadow came around, Knuckles was my number one favorite Sonic character and he is still in my top 2 till this very day. So I just have to express my opinion on my favorite red echidna.

Personally, it's a toss up between Michael, Scott, & Travis. But all of them are pretty good, even his VAs from old school Sonic. Brian fits very well for a classic Knuckles I think. Anyway, here's how I will list them.

1. Scott Drever
2. Michael McGaham
3. Travis Willingham
4. Ryan Drummond (He's good but he's more of Sonic for me. After all, he is my favorite VA for Sonic. His Knuckles performance was good though.)
5. Dan Green (He's good but I've heard his voice too many times but he did alright for Knuckles in Sonic X)
6. Brian Drummond (He's awesome for a classic Knuckles)
7. Bill Wise (A bit to country like for my taste lol)

The direction they took with Knuckles starting with Green complements his role in the story: forced devolution.

He really is the Piccolo of the Sonic universe.

Naturally Scott is tops for a single defining factor: characterization.

Wow, these are the guys who've played Knuckles over the years? Funny, when I think Knuckles I always pictured an Australian or a Caribbean guy voicing him. Ah well.
My favorites are Scott and Travis because I think they find a good balance between tough guy and laid back teen.

Ryan was pretty cool in Shuffle, proving the man has a lot of range to make both of the characters he was playing sound nothing alike. I also like how "stern black guy" his voice sounded. This may be the closest to an ethnic Knuckles I'm going to get :(

Bill and Ian are pretty good as a young cartoon Knuckles. No complaints.

Dan Green...well I'm sort of right there with Edork42. I like him in a guilty pleasurish way because it's so hilarious how much of a blatant Piccolo knock off 4kids was trying to make Knuckles out to be, so they picked Dan. Nothing against the guy, I just can never take him seriously.
Knuckles: SHUT UP!

Michael was pretty boring, I'm not gonna lie. He was so monotone it sounded like he was narrating all the time and every time Knuckles got angry he just sounded so fake.

Dan Green and Travis Willingham.

Both are AMAZING voice actors for Knuckles! They make him sound like a tough guy, which suits his character with his large, spiky fists and all.

I'm GIANT Knuckles fan so I'm very picky when it comes to choosing which is better. But I gotta say, with all the new voice actors Sega got for the Sonic franchise, Knuckles' new voice is surprisingly impressive compared to the other characters' new voices (Amy and Shadow... blegh) I mean, I think Travis did an awesome job! He almost sounds like Dan, but less gruff and scratchy, which is a kudo point for me. In fact, I believe he may even do a ever better job than Dan Green in the future (ya' know, whenever Knuckles' role in games becomes more significant and he get's some decent lines.)

My vote goes out to Travis!

@Anthonyiscool64 I think so too, but I don't think Shuffle is that popular of a game so people just glance over it. I think it's amazing how he can play two roles at the same time and have them sound nothing alike!

@MilanTheVillain01 But still Ryan did ok as Knuckles. But I still go with Dan Green.
said at 9:15 PM on Sat Sep 29 2012
Michael sounds bit generic as Knuckles. His performance is decent but just non-rememberable overall. Its a good thing he was only in one game, otherwise I think Knuckles would have been forgotten easily.

Scott brings in a different spin compared to his successors. He brings in a very confident Knuckles which fits pretty well considering that Knuckles at the time was a bit different than today.

I'm going to flat out said that every time I hear Dan Green as Knuckles, I expect him to say "You've just activated my trap card. :P" Jokes aside, he really does a good job as Knuckles as he is one of the few NYC voice actors who was great from the start. I do think he sounds a bit too angry when he speaks though not enough to make it ruin his performance.

Travis has a lot of similarities to Dan Green though I wouldn't call it a carbon copy. You can detect the difference between the two where as Dan is better angry while Travis is more smug which in this case isn't a bad thing as he is suppose to be a friendly rival to Sonic.

I'm going to have to give both Dan Green and Travis a tie as they are both equally good as Knuckles.

