Jet the Hawk

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Jet the Hawk with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Sonic the Hedgehog

Jet is the leader of the Babylon Rogues. He is cocky and arrogant, as well as a thrill-seeker and rival of Sonic's.
Created by NCZ on Nov 14 2010
Sonic Riders (2006)
Jet the HawkJason Griffith
Jason Griffith
Sonic Free Riders (2010)
Jet the HawkMichael Yurchak
Michael Yurchak

Michael's performance was more natural and realistic-sounding, and it expressed Jet's cocky, immature personality well (though I still find there's something slightly off about it). I felt Jason's was too throaty, high-pitched and similar to his Usopp voice (which is, for those unfamiliar with One Piece, not a good thing). I do think he was slightly better in Zero Gravity, being less annoying, but then it sounded more like a gravelly Sonic, and a bit too "evil".

I don't really think either is my ideal voice for Jet. But I'll vote for Griffth I suppose, mainly due to his Zero Gravity performance.

To be honest neither of them are good. Jason Griffith sounds like he's trying to impersonate Gilbert Gottfried's Iago whilst Michael Yurchak sounds too much like a whiny teenager.

I suppose I'll give it to Michael since he at least sounds less distracting and annoying than Jason.

Both actors definitely have different approach for the voice so hard to choose

Side note Kyle mccarley or Orion pitts would make good choices for Jet

I dislike Jet the Hawk, but...if I have to choose, I say Michael Yurchak, but that is not really saying something.

It's basically a tossup between a silly clown voice from Jason Griffith, and a parrot like voice from Michael Yurchak, here: I'd say the better of the two is Michael Yurchak, but I can't say either leaves the best impression on me.

Not too keen on either this character or any of the Babylon Rogues; at the very least they aren't Princess Elise or the Deadly Six, but my point still stands. Michael Yurchak's admittedly more distinctive and not quite as shrill as Jason Griffith's rendition, though he doesn't get Jet's arrogance across well enough. Griffith meanwhile is squawky and recalls too much of the VA's performance as Usopp, but also gets a better feel for this Babylon leader's overconfident nature. It's worth noting that Griffith sounds different tackling Jet in Zero Gravity, making him sound a tad less obnoxious, even though he's basically recycling the Werehog and/or Darkspine voice. Can't say I prefer one over the other here.

@CelestialOuroboros While I'm not exactly that fond of the Deadly Six, I find them more tolerable than Elise.

@8000 Saiyans You know what? Currently I've been watching The Great Clement's LP of Lost World, and well... kinda agree at this point in time.

The Zeti are less characters and more blatant archetypes, sure (especially if you look no further than Zeena), yet on the plus side, Sonic's interactions with them are actually very good. What helps is that one can tell the script in LW doesn't take itself too seriously. The game's plot is heavily undercooked, yeah, but I'll stress this again in all caps to sound more important than I am: LOST WORLD ISN'T TAKING ITSELF SERIOUSLY. Whenever I play or at least watch footage of a Sonic title, I ain't lookin' for some deep storyline or anything that's pretentious. This is a franchise that revolves around a blue hedgehog who either gets his speed from A) dem sneakers tho; or B) scarfing chili dogs, though leaning more towards the former. It's okay for Sonic the Hedgehog to have its tongue planted firmly in cheek, it's alright if there isn't too much within the plot, and furthermore it's totally cool if the series borders on cheese. You know those vocal leitmotifs in Adventure 1, 2, and Heroes? They're hella corny in hindsight, but I still love a lot of them even today.

Whew. Maybe I strayed a bit too far from the point you made, so I *am* sorry if I got carried away there. Shorthand version is I get that opinion.

@CelestialOuroboros And here's one more thing, I don't mind if they're one-dimensional. Mephiles, Black Doom and Eggman Nega are also one-dimensional, so I don't see why that's a problem with the Deadly Six.

Were people really expecting deep and complex villains in a Sonic game?
said at 3:14 AM on Wed Nov 22 2017
@8000 Saiyans Eggman Nega is way better than any of the other villians you mentioned tbh.

As for the Deadly Six... they're alright IMO.

Okay, I just had to register for an account here so that I could make a comment.

