Voice Compare » Sonic the Hedgehog » E-123 Omega
Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of E-123 Omega with sound clips and images.
E-123 Omega is the last in the E-series of robots created by Dr. Eggman. He has a deep hatred for Eggman, who locked Omega up in a cold, dark room for years, and now wants to destroy all of Eggman's other robots so he can be the best. He's a member of Team Dark with Shadow and Rouge.
Omega was voiced by Jon St. John in his debut appearance, Sonic Heroes. When the cast was replaced, Maddie Blaustein became Omega's voice from 2005 until her death. However, during development, the lines she recorded for Shadow the Hedgehog were replaced by Greg Weber. It was necessary to redo Omega's lines, but since she was unavailable, Jeff Kramer at Webtone Productions in San Francisco, California. Her voice was, however, heard in the finished product of Sonic 2006. When SEGA began using a Los Angeles-based voice cast starting with Sonic Colors, Vic Mignogna took over as Omega.

EDITOR'S OPINION
Thanks to the special effects, Jeff Kramer sounds very similar to Jon St. John, so it's hard to choose! I also like how Vic Mignogna's Omega sounds slightly different from the others, making his more unique. The weakest performance is in Sonic 2006. The lack of vocal processing makes Omega sounds stiff, and even though he's a robot, it just comes off as awkward since he could emote well in previous entries. Clearly, the vocal processing was a factor in this, because with it, I'm sure Maddie would've sounded a lot better. At the end of the day, they're all great. (Sonic 06 aside...)NCZ

I'm betting the minute Dr. Eggman calls Omega worthless Omega will end up going into one Edward Elric's short rants.

So, what have learnt this week, kids?
I learnt that Brian Drummond voiced Knuckles in Sonic Underground.
& Maddie Blaustein voiced Omega in Shadow the Hedgehog.
So, you see, kids? You DO learn something new everyday!

@MilanTheVillain01 I was wondering why Maddie's clip in Mario & Sonic at the Olympics sounds suspiciously similar to "Andrew's" clip in Shadow the Hedgehog.
Anyway, I want to change what I said earlier about Maddie, after hearing her performance in Shadow the Hedgehog more, I have to say that she did good for bad directing and it didn't sound as slow as I originally thought.

Eh... they all kinda sound the same, with the exception of the 06 performance. I guess john wins, since he was the first person to do the voice.

@Toady_12 This post implies pretty strongly that she did:

One thing's for sure, it wasn't Andrew Rannells. People simply assumed it was since he did Gamma.

Gonna rate Jon St. John First here. He has the right kind of delivery and tone for the character, it sounds robotic while still being quick and snappy when appropriate.
Maddie Blaustien's performance was very similar to Jon St. John's and in terms of character, fit very well, even if the vocal processing did not.
Andrew Rannell's omega I thought sounds much more stiff and awkward, not to mention slow in terms of delivery.
Vic Mignogna I'm going to place last, as his tone is so strange sounding and velarized, and stiffer than Rannell's.

1. Jon St. John - Duke Nukem was perfect for a big, powerful, revenge-driven robot.
2. Vic Mignogna - Easily a worthy successor to Jon as he gets the character down as well as Jon did.
3. Andrew Rannellls - Out of all the 4Kids voice actors, he made the character that he voice sound closest to the VA from the non 4Kids games.
4. Maddie Blaustein - Just bleh.

all of them sound exactly alike in almost every single way so this is probably one of the hardest compares for me. I can't really go with Blaustein because she didn't really do that well in 06 and in the Winter Olympics she only got one line. I never really cared for Jon St. John's performance let alone cared for Sonic Heroes voice acting in general. It's either between Mignogna or Rannells and while I do and still do enjoy Rannells performance, I prefer Mignogna just due to having the most interesting of the voices, somewhat low and similar to Jon St. Johns but sounding similar to Rannells, getting a good mixture of both.

Jon: No comment
Andrew: A little too much emotion, but better than Jon.
Maddie ('06): Not convincing
Maddie ('09): Much better than her previous voice
Vic: Phony-sounding, but in a good way
Overall, I'm going to go with Vic Mignogna, with the late Maddie Blaustein as a close second.