@Edork42 In terms of video games I like Travis, Scott, and Ryan the best. To me they showed a lot of charm and charisma in their roles.

Dan Green came off to me as a terrible over actor and his voice sounded too gruff and deep making Knuckles always sound like he had to take a ****. So he was basically a poor man's Christopher Sabat.

Micheal McGaharn was a very bland and unmemorable zombie. He dragged down every scene he was in in SA1.

Ian Corlett's take fits his Knuckles' design, but Scott Drier and Dan Green fit theirs equally as well. So it's a three way tie between them.

Bill Wise is terrible, Michael McGraham is painfully wooden in the role, Ryan Drummond was just filling in, and Travis Willingham is doing a Dan Green impression.

@Torak Ok I was wrong on this one,Travis sounds like he's trying too hard: voted for Dan Green.
said at 11:27 PM on Fri Dec 30 2011
I gave my vote to Travis Willingham.

As pretty much everyone below me has said, Travis & Dan sound pretty much identical. The only differences I hear (albeit, differences that are vague as all hell) is that Travis is less gruff & a bit higher-pitched than Dan is.

Knuckles is meant to be 16 years old, right? Travis makes Knuckles sound like his exact age. Dan sounds slightly older (like an 18 or 19 year old Knuckles).

Scott Dreier was a bit too laid-back when he was he supposed to be edgy, whereas to contrast, Dan Green was a bit too edgy when he was supposed to be laid-back.

Travis Willingham succesfully combined Scott Dreier's laid-back tone with Dan Green's edgy tone (although he's essentially just imitating Dan Green, which is a bit lazy IMO).

It still, to this day, scares the absolute bloody crap out of me just how similar (well, voice-wise, at any rate) Dan & Travis are.....

#1 - Travis Willingham. (Tiny Miniskirts FTW!)
#2 - Scott Dreier. ("Wada-wada-wada!" - Knuckles' digging noises in SA2)
#3 - Dan Green (It's time to duel!!)
said at 9:22 PM on Sat Dec 31 2011

That's a good way to view Travis's Knuckles voice. He makes Knuckles sound a bit laid back, like Scott did, but also edgy like Dan did. That's the direction Travis should go with for Knuckles, but I do wish he'd stop imitating Dan Green's voice.

That's the only flaw I have with an otherwise decent voice for Knuckles.
said at 5:22 AM on Tue Dec 13 2011
personally, i think Troy would be the best Knuckles if he was given a chance. but, out of the people who actually did, Travis Willingham won because he did great emoting and he sounded like he was 16. Dan Green and Scott Drier are tied closely behind Travis because they lacked what each other had.

Ian James Corlett- It's alright for the animated series standards but I wouldn't picture him as Knuckles now
Bill Wise- Copy and paste from the last one though he was better than other cast in the OVA
Michael McGaharn- His performance in Adventure was mediocre at best, though I wonder why he doesn't come after that game
Scott Drier- He is my all time favorite Knuckles. I love his deep, tough, and laid back attitude he has for Knuckles, which made me think Knuckles was the black Sonic character in the series, next to Rouge.
Dan Green- He was pretty good as Knuckles, pretty much he was one of the 4kids actors that started good in the series. Though the only problem I had (and I think this the writers fault from Sonic X), was that he made him sound angry and stupid, which kind of upset ted me as a kid watching the show; but nonetheless I'm glad he was chosen to be Drier's successor.
Travis Willingham- basically sounds just like Dan Green only higher pitch, not that I'm saying it's bad, just hoping he would do his own voice of Knuckles, but regardless, he sounds good and I welcome him along with the new voices.

Though each of them has brought in the table and gave us what they got, my favorite will always be Scott Drier's, to me, his voice and personality is the definition of Knuckles.