I understand that I'm extremely biased here, but Jason Griffith as Jet the Hawk was my childhood, and one of my absolute favorite Sonic the Hedgehog characters- he still is. To know that Jason was replaced by Michael Yurchak who sounds nothing like the original Jet the Hawk that I know and love tears me apart. Sure, Jet's voice was scratchy, but sometimes it's good to have those kinds of voices for characters.
said at 11:39 AM on Fri Jan 1 2016
Allow me to give my opinions on Jet's voice actors.

Jason Griffith: His voice for the character was just a squawky version of his Sonic. People seemed to have a strong dislike for this voice. At the same time, however, Jet was a new character when Sonic Riders came out. You should understand why he sounded like that.

Michael Yurchak: His voice for the character is more unique than Jason's. His performance was more natural and realistic, just like the editor (NCZ) said above. Yet, I feel that there's something off about the voice. If he keeps voicing Jet, he's either got to improve or he has to go.

Overall, I think I'm going with Michael. To be honest, Jason wasn't bad, just okay in my opinion. Both of these guys aren't perfect for Jet, but you know.

On second thought, I now think Jason is the better Jet. Michael sounds like, how do I say, a dorky nerd.

If I was in charge of the voice cast during the 4Kids era, I would've picked Eli James for Jet. His voice for the character could've sounded like Jason's Jet, but more unique. Also, Jet could've sounded like Yuma Tsukumo. That's just my opinion.

I'm in the minority on the voice comparisons of Jet the Hawk here, i'm switching my votes for Michael Yurchak. Only because his voice sounds not sonic-like like Jason's (No offense dude, your voice is great but, you're better off not using your sonic voice as a variant to jet) and more so unique.

Other than that, i think Michael should get better at voicing Jet if there's the next Sonic Riders game with the actual plot with models, and not all story artsy and other types of gameplay i would and would not speak much.

@SteelEthlan Well, Jet's going to be playable in the new Mario & Sonic game, so maybe he'll get some new lines there.

@Hydreigon Yeah and like i said i think that Michael really needs to get better at Jet otherwise, he'll get rusty at voicing the leader of Babylon Rogues himself.

@CuriousUserX90 Aw please like there's any chance of happening there and i'm fairly certain that Michael Yurchak would return voicing jet and i said this previously and I'll say it on that recap note, he needs to get back improving his Jet voice, or else he won't be getting anywhere.

@HienFan Seems I wasn't paying attention to who was winning on the compare since I only went to hear the voice.

Considering how Jason has 19 votes on the poll, I find it kinda surprising how you find it surprising that I liked his Usopp.
said at 3:03 AM on Wed Oct 15 2014
@Ross123 19 is average(believe me some got less than 5) for 4Kids One Piece but considering the comments I heard of THAT Usopp(too comedic not serious) everywhere well
said at 9:07 AM on Tue Oct 21 2014
@HienFan I'm guessing that the 4Kids cast aren't doing to well on One Piece compares. Well, that's if you compare them to the Sonic compares.
said at 7:53 AM on Tue Nov 18 2014
@Ross123 I believe there's a minority out there who hates 4Kids to death somewhere(DA alone is not a safe place to proclaim you ever like 4Kids One Piece far as I know)

It's funny how people gush for them as Pokemon but when it comes to One Piece it's ZOMG FANDUB QUALITY

I guess we're lucky Odex never dubbed Sonic however unlike One Piece though
said at 10:55 AM on Tue Nov 18 2014
@HienFan I hate to break it to you but I don't watch One Piece. I just went over there to listen to Jason's Usopp since you mentioned it.

said at 10:42 AM on Wed Nov 19 2014
@HienFan Just making sure is all. Gotta feel bad for the 4Kids though. No one deserves to be hated on just because they aren't great VAs. Dislike would be the better term in my opinion.

The only time I hate on celebs is when they do douche things all the time. Bad voice acting isn't on that list for me.
said at 11:47 PM on Tue Dec 16 2014
@Ross123 Unless it's Pokemon then it's the other side of the yard(stares)

Though if I'm not mistaken some of the hatred is from them dubbing some very low quality mockbusters like Ratatoing(look up Mike Pollock's page and listen to the one clip and weep at how ugly it is)
said at 10:15 AM on Wed Dec 17 2014
@HienFan I did as you said and my conclusion is... ok, it's not as bad as you made it out to be.