Question: Wouldn't it have been a smarter casting choice to have Vic Mignogna play Sonic since he's already kind of famous for playing a cocky, stubborn, smart mouthed 15 year old hero?
Anyway, his Omega sounds cool but my favorite voice is Jon.

I feel that Duke Nukem himself does the best performance as Omega. He really sounds like a big, huge robot that does have a robotic feel while at the same time doesn't sound flat or monotonic.
Andrew does a good job, I do feel that the slower voice of Omega does ruin his performance a little.
Maddie was weak, doesn't really sound like a robot and it felt really slow. A shame since she had a lot of potential with her wide range but it wasn't really her fault. Thankfully, her next performance was a huge step in the right direction.
Vic only had a couple of lines to say so I can't really comment on it. I'll probably update it if he shows up in another game.

They all sound the same!!! well except for 06's that one makes me cringe, but that could be said of the game in general.
Anyways its basically a tie between the four, but I give it to John for his performance had the most charm, though Vic might overcome him if Sega remember Omega exists.

But if you hear the tone/pitch each one gives.... I would vote
1 Maddie Blaustein 06
2 Andrew
3 Vic
If all 3 were combined, it would be perfect

@RabidSonicFan I'm thinking they meant to do that. The lack of processing combined with Omega's stiff, clunky motions make it apparent Sega wanted to have him be more "robotic". He doesn't have the effect in the Japanese version either, while he does in his other appearances.

In Mario and Sonic, Maddie sounds very identical to Andrew Rannell's Omega. So it's a split between Maddie's M&S performance and Andrew's.

@Belial Edge In general, all of those all-star voice actors/actresses are extremely talented in the area, but at the same time, they have been re-used for anime and video games for too long now... At least that's what I think. This is a newer generation, right? What I suggest is that some of the dubbing companies such as Studiopolis try to find new, decent voice talent, no matter how hard the job is... But if other people want to continue living off of how cheap the companies can be, I suppose that's fine as well.
Replysaid at 6:03 PM on Sat Jul 9 2011
@Ninjaman15 I TOTOALLY agree! Thats exactly what I said! They're very talented but theyre pretty much taking over all animated voice roles, and it gets kinda boring, cuz u recognize the voices and theres only so many voices they can do! Thats partly the reason i was pissed when they replaced 4kids, they had some very unique voices, very good voices that most ppl dont get to hear a lot if animated series. For example, I like Laura Bailey, but when she plays little girls, she's always has that bratty girl voice thats so easy to point out now since I hear it so often, that it kinda bugs me...

One thing to note to all those that don't like Maddie Blaustein's voice...
Omega's seiyuu Taiten Kusunoki did a similar tone in the JPN versions of 06, so don't think that new voice tone was only exclusive in America here.
Still, like with the ENG voice, they switched it back.

I'm not sure about Vic like said before while the voice is less altered I don't think it's unique If Omega appears in future games and we heard this voice more often It would sound a little deep I just don't like the effects they used for Vic's Omega voice :/
Perhaps they can tone down the effects a little more in the next game Omega appears in I don't think it would work hearing him sound like this in future games (no offence to Vic or anything He's a great actor) ._.

With the exception of the '06 voice, I think all 4 of 'em did good. However, if I were to rank them...
1. Vic Mignogna - What I like about his voice is how he can make it sound really similar to the original three, but still put his own spin on it.
2. Jon St. John - Being the first voice, and a good one at that, I had to rank him pretty high. He set the mold for the other voices.
3. Andrew Rannells - I was surprised when I found out that was him in "Shadow the Hedgehog". He sounds a lot like Jon St. John and is MUCH better than that horrible Gamma voice in "Sonic X" (although I blame the voice director on that one).
4. Maddie Blaustein - Her voice in "Sonic '06" was pretty terrible, but I think she sounds much better in "M&S". RIP

1. Jon St. John - His Omega voice was deep, monotoned, and naturally paced.
2. Vic Mignogna - Despite sounding different (due to the Nintendo DS's limitations), his voice most closely matched Jon St. John's, in my opinion.
3. Andrew Rannells - His voice was similar to Jon St. John's, but was slightly higher-pitched and slower to sound more robotic.
4. Maddie/Adam Blaustein - Much like Rannells in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, but not very fitting in Sonic 'O6.

