Carmelita Fox

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Carmelita Fox with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Sly Cooper

Inspector Carmelita Montoya Fox is an Hispanic INTERPOL agent and the eternal pursuer of the thief Sly Cooper. Carmelita has a rigid black-and-white view of crime and shows extreme determination in apprehending any perceived law-breaker. Due to Sly's persistent evasion of capture by her hands, Carmelita has developed a single-minded obsession with bringing Sly to justice.

While Ortega's attempt at an Hispanic accent is somewhat dodgy, it doesn't take away from the authoritative air in her performance. Glidewell, on top of not even bothering with the accent, doesn't sound very distinctive and seems wooden at parts. Livier's attempt at the accent might be more successful than Ortega's, but her nasally tone isn't very intimidating for a figure of authority. DeLisle not only gets the accent down but brings an abrasive element to the performance that suitably serves to make the character more ferocious. My vote's going with DeLisle here.

why do i have a feeling that Carmelita Fox having a different voice in every Sly Cooper game is some kinda running gag?

Roxana Ortega while having a very assertive voice, doesn't get the accent down quite right. Still she was pretty solid as Carmelita Fox.

Alesia Glidewell sounds really bland. She lacks the Hispanic accent & there is no authoritative air to her voice.

Ruth Livier while having a good accent, doesn't sound as authoritative or assertive as Roxana in this role.

Grey DeLisle has a combination of what Ruth Livier & Roxana Ortega brought to the role initially, which makes her take the strongest in this voice compare in particular.

@Shaun Ince Not to mention Grey had the most chemistry with Sly (Kevin Miller). I really hope, if the Sly series comes out of hiatus again, that she returns to voice Carmelita instead of getting yet ANOTHER voice actress.

@TailwithaStripe Unfortunately the movie was cancelled & Sly Cooper was going to have a different voice in that. Very likely that it would have been the same for Carmelita Fox. Though there is a TV show in the works.

While I would also prefer if they stuck with Grey DeLisle, it's always been a standard of sorts to change the voice between each new entry.

Right now, I have no idea who could voice Carmelita Fox next

@Shaun Ince Its a shame really. Grey is a really talented woman and I think she deserves to be the quintessential voice for Carmelita Fox. But if she does get another new voice actress hopefully she'll do as well.

Changing my rankings a little. I now put Ruth Livier over Alesia Glidewell. After replaying both Sly 2 and 3 I now feel Ruth captured better of the character's authoritative and tough nature but also had some emotional weight. Yeah the accent was a little off but it's still better than no accent. Had she gotten more material to work with she might have done better. But now I think it's good.

I still think Alesia's lack of the accent drags her performance down plus I now think she sounds too tomboyish for the character as well as some wooden acting here and there. She's not terrible by any means just not that good (she's better as Krystal).

Roxana is still second and Grey is still THE definitive Carmelita voice for me.

Ah, I love Carmelita Fox! And here's what I think of the VAs that voiced her:

4. Ruth Livier - Yeah, this was definitely her weakest voice. Ruth just doesn't seem to get the accent right and the acting can feel a little wooden. Still a decent job and she did have little material to work with. Just needed more polish.

3. Alesia Glidewell - I just don't feel much for this voice as I use to. It fits but without the accent, it lacks all the charm of the character. And though her acting was fine, I think she needed a bit more of an attitude.

2. Roxana Ortega - For being the original, she certainly did a great job introducing the character! Right down to the accent and the authoritative tone the character has. It can be a little monotone in some places but overall a great start!

1. Grey DeLisle - Oh man, Grey is by far the BEST voice for Carmelita! Not perfect, but Grey just captures all the right traits of the character whilst making it her own and adding more depth and emotion to the character. Carmelita, I felt, was very well developed in the fourth game and it's all thanks to Grey's top notch voicework. I really hope she stays as Carmelita!