Ian James Corlett - It's okay. To be fair, this is the very first [English] Knuckles voice (BTW, did anyone else catch the Good Son reference?).
Bill Wise - Better than Ian, but, like with all of the other OVA actors, I can't decide how much I like this guy.
Michael McGaharn - The voice is okay, but he's REALLY monotone.
Ryan Drummond - Once again, the voice is okay, but the acting is a bit better.
Scott Drier - Better. Though I'm kind of mixed on his acting.
Dan Green - He's Dan Green, what more can I say? His acting is even good in Sonic 06, IMO.
Travis Willingham - Pretty much Dan Green, but at a higher pitch... which to be honest, makes me bring up the point of why they even bothered to hire a different actor.

Scott Dreier is the best for me, he sounds like a tough guy, a wise guardian, and a wisecracker all in one, perfect for Knuckles.

Dan Green is alright, but I don't think it really fits Knuckles, that combined with the fact that its the exact same tone he uses for his roles just doesn't make him the ideal Knuckles voice for me. Not saying he's bad, but I don't think he's that great either.

Travis sounds like he's trying too hard to sound like Dan Green, only his voice is way too high pitched for it.

Ryan Drummond does the second best for me, he sounds pretty stern. Maybe a little too stern though.

Michael sounds like he doesn't have enough emotion in his voice.

Bill Wise and Ian James be fair, the latter sounds like he could make a good younger sounding Knuckles, but both are pretty terrible in the role.

@enerjak I guess Michael McGaharn was unavailable, so they just picked Ryan Drummond on the spot since he has a really deep voice. I don't see what him also playing Sonic has to do with anything, since as long as you have range, you can make them sound different and nobody will suspect a thing. I'd say he succeeded, because for a stand-in he made a pretty good Knuckles.

People are seriously missing the point of Knuckles' voice as well as his character.

So what if Dan Green has the most fitting voice for Knuckles?
That doesn't change the fact that the character should be treated and portrayed with more respect.

Yes, we get it. Knuckles gets tricked at times and Scott Dreier voiced him in ONE game where he wasn't very smart. That only shows that Scott Dreier is versatile.

It doesn't matter anyway what voice he has so long as people are aware that Knuckles is an excellent character with an original backstory.
said at 6:22 PM on Mon Apr 11 2011

Well people tend to find the character in different ways

Of course I believe Knuckles is Independent,Strong,Brave, wise but also at some times Gullible, short tempered and confused at things too

Everyone has an opinion on the character...not everyone will favour Knuckles as their number one character but others well as the character's voice too
said at 8:10 AM on Sat Apr 16 2011
Still, when you look at horribly written games like Sonic rush, SATBK, and Sonic Colors, it's easy to see that Sega has no idea what they're doing with Knuckles. He deserves to be made playable in more games with more respectable roles.

@LRoboto I think Knuckles should get his own game. Yeah, I know there was Knuckles' Chaotix, but did anyone actually own a 32X to play i?

Actually, a voice-acted, 2.5d remake/sequel would be awesome. If Travis Willingham evolves his voice to sound less like Dan Green and play Knuckles as the calm, laidback warrior he is, it'd seal the deal.
said at 10:27 PM on Sat Apr 16 2011

True....on the positive side at least they brought back some of his abilities in some games Zero Gravity, Dark Brotherhood and Rivals 2 but it's not enough is it? hopefully in future games more abilities of his will be brought back and NCZ I like the idea of Knuckles having his own game would be interesting I never got the chance to play Knuckles Chaotix in the past as it was removed from Compilations I wonder how it was...

I think it'd be an awesome idea for Sonic Team to make a game starring Knuckles and Shadow; maybe "Shadow & Knuckles" (like Sonic & Knuckles of 1994), which might provide an explanation where Shadow and Knuckles were during Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors (They were confirmed to be in Unleashed, but were scrapped).