Man, I have no idea how to rate voices when it comes to cold, monotone robots. To be honest, any one of them wouldn't make much of a difference to me. I'd probably only leave out Maddie Blaustein in '06 for sounding too much like Orbot in Unleashed.

3. Maddie Blaustein - While the '06 voice was pretty bad, I think she did good in M&S. RIP
4. Andrew Rannels - I was surprised when I found out that was him in Shadow the Hedgehog. Sounds a lot like Jon St. John and is MUCH better than that horrible Gamma voice (I blame the voice director on that one). The only reason I ranked him the lowest though is because... well... he didn't really do much in that game.

Okay I've decided liek I said before they are all good aside from 06 I like all 3 VAs Maddie,John and Andrew they alll sounded similar so in the end they are all great aside 06 (It wasn't Maddie's fault then) I'm leaving Vic out because I'm not sure if the voice should be altered like that :L
I'll have to go with Jon St John since he was the first but hats off to Maddie and Andrew for doing great too They are all great in the end.
Andrew did a great job with Decoe in Sonic X and Maddie did a great job with the President in Shadow and the Guardian in Riders.

I voted for Maddie for 2 reasons:
1) Out of respect, may she R.I.P
2) I think her voice for Omega in Mario and Sonic was very similar to Jon and Andrew's and it was a great redemption. So while she sounded just like them, I gave it to her becaude people probably wouldn't because of how they edited her voice in 06.
But truthfully, all except the 06 voice, fits Omega great! I wouldn't care who voiced him out of these 3! =D

Jon St. John, Andrew Rannells and Maddie Blaustien (in the Olympic games) sounded roughly the same, and it's because of the vocal effects really. All 3 of them made Omega sound like an intimidating robot with an aggressive personality. I guess out of all 3 of them, I'll go with Jon St. John, but Andrew and Maddie were also excellent sounding thanks to voice editing.
I really don't know why Sega thought it was a good idea to change the vocal effects of Omega in Sonic 06 (as well as his personality). Omega's voice sounded much more robotic and boring in that game compared to before. Thankfully this version of Omega was VERY short lived (rightfully so...). I know it wasn't Maddie's fault, but her voice in Sonic 06 is the worst sounding one of all.
Vic Mignogna's voice is interesting. It's a bit different than the early voices, but it still makes Omega sound tough and aggressive like he should be. It sounds somewhat human this time around also. I'm glad Vic's portrayal is good enough.
With the exception of the Sonic 06 voice, all of these voices are great, so there's not much of a point for me to rank these. But I'll go with Jon St. John on this one.

I agree it's still too hard for me to choose I mean I reallly Liked Jon but I also like Andrew a lot and he did a great job both Shadow and Sonic X while Maddie on the other hand got back to basics in OWN and she was really good It's too hard for me....And Like I said Before I'm not too sure about Vic's Omega voice being less altered But I'll have to see how it goes in the future
I won't vote on this
I'd say it's a tie between Jon St John and Andrew Randells, and Maddie (The OWG Version)

other than maddie's performance in sonic 06, they all sound similar. but I liked Jon and Andrew best since they were originally now 4 kids then. Vic is awesome, he deepened Omega's voice and it sounds even more bad-ass. I like it. I like them all

Is wasnt maddie that sucked, it was the voice editing to her voice that sucked. If you go listen to the jap dub of sonic 06, you'll hear omega's actor, the one he's had since heroes, had his voice editing software changed to. It was so the voice would fit with Omega's slow, robotic movements in that game. And as you can see, Maddie's voice was GREAT for Omega in OWG, and actually I think she was the best.