I always prefer Glidewell because the accent does not have to be Hispanic. She makes Carmelita like Jessica Alba instead of Shakira like the others do it.

Grey adds much more to her performance than the previous actresses before her. The others only seem to nail one aspect of Carmelita and not much else. Sticking with Grey for this one.

@Shaun Ince Also I'm find Alesia Glidewell's position on this poll very questionable. There is no accent & it's so bland & at it's core, very forgettable.

@Shaun Ince It's a shame since Glidewell could nail this role if given a second chance....

A Hispanic version of her Samus Aran voice would be a natural fit for Carmelita.

Roxana nails the accent, but delivery falls flat most of the time. But her voice sounds age-appropriate.

Alesia's got the best voice IMO but I miss the accent, and her delivery is flat sometimes, but not all the time.

Ruth, I think is the weakest. Her accent is rather forced and inconsistent, which gets in the way of her delivery. Voice-wise, I think she sounds too old.

Grey, nails the accent, and her delivery is top-notch. Only problem is that, to me, she sounds just a little too old. But I still think she's the best one here.

My ideal voice for Carmelita would be Maria Canals-Barrera. Maybe for the movie? (that's probably wishful thinking.)

Grey gives off the more solid performance IMO. Alesia's voice was fine, but her acting was just bland.

Ohhhhh DeLisle and Livier sound like ragers

My vote definitely goes to Grey DeLisle. I like all of them, but Grey definitely has that voice that fits the character so well. Ortega comes 2nd, and then Livier, who, despite her voice being a little nasally, she did real well. Gildwell was still great, and I don't count her as my least favorite, because I still love her performance. I accidently played Sly 2 before Sly 1, and so at first I thought her voice was supposed to be with an American accent (obviously I know better noe). It does not surprise me that DeLisle did so well with her voice, edpecially since she can vpice other characters such as Catwoman in Batman: Arkham City. So all in all, DeLisle gets my vote. Here's my full list, just so you know:

1st: Grey DeLisle
2nd: Roxana Ortega
3rd: Ruth Livier
4th: Alesia Gildwell

Also: I sincerely hope they keep DeLisle for the movie. It would just fit really well, even if Kevin Miller is not Sly (I don't completely mind, because Ian James Corlett doesn't sound that bad). So fingers crossed for DeLisle returning.

Gildewell is lifeless, Livier has too heavy of an accent, and DeLisLe sounds annoying and too cute. I don't know how she's winning.

Ortega is the best. Her accent is more natural without sounding forced, and she sounds tough and sexy at the same time. I'm not sure how else to describe it, but when she banters with Sly and rejects any and all attempts to flirt with her, it actually FEELS like she's slapping him across the face. With the other actresses, something just seems off with their delivery.

I didn't give this compare a very thorough assessment when I first joined the site, so I'm going to give my full opinion on each performance. I'm listing them from who I see as best to worst.

Roxana Ortega - Ever since I played the first game, this is closer to the kind of voice I prefer Carmelita to have. She's tough and no-nonsense with an accent that's not too pronounced, and a slight amount of sass. Her performance is kind of wooden and her accent was a little weak, but I feel she's the best fit overall.

Alesia Glidewell - I don't get why her performance turned out so lifeless, I seriously don't. There are times where certain words are elongated awkwardly or there are little pauses like it's her first take and she's still trying to memorize the script. It just sounds amateurish. It's weird that her performance as Carmelita was so bad, because her Neyla sounded noticeably better, IMO.

Grey DiLisle - For the most part, I had high hopes for her performance before playing the game, but when I finally did play it... good grief, half the time she was just so over-the-top and annoying I wanted to punch something. Instead of sounding no-nonsense, cool, and sassy, she sounded impetuous, obnoxious, unlikable, and her shrill shouting started to grate on my nerves like crazy. In my opinion they ruined her characterization in the game. I liked how her character was more prominent than in previous games and that she had more screen-time, but instead of being the cool, level-headed and sassy woman she was in the prior entries to the series, she was way too exuberant and angry to the point where she just sounded flat-out whiny and unlikable like a five year-old throwing a fit. Grey could have possibly been an excellent Carmelita had the character not been handled so awfully in this game, but because the writing for the character was so atrocious that possibility was squashed. Ugh... just listening to Grey's clip is making me cringe.