I found Mike's clip to be average & generic. And that's about it. Also I haven't seen the movie.
said at 8:24 PM on Wed Dec 17 2014
@Ross123 I was exaggerating but I heard of that film from a link on Ratatouille's page on TV Tropes
said at 9:06 AM on Thu Dec 18 2014
@HienFan Well considering Mike's performance wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. I have to say the exaggeration was necessary.
said at 6:57 AM on Thu Dec 25 2014
@Ross123 Lisa Ortiz(the female talking to Mike's character) sounds a bit generic herself

But as I said while 4Kids is haaaated for stuff like that and this and... One Piece... their Pokemon fandom is HUGELY BELOVED(beware of looking up the anime on any site that allows comment, there's an infamous troll with who knows how many accounts who takes it as a fact 4Kids is godly with no flaw in Polemon despite their 'horrible' One Piece dub and the current one is worse than murder and anyone who says otherwise is a TROLL since how dare they replace the cast for money reasons)

Cause not like Sonic and One Piece hasn't done it twice in fact the replacements are glorified in the last one, such honest reception *wipes tear of 'not' pretentiousness*

I feel bad for the old Sonic VAs but oh well...
said at 2:06 PM on Sat Dec 27 2014
@HienFan Yeah, I feel bad for 4Kids in a way. They get lots of hate no matter what.

I'll admit they weren't brilliant back in the day (which is over 10 years ago or something) but they have improved over time. So you'd think that hate would die down but I guess not.

Michael Yurchak is annoying but this is the kind of annoying that fits in this case. He has that cockiness that Jet is known for. An interesting case is that Jet's characterization changed as well as his voice since before he was willing to cheat but now he wants to beat Sonic in a clear match. Really creates a different perceptive of Yurchak's Jet.

Micheal sounds annoying, but that's what Jet is meant to be, in this case it actually works. So changing my vote to Micheal Yurchack.

Even though I hate Jason Griffith.... he did Jet better than Michael

Michael was too high for Jet... and not "bird" "raspy" lin voice that Jason had in Jet

@Mephilez same here. i especially liked it better in Zero Gravity where he sounded less annoying.

Griffith sounds like he's emulating Tom Kenny... on a bad day.

Ahahahaha....Yurchack's voice makes me laugh. His performance is much more natural than Griffith. Griffith sounds like a parrot.

But, one gets my vote.

Before I say my thoughts, I figured I point something out to those who seem to be forgetting something. Both voices make Jet sound annoying, but that's what he's supposed to be. Jet is basically a character who's egotistical and wants to outwin Sonic. Thus, he'll act cocky and selfish around a lot of people, especially Sonic. So for those who say either Jason or Micheal sound weird and annoying, well...that's kinda the point of Jet's character. Now, I myself do not like Jet period, but I do know that he was created to be a rival that can be a nuisance to everyone.

Now that I got that out of the way, I feel Micheal Yurchak does a better job at making Jet sound like he should be: cocky, annoying, and egotistical. Since Jet is supposed to be a nuisance and overconfident about himself, I think Micheal accomplished doing that very well. He does make Jet sound a bit nerdy, but I think it was done to show how Jet can be a loser sometimes (as shown in the Sonic Riders games), so I think it suits him.

As for Jason Griffith, his voice was...also good for Jet. I don't prefer this voice though because Jet sounds like a kid going through puberty. It's also similar to his Usopp voice, which was not a good voice to begin with. While Jason does do a good job making Jet annoying and cocky, he does it in a more unsettling way, so I don't really like it much.

While both voices are good for the purpose they were doing, I prefer Micheal's voice because it's a bit more realistic and not as embarrassing to listen to as Jason's.

Both were great, but I like Michael Yurchak's Jet voice just slightly more.

@TheBlackHawk No, they both suck (no offense), it's just that Michael's isn't as bad.