@BlueSkySlash @Sonic_Blaze

Dan and Travis do sound similar but they both have a few differences Notice how Dan sounds more Edgy,Free and Gruff at times and While Travis now His performances in Colours and Free Riders he sounded less gruff and more calmer But then at a few times notice he will sound very high pitched when getting angry or yelling which doesn't work for me Which is why I have mixed feelings mianly "Meh" for Travis But for me They are similar but not exactly the same as I noticed a lot of differences there :)

In my opinion I thought Dan Green was the best Knuckles voice some people say That he makes Knuckles sound angry all the time but he really doesn't it's just most of the time and Here's the thing Knuckles had major roles back then with The Master Emerald getting broken into pieces etc etc....And working together with Sonic and Tails(sometimes Amy and Cream) mainly in games like Heroes, The first few adventures

But have a think about that was was Knuckles like in Past games he was tricked a few times but not much Even the very first when he Appeared....He was tricked in Sonic Battle I remember who voiced him then.....Knuckles displayed this way before the 2005-10 Games and Sonic X

It's only now That SEGA Have been starting to make Knuckles act like this more He is Gullible and can be easily tricked at most times while He is also smart at times and angry at times They mix in together except the Angry side has been shown a little too much that's all.

I don't think it was Mentally Disabled Portrayal it was just used a little too much and it still is There are some games where Knuckles has a important role and sounds more calm games like Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Sonic Rivals 2 and others but I'm not really that picky I think he was awesome in all games Notice he can transform his voice well as he played other roles Vector,Prof Pickle and Mephiles ...and I wouldn't say Sonic X Fan Geeks Lets just say Sonic X Fans and The New Generations, The new Sonic fans but not only them There are a mix of Old and New fans who like Both The Original and 4Kids Cast

I wasn't keen on Scott Dreier as he sounded too deep and generic for me but hey it's just my opinion a few people will disagree but hey that's how it goes...

But I respect both your opinions No problem guys...I'm not too keen on Travis either but maybe in time he can improve I'm actually trying to focus on The JP VAs In previous games I'd admit I'd like to hear them just for the fun to see how different it is compared to The English VAs I like to see what else they can do in the future and They have stayed here for a while so :)

The only Voices I like for the new English cast SO Far Are Vector (Keith Silverstien), Orbot (Kirk Thornton) and of course Eggman (Mike Pollock) :D

I'll admit I liked the 4Kids Cast a lot They will always be the Truesonic voices to me not matter what and even if they are replaced I still liked all of them, And yeah about Knuckles I'd say I don't mind the way Knuckles is being portrayed but perhaps he could have another major role it doesn't need to be the Master Emerald again just something similar to Chronicles and Zero Gravity But he needs appear in more main games instead of spin offs That's just what I think anyway :)

Dan Green and Travis sound the same to where I actually think it's the same guy (when it really isin't) but geez they sound so alike that the casting crew got lazy here. Dreir has been and wiill always be Knuckles to me even though we got fan geeks and kids that watched SOnic x prefer Dan Green and the angry yet mentally disabled portrayal of knuckles.(and his advertisement in SOnic 06 with trading cards)

@Sonic_Blaze Maybe the casting crew thought Sonic fans love Dan so much that they thought it was good to have Travis sound like him for Knuckles. I wish either Travis tones down the "Dan Green" tone, or they should get a different voice actor. But this is wishful thinking and it likely won't happen anytime soon.

Wow, Knuckles has had a big variety of different voices during the series, ranging from the medium-high pitched (Ian James Corlett and Bill Wise) to the low and deep (Scott Drier, Michael McGaharn and Ryan D) and to the gruff, but laid back types ( Dan Green and Travis Willingham). As a result, there probably will be diverse opinions on all these voices (though I think people will more likely agree that Knuckles' first voices (Ian and Bill) weren't really the best). That being said, I'll say what I think of each.

1. Scott Drier

I like Scott the most overall. He brought in a voice that was laid-back, but also badass at the same time. There were a few times when Scott made Knuckles tough-sounding as well. The only fault that he had was his acting was stale sometimes, but this was mostly apparent in Sonic Adventure 2 when he first voiced Knuckles. He definitely improved in the later games he was in. Of all the original voice cast, he was one of my favorites, and I do miss him a little.