Ruth Livier - Honestly, I think her acting is pretty decent. It's kind of sassy, authoritative, and there's personality to it, but the accent is far too distracting and a couple of her lines sound flat.

So, after a good amount of thinking, I'm changing my vote from Grey DeLisle to Roxana Ortega.

Alesia sounds more like a professional cop than the others so i'm going for her though I like Grey 2nd.

Roxana is ok though she's the 1st voice so she earns my respect.

Ruth on the other hand wasn't the best.

Love seeing this here, perfect chance for a comparison.
So the 4th Sly game's not out for a few more days here in Australia, but from what I've heard in this clip and in trailers DeLisle's voice is the best (even if the visual appearance for the character are bizarre).
1. DeLisle 2. Glidewell 3. Livier 4. Ortega
^Seriously, the accent thing, either get it perfect or don't even think about it.

Acting is one thing but honestly giving an accent to the character is a no brainer and in reality she's just an anthropomorphic fox who happens to have a Spanish name. Aleisha get points for originality and to me having the most enjoyable performance out of all 4. I do find it ironic that Hawaiians use Spanish saying like Aloha and she is a native of Hawaii and didn't do a Spanish accent though compared to the others though. However I still think it's the best.
said at 5:52 PM on Wed Mar 13 2013
@pete Or maybe it mentions in the character description that Inspector Carmelita Fox is a HISPANIC agent, so the accent completly fits.

As for the last part I have no idea what you meant (No offense intended.) :-]
said at 2:50 PM on Thu Mar 14 2013
@Torak I was tired when I posted and din't read properly. Anyway I think the fact a Spanish VA played her may have caused it. Anyway she is of Spanish decent but it doesn't mean she was born in Spain, Mexico, etc. unless the games say otherwise.

That being said Hawaiians say Spanish phrases like Aloha and she was born there so I think I find it ironic she's not using an accent as you'd think she'd learn in space where Spanish is spoken often.

1. Grey DeLisle: I'll vouch a little for CatsTuxedo here on the fact that Grey does certainly add a bit more ferocity and bite to Carmelita, on top of some great acting and a pasable voice; definatly the best actress in this VC and for Carmelita altogther! No surprise considering its Grey of course! xD

2. Roxana Ortega: Great performance, likewise with Grey I love the hispanic accent considering Carmelita is Hispanic, some good acting and has sense of authority too.

3. Alesia Glidewell: I really liked her Krystal, but she sound a little wooden, and generic here (Having no accent seems a little odd to me) but it does sound tough and authoritive too, still passable though.

4. Ruth Liver: She was ok, she has a decent accent and voice but lacks that authoritive tone and sounds a little forced at times: still not bad though.

I vote for Grey DeLisle because she is overall the best at the character so far, however, I highly prefer Roxana Ortega's voice. Yes, her accent wasn't that great, but Grey DeLisle's voice sounds more annoying and whiny than tough to me. I mainly thought she was written a little poorly in the game as well.

After hearing Grey DeLisle as Carmelita, I'm still sticking with Ortega. DeLisle and Livier's accent was too cheesy, and Glidewell's sounded bland. Ortega's had a Latina accent, but it came off naturally.

No doubt Ortega's voice was most authentic for Carmelita, but I'm still gonna say that my favorite was Glidewell's. Yes, she didn't give us fans the Hispanic accent, but she DID give us the voice of a tough female cop who is dedicated and persistent in her goals. On top of that, Glidewell managed to give Carmelita a voice that made her sexy as well as agressive; something that Sly himself would find absolutely irresistible! I absolutely loved it!
