Sesame Street Sesame Street

Comparision of the voice over actors who have been the voice of Elmo with sound clips and images.
Franchise: Sesame Street

Can you tell me how to get to... Sesame Street! To commemorate the incoming 3000 voice compares, our next VC Spotlight is based around the wonderful world of Jim Henson's Muppets.

One of the most prominent Muppets, Elmo is basically an innocent preschool child. He always does the right thing, is extremely curious of the world around him, and expresses nothing but love, affection, and joy toward the world and those around him.

Elmo started out as a generic background puppet played by various muppeteers. He was first named Elmo when Brian Muehl took the role, and envisioned as a character who spoke less with his words and more with basic sounds - something that defined Elmo today in a more sophisticated form. Richard Hunt took the role but didn't like what he could do with it, so he gave it up to Kevin Clash, who defined Elmo into who we know today. After a scandal regarding sexual misconduct, he was replaced and Elmo has since been performed by Ryan Dillon.

VERY special thanks to forum user Ghosty404 for helping with the sound clips!

Kevin Clash wins this, and Ryan Dillon is a good successor.

I can barely hear anything with Kathryn Muellen, and what I could make out didn't sound that good. As for the other performers, What?

Been waiting for a long time for more Muppet stuff so I'm happy to see this Spotlight.

Anyway, I was never a big fan of the monster/caveman like voice they used for Elmo. I'd say Hunt is the closest to being the most enjoyable but none of them really standout.

Clash made the character all his own and does a great job at making Elmo both cute and incredibly charming.

Dillon emulates Clash to a T with his performance. At points it's a little noticeable it's a different actor, but it's almost dead on perfect for the most part.

Kevin Clash captures the essence of Elmo so well, that it's hard for me not to vote for him. It's stunning how Splinter is also Elmo, like Jesus. It's a shame about the circumstances that caused him to leave.

Ryan Dillon does a really dang close match at Kevin, but there are some differences with how they both pronounce certain words, as well as the voice being flatter.

Before Clash, a lot of puppeteers did Elmo. Jerry Nelson did him when Elmo was a nobody, and while the performance is top notch and the voice probably fit the design back then, it all sounds retroactively weird with Elmo sounding like a gruff middle-aged man.

Kathryn Mullen was another pre-Elmo performer, and she's okay. Elmo doesn't sound right with a women voicing him, though.

Brian Muehl was the first performer to do Elmo as he became Elmo, and good god he sounded horrifying. Brian makes Elmo sound like a gremlin or Gollum. Do not want jfc.

Richard Hunt did Elmo after Brian. He's a quick improvement, and he sounds appropriately childish, but like Jerry he sounds dated. Here, he makes him sound really loud, and like Animal with some shades of Scooter.

1. Kevin
2. Ryan
3. Richard
4. Jerry
5. Mullen
6. Brian

Kevin Clash is the best Elmo. He basically crafted his own character when he voiced Elmo & it's the voice we're familiar with today.

Ryan Dillon does a good job too, despite sounding inconsistent at times. All the other voices that preceeded Kevin just don't work for me I'm afraid.

Interesting the first few voice actors he had are nothing like what was eventually known.

I do like what we have over time though, I'm voting for Kevin mainly because he was his voice for the 90s and early 2000s which was what I'm familiar with.