2. Dan Green

Even though I do think Dan Green's a good actor, I never warmed up to him being Knuckles. I just don't picture Knuckles with an overly gruff/constipated sounding voice. Now there are times when Dan does make Knuckles a bit laid-back and serious, here and there, but most of the time he just gives Knuckles a voice that sounds like Knuckles takes steriods while lifting weights. I'll admit that my ranking of Dan is more preference more than how good he actually is.

I think Dan did fine and Knuckles, and I know a lot of Sonic fans loved him doing the role. I can respect that. I just don't think he's the best choice as Knuckles, personally, and I felt a couple other voice actors at 4kids, like Marc Diraison (Zolo from 4kids One Piece), would have been better choices than Knuckles. But that's in the past. Dan Green did a respectable job as Knuckles, he just wasn't my preference.

3. Travis Willingham

Eh...I'm not very sure about this voice. It's basically a very similar voice to Dan Green's portrayl of Knuckles. But I noticed this one's not quite as gruff as Green's was. Travis seems to bring the hippie side of Knuckles a bit more, while still keeping his toughness intact. That's fine and all, since Knuckles is a character of both traits. His voice is medium pitched and, again, it's not something I've really warmed up to. But I'm willing to give him more time and see how he performs in later games.

4. Ryan Drummond

Ryan was only used in Sonic Shuffle, and it's mostly because Micheal McGaharn retired from the role beforehand. I think his voice was pretty good. Unfortunately, he doesn't really show how he could truly act as Knuckles, as his acting was so bland in Shuffle (like most of the other actors in that game). So that's why I don't rank him high on this list. Based on voice alone, I like him more than Dan and Travis, but his acting is what makes him weaker than the other two.

5. Micheal McGaharn

Sonic Adventure's voice cast, as a whole, was mediocre in terms of acting performance. Micheal is a good example of having rather dull acting in that game. His Knuckles voice was not bad, but not particularly great. Some of his lines had no emotion whatsoever. It sounded like Micheal recorded his lines at night after working hard all day. Simply put, he wasn't all that good, and I don't mind that he left.

6. Bill Wise

I don't have much to say about this one, except that it's very unfitting for Knuckles. His acting isn't all that bad, but it wasn't memorable either. I can only remember him for saying that stupid line: "MY HATS ON FIRE! HELP!"

7. Ian James Corlett

Dear god. This is NOT what I pictured Knuckles to sound like. This is the kind of voice I'd picture Nack the Weasel having than Knuckles. I never saw much of Sonic Underground, so I don't have much else to comment on this one.

@Mikeandsnoop2 STFU! Dont get angry at people for voting for Dan Green! Just because you dont like Dan Green doesnt mean what you say is true. Dan Green did not make him sound like an idiot. Besides, how can you not like Dan Green? Even before he voiced Knuckles, he had SO MANY fans. Oh well, its your opinion that matters. But I like Scott Drier, Dan Greem, and Travis Willingham the best. They all have my VOTES!!!!!!!

@akmaldanish Please don't get mad at people for not voting him either. Everyone is allowed their own opinion. The "STFU" was highly uncalled for.

@NCZ When did I say I was mad at him for not voting Dan Green? Dude, I dont care who wins. If Ryan Drummond won I still wouldnt care. Just because 4kids has most votes, doesnt mean they are automatically the best. All sonic voices are great, but people cant seem to look upon that fact. But whatever. My point is it doesnt matter who gets most votes. Its he people's opinion that matters and appearantly more people just happen to like 4kids, thats it. And sorry if my english is bad D:

but I will admit that Scott Dreier's acting was flat in sonic adventure 2 but he improved in sonic heroes

why is everybody is voting for dan green?! he's not the best knuckles voice he make him sound like and angry idiot & that is not what knuckles is, it's the new writters at SEGA that made knuckles act that way think back at Sonic 3 & Knuckles his personality is devious, cool, hip, and a tease like what even happen to knuckles teasing sonic but now it's sonic teasing knuckles, Scott Dreier is the one that fit the character in so many ways he got that edge, the additude, that moxie, spunk, and coolness!