I like all Omega's V/As except the 06 version
But all voices will sound almost the same most of the time so it doesn't really matter who voices them due to the vocal processing software though there will be some differences
John brought a great voice for Omega he had more emotion and was really tough and dramatic I liked Omega's character in Heroes XD
Andrew Rannels sounded exactly the same as John but with a few small changes but it didn't matter he was just as good as John shame he left that quickly But I wish him well in what he's doing now as he left 4Kids 5 years ago...He also voiced a few minor characters in Sonic X
Maddie Blaustein I er think It was a mistake to use that type of voice in 06 It sounded really different compared to others it was a bit too robotic and bland I wasn't too fond of it it didn't sound like how Omega was in Shadow or Heroes but I'm glad they got back to basics in the Winter Olympic Games so therefore her second performance was best if they stuck with the same routine then it would have been much more better
Vic Mignogna....Umm uhh I don't know If i like this one....The difference is he is less altered and more low..Uh I have the DS Version of Colours I also listened uh Uh yeah he sounds more like the others except the voice less altered I dunno Um I think I prefer Omega with a more altered voice I dunno i guess they did that with Omega so much in the past I wasn't really sure I think I'm the only one who prefers Omega with a more altered pitch voice but um I dunno we will see what he brings in the future XD...I'm just not too sure
I'd call it a tie between Andrew, Maddie(MASATWOG version) and John
I'm leaving Vic out because i'm not sure
Uh...I'll just uh give a Tie to them all XD

John: I can't believe this guy did Big the Cat. He does capture the robot monotone pretty well.
Rannells: Huh. I couldn't really tell the difference between him and the other.
Blaustein: First performance, terrible. Too human-sounding and not enough intimidation. Second performance, back to basics.
Mignogna: Vic, you've done it again. Great job.
In the end, I can't really give the edge to one voice or the other. Too similar and the distortion doesn't really help in the deciding factor. It's a tie, basically.

Okay you know what? Imma say it. I liked the Sonic 06 voice too. Nowhere near as much as the others, but I didn't hate it. It just wasn't Omega to me.
however I like all the actors who portrayed him as they all did a good job. I'm not going to say Mauddie improved because she didn't. SHE was good the entire time and had the effects been different in Sonic 06 Omega would've been perfect and probably in the group of the best voices in Sonic 06 along with Eggman, Blaze, Mephiles and maybe Shadow. lol

But to reiterate my previous statement, Omega's voice is something that will never really change due to the sound effects software.

@amt & ncz Yes, but my point was that Omega didn't suffer in SEGA's transition from the 4Kids actors to the LA-based ones like most other Sonic characters did (some, such as Amy, were completely KILLED by that transition).

Maddie improved in the olympics
I honestly don't mind who voices omega As long as he doesn't sound weird in 06 and Gamma in SonicX

It's more likely that it was Blaustein in Winter Games. She's the one credited, and Andrew Rannells quit 4Kids a few years ago. Personally, I think she recorded some lines as Omega before she died, and Sega used them for that game.

It really doesn't matter who voices Omega, since the vocal processing software makes them all sound almost exactly the same. Maddie 06 version being the exception, of course. I went with Maddie because I think she got too much flack for her Omega voice, it wasn't THAT bad imo.

I have to say Maddie Blaustein was terrible in 06 I liked Omega's Sonic Heroes(Jon) and Shadow The Hedgehog's voice(Andrew) better. Overall i like Jon St John better ...Maddie improved in the winter olympics sadly she died in 2008 (R.I.P) they had to bring Jon St John back aswell in the Winter olympics they didnt have a choice....Jon gets my vote.

So it turns out Andrew Rannells never voiced Omega period, but Jeff Kramer did in Shadow the Hedgehog?
Does this mean he did Omega's voice in Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics also? Maddie Blaustein is still credited as Omega for that game on this site.
Hope this gets sorted out for good soon.
said at 6:42 PM on Sun May 12 2013
Maddie Blaustein originally recorded Omega's dialogue for Shadow. There were some technical issues and she was unavailable for rerecording, so Jeff Kramer filled in for her. This explains her comment below; she probably wasn't aware that her dialogue had been replaced (or she was referring to being cast a few years ago).
These recordings, as well as some of Maddie's, were used in Winter Olympics.