I always thought Jet's voice was interesting rather than terrible. Of course, I'm not arguing with you, I'm just giving my opinion; you are entitled to your own opinion. =)

Cool Steelix icon, by the way. =D

I don't really care that much for Jet, but I gotta go with Michael Yurchak. While I don't think Jason is a bad voice actor, his voice for the character is just annoying to me. Sounds too much like the voice he gave Usopp in 4Kids' dub of "One Piece" (and we all know how horribly that one turned out :P).

Okay, I guess Griffith isnt winning the Jet The Hawk poll anymore. Oh well, I musnt deny the fact that there indeed more people who prefer Michael over Jason. But Jason will always be the true Jet to me, but I also like michael just as much. But you know I never whined about Jason being replaced. Michael's Jet voice sounds no different from Jason's so there's no point argueing over two VA's who makes a certain character sound the same unless you're obsessed.

Lol, people keep saying that Michael makes Jet sound annoying. But what they dont get is Jet is SUPPOSE to sound annoying, because he is a JERK! Whether its Jason Griffith or Michael Yurchak it doesnt matter. THEY STILL CAPTURE HIS PERSONALITY!!!!!!!!

JASON GRIFFITH HANDS DOWN!!!! He has most votes for ALL the characters he voices. Although I prefer Roger over Jason, other than Sonic, I like Jason for all the characters he voice the BEST!!! And Jason basically CREATED Jet's voice. Michael just makes it sound similar.

@akmaldanish In terms of Sonic, you mean? He's not winning the Iron Man or Usopp polls.
said at 1:38 AM on Thu Mar 17 2011
@NCZ I dont know or even care about his Iron man or Usopp voice. Oh well I kinda miss Griffith. But in my opinion Roger is the best.

Usopp was Jet? What? lol Jason was like voicing a younger Jet while Michael voiced the older one. But either way the two sounded good.
said at 5:25 PM on Mon Feb 7 2011
Jason's is more squaky annoying, but here's the thing... it WORKS for Jet. Michael's is cool sounding to say the least, but is DEFINITELY far off from what I think Jet would sound like, He seems more suited for a parakeet

Jason Griffith is the better voice for Jet it's how Jet should soudn in my opinion a cocky, foolish, dramatic character who always wants to get his own way Jason gave him the high/husky voice I liked it a lot quite laughable really XD he gave Jet the positive and fitting tone arrogant pushy person I think he voiced Jet better in Zero Gravity because At most parts he had a low tone most of the time at some parts he would be high but a little less than last time and other parts they would be mixed and fused together making Jet sound nice and more natural and therefore much better so Overall I Jason Griffith better

His best performance - Zero Gravity

Michael Yurchak uh I didn't like his voice for Jet there were a lot of problems it was more high pithced than Jason in ZG, he sounded too whiny and extreme like something tasing bitter and tough, The acting was meh and uh but it didn't really change anything I could still hear that horrible voice he also sounds quite older somehow not exactly like a 14 year old but still uh it was annoying too...

I like Jason Griffith best for both Riders and ZG :)

@Truesonic Funny thing is, I thought of Darrel Guilbeau for Jet's possible new voice (Think Masamune Date from Warriors Orochi)

Also, it's because in Warriors Orochi 2, Taigong Wang has Jet's JPN voice, Daisuke Kishio. And Wang sounds like Masamune in that game along with a few others.

Instead of a sqwaky bird voice, it'd be cool if Jet had a cool young smooth arrogant voice(considering Jet's actual age, which is 14.)

Jet the Hawk is a terrible character anyways. Michael Yurchak's voice is really what Jet is, generic and cocky. Griffith's really isn't much different just a lot more annoying.

A bit ironic that you say that, because Jason Griffith is a New Yorker and Michael Yurchak isn't.
said at 11:04 PM on Sun Nov 14 2010
Michael sounds like James Marsters, or something, the guy who voices Nermal on Garfield! Jason portrayed the character perfectly, his sqwacky voice protrayed Jet's behavior and personality well, michael's was just a little annoying
said at 6:59 PM on Tue Jun 21 2011
@AMT They're both annoying, but that's what Jet pretty much is anyway...

IMO I didn't find Jet annoying in Zero Gravity as Griffith did well there.