In order to douse Scott Dreier supporters, some people bring up Sonic Battle. Lets not forget that sonic battle was released AFTER sonic X came and ruined Knuckles the echidna.

I'm aware that Knuckles had the "getting tricked" aspect on him since his debut but games like SA2, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic Chronicles have shown that Knuckles is capable of graciously learning from his mistakes. He's every bit as fast and skilled as characters like Sonic, Shadow, and Blaze and he should be treated as such. Scott Dreier forever.

Scott Dreier wins this. Knuckles is supposed to be the down-to-earth member of Team Sonic. Yes, he's tough, but he's also calm and laid-back. Scott nailed that. Michael McGaharn is second, for the same reasons. Ryan Drummond was also a good soundalike.

As for Dan Green, don't get me wrong, I like his Knuckles. When it came to making Knuckles sound tough, he was the man. The problem was that he overplayed Knuckles' tough side. He could sound comical, and somewhat natural, but at the same time his voice was always edgy. Travis Willingham follows him up. Sounds similar, but since Free Riders is light-hearted, there's no way this is the full extent of what he can do. I really want to hear more, and I hope that he uses his Sideswipe voice. That would be perfect, since Sideswipe loves a good fight, but is still a "cool guy" inside, just like Knuckles.

Ian Corlett and Bill Wise? Eh... too nerdy. And vaguely Southern.

To be fair SEGA/Sonic Team didn't give Knuckles any serious parts or roles during Dan Green's time He never got any important storylines Knuckles was only in Spin offs which annoyed me he never starred in a main game not since Sonic 06 either I'd say if you look at Most Sonic X Episodes and Sonic Rivals 2 Story (PSP) I'd say those were his best performances working on Knuckles' mature and kind side he didn't play his tough side as much but he had a mixture of both parts He also did a good job with both Knuckles and Sir Gawain in BK....Despite that I still liked Dan Green best even if he was working on his tough side most of the time

Knuckles was also scrapped in Unleashed along with Shadow that really disappointed me cause I thought Dan Green would get more time working on his calm but rough and cocky side too Shame really :/ plus you would of got to play as Knuckles and Shadow too....Also this would of been one of Knuckles appearance in a main game since Sonic 06

But I agree with most of your points in many ways I like Dan Green overall but I also like Scott 2nd too :D

@Truesonic True that in games, Dan didn't get much of a chance, but Knuckles was serious quite frequently in Sonic X. Even then, his Knuckles just doesn't work as a serious character. Too one-sided.
said at 8:11 PM on Wed Feb 23 2011

I still like Dan the best though but I respect your opinion no problem :D I just hate the way Knuckles hasn't appeared much in main games....It's always spin offs for him :/ plus he acts the same way a bit too much

I disagree But I that's what you think then fine I respect that but Dan was my favourite Knuckles voice and I thought he did good most of the time He can do serious moments with Knuckles It's just Knuckles hasn't been portrayed as well as he was in earlier games I wish they could bring some of his Abilities were brought back a little more

But SEGA can still also bring The Gullible and angry side to Knuckles too just not all the time.

@myopinion1 He wasn't too bad in Secret Rings. He sounded the same as ever. I didn't have any complaints. In fact, his "I am Sinbad of the Seven Seas! Adventurer of Adventures! Who the heck are you?" is one of my favourite lines because I love the way he says it.

Hmm.. I liked Scott the most not only because I'm a friend of his, but I like how he could portray Knuckles to be tough cool and less tempered that he makes Knuckles Awesome. Dan and Travis do sound similar but they work on more with the tough hot tempered comoedic side. plus Dan Green is YU-GI-OH! which was also a nice touch. but I still like Scott better

Comparison on his most recent voices...

Dreier: He's not great, but he's not bad either. He does give him the sound of an athlete. But it just doesn't sound tough enough for it to belong to a character named "Knuckles".

Willingham: Wow. He and Dan Green have such similar voices. No wonder they chose him. But I'd have to wait for more voice samples from him.

Green: He barely takes first. Not because his performance was better, but because he's freakin' Dan Green! He just captured the tough guy attitude without even trying.

I know he said this at Sonicon and I think it was very kind and generous of Scott to help Dan but not only did he help Dan also did some research himself on previous games to study and crack Knuckles' voice and I think he did a pretty good job and yes he did audition for Eggman at first but I'm glad they gave him Knuckles instead :)

I think Scott was good most times and he portrayed Knuckles well but he lacked a few things...he was too deep at most times, the voice was generic at times too but he would have improved on this a bit if he was given more time that's why he comes second on my list for now

Dan was my favourite out of all of them he also said Knuckles was one of his favourite roles along with Yugi

Ryan and Michael both sounded similar but a few differences so they are in the middle while Bill and Ian were my least favs

To add on to truesonic's SPOT ON review, I have to say to people who say Kncukles was always angry and gullible when Dan Green started playing him... Think about it. What was Knuckles like in Sonic Battle? And who's voice did he have? And where did it say that Knuckles NEVER used to have a temper or would never get tricked like an idiot? Knuckles displayed that in his FIRST game!

So if you dont like Dan Green thats fine, but please... Come up with a better excuse then what I just explained. Its sad. And dont delude yourself into thinking Knuckles was anything opposite of his personality. He's been the same always.

Also on a side note, give a little bad credit to voice directors, they take a part into the acting part of voice acting

1) Dan Green
2) Scott Dreier
3) Travis Willingham ( Just For Now)
4) Michael McGaharn (Tie with Ryan)

6) Ian James Corlett
7) Bill Wise

Dan Green was the Ultimate Knuckles voice for me He gave Knuckles the rock, hard and edgy voice that Knuckles should have and he made him dumb at times which other people like and the angry voice was used most of the time which was funny at times XD He put his heart and soul into the character deep down I think he really cared for the character and he did give Knuckles a lot of emotion

Especially the chemistry between Rouge and knuckles (Caren and Dan) it really worked well for them more than (Scott and Lani) but they were good too

And to the people saying he makes Knuckles sound angry 24/7 should really listen carefully Play the games, Watch the Sonic X episodes and listen carefully he does not sound angry all of the time just most of the time It's the V/A director's fault plus script writers not giving him enough and more serious lines and he's not the only one who suffered like this a lot of the other V/As did too so please listen carefully before shouting out things like that...

It's been great having Dan these last 7 years and I will miss him He will always be my Knuckles to me (Also Vector and minor characters) ^_^

Scott was also a really good Knuckles he was spot on and the acting was really well done the only problem with him was that he was too deep and generic he should made Knuckles sound a bit more edgy and free But he acted well like Dan did

Michael and Ryan suffered the same problem too but they were more deep than Scott, Michael sounded a bit like a narrator and it was a bit too much but he could act a bit at least and for Ryan well he was okay but same problem but he didn't add anything special in Knuckles so they both tie for me

Bill and Ian were my least favourites Ian made Knuckles sound too high and hyper active and Bill didn't make Knuckles sound how he is supposed to be like Didn't like their performances

Travis doesn't sound exactly like Dan but only similar but trying to imitate him proves that Dan is the better actor and I've noticed at some times He sounds almost like Dan but then at the next minute he sounds high pitched like he's swallowed hellium or somebody screaming loud or like somebody on a period and almost near Amy's new voice XD He needs more time to work on it but I think he shouldn't try too hard but for now I'm not sure about him for now.

I'm not saying I like him but I don't hate him either just not sure about his Knuckles' voice...

I believe the reason they replaced him is because Dan Green works in New York, but Sega's new cast of voice actors are all Los Angeles based. Since Travis Willingham is in Los Angeles and sounds just like Dan Green, they probably decided it was easier to hire him than go to the trouble of bringing Dan back. (He'd either need to do all his work in NY, or he'd have to come to LA.)
